The new movie adaptation of Stephen King's It has been doing phenomenally well at the box office. In just three weeks, it grossed more than $400 million worldwide, which is virtually unheard of for a horror movie. It is now the highest grossing horror movie of all time. The success of the movie proves that true filmmaking is what the horror genre is missing. For all the success that found footage horror movies have had with their low production value, even the likes of Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity. it's nowhere near $400 million. It just goes to show that spectacular visuals, complex and layered storytelling, and genuine cinematic composition are what audiences really want to see, not just in other walks of cinema, but in horror, too. Director Andy Muschietti wasn't making a horror movie; he was making a movie. Every frame is carefully considered to be a beautiful work of art. You don't often get that in horror.
