Which TV Era Do You Belong In?

Is TV dying? That all depends on who you speak to. Do you want to go back and look at TV's heyday and its slow demise? Let's do it!

Today, we'll discuss TV, Hollywood, and what era you'd fall into of TV. Are you someone who prefers the classics and would best enjoy the days of black and white TV? Or, are you instead a modern-day Netflix lover content with binging on your tablet or smartphone? We'll try to figure that out over the next few minutes.

Rarely do our quizzes contain disclaimers beyond the obvious spoiler warnings, but this is one that calls for an advance. Because we're talking about where you'd fall into with regards to the history of television and Hollywood, several topics that are controversial today will be brought up. These include sexism, racism, and feminism. If you believe you are going to be easily offended or look at these topics without the proper context they are presented in, this is not the quiz for you.

But, if you are alright with what this quiz has in store and you're ready for some fun, I propose we get to business and discuss television. Not televisions as in what to buy. There's probably another quiz for that.

Question 1

How do you watch The Walking Dead?

If you don't watch The Walking Dead, you can insert whatever one of your favorite non-Netflix or Amazon Prime exclusive shows are. My point here is that with a show like The Walking Dead that airs on TV, you have so many different ways of watching it. Which of the following ways, however, are you going to use to remain interested in Rick Grimes' adventures against silent but deadly zombies?

Question 2

What is your feeling on black face?

Well, we did warn you there would be some questions that might be a bit controversial, but that's the history of television and Hollywood for you. I'm not going to pretend to be a fan of blackface, although I will say shows like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia have not only done a good job parodying it, but tackling the moral issue that comes with wearing it. What do you think?

Question 3

Which of these 'taboo' topics should absolutely remain off-limits?

I think we're slowly starting to hit the point of nothing being taboo anymore because of political correctness, but who knows? People were pretty pissed off when Rick Grimes, a white man, hooked up with Michonne, a black woman, on The Walking Dead. Yet, incest between Cersei and Jamie Lannister on Game of Thrones is acceptable? Of the following topics, which do you think should stay off the airwaves? No judging.

Question 4

What makes a good superhero show?

Again, I praise Batman: The Animated Series for being just so awesome, but it was and remains THE most influential superhero show for many people. True, the 1960s Batman and Spider-Man shows had charm, but BTAS featured pretty much all of these things AND Mark Hamill's Joker. How can you go wrong? If you had to choose one of the below options, however, where would you go?

Question 5

Did the show "Dear White People" offend you with its title?

If you're late to the party, I'll do my best to keep this simple. In 2014, a movie titled "Dear White People" was released about life for black youth at a mostly-white Ivy League University. Earlier this year, a Netflix series that is essentially a reboot offended people with its title. Be honest: would you - or were you - offended by the show's title?

Question 6

Which of these Netflix-original shows could you binge on?

For as skeptical as some of us may have been regarding more and more Netflix-original series, there have been so many great releases over the years. Yes, we're going to count The Defenders and the other MCU shows as Netflix-originals because, well, they were released first on Netflix. The other shows are all legitimate Netflix-exclusives, so start thinking about your favorite shows and pick.

Question 7

Who was your favorite Batman?

It should be no secret Batman has had plenty of actors over the years, but which do you prefer most? Is it the campines of Adam West or the darkness of Michael Keaton? Does Kevin Conroy earn the role after basically being THE Batman since Batman: The Animated Series, or do relative newcomers Christian Bale or Ben Affleck win? No, we're not including George Clooney.

Question 8

Is feminism in media pushed too hard?

From what I've seen of Piper Chapman in Orange is the New Black, she's a pretty endearing character. However, me using the word pretty as an adjective would draw flack from some because I am using that in the context of a woman. Feminist agendas have been pushed often in recent years, especially by the media, but is there a line that needs to be drawn?

Question 9

What are you drinking at a party?

A weird question to put in a personality quiz about which TV era you fit in? Perhaps, but it's a personality quiz! Not everything has to do with the topic at hand! And yes, there is an option for those of you that do not drink. I may be many things, but inconsiderate is not one thing. What are you drinking?

Question 10

What makes a strong female character?

For me, Maggie Greene is a perfect example of what a female character should be in Hollywood: she's smart, she has character, she's good at her role in the plot (i.e. surviving the apocalypse and being a leader), and nothing about her ever feels forced. But, as we'll soon discuss, that is not always the case with the modern fictional women. What do you think makes a strong female character?

Question 11

Should a racist character like Merle Dixon be allowed on TV?

If you're unfamiliar with The Walking Dead's Merle Dixon (played by Michael Rooker from Guardians of the Galaxy), his entire character is being a racist redneck stereotype. However, Merle slowly begins to seek redemption and ends up, somewhat begrudgingly, re-joining the main cast after being left for dead. That's good and all, but should a character that uses racial slurs as insults be allowed on TV?

Question 12

What is your favorite sport?

Advancements in TV and technology have not only helped some of the aforementioned shows and topics, but the sports world. Now, we have networks for each of the main sports - and, for collegiate sports, networks relating to certain conferences (i.e. the ACC and SEC each have their own network); there are packages to watch every game even if you're out of the market, the ability to watch sports on Twitter, and much more. What's your favorite sport?

Question 13

What is your favorite TV theme?

Some will say that TV themes and intros doesn't matter as much anymore, especially with newer shows really only using a title screen (i.e. AMC's Fear The Walking Dead) but don't let the new era make you forget about the good old days. Remember the Batman: The Animated Series opening? I should probably start talking about that show, so I put some other shows as answers.

Question 14

Who is your favorite Justice League member?

Finally, I get to use the animated Justice League as a picture for one of these quizzes. Sorry, but Kevin Conroy > Ben Affleck any day of the week when it comes to playing the Dark Knight. But, which of these characters is generally your favorite? And yes, we had to include Aquaman, even if he is DC's version of Iron Fist. What, too soon?

Question 15

Which NBA team do you like most?

Am I the only one surprised at how soon the NBA's return is? With the season starting in mid-October this year, training camps will begin later this month with preseason games shortly thereafter. How bad will my Brooklyn Nets be? Actually, not too bad if all goes well! Of these teams, which is either your favorite or the one you're rooting for most this season? Or, if you don't like basketball, has the best name and colors?

Question 16

Which channel do you think of when you think about NFL on TV?

Over the years, the National Football League has gone from being on one channel to having entire channels dedicated to it; one of which, the NFL Network, began in 2006. Say what you want about Commissioner Roger Goodell, but he's certainly figured out to make the league a ton of money. When you think of the NFL being on TV - and by extension, criticizing FOX's Joe Buck (left) and Troy Aikman - what network do you think of?

Question 17

Which of these shows could you go on a non-stop binge of?

During The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror XXVII, poor, sane Frank Grimes reveals that his eternal punishment in Hell is to rewatch every single Simpsons episode in order. All (then) 600 of them. Hopefully, your bingewatching will be a bit more fun, yeah? Of the shows below, which could you go on a non-stop binge of? And no, they obviously don't have to be on Netflix.

Question 18

Which news station are you turning to in a crisis?

I know, we hate to think about there being a crisis, but we need to turn to the news at some point, right? Some of us hate watching the news because it's too negative, but I've always thought watching the news - regardless of how much you like the topic - is important. Of the following outlets, which are you checking out when you most need news?

Question 19

What are the best commercials?

You know why the Super Bowl is always breaking ratings record each year? Commercials! You have commercials about booze and alcohol, you have commercials about cars, and you have commercials people call racist and sexist for the smallest things! Remember the Doritos add a few years ago that was called sexist and ignorant because it "humanized a fetus" when said fetus went running for a chip? Sigh....

Question 20

Which of these channels do you like most?

Yet another random question? Sure, why not? We're talking about TV, which has always been full of randomness; that's especially true for these channels, even ESPN! If you don't believe me, watch SC6 (the re-branded SportsCenter starring Jemele Hill and Michael Smith) and tell me it's not random. So of the following channels, whether you like randomness or not, do you like most?

Question 21

Who is your favorite TV actor of these five?

How did we pick these five actors, you ask? Four of them are on fantastic shows (well, if you can call The Walking Dead fantastic anymore) and the other is on a decent show but makes enough money, so it'd be hard to leave Jim Parsons off. But of the following actors, regardless of how much they're earning, who do you like the most?

Question 22

Who had the best talk show?

Yes, we're counting late night shows here because, really, there's too many of those for it to be a separate question. Let's just leave it here and get on with it. Personally, I've always liked Jimmy Kimmel's show - Liewitness News is a must-see, especially during sports season - but all of these shows are great. Steve Harvey's, if you haven't seen it, is fantastic. Who do you like?

Question 23

Which of these was the best superhero show?

You knew I was going to ask this at some point, right? It would be flat out wrong for me not to ask a question about the best superhero shows, let alone me asking it and not mentioning Batman: The Animated Series along with the others. For me, believe it or not, I think I'd still pick Batman: The Animated Series over Daredevil RIGHT NOW. That'll likely change after Daredevil season 3. What do you think?

Question 24

Which of these new shows are you excited for?

What you see in front of you is a show titled The Good Doctor, one with an interesting premise. From IMDB: "A young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome is recruited into the pediatric surgical unit of a prestigious hospital. The question will arise: can a person who doesn't have the ability to relate to people actually save their lives?" I can't wait to see how quickly before people call the show ignorant. Which show are you most interested in?

Question 25

Which era of TV fascinates you the most?

In the grand scheme of things, there really have been only five or six eras of television: there's the analog days, which went up until about 1980. Then, we had the MSOs (multi-system operators) which covered the 1980s, clearing the way for the digital era and the 1990s. In the 2000s, we obviously entered the High Definition era and now, we're in the Streaming Era. Which one intrigues you the most?
