Fantasy movies give us a way to escape the real world, which could get boring on a day to day basis. Think about it; getting up and going to work every day is not always the most exciting way to spend your day, but after you get home plugging into a great fantasy movie can really give you a place to go after that long, hard day. Whether you like fantasy movies that involve more of a comedy element, adventure, or even drama, they still offer you that much-needed getaway you pine for. Don’t tell me you don’t wish your foot would fit in the glass slipper or that you could go on a quest to Mordor?
Of course, you would like to change up your day, take up arms and defend your honor sometimes. Budget meetings don’t allow you to necessarily win over that knighthood you pine for. Where The Wild Things Are is based on a children's book that was a classic by Maurice Sendak. This story follows the adventures of a young boy named Max as he enters the world of the Wild Things, a race of strange and enormous creatures who gradually turn the young boy into their king.
The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is a love story about Princess Buttercup and Westley. Westley goes basically across the entire land to find and rescue his precious princess and battles a lot of dangerous situations in the meantime. We laughed at many situations along the way, but our hearts were filled with joy when they were reunited.
Pan's Labyrinth
Pan's Labyrinth is a creepy adventure through a labyrinth in hopes that the now mortal Princess Moanna will come back from the underworld. There are many tests involved in the labyrinth in order to find Princess Moanna. In all reality, it is not the happy-go-lucky fantasy story with a super happy ending we are all hoping for.
The Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is about Dorothy landing in the strange and wonderful world of Oz after her house was sent there in a tornado. She meets up with some heartwarming friends, but she must battle a wicked witch from the East in order to find the Wizard and get herself back home to Kansas.
Labyrinth
Labyrinth is a movie about a Goblin King, and a Labyrinth that Sarah must venture through in order to find her baby brother that she wished away. The Goblin King, Jereth, has created the Labyrinth in order to keep her away from her brother as he wants to make her wish come true. Did I mention it stars David Bowie?
The Never Ending Story
The Never Ending Story is about a boy who reads a story about Atreyu, a boy who must save the child-like empress of his land. He must travel far and wide to find what is needed to cure her from the illness she has contracted. He meets a lot of interesting creatures in the mean time, and also has many adventures along the way.
The Dark Crystal
The Dark Crystal is about a crystal that has been cracked creating two new races—the Skeksis and the Mystics. Jen, must reunite the crystal when the three suns align as it once has been, which is no simple task as both races hate each other. It's a Jim Hensen story that actually isn't made for children.
Star Wars: A New Hope
Star Wars: A New Hope was the first movie filmed in the Star War series, but the fourth installment of the series. Luke Skywalker trains to be a Jedi knight and eventually goes to take on Darth Vader, the ultimate evil Sith, who ends up being his father. In the process he must save Princess Leia, his sister, as well.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe is about four kids who come from the human world to Narnia. They are prophesied to save the land from the witch who has taken over the land and thrown it into eternal winter. However, the witch will not go down without a fight, and is it ever epic.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them somewhat of a prequel to Harry Potter, only to the extent that it is set in the same type of imaginary world before Harry and the gang were even imagined. It is not set at Hogwarts (although it is mentioned), the only characters that are referred to from HP are Dumbledore, and a female member of the Black Family. The world of magic, with Muggles (or no-majs in the US) is under deep scrutiny, and it doesn't help that Newt Scamander is travelling with a bag full of fantastical creatures that like to, occasionally, get loose.
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters is about four guys that rid people of their hauntings by trapping ghosts. Some cases are harder than others they find, but they are always willing to take on the case regardless. Ghosts have better be ware, because when they are bugging people the first people they are going to call is the Ghostbusters!
E.T.
E.T. is about a cute little alien that gets trapped on earth and his only goal is to go back home. When the government finds out about him, they go to no end to try to get their hands on him, but Elliott, the boy he is staying with and his friends decide to help him get back to his planet. It isn't easy, but they make it happen.
Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhandsis about a man that was made by a scientist up in a castle in the hills. He lived a life of solitude until a door to door make up salesman found him and brought him down to her house to live with her and her family. he has trouble fitting in with everyone, and he never quite does but we fall in love with him just the same.
Jumanji
Jumanji is about a boy that played the Jumanji board game and got sucked into the game never to be heard from again until another group played the game years later. The game, which is enchanted, brings the jungle to their lives as well as a bunch of danger. The only way for them to be freed is to get through the game though.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is about a hidden chamber hidden in Hogwarts that was created by Slytherin himself. It is said that only the heir of Slytherin can open the chamber and release the horrors inside of it, and that is exactly what happens. People begin to get petrified and Harry must figure out how to stop it.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is about a boy named Charlie that finds one of the five golden tickets that candy maker, Willy Wonka, releases out into the public in order for people to visit his factory. However, in the factory, the kids start falling into traps and leaving the tour which leaves only Charlie on the tour at the end.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first steps for Bilbo Baggins and his crew as they are trying to retake Lonely Mountain and fight the dangerous dragon, Smaug. Bilbo is elected to be their thief as he is sneaky and quick, but the rest of the crew knows he will likely not walk away from the task alive.

Avatar is about a tribal group of being that is discovered by the military. The military tries to gain their trust by creating avatars that looks just like the beings and adapting into their world. At first this seems to work seamlessly until some of the military appears to get greedy and pushes them way too far.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is about a cursed crew that must stay on the Black Pearl, but they are all dead. When the moon hits them, you can see they are all a bunch of zombies, and it really is pretty creepy, but it was because of their greed. Jack battles to get his ship back, but it isn't easy.
Enchanted
Enchanted is not an animated princess story...kind of. It begins as an animated story, but Giselle is brought into the real world hoping to be rescued by her prince charming only to eventually realize that she doesn't even love prince charming. She actually gets used to the real world after all.
Alice in Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland is about a girl that escapes into a fantasy world only to realize that it is in real peril. She must help save Wonderland from the mean Queen of Hearts who only wants everyone to fear her. Alice must face off against the Jabberwocky and she finds many crazy friends along the way.
Pete's Dragon
The remake and re-imagining of the family film by the same name. A Woodcarver likes to tell stories of a dragon that lives deep in the woods. Pete, an orphan boy, finds himself lost in a forest and is rescued by a giant, green, friendly dragon named Elliot. When the woodcarver's daughter hears Pete's story she investigates the truth behind the tale.
The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book is about a boy, named Mogli, who doesn't have any parents and is raised by wolves in the jungle. He doesn't want to go back to the man village so he does everything in his power to stay with the animals even though a vicious tiger is hunting him down. In fact, he befriends a bear Baloo.
Miss Peregrine's Home For Particular Children
Miss Peregrine's Home For Particular Children is about children with awesome magical abilities that all gather in Miss Peregrine's to further develop their skills and to be safe from the outside world. Their powerful enemies also don't make things easy for them either. It isn't an easy life for a particular child.
Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is based on the urban legend of the Headless Horseman. This creepy tale follows the Headless Horseman and the victims he cuts the head off of. The townsfolk wonder why he is doing it until they find out that someone is controlling him. Now they must find out who is creating this evil.
The Witches of Eastwick
The Witches of Eastwick is about three women, Alex, Sukie, and Jane who have learned Chinese aphrodisiac cooking and lament the scarcity of eligible men. As they sit around, they fantasize about and describe their idea of the ideal male. Arriving in town the following day is Satan, disguised as mysterious stranger Darrell Van Horn. This is when all of the trouble begins.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is about the Triwizard Tournament that Harry is accidentally entered in. Harry can't figure out why he is part of the competition, but it turns out that Lord Voldemort has some major plans for him as he wants to battle him one on one. Not a good situation.
Into the Woods
Into the Woods is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. It's a fun and mystical tale filled with music and fantasy that the whole family can enjoy.
Peter Pan
Peter Pan is about a boy that never wants to grow up, so he stays in Neverland hoping to stay young forever and cause mischief with The Lost Boys. Then he meets Wendy and his whole life is turned upside down because she is like someone he has never met before. All of a sudden he cares about someone, and he's not used to that.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is about the dark versus the light for lack of better words. The Order of the Phoenix fights off The Death Eaters, which aid and worship Lord Voldemort. Harry and his friends decide they must help this organization, but his godfather, Sirius, who is part of The Order dies in the meantime.
Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast is about a beast that lives in a castle in the middle of no where, and Belle becomes his prisoner after she makes an exchange of freeing her father for herself. Belle eventually realizes that the Beast isn't such a bad guy. In fact, he is gentle and cares for her. She warms up to him, which doesn't sit well with the townspeople.
Matilda
Matilda is about a young girl who has an amazing power. Not only is she incredibly smart, but she can also use telekinesis to her benefit. She is sweet, but lives in a house full of verbal abuse. Her family does not appreciate the gifts she has, and she is not a happy little girl. She tries her best to burry herself in her learning, but it's hard.
Cinderella
Cinderella is about a girl that was born into a happy family, but her mother passed away forcing her father to remarry. Her step mother is an awful woman, and after her father dies she treats Cinderella with the utmost disrespect. Cinderella eventually falls for the prince, and the prince returns her feelings to her step mother's dismay.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is just the beginning of the Horcruxes for Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione. They begin searching them out in order to kill Lord Voldemort, but as things get bad, they actually turn worse as Dumbledore is killed in the process. But Harry knows he must finish the task at hand.
