Over the years the WWE has had plenty of different women come through their roster, and each era seemingly brings a different kind of women to the table. Back in the Attitude Era, it was all about sex appeal and getting that male 18-35 demographic to tune in every week to watch and run the product with as much risqué content as possible. But even through then, there was some women who could wrestle still and put on great matches.
Then the term Diva came into the WWE, as they stopped referring to the women as women, and always called them Divas. The men were Superstars, the women were Divas, except the women they were bringing it were more models than wrestlers and they could barely hold a match together.
Today, the women’s evolution is in full swing and the focus is on the wrestling as opposed to how hot the Divas look. And while the women in today’s WWE women’s divisions are still very attractive, they can also put together matches that are good enough to main event pay per views, and earn match of the year consideration. Who is this Diva?
This Diva has had two runs with the WWE, first back in 2003 where she feuded most notably with Trish Stratus, which culminated in a match at Wrestlemania 22, which she won to earn her first women’s championship. After that, she would have five more title reigns before leaving the company. She would make her return to the WWE in 2016 at NXT Takeover: Toronto where she would compete against Asuka for the NXT Women’s championship and has remained with the WWE since.

This blonde Diva first getting her start in WCW, where she managed the likes of David Flair and Billy Kidman before WCW was bought out by WWE. After coming over, she feuded with Dawn Marie, who was marrying her father, and then she appeared twice in Playboy, the second time along with Sable. After wrestling she got into a high-profile relationship with New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, and made her return to the WWE at the first ever women’s royal rumble.

At one point she was the longest reigning WWE Divas Champion which she held for over 406 days and is known for her crazy girlfriend gimmick. Regarded as one of the best women wrestlers at a time when the focus was on more models than wrestlers, this Diva was given main event story lines as RAW General Manager and won the Divas Championship a record three times. In real life, she married controversial wrestler CM Punk and retired from the WWE in 2015.

Her victory over Melina made her the first WWE Diva’s Search contestant to win and hold the Women’s Championship. Not bad for someone who didn’t even reach the Top 10 in the contest and started off as a make-up artist gimmick. She appeared in Playboy in 2006, and worked her way to be a legit contender for the women’s championship, only for injuries to slow down her career, which eventually led to her release in 2009. She would retire from wrestling in 2017.

Nicknamed All-Red-Everything because of her red dyed hair, this Diva was brought mostly to be a member of the WWE’s reality show Total Divas. Her in ring career lacked, as she constantly butt heads with backstage management and was ridiculed by her fellow Divas for her inability to wrestle in the ring and be a dangerous opponent. After trying to learn to wrestle from Brian Kendrick, she was eventually released from the WWE in 2017, and went on to become a model and actor.

At one point, she was the best female wrestler in the then WWF, and had very little competition at all. But where she made the most noise was after winning the WWF Women’s Championship, she signed with the promotions rival, World Championship Wrestling, which still WWF Women’s Championship and brought the belt with her to television where she dropped it in a garbage can. She would later regret that decision and has since been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

This woman changed the definition of what a Diva was. She wasn’t a model, but rather a Tomboy, who loved baggy pants that showed her thong sticking out. Known for her moonasault, she was a woman capable of high flying moves, something that wasn’t normal for women during the Attitude Era. Her feud with Trish Stratus is still considered to this day to be the best women’s feud in WWE history, and she has since been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

This former body fitness model who own plenty of fitness contests turned pro wrestler in 2010 and got her start on NXT Season 3 as a replacement and had Vickie Guerrero as her mentor. She ultimately ended up winning the NXT contest and would go on to win the WWE Divas Championship from Eve on the 20th Anniversary of Monday Night Raw. AJ Lee would end her first and only reign at 153 days during their feud, and sooner after she would leave the WWE.

The Ravishing Russian would walk Rusev to the ring as his social ambassador, and speak in a Russian accent, despite the fact that the women herself is American. After the two split, although they are married in real life, she developed a dancing gimmick, where she had three chances at the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship, though she lost each time. Today, she has aligned herself with Tamina and rejoined her husband Rusev in the Mixed Match Challenge, where the two defeated Elias and Bayley, which was her first win in WWE.

This Diva holds the distinction of being the first and only African American Divas Champion in WWE history, winning it in a Fatal-Four Way match at a pay-per-view named the same back in 2010. She would lose the title 56 days later at SummerSlam. She would appear as a main cast member on Total Divas, and in 2017 she would earn a shocking victory to become the team captain for the RAW women’s team heading into the 2017 Survivor Series traditional match up.

This Diva was one of the Attitude Era’s biggest sex symbols, as she was famously known, as Jerry Lawler would put it, for her puppies. She managed Jeff Jarrett for some time, before she would be seen around her then husband, Stone Cold Steve Austin during the Invasion angle. She was also a Women’s Champion as well, winning against Sable, but not in a real wrestling match, but rather an Evening Gown match. Her title reign only lasted a month and she never held the championship again.

This former one-time WWE Divas Champion is one half of a team with her twin sister, and is known for pulling some ‘Twin Magic’ with her, switching places in the ring behind the referees back. This Irish Diva was the first Smackdown Women’s Champion, winning the title in a six-pack challenge at Backlash in 2016, and she held the title for 84 days. She is part of an unofficial faction known as the Four Horsewomen, a group of women known for championing in a new era of women’s wrestling that is about actual in-ring competition. She would lose the championship in a tables match and has been a workhorse of the women’s division on Smackdown, despite only having one reign as champion.

She began managing Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury, dubbed MNM, to three reigns as WWE Tag Team Champions before embarking on a singles career. She won three-time WWE Women’s Champion and a two-time Divas Champion and after winning her second WWE Divas Championship, Perez became the first woman in WWE history to become a multiple-time champion with both the Women's and Divas titles. There are two things this Divas is known most for. The first was during her early run, which featured her as part of John Bradshaw Layfield’s cabinet, where she was the image consultant for the former WWE Champion and had a growth on her face that would be bitten off by The Boogeyman. Her second most known gimmick is as a terrible singer, mimicking singers who can’t actually sing as she was way off key. She did win the Divas Championship once, but lost it immediately after winning it, giving her the shortest reign in the championships history.

The most popular Diva during the early Attitude Era, this Diva was one of the biggest sex symbols in the company which included her having one of the highest selling Playboy issues in the history of the magazine and would appear two more times after her first print. She became the second WWF Women's Champion after the title was reinstated into the company and was known for her powerbomb that she even used on her then husband Marc Mero. Today she is married to the WWE Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar.

When ECW returned as WWE’s third brand and were put on the SyFy channel, WWE needed some science-fiction type characters to make the network happy to be broadcasting a wrestling show. So along with a vampire character, this Diva was given the gimmick of a tarot card reader. She didn’t last long with the company, as the gimmicks and ECW didn’t last particularly long, and she would eventually sign with TNA Wrestling after being released from her contract in mid-2007.

This WWE Diva has the longest reign as Divas Champion in the titles history, coming it at 301 days. It was her second reign with the championship, which came after her and her twin sister began to compete as singles competitors as opposed to a duo. She appears on the Total Divas reality show, as well as the spin-off show that is named after her last name. At Wrestlemania 33 her long-time boyfriend, WWE Superstar John Cena, proposed to her in the ring after they had defeated The Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag team match.

When the WWE bought ECW, this Diva wasn’t involved in the Invasion story line but was one of only two woman from ECW who eventually got a contract. Her biggest feud was with Torrie Wilson, as this Diva went on to marry Torrie’s much older father. In story line, she ended up killing him on their honeymoon from a heart attack when they sealed the marriage. She went on to mostly feud with females who had male partners, and was released from the WWE when she became pregnant.

This Diva has the distinction of being one of only two women in to win Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Match of the Year for her involvement in the 30-minute iron man match in NXT. Other firsts include her being part of the first women’s Hell in a Cell match, which also was the first time a women’s match main evented a show. And she was the No. 1 entrant in the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match, lasting over 54 minutes. She has also been a four-time WWE RAW Women’s Champion.

This Diva hasn’t wrestled a match, but she is featured every week on RAW and Smackdown, as well as the pre-shows for Pay Per Views and after-shows, such as RAW Talk and Talking Smack. She got her start working at The Score in Canada where she hosted WWE Aftermath, recapping the WWE that week and was signed by the WWE to be a backstage reporter. She likes to refer to herself as the best there is, the best there was and the best there every will be, which is the saying her uncle Bret used to use. Growing up as a member of the Hart family put a lot on her shoulders, as she is the only woman to ever graduate from the famous Hart Dungeon training facility. She has been a main cast member on Total Divas and during her decade long career with WWE, has held the Divas and Smackdown women’s championship once each.

She won the WWE Women’s Championship for the first time at No Mercy in 2007, losing the title in April the following year. She then become known as Glamarella, when she started an on screen relationship with Santino, and winning the Women’s Championship for a second time. In 2010, she became the first woman to eliminate someone in the Royal Rumble, kissing the Great Khali over the top rope.

Despite her checkered history, the WWE inducted her into the Hall of Fame in 2011.
