On September 22, 1994, the legendary sitcom Friends premiered on NBC. The series follows a group of six 20-30 somethings trying to navigate life and love in New York City: Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Rachel Green (Jennifer Anniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry). The gang is well known for hanging out in the coffee house called Central Perk - in fact, the show was originally going to be named Insomnia Cafe.

The series quickly gained popularity and a dedicated fanbase. The cast was instantly launched into superstardom. It lasted 10 seasons, spanning 236 episodes in total. It was nominated for 62 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002. It is now considered one of the most popular television shows of all time. TV Guide ranked it #21 on their list of 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time; Writers Guild of America listed it as #24 on their 101 Best Written TV Series list.

Question 1

"I don’t move on Sundays.”

This character is shocked when someone points out that they have gained a few pounds. Monica makes it her mission to help them get into shape. The two become workout buddies, doing sit ups and jogging. But the training is a bit too intense and by the end of the week, they are exhausted. When Monica knocks on their door to go for a workout, they shut the door in her face, saying: “It’s a Sunday. I don’t move on Sundays.”

"I'd pee on any one of you!”

An eventful trip to the beach takes place over several episodes at the end of season three and the beginning of season four. Three of the friends share a traumatic experience when one of them is stung by a jellyfish. According to a program on the Discovery Channel, peeing on a jellyfish sting would alleviate the pain. When the others express disgust, one of them defends themselves by proclaiming: “If I had to, I'd pee on any one of you!”

One of the characters has a crush on another, but they are dating someone else. Not only that, but their crush is constantly bringing their significant other to all of their gatherings. The entire situation is driving the character insane. It gets even worse when they find out that one of the other friends, who knows the situation, secretly goes shopping and has lunch with the significant other. "I stalk guys and keep their underpants."

Two of the characters are in a secret relationship. They are desperate to keep it hidden from the rest of the group for as long as possible. They almost get caught when one of them accidentally leaves their underwear at the other’s apartment and the latter’s roommate discovers them. The roommate is disgusted and demands to know why they are here. The couple is forced to come up with a fake story to explain, with the woman saying:” I’m disgusting. I stalk guys and keep their underpants.”

"Pivot! Pivot! Pivot!"

In this episode, one of the friends buys themselves a new couch. When the delivery fee is too high, they decide to carry it to their apartment themselves. They enlist the help of two other characters, lying that there is an elevator in their apartment when there actually is not. The three of them attempt to carry it up the stairs, but are trapped in the tight corner. The friend implores them to turn quickly by yelling “Pivot! Pivot! Pivot!”

"Your collective dating record reads like a who’s who of human crap!"

This character is dating someone who seriously annoys the rest of the gang with their enthusiasm. They catch their friends making fun of their date behind their back and lets them have it. “Do I make fun of the people you’ve dated?” they ask. “No, because friends don’t do that. But, do you want my opinion? Do you want it? ‘Cause in my opinion, your collective dating record reads like the who’s who of human crap” they declare before storming off.

Question 7

"The fridge broke, so I had to eat everything."

This person’s fridge, that their parents bought right after they were born, tragically breaks at the start of the episode. The character’s former roommate walks in and sees them looking ill. “Well, the fridge broke. So I had to eat everything,” the character explains. “Cold cuts, ice cream, limes. Hey, what was in that brown jar?” they ask. “That’s still in there?!” the former roommate says. To which they reply “Not anymore. So anyway, how do you want to pay me?” The former roommate refuses to pay since they do not live there anymore.

"Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?"

Rachel and Joey are having trouble talking to each other after Joey admits he has a crush on her. Rachel is venting her frustration to one of her friends. “I know it’s tough now, but things will get better,” the friend insists. “How do you know that? What if it just gets worse and worse and worse, to the point where we can’t even be in the same room with each other?” Rachel asks. “I’m not great at the advice, can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?” the person replies.

"It doesn't happen to every guy, and it is a big deal!"

This quote takes place in the first episode of season four: “The One With the Jellyfish.” Ross has gotten back together with one of his exes, but there is underlying tension. She had given him a note asking him to take responsibility for everything that went wrong in their relationship. He had fallen asleep and was not aware he agreed to this. When all is revealed, the two fight and break up again. She tells him: “Just so you know, it's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy, and it is a big deal!”

The girls discover that the guys host a poker night without including them and demand in. One problem - they have no idea how to play the game. The guys are forced to teach the girls how to play and sit through several nights of games, which the girls end up losing every time. After a few tries, they begin to get the hang of it and things get competitive. One of them says: “Ahhh, I fold like a cheap hooker who got hit in the stomach by a fat guy with sores on his face.”

After years of being stuck in a job he hates, one of the characters finally gets the courage to quit and try to figure out what they really want to do. After a stint with unemployment and some soul searching, he settles on advertising. Before even breaking into the field, he tries out a few practice pitches, such as: “Cheese, it’s milk that you chew...Crackers, because your cheese needs a buddy.” One of the practice slogans is “Pants. "No uterus. No opinion."

One of the women has a scary moment during her pregnancy. She is in a lot of pain and is taken to the hospital. It turns out that she was experiencing Braxton-Hicks contractions, which the doctor describes as mild discomfort caused by contractions in the uterine wall. She is more than a little annoyed at the doctor’s dismissal of her pain, especially since he will never experience it. When someone else tells her that most women don’t even feel them, she retorts: “No uterus. No opinion.”

"If we were in prison, you guys would be like my bitches."

Two of the women are fighting over a guy. One of them expressed that she had a crush on a famous actor, but was too nervous to approach him. The other offers to do it for her, but the man ends up preferring her instead. The argument escalates when one of them flicks the other and they begin to wrestle. One of their other friends breaks it up by grabbing them each by the ear. “There we go,” she says. “You know what, if we were in prison, you guys would be, like, my bitches.”

"I’m hopeless and awkward and desperate for love!"

One of the friends is in a committed relationship, and it’s freaking them out. Even though they love the person they are with, the idea of being a couple terrifies them. They fear that they are going to panic and say something stupid that will ruin everything. In their effort to prove that they are not afraid of commitment, they end up overdoing it. “Oh, no, no, no, don't go! I've scared you!,” they realize. “I've said too much! I'm hopeless, and awkward, and desperate for love!”

"You ever realize Captain Crunch’s eyebrows are actually on his hat?"

This takes place in the opening scene of the season two’s sixteenth episode. Two of the friends, who are also roommates, are sitting in their kitchen eating breakfast in the morning. One of them looks at the cereal box and notices something weird. “You ever realize Captain Crunch’s eyebrows are actually on his hat?” they ask. Hint: The roommate replies that it is much weirder that the man has been a captain of a cereal for the last 40 years.

"I’m curvy and I like it!"

Rachel’s mean sister Amy visits to announce that she is getting married to an old man. Rachel convinces her not to go through with it, with the unintended consequence of having Amy move into her apartment. Her sister drives everyone crazy with her antics and self-centered attitude, particularly Rachel’s roommate at the time. She keeps making comments about food whenever they try to eat. When they pick up a slice of pizza, she asks if they are sure they want to eat that. The roommate declares: “I’m curvy and I like it!”

"He's her lobster!"

One of the most famous episodes is “The One With the Prom Video.” It is best known for the moment at the end when Ross and Rachel finally set aside their differences and get together. One of the characters knows that the two will end up together from the beginning because Rachel is his lobster. “It's a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life,” they explain. When the two finally kiss they exclaim, “See, he’s her lobster!”

During one of the Thanksgiving episodes, Rachel invites her assistant Tag to dinner. At first he declines because he is spending the day with his girlfriend, but he shows up and reveals that they have broken up. Rachel has a crush on him and wonders if it is appropriate to make a move. One of her friends asks if the guy even likes her back, “Because if he doesn't like you, this is all a moo-point.” When the others question what a moo point is, they explain “Yeah, it's like a cow's opinion. It just doesn't matter. It's moo.

Towards the end of the series, the gang is preparing for Rachel’s going away party before she moves to Paris. At the same time, Monica and Chandler are expecting their surrogate, Erica, to give birth to their baby any minute now. Plus they are packing up the apartment for their move to the suburbs. It is a simultaneously stressful and exciting time for everyone - there is a lot of work to be done. One of them instructs the others what to do and adds “If I’m harsh with you, it’s only because you’re doing it wrong.”

Phoebe is in the middle of her pregnancy. She is hungry, but everything she tries to eat makes her feel sick. She realizes that the baby is making her crave meat, but she is a vegetarian. In a shocking act of betrayal, one of the friends kisses another’s girlfriend. The two had been flirting with each other for a while before then, and they feel terrible about it. When the person finds out their friend has gone behind their back, they are understandably furious. Their friend apologizes profusely and admits that it was over the line. “Over the line?” they exclaim. “You’re so far past the line that you can’t even see the line. The line is a dot to you!”

"Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it!"

This quote is from the very first episode of the series - “The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate.” Rachel has just run away from her wedding and has been cut off by her father. She moves in with Monica and gets her first real job at the coffee shop. The group all gathers around and encourages her to cut up her credit cards. Once she finally manages, one of the characters tells her” Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it!”
