Animation is far older than people think! In fact, it's far older than movies at all. In the Bronze Age archeological site of Shahr-e Sukhteh, archaeologists have discovered a pottery bowl that is 5,200 years old, which contains a sequence of images of a goat jumping up to eat leaves from a tree! You could take 5000 years off of that number and it would still be older than movies! The first animated film is hard to identify, but as far as most people can tell, the earliest hand drawn animated film was the movie Fantasmagorie which was made by Émile Cohl in 1908.
