The 1980s was a decade that gave us an incredible amount of amazing films to watch, particularly those made by the legendary John Hughes. The man simply understood how to write and incorporate what people wanted to see, and as such, he was responsible for some of the most successful movies of the decade. Among his films, The Breakfast Club has long been considered among his finest works. The film was made on a tiny budget, and it would go on to become a smash hit at the box office, becoming a classic in the process.

The film is centered on a group of students spending their Saturday in detention, and while this may seem like an odd premise for a film, John Hughes was able to give us relatable characters having conversations that we have all had with the people we grew up with. We laughed, cried and were entertained throughout the entire film, and it is one that is watched on repeat to this very day. It is hard to find other teen movies that come anywhere close to being in the same class as this film.

Can You Name This Rebellious Character?

This character is easily one of the most famous to come from the decade, and he functions as the funniest character in the movie. The interesting part of this film is that each character is given plenty of opportunities to shine, and there is no character that stands out more than this one here. He has a lot on the line, and one can only assume he turned is act around.

Andrew Clark has one of the most unique arcs in the entire film, and just when you think that you know him, he goes ahead and reveals a knew aspect of himself that makes you appreciate him all the more. He has both pleasant and tense moments with each character during the film, particularly with Bender and Allison as they are all spending their Saturday together. He was very rigid when he was first brought into the library for his stay in detention.

Each character in this film has a ton of flaws that make them all relatable. Not only can we see ourselves in these characters, but we can also see people we know and went to school with. This is partly why the film has remained such a classic after all these years, They all bare their souls to each other during their stay in detention, and one of them is willing to admit that they are a compulsive liar to the rest of the group.

It is something that you don’t see coming at all, and it goes without saying that this character turned heads when their drastic makeover was eventually revealed to the rest of the people that were in detention.

We can almost guarantee that once this film was released, this particular line was used by every single tough guy that ever saw the film.

Bender’s life at home is one of the more depressing aspects of the film, and although he doesn’t spend too much time talking about the way things are, what he does reveal is a cold reality for the rest of the students. At one point, he is going in on Claire about the lavish life that she has been given, and he points to the fact that she is wearing nice earrings that she didn’t have to pay for. It is during this exchange that Bender reveals what his dad got him.

The students were in quite the pickle when they were walking through the hallways of the school, and Bender was willing to sacrifice himself so that the rest of them could live to see another day. So, he ran through the halls singing old military songs and ripping things off of the walls, eventually getting the attention of Vernon and leading him to an area of the school that was completely empty. Vernon ends up catching Bender doing something unusual?

The students end up making the poor decision to roam the halls when they are supposed to be sitting in the library, and this ends up being a sticky situation when their route back is blocked off. Bender is willing to sacrifice himself so that the rest of the kids can make it back safely to the library, and eventually, Bender makes his way back to the library to give his sunglasses to one of his fellow students for “better hallway vision”.

At one point during the film, the students end up whistling in unison as they are killing time. Mr. Vernon comes in, and the group quickly quieted down.

It is clear from the very beginning that Bender has a home life that is far different than what the other students are experiencing. After all, he wasn’t even dropped off at school; he walked up by himself and was almost hit by a car in the process. He decided to give Brian a hard time about how well his life at home was and, when he was questioned about the way things are for him, he clued the other students in on how awful things are for him.

Andrew Clark may not be the most popular character from the film, but many think that he is underappreciated as a character. We are able to dive in deep with his personal life as he spends his time talking with Allison, and she seems to be one of the few people that he can be transparent with. He does get along with some of the other people in the film, but Allison is the one that seems to understand him better than the rest.

In a film with endless memorable scenes, this particular one has always been a personal favorite of mine. Bender shows a willingness to be disobedient in nearly every scene of the film, and when he and Vernon decide to have a verbal sparring match, the principal decides to start tacking on detentions for Bender. The two give us a sequence of dialogue that ends with Vernon walking away after dealing out a strict punishment for the disrespectful and disobedient student.

The jocks are always known for being the popular kids in school, and high schools everywhere offer a number of sports for the students to compete in. Andrew seems to be a decently popular guy, and given the fact that his father brings up scholarship offers, he must be really good at what he does.

Little things like this are part of what makes this movie so amazing. Allison ends up swiping Brian’s wallet at one point in the film, and just when Andrew was asking Brian about his middle name, Allison injects herself into their conversation, revealing that his middle name is “Ralph, as in puke”. She goes on to reveal the contents of his wallet to Andrew, including his fake I.D. Brian’s response to why he has it is absolutely hilarious and memorable.

Given that Claire comes from a family with money, she was able to bring herself a lunch that most of us could only dream of. This particular dish wasn’t all that popular in Illinois during the 80s, and this is evident when Bender can’t even figure out what she’s eating. Her description of the dish leaves him completely disgusted.

What good is an 80s movie if it doesn’t feature something involving a prominent musician? After all, the decade was responsible for giving the world some incredible music and artists that have remained popular to this very day. There were several notable musicians who became global superstars and icons during the decade, and one of these individuals was used for a quote at the beginning of the movie. This was one moment in the film that gets overlooked, and that is practically criminal.

For those paying attention, this character makes some important appearances during the movie, and he is even shown during the film’s introduction as the theme song is playing.
