Who Said It? Buffy The Vampire Slayer Edition

Buffy the Vampire Slayer subverted expectations, shattered opinions on what television was capable of and gave us one of the greatest feminist icons of all time. The series even influenced the way that we spoke. This was more than mere witty banter: It was 'Buffyspeak'. There is a reason why fans are still regularly quoting the show over twenty years after the pilot aired. These words remain just as relevant today as they were when Joss Whedon’s beloved creations voiced them for the first time.

The dialogue was always one of the most praised aspects of BtVS - which is the reason Whedon challenged himself by making "Hush", an episode with very little talking. Those words still resonate with viewers of all ages. While the situations on Buffy may have been fantastical, they were always grounded in very real emotions, which is how a genre show became a show that somehow managed to transcend genre altogether.

How big of a BtVS fan are you? Do you know the characters well enough to recognize them by their words alone? Are you prepared to relive all of the laughter, tears and pop culture references? Take this quiz and find out! Who Said It: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Edition.

Question 1

If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

Beepers, ah the '90s. Not just anyone would be so cavalier about the apocalypse, but for the Scooby Gang, it was just another Tuesday. Saving the world from impending doom on a daily basis can certainly put a crimp in your social life. This character had kind of had it. They were ready to fight if necessary, but really hoping for a date night instead. Of course this is BtVS, so the evening didn't go according to plan. Which character said this?

Question 2

Bored now.

This character had a vampire doppelgänger and this was basically her catch phrase. There wasn't much that entertained her, save torture and bloodshed. Hey, we all have our hobbies, right? When this character went through the darkest period of her life, she became more like that alternate version of herself than she ever thought possible. It was frightening to see her fall so far, but inspiring to watch her find her way back to herself. Do you know which character said this?

Question 3

Hello salty goodness.

We're going to just give you the clue that this statement was made in reference to Angel. The guy was a total dreamboat. David Boreanaz was basically discovered while walking his dog. A friend of Marti Noxon's saw him and let her know that they had found the man for the job. According to Joss Whedon, it was mainly the reactions of the women in the room when he auditioned that scored Boreanaz the role. Wo said this about Angel the first time she saw him?

Question 4

Love isn't brains children, it's blood. Blood screaming inside you to work its will.

This is definitely one way took look at love and is most certainly the way that a vampire would look at it. The bloodsucker in question was trying to explain why two people so desperately in love could never be friends, no matter how hard they tried. You can basically convince yourself of anything if you want to believe it badly enough and this couple spent a lot of time in denial. However, the speech that contained this quote made them rethink things.

Question 5

The Earth is doomed.

This statement is not only made during the pilot of BtVS, but also in the series finale. It created the perfect bookends for a brilliant show. This character was regularly concerned about the fate of the universe. In fact, he was probably bothered by it more than everyone else. That's okay, because every group - especially one tasked with saving the world - needs a worry wart among them. Do you remember which character made this statement on two separate occasions?

Question 6

This isn't some fairytale. When I kiss you, you don't wake up from a deep sleep and live happily ever after.

This was said to Buffy by one of her boyfriends. Unfortunately, the slayer didn't really get what you might call a storybook romance. Epic? Yes. Happily ever after? Not so much. This person wanted to make it clear that they weren't living in a fairytale and Buffy's response was, "No, when you kiss me I wanna die". Buffy didn't have too many boyfriends. She didn't even really date that much. Do you recall which of Buffy's beaus spoke these words to her?

Question 7

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live.

Truer words have never been spoken. We all know how difficult life can be, but that doesn't mean it's not worth living. Much of this can be found at the heart of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, concepts like living life on life's terms. This character was about to make a huge sacrifice and these final words can basically reduce any BtVS fan to tears instantly. If not, you might not actually have a heart. Do you remember who said this?

Question 8

I may be dead, but I'm still pretty, which is more than I can say for you.

This exchange also included the classic line, "You've got fruit punch mouth" - which this villain totally did. The character who spoke these words was locked in a battle of life and death, but we know that she always had time for a quip or two. There is really only one character who could've said this, considering the fact that most of the characters who die on Buffy the Vampire Slayer actually stay dead. Can you remember which character made this triumphant statement?

Question 9

Joyce will never have any more fruit punch, ever. And she'll never have eggs, or yawn, or brush her hair, not ever and no one will explain to me why.

This was one of the most heartbreaking moments in BtVS history. "The Body" also happened to be one of the finest hours of television ever shot. A brilliant, gut wrenching meditation on life and the mundanities of death. The episode was, of course, about the loss of Joyce Summers, Buffy's mother. The character who said this was desperately trying to comprehend mortality, asking the questions that we all secretly think, but feel we shouldn't ask out loud. Who said it?

Question 10

I’ve seen honest faces before. They’re usually attached to liars.

We have all, no doubt, experienced situations like this one. Not everyone is going to tell you the truth, no matter how honest their face may be. This person was responding to someone's assertion that they could be trusted. He actually was not a bad guy, despite the fact that he was a terrible character. Still, this person knew that looks could be deceiving and she wasn't about to be fooled. Do you know which character spoke these wise words?

Question 11

Whatever is causing the Joan Collins 'tude, get over it. Embrace the pain. Spank your inner moppet. Whatever.

Buffy may be the slayer, but that doesn't make her immune from acting like a jerk. As a teenager, she had to deal with stuff that most of us would only find in our worst nightmares, so she's had her fair share of issues. During one of her less than flattering moods, someone in her life gave Buffy some pretty excellent advice. We all go through difficult times, but that doesn't give anyone an excuse to treat their friends poorly.

Question 12

I'm sick of being the guy who eats insects and gets the funny syphilis.

Xander Buffy Willow

Well, only one character had either of these things happen to him: the self-proclaimed Jimmy Olsen of the group. In this episode, he had finally had it with being the most abused member of the Scoobies. It was his relationship with Dracula that brought everything to a head for this character. He attempted to take a stand and while we're sure that he meant every word, not too much changed for him. Even still, he was always an integral member of the team.

Question 13

To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It's not done because people deserve it. It's done because they need it.

Forgiveness is not always an easy concept for any of us to grasp. Imagine if you lost your virginity to the love of your life and then he turned into a monster? That's an issue that many of us have faced, only with a healthy dose of Hellmouth added, Buffy's beau became one quite literally. Although she had no way of knowing the consequences of her actions, the slayer struggled to forgive herself, feeling that she wasn't worthy of it.

Question 14

The big moments are gonna come, you can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer helped fans all over the world struggle through difficult times. It was the characters' imperfections that made them so relatable and many viewers found solace in their tumultuous lives. More so than any other quote in this quiz, this one probably sums up the ideas at the core of the series. Whenever the slayer was nearly beaten, she always found a way to make it through that pain and come out of the experience stronger than ever.

Question 15

Seize the moment, ‘cause tomorrow you might be dead.

This fabulous philosophy was revealed way back in the pilot and there is little better advice. The conversation was in relation to finding a way not to care what people think, more specifically what the opposite sex thinks about you. It is true that in those situations, the very worst that can happen when you put yourself out there is that someone won't be interested. Contrary to how it may feel in the moment, being rejected isn't as bad as a missed opportunity.

Question 16

God, I could eat a horse. Isn't it crazy how slayin' just always makes you hungry and horny?

Well, no two slayers are alike, right? This was evidenced by the stark differences in the ones that we met over the course of seven years - three to be exact, at least until the finale. All of them have different reactions to their calling and some revel in it way more than others. Which character found herself both starving and lustful in the wake of whatever carnage she needed - or wanted - to dish out? Who said this?

Question 17

I’m just gonna go home, lie down, and listen to country music. The music of pain.

Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, what is it that all of the greatest country singers have in common? Well, this character was dead on: it's pain. All of the best musicians draw from it and everyone can relate in some way. After a particularly humiliating rejection, they were hoping to drown their sorrows in the music that would best understand them - well, perhaps except for the blues. Who was so brokenhearted that the only cure was a country music marathon?

Question 18

She irons her jeans. She's evil!

I think that we can all agree that this is a crime worthy of considering someone truly evil. The monster in question was one Kathy Newman. She was Buffy's college roommate, so of course she happened to be a demon. From her Celine Dion obsession to her interest in Buffy's potential beau - not that Parker didn't deserve to shack up with Kathy - to her ruining the slayer's favorite sweater, Kathy was kind of a nightmare. Who felt that ironing her jeans was the most obvious clue?

Question 19

And remember, if you hurt her, I will beat you to death with a shovel.

We all want to protect our friends from having their hearts broken and this particular character had been through a lot. So, they needed an extra bit of protection, and one of their closest confidants certainly gave it to them when they had a little chat with their potential suitor about intentions. Fans already knew that these characters would do just about anything for one another and now this person knew it too. Do you remember who made this terrifying threat?

Question 20

So, either you hit her, or you did your wacky mime routine for her.

Buffy needed to confide in someone about her regrettable roommate situation, so she vented to this person. You may remember that she was pulling an Angel and losing her soul - thanks to Kathy - so she was fairly dramatic in her version of the story. After she punched the air several times, this character chose to make a joke out of the situation. However, no one was laughing when Buffy tried to kill her roomie...or when it was revealed that the slayer had been right all along.

Question 21

I wasn't lurking. I was standing about. It's a whole different vibe.

Well, really this could only be one of two characters, as both of them were rather famous for lurking, or um, standing about. They also both had a big time yen for the slayer and tended to show up wherever she happened to be. It wasn't always a welcome visit when either character did it, but one generally got a better reception than the other. Who gave this salty response when they were called out for hanging around Buffy's home?

Question 22

Do you love my insides, the parts you can't see?

In case you're wondering, the answer to this question was, "Eyeballs to entrails my sweet". Is that not the most adorable exchange that you ever heard in your entire life? This woman wanted to know how much her significant other truly loved her and they gave her a pretty excellent response. This fan favorite couple had a fairly tumultuous relationship, but that only served to make viewers love them more. Can you recall which character asked this question to her beloved?

Question 23

Killing things with wood? Ooh, scary vampires--they die from a splinter.

Well, that's certainly one way to belittle Buffy's sacred calling. It's a fairly inaccurate description, but this character was kind of grasping at straws. They were looking for any way to take the slayer down and in the process, leaving out some important details about how difficult it actually is to kill a vampire. That's cool though. Buffy never needed anyone else to understand the difficulties of her duties. She understood it all too well. Which character felt this way about that slayer life?

Question 24

It's a long and important process, and can we just skip it? Can you just be kissing me now?

Fans were overjoyed when they heard this statement. Of course, this is a Joss Whedon show, so that joy was dashed upon the rocks not too long after, but let's not think about that ugliness right now. Instead, let's remember how soul crushing this breakup was and how awesome it was to see this beloved couple reunited. However, everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before something awful happened since Whedon was behind the wheel. He thinks that happy couples are boring.

Question 25

If you wanna kill the world, well, then start with me. I've earned that.

This character had been with the show from the beginning. Up until this point, they had always been one of the white hats, but suddenly they were poised to end the world - although anyone paying attention saw where they were headed. Of course, the Scoobies were all going to be friends until the end. Still, things got ugly and when it counted, only one of them was capable of talking this person off the ledge. Whose yellow crayon speech wound up saving the day?
