Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?

1.6K Shares

In 1987, Hironobu Sakaguchi partnered with Square to release Final Fantasy on the Nintendo Entertainment System, a move that has defined the future of RPG style video games to the present day. The Final Fantasy series, like the genre in general, has developed greatly since its earliest inception, yet as the highest selling non-Pokémon RPG title, it continues to set the trends for what gamers expect when trying a new game.

Some of the trademarks set by Final Fantasy include the active time battle system, summoning spells, fantastical creatures like moogles and chocobos, and incredibly well written characters who drove their stories. Obviously, some games got it better than others in this regard, yet by and large, the writing has always been what Final Fantasy fans tend to enjoy the most. In particular, several of the series’ protagonists have redefined heroism to generations of gamers, making them all iconic in one way or another.

The first few Final Fantasy’s were a little light on the story, with a stronger focus on tactical gameplay, and the more recent titles are going off the rails a little bit, with some fans suggesting Square has entirely lost its way. No matter what happens in the future, though, we’ll always have the golden years from Final Fantasy IV up to X to look back on and enjoy. If you want to be a hero yourself and can’t decide which adventure you’d want to go on, take our quiz and find out which classic Final Fantasy protagonist you have the most in common with.

Question 1

What kind of weapon would you use?

A whole lot goes into what makes a great Final Fantasy hero iconic, yet as is often the case, first impressions play a huge role in how most gamers view a character. Given the inherently violent nature of these games we love, the unique and creative weapons they carry play a big part in what we first think about our characters, starting to form opinions from the first time we select “attack.”

Question 2

Why are you trying to save the world?

In almost every Final Fantasy game, saving the world is ultimately some sort of secondary issue the characters stumble into while seeking to attain some other goal. Even so, there comes a point when they have to stop and ask themselves if any of it is their business, and if they have the will to keep fighting increasingly impossible battles. What inspires you to fight for all humanity?

Question 3

Do you have a love interest?

Starting with hints throughout Final Fantasy VI, the idea of characters in a given Final Fantasy game being romantically involved with one another has lead to widespread discussion amongst fans. Later titles recognized this debate by making it abundantly clear some characters were in it entirely for love, while others continued leaving it up to debate. Would you define yourself with love, or would you write a different kind of story?

Question 4

What’s your favorite summon?

All right, enough characterization and personality based discussion. Let’s talk about something Final Fantasy fans actually care about for at least one question—summons. Gigantic, vicious monsters that for one reason or another are willing to help certain humans in their quests against evil. While some aren’t entirely useful later on in the games, every fan nonetheless has a favorite beast from beyond. What’s yours?

Question 5

Which Final Fantasy character would you most want to date?

With apologies to anyone not into ladies, but most of the Final Fantasy protagonists over the years have been men. The one prominent female of the classic era was also one of the few to reject the idea of romance, meaning if you were going to be a Final Fantasy hero, these four ladies are pretty much it for your romantic options. Granted, there’s nothing wrong with how any of them look, so who would you pick?

Question 6

What kind of magic would you use?

Whether you happen to be a full-on black mage or merely a knight who dabbles in a little light healing now and again, virtually every single Final Fantasy hero in history has used some sort of magic. Let’s face it, when the enemies are throwing fireballs at you, simply fighting back with a sword isn’t going to cut it. Luckily, the average Final Fantasy universe offers plenty of options for fighting fire with fire. Which would you choose?

Question 7

Do you get along with your parents?

Believe it or not, even the strange and eccentric characters leading Final Fantasy games have parents somewhere in their worlds. Some of them have parents extremely similar to themselves, while others are wildly different, and things have been either fantastic or terrible between them for both reasons. How a person gets along with their parents can sometimes define who they become, so how are you in that regard?

Question 8

Which Final Fantasy race/species do you like the most?

In addition to the magic, the weaponry, and the fantastic writing, one thing Final Fantasy fans keep coming back for is the unique cast of critters populating the game worlds. Though few characters or locations cross over from one Final Fantasy to the next, many of the monsters, both friendly and hated, appear throughout several games. The same is true of certain semi-human species, connecting the series in more ways than just the fantastical.

Question 9

What era of history is your favorite?

One thing fans have always loved about Final Fantasy is that the series doesn’t always conform to the norm in what is expected of an RPG. Granted, some of the early series titles did exactly that, offering vague stories of fated heroes rescued random princesses. As time went on, however, they created new worlds based on various points in history, or what they imagined the future might be like. Which time would you want to live in?

Question 10

Which job description best suits you?

Because there wasn’t enough space to make Ramza Beoulve a potential answer on this quiz, we figured this would be a good time to shout out the hero of Final Fantasy Tactics. A big part of that game, as well as Final Fantasies I, V and X-2, and to lesser extents some other titles, was the idea characters could pick their “jobs,” learning unique skill sets as they gained experience in doing so. Which one was your favorite?

Question 11

How much time do you put into hair care?

Okay, so this question might look a little weird on the surface, but let’s face it—the heroes of Final Fantasy tend to have some of the wildest hairdos in all of video games. Mario might be eccentric for a plumber, but his hat kept things simply follically speaking, and it’s as though RPGs decided to take the total opposite route. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but that’s all a matter of debate. All we want to know is whether or not you spend hours making every strain of hair look just right.

Question 12

What would you do if not busy saving the world?

Taking responsibility for the entire planet is no small feat, and not one the various Final Fantasy protagonists enter lightly. Quite frankly, it’s hard to imagine any actual everyday folk deciding that the imminent destruction of earth could only be stopped if they took action, and if they did, they’d be branded insane. Therefore, even if you did feel the inclination to take matters into your own hands and become a hero, you might think twice about it. After talking yourself out of it, what would you do instead?

Question 13

What’s the most annoying Final Fantasy status effect?

For all the millions of reasons fans adore Final Fantasy games above all other RPGs, there are also countless examples why the series can also be considered one of the most annoying to play. Like, for instance, any time you had to fight a Malboro, the dreaded creature that can inflict just about every status effect in the series with it’s Bad Breath. Even one status effect can annoy the heck out of fans. Which is your least favorite?

Question 14

Which of the following sounds more evil?

While every Final Fantasy concerns itself with fighting the forces of evil in one way or another, in both the real and fictional world, there are countless ways for a person to describe what exactly “evil” means. Generally speaking, Final Fantasy games take the term to mean anyone trying to destroy the world, and that’s definitely a good starting point. However, each villain has their own reason for wanting to destroy the world, so which do you think is the most vile?

Question 15

What kind of leader are you?

Somehow, we’ve gotten this far into a quiz about one’s ability to be a heroic Final Fantasy protagonist without even considering whether or not you could handle the task. Of course, it doesn’t really matter if you actually have the skills to fight monsters, since monsters don’t exist. However, most people have been through some sort of real world scenario when they had to act as a leader, and some of us are better at it than others. How are you at taking charge?

Question 16

Are you an emotional person?

Despite a longstanding cliché in movies and literature that strong men (and women) don’t cry, the various heroes of Final Fantasy all went through some pretty crazy things in their lives, that could easily bring a grown man (or woman) to tears. Of course, there’s a prerequisite for crying because of a video game, in that the gamer doing so needs to be a pretty emotional person. Some Final Fantasy heroes wear their hearts on their sleeves, while others are more reserved. Which are you?

Question 17

Which villain do you dislike the most?

Forget about generalities when it comes the what kind of villain you don’t like. We’re going to take a bold leap and assume anyone taking this quiz has probably played at least one of the Final Fantasy games, thereby gaining a healthy hatred of at least one major villain. These being the most despicable bad guys in the series, it should be able for you to pick your least favorite.

Question 18

What comes to mind when you hear the name Cid?

One of the best running jokes of the Final Fantasy series has been the existence of a man named Cid in just about every game. Usually, this Cid has something to do with how your characters get an airship, either as a star pilot or inventor who revolutionized sky-based travel. What these Cid’s don’t have in common is personality, always wildly different from the last in this respect. What kind of Cid is your favorite?

Question 19

Which of the following towns would you rather live in?

One thing the heroes of Final Fantasy don’t have much say in is where they get to live. Constantly on the move seeking a resolution to their mission, the average character spends more time visiting inns and sleeping in the homes of strangers than they ever do in their actual house. This doesn’t mean they don’t have goals to ultimately settle down, though, so after the war is over, where do you want to hang your weary head?

Question 20

What would you do if the bad guys had you outnumbered?

Inevitably, every Final Fantasy game features a moment or two when it looks like it’s all over. Even if the plot doesn’t allow for such an experience, you’re probably going to run into a particularly hard boss or random encounter that gives the sense the dreaded Game Over screen is about to make an unwanted appearance. When this happens, the way a hero reacts says everything about their style. Do you put yourself and others in jeopardy and keep fighting, or find a way to fight another day?

Question 21

What’s your favorite mode of transportation?

Another frustrating experience shared in just about every Final Fantasy game is the moment gamers have been wandering around on the world map for too darn long, getting into random encounter after random encounter that no longer even help your characters gain levels. If only there was a way to avoid this hardship, like say a large and powerful steed, or an airplane of sorts. Or maybe a submarine, motorcycle, or heck, even a pogo stick—it’s a big world out there, Square, so give us a vehicle already!

Question 22

Which optional super boss do you think is the hardest?

Since we just had two questions in a row about how Final Fantasy can get a little irritating at times (albeit in what some would say is a good way), it only feels appropriate to cap them off with mention of the series’ most infamous trademark: seemingly unkillable super bosses. Usually encountered right at the end of the game, these giant weapons have more HP than anything else in the series, and can take hours to slowly defeat.

Question 23

Who is your closest ally?

While they are usually the most strongest character in their game in one way or another, the various heroes of Final Fantasy couldn’t save the world entirely by themselves. Depending on what game we’re talking about, they needed anywhere from about five to fifteen allies in the fight against evil, and even those numbers barely squeaked by with victory. However, they couldn’t invite just anyone to the fight, as these allies needed to be trusted, as well. Who would you let stand beside you in battle?

Question 24

What’s your favorite Final Fantasy mini game?

Far more than merely a quest to save the world, another quality Final Fantasy fans have come to expect and usually love from their games is, well, more games. From the hidden 15 panel puzzle game in the original title to more beloved mini games like Triple Triad or Blitzball, characters in Final Fantasy games seem to enjoy putting their mission on hold for a minute to play cards or sports with every single human being they meet. Would you be the same way with one of these games?

Question 25

Which of the following Final Fantasies is your favorite?

All right, so we’ve asked you just about everything we can about your personality, performance as a leader, and preference in Final Fantasy lore, so let’s just cut to the chase here. A person’s favorite Final Fantasy doesn’t necessary contain their favorite hero, but it does say a little bit about the type of gamer they are, and indeed, the type of human being. That in mind, the last thing we ask you is which of these classic titles you think is best.
