Rapping became huge in terms of popularity in the 1990s and then became ginormous commercially in the 2000s. It has its roots in blues, jazz, and early African traditions of drumming.
It killed disco, though. Not completely, but rap and the rock establishment were gaining such prominence that disco couldn't keep up. Disco became this huge ugly machine in pop culture that was sucking the life out of itself trying to recreate its original success. This caused disco to run itself into the ground by becoming an overly-saturated mess.
Unfortunately, rap seems to be doing the same thing to itself. The music industry is just trying to wring out a minutiae of whatever creativity is left in rap music and using it over and over and over again. It lacks soul these days, which is hugely ironic because that is usually what creates an original piece. It must have a lot of heart and love poured into it. It's not about raw talent anymore. Or, at least it shouldn't be just that. Sure, once in awhile the general public wants a new tune to dance to in clubs, but in recent years it has sorta become just that.
That said, how do you feel about your rap music knowledge? Do you think you can name every rapper from the 2000s? I'll only be including the rappers during that time period who made the most sales, had the most influence on the genre, and lyrical skill and creativity during that time period. The images associated with each question are typically going to be the album art of the last album the rapper in question released. If not last, then it'll be a fairly recent one.

This rapper experiments with various musical elements such as jungle, soul, and trip hop. He aims to steer away from the stereotypical gangsta image that rappers seem to have by introducing funky, unfamiliar sounds.

Later he was signed because the record labeling company wanted to inspire pride in the midwest and hopefully inspire more music there.
