Who Dated Them? Rachel, Monica, Or Phoebe?

Think you know everything there is to know about hit TV show Friends? Got the episode names memorized to a T? Or clearly remember in which episode Chandler and Monica adopt? Perhaps what mystery was lying behind the secret door in Monica’s apartment? Or when Ross and Rachel first kissed? These are all surely unforgettable moments, Friends is quite an unforgettable show. Not to mention things like “We were on a break!” or the foosball table! Ten years down the road, this is one of the shows we all definitely remember- one that inspired us, made us laugh, made us cry, helped us be introspective, and made us look fondly back on memories of six friends growing up and evolving over the span of ten years.

But if Friends is memorable for its witty episode titles, the romances between the friends themselves, the changes in their careers, and the absolutely absurd situations everyone seems not to be able to avoid, it is also equally memorable for its numerous romances not only within the group, but with many, many other people. These romances made the whole run more interesting! Remember when Jean Claude Van Damme made an appearance and romanced one of the characters? It’s not easy to forget Barry. After all, he was central to the story beginning in “The Pilot,” after being left at the altar after his bride, who is one of our main Friends characters, realized she did not love him and ran off! Later on, it is revealed that he cheated on her with Mindy, the maid of honor. Mindy and Barry get married in the season two finale, though later on, they break up because he cheats on her too.

Damn, did you know the action icon Van Damme was on this show? Well, your eyes do not deceive you, because he certainly was. Playing as himself in season 2, he was supposedly starring in a movie called Outbreak 2: The Virus Takes Manhattan. Since this friend was too nervous to talk to him, she got one of the gang to do it for her. They end up going on a date after the latter tells Van Damme that she is interested in a threesome with him and Drew Barrymore!

Seen in the episode “The One With The Tea Leaves,” Jim asks our female protagonist on a date after they bump into each other enough times while out on their respective errands. Though he is initially polite, he turns out to be a bit inappropriate and a little creepy too! In an attempt to intimidate her more, he claims that he wrote erotica for children which were apparently “wildly unpopular.” This encounter leads to her calling him the “rude guy.”

It seems like he and our girl got along quite well for a long time, except for one troubling detail: he was not real! His existence is a lie Ross agreed to perpetuate so that our lady friend could pretend to Mike, the current apple-of-her-eye, that she had been in a long-term relationship before. Apparently, Vikram is a kite designer who had a glue sniffing addiction, but this character and Vikram were in a relationship of six years. Ross even hilariously pretended to be Vikram on her answering machine.

To get over her previous break up with Ross, this character dates a guy (rebound, sadly) called Russ, who looks and acts exactly like Ross! They apparently never notice the similarities though, no matter how much our friends point them out. When she finally comes to her senses, she breaks up with him. Russ, depressed, finds his way into the arms of Julie, with whom Ross recently broke up with! The two end up attracted to each other, and Julie doesn’t see the resemblance either.

Which Character Dated Paolo?

Paolo is an Italian man who is not so well versed in English, but makes up for it with jewelry, clothes, and sex of course! And he really exists as more of a contrast to Barry, with whom this character did not really have sex. But she breaks up with him when he tries to flirt with one of her friends. She later has a one night stand with him when she finds out that Ross and Julie have begun to date.

He was the first date of this character on the show, and appears in “The Pilot.” Though he charms her into bed, it turns out to be based on a lie he made up; that he was impotent/was not able to perform well sexually ever since his wife left him. When this character found out about this deceit, she learns that it was not only her who’s heard that line from him before, she dumps him, and stomps on the watch that he left on her floor. You go girl!

A busboy and poet, Julio was our this friend’s date during her time working at that 50’s diner themed restaurant. She ultimately left him, because she thought that the poem he wrote, “The Empty Vase,” was about her, and her being empty and vapid, or shallow. But Julio explained himself that it was not, which should have cleared that up right? Nope. He meant the poem for all women, “especially American women.” Uh, sure, Julio, you just keep telling yourself that.

Which Character Dated Roger?

Roger appeared in the episode “The One With The Boobies,” in which he was a psychologist. Our female protagonist dated him, but then ended up breaking up with him after realizing she hated him (everybody basically says the memorable line “I hate that guy!”) because he psychoanalyzed her and her friends. For example, he correctly postulates that Chandler’s parents were divorced and that Ross married a lesbian so that Monica would feel better about herself. In the end, things end up not working out for them.

Gavin was an employee at Ralph Lauren when one of our friends has to take her leave due to pregnancy. When she returns, she thinks that Gavin is out to get her job - permanently! There is a lot of sexual tension throughout this situation though because the two end up kissing despite his reported attempts to steal her job. They end up breaking it off, as our girl is still too in love with Ross to enter into a new relationship.

Which Character Dated Bob?

This is a complicated one, because it involves not only Bob and this character, but also Joey and another girl named Angela! So it goes like this: Angela and Joey have broken up, so he tells his current date (was it Monica, Rachel or Phoebe?) that Angela is Bob’s sister, when in fact she is his current girlfriend! Things turn out better (or worse?) for both of our friends when they end up breaking the two apart and taking home their respective dates.

No, not the guy who eats chalk, but the Carl we see in the season one finale. He is the date of this friend, but things go awry quite quickly when she finds out that someone else is, in fact, in love with her. She starts to fantasize about him, sharing a kiss with him in the daydream, while Carl rambles on about his electric car and Ed Begley, Jr. She soon leaves her date to pick up her dream man from the airport.

Tim was a sous chef who looked pretty dang good too! On the downside, he was a bit too clingy. He worked in Monica’s restaurant, and it seemed like this character liked him well enough that she could not wait to get “sous-neath” him. But then, he calls about a million times just to check up on her, and we can see the disdain (and fright?) on her face when he says “I feel like it’s always me calling you!” Which was probably true anyway.

Though brilliantly played by Alec Baldwin, Parker was perhaps a bit too brilliant. In fact, he was often excited by everything and anything. Which is a bit annoying despite his good-naturedness and niceness. He was way too wacky, cheerful, and energized and he complimented her in over-the-top ways, even about the littlest of things. In the end, she breaks up with him and shouts at him, stating she wants him to “be less happy.” To which he responds by complimenting her argument.

That’s right folks, not even the other main friends are really safe from the dating lives of our ladies. And so Joey Tribbiani finds himself smack in the middle of a fling with one of his friends . It is in season eight that he begins to develop feelings for her, but she turns him down. In season nine, it’s this character who catches the elusive feelings! But when they attempt to get intimate, things turn out to be incredibly awkward, and the two realize that they won’t ever move past being just friends.

Things get a little strange between these two, as he is actually Richard’s son (her boyfriend who was 21 years her senior)! They actually first run into each other in “The One With Chandler in a Box,” and though there is some attraction, their first kiss just reminds them of other people in their lives. For her, this is Richard (his father!) and for him, his mother. Uh, okay? Definitely not a good idea! Besides, she still has feelings for Richard.

Though this was really quite twisted (hence the title of the episode “The One With the Ick Factor”), it is pretty freaking hilarious, we have to admit. This character and Ethan end up engaging in a not-so innocent tryst after he confesses that he’s a virgin who’s a senior in college, while he thinks she is still 22 years old. Afterwards, their lies are exposed as Monica admits she is 26 while he reveals that he is still a senior in high school. Yikes, ”it’s icky!”

Apparently starting as a stalker of Ursula’s, he accidentally meets this character instead, whom he has mistaken for Ursula. She confronts him about this, after which he learns of the truth of the two characters. The two start dating in the hopes that he will get over his creepy and unhealthy obsession with Ursula (which made him totally “love drunk”), but it turns out even that doesn’t do it. Upon learning that he continues to stalk, this character, of course, has to drop the man.

Ah yes, poor old Joshua, whom this character met while working as a personal shopper. Though he may have completely missed the signals as they went flying over his head, our female protagonist fell head over heels for him anyway. So much so that she proposed to him on their fourth date, which creeped him out. But when she tried to apologize, she failed even more miserably as the three girls were all wearing wedding dresses! It’s pretty reasonable for him to zoom right out of that place.

You know, Eric is pretty decent (not to mention gorgeous, as he is played by Sean Penn), but he has to get his stuff together. He was actually the ex-fiancé of Ursula, who was lying to him so that they would stay together. When her sister spills all of the lies, this character realizes she actually likes him and begins to date him. The relationship is said to be, “too weird,” when he has trouble differentiating between the two characters, after sleeping with Ursula yet again.

This character and Chip date in “The One With The Cat,” and we suppose dreams really do come true as he was her crush way back in high school. But some dreams are meant to stay dreams. It turns out that Chip Matthews has not matured at all since high school, and this easily puts our dear, poor protagonist, who fell into this sinkhole fast, in an awkward position. As a quip, she remarks how she was finally able to date and break up with, “Chip Matthews in high school.”

Doe-eyed with impressive jet black hair, Tag Jones was young and high in, er, stamina. This character clearly enjoys having sex with him, as he is five years younger than her and working as an assistant at Ralph Lauren. While he gets along quite well with her friends, she feels that he is not ready to be in a serious relationship, what with her and her gang already turning thirty and him still being in his twenties. She regrets leaving him, but not for too long.

Everyone was really hyped to meet Fun Bobby, both in season one and season two. Then it turns out that Fun Bobby is not so fun after all. In the episode, “The One With The Monkey,” Bobby is depressed because of the death of his granddad. Then in season two, this character gets back together with him, though this time the fun is sucked out of him due to alcoholism. She helps him get out of it, but he becomes dull Bobby once this happens.

This guy is pretty intense: he is a millionaire, he whisks this character off to Italy on their first date, and wants to be the UFC champion. Clearly, he aims high and tries to impress. At first, she does not reciprocate his feelings, though he pursues her relentlessly. For example, he offers this character a job at the restaurant he bought. She realizes she is attracted to him once he kisses her goodbye. Sadly, he cannot part with his dream of becoming an Ultimate Fighting Champion, and she’s afraid he’ll get hurt, so she breaks up with him.

Rob is a pretty cool guy, and we can tell he is a nice guy, given that he schedules performances in children’s libraries around the city. He asks this character to perform for the children one time, and clearly, the two develop a mutual attraction. He even gives her a kiss, which removes all her nervousness about playing in front of the crowd. Their relationship gets a bit rocky though when he hears her perform a song about sex and death in front of the kids!

A diplomat from a country whose name was definitely hard to pronounce (“Ichnech...Traisn...Istan...There's a G in there”), he hardly speaks a word of English, so naturally, he has a translator. Which he brings with him during his date as well! This irritated our character to no end, so she invited another friend to date Mischa, the translator. Sergei and Mischa get into a fight, so he’s left with no translator, and the date doesn’t go as well. At least he taught this character how to sing American Pie in another language!

In the episode “The One With The Thumb,” this character dates a guy named Alan, who seems like quite a nice guy, actually. In fact, all her friends love him! But her? Eh, not so much. The ending: a break up. It was kind of difficult for her to tell the gang when she had already broken up with him though. But in the end it all turns out good, because while Alan really likes her, he does not like her friends. There were no big losses here.

Geeky and sweet, David the Scientist Guy first meets this character when she yells at him because he is arguing loudly about some science thing with his colleague Max. In reality, they were actually talking about how beautiful she was, so in the end all is forgiven - and the two date! Sadly, things do not go smoothly again in the love department for this character. David has to go to Minsk because he has a grant to study there. He returns later, but she has already moved on to another guy.

Oh boy, there were a lot of things going on here. Besides Duncan being this character’s ex-husband, he was also a gay Canadian ice skater who she decided to secretly marry so that he could become a US citizen, and not be deported. Her heart is broken when he leaves the country, which he had to do because he was an ice skater. When he returns later he asks for a divorce because he realizes he is not gay and wants to marry a woman he loves.

Played by the ever-handsome Bruce Willis, Paul was the father of Elizabeth Stevens. Elizabeth is Ross’ student whom he ends up dating, something which Paul disapproves of greatly. Paul falls in love with this character, despite their age difference. They end up going on a double date with Ross and Elizabeth. He even takes this character to his country house, and it is evident that he is nervous about pleasing her. Sadly, they break up because she feels she doesn’t know much about him.

A throwback to the 80’s! Roy Gublik appeared in “The One With The Prom Video,” as the high school prom date of one of the girls. Apparently, this guy is pretty dedicated. He has seen Star Wars 317 times and even appeared in the newspaper. He also wanted to “kick Chip’s ass for being late.” As it is revealed years later, Roy “touched her boob” when he was pinning on this character’s corsage. The relationship did not last long but hey, watching Star Wars 317 times is impressive.

Initially mistaken for a yeti (he had a huge mountain man beard), he moves into this character’s apartment, and afterwards they go on several dates when she develops a crush on him after he receives a proper haircut. She is initially convinced he was playing mind games with her so she would ask him out. This character is in for a shock though because he seems to have an unnaturally close relationship with his sister. Like, they still take baths together. Talk about awkward!

Mark was dismayed at Ross’ relationship with this character, and Ross was similarly jealous of Mark’s relationship with her. He offered to help her get a job at Bloomingdale’s, and was happy when she and Ross broke up. He always did have a crush on her. She did not pursue a further relationship with him though because she still couldn’t get over her break up with Ross. They meet again in season ten and seem genuinely nice to each other when he helps her get a job in Paris, but she decides to stay with Ross in America.

A handsome and well-situated ophthalmologist, Richard was a close family friend of this character’s parents and was married to a woman named Barbara for a long time, but the two eventually divorce. Some time later he falls in love with this character. He enjoys talking to her more than any other character during his party. He is one of her most serious relationships, and the two really have a great time together, seeming to be a great fit. Sadly, they still have to part ways at the end because while she wants to have children, he does not.

Though things could definitely have gone further, they did not, because this character really messed this one up. She meets Clifford at a hospital when his leg is all bandaged up, and she sends Joey in as a doctor to ask him questions. They find out he is 33 years old, a widower born in November, and he doesn’t like anything weird when it comes to sex. This thoroughly freaks him out, especially when he sees Joey as Dr. Drake Ramoray on his TV show! He freaks out again when Joey spills this character’s personal details to him as well.

Also known as Hums-While-He-Pees, Kyle is in the middle of a divorce when he begins seeing this character. His ex-wife begins dating Ross at the same time. It certainly smells like trouble for two of our friends. This character and Kyle date for a bit, but then apparently he reunited with his former wife, Whitney. He seems alright (if one doesn’t mind the humming while peeing), but the timing is definitely off. The reason he split with his wife was that he was “emotionally unavailable” while she was “whiny.” Looks like they set aside their differences!

Played by Charlie Sheen, Ryan is a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and works on a submarine, hence his nickname: “submarine guy.” Their relationship seems alright as they see each other every couple of years, but only for three days, before he goes back to his submarine based work. One time they get to spend two weeks together, but things do not go as planned: she catches chickenpox and he catches it too because he decides not to let “a couple of itchy spots” get between them.

In at turn of episode events, two of our characters switch identities to commit insurance fraud after one of them hurts her ankle. They end up going on a double date with the handsome doctors Rosen and Mitchell, played by the definitely handsome Noah Wyle and George Clooney. This character sits beside Dr. Rosen, apparently to show that he was her date, even though he didn’t know her real identity. The situation devolves into a competition over who could dish out the dirtiest negative qualities about each other!

Gary, a police officer, seemed entirely alright. He met this character when she was parading around with a police badge, “defending nature.” He is one of her victims, and so she has to drop her act and run away after learning that he is a real police officer. They end up going on dates, and initially develop a strong relationship, which Gary tries to move forward by moving in with her. In the end, they break up because she did not like that he shot a bird because it was chirping too loud.

First we have a cop, now we have a firefighter! He’s at hot and competent, and he has 98 “hot saves,” the highest number in the force. He’s also apparently a sensitive guy. But they did not work out because this character was dating another guy named Jason with whom she has a candlelit dinner in the park. As a firefighter, he disapproves of them having, “a flame in the middle of a wooded area.” He also finds out that she’s dating another guy at the same time. There goes their potential relationship!

This character is different from the other Josh, called Joshua. This is another Josh altogether, but not quite the guy we’d like this character to date! Though Chip never seemed to get his head out of high school, this man is also immature but in different ways. He is literally still in college, uses her to get his fix of beer, and even steals from this character and her friend as well. Uh, no thanks! Needless to say, this wasn’t a fruitful relationship. Besides, she only kept him around to make Ross jealous.

Jason is a kindergarten teacher, which means he is probably good with kids right? Oh, and have we told you he is pretty tall and has a smoking hot body? Yeah, we would probably date him too! And this character over on Friends bagged him, and another guy called Vince at the same time! This situation could only end in disaster. In fact, she does end up breaking it off with both of them because this sh*t just couldn’t work out between the three of them. Talk about awkward and unfortunate.

Though she and Scott are dating, he has not made a move to sleep with her yet, which puzzles her. She insists that she can tell by the way he looks into her eyes and holds her hip while they’re dancing that he likes her. She thinks he is not sexy enough, but Joey disagrees. In the end, he manipulates this character into begging to sleep with him and gets her to say he never has to call again.

Also known as The Screamer, and appearing in the episode titled, “The One With the Screamer,” Tommy was this character’s date to Joey’s premiere performance in the play. Played by the hilarious Ben Stiller, he was pretty ok at first! Though seemingly normal at the beginning, Tommy was hiding a not-so-normal secret behind his chill demeanor: he is an aggressive bully who screams his head off! Ross is witness to this when Tommy screams at an elderly couple sitting in their seats at the play, but Ross has a difficult time trying to prove this behavior to this character.

Larry is someone this character briefly dated in “The One Where Ross Moves In.” He seems to know and perform his job to a T. Perhaps a little too much! He deducts two points from Monica’s review because she was not wearing her chef hat. He ends up closing all the restaurants they eat in because, of course, he finds something wrong with them. He even makes a move to close down Central Perk, which is a conflict on their part because Central Perk is like, the center of Friends! He is never seen again after this episode.

Robert was this character’s date in the episode, “The One Where Monica and Richard are Friends,” and everything seemed to be going fine. That is, until they all sit down. Seems like Robert has a penchant for going commando, by which we mean he wears no underwear and lets things fly free and loose! This disturbs everybody, including his date. She tries to buy him underpants, but he confesses he does not really like wearing them. “Put the mouse back in the house!”

These two have really stood, though somewhat shakily here and there, the test of time. They popularized the term “We were on a break!” Both characters dated numerous people along the way, but the breaks were worth it in the end!

Mike was adorable, funny, and talented. Not to mention gorgeous, I mean he is played by Paul Rudd! A piano player, he actually meets this character because of total chance. Though angry at first, she realizes she likes him and continues to date him. Their relationship turns out fine and stable, as Mike even introduces her to his parents and the two move in together.

Jake shows great affection for this character, so much so that he…wears her underwear! This is revealed when he bends over to get his diary from his bag, and Joey spots him wearing the ladies’ panties. More specifically, his date’s panties. This character says she’s wearing his boxers too. The whole situation turns into a discussion of Joey’s masculinity, as Jake’s girlfriend is sure of Jake’s masculinity. Joey tries on a pair of Rachel’s underwear, and the results are definitely hilarious. Afterwards, we never see Jake again.

These two are definitely relationship goals. They have been the emotional core of the show and while things get in the way, like Chandler’s previous relationship with Janice for example, they prove that the best friends becoming lovers thing really works. They have each other’s backs, having been really close friends ever since the college years. Though they agree that their first intimate encounter was merely a fling, they actually can’t help but think of each other. They marry, get a house, and even adopt babies. These two are simply soulmates, and we can’t help but love them!
