There's No Way You Can Name These 90s Video Games...Or Can You?

With loot crates, yearly subscriptions, and the Ultimate Team modes, video games suck now. So why not take today to go back to a time where gameplay was important, developers took their time to make sure the released product was fantastic, and we didn't have to worry about community managers blocking us on social media solely because we raised a minor complaint?

Our only true ground rule for this quiz is that while some of these games come from long-running series, the games included are from the time period of 1990-99. Any sports games released in 1999 that were for the 1999-2000 season would be eligible, although you're not likely to find any of those here.

Also, because some of these games are from a time where gameplay was prioritized over graphics, some of these pictures aren't as clear and crisp as we normally have. If you're having trouble with the picture - you're not likely to, but if you are - then we really suggest reading the question description. Those are there to help you if you have poor eyesight and the outdated 90s graphics are a bit much.

Ready for a time of nostalgia and not having to worry about loot crates? Let's get to work.

Question 1

If you don't know this game, leave this quiz

You have to know this one, right? And no, we're not just talking about how this is a Sonic game. What other games have blue hedgehogs? Maybe some type of indie game, but we're talking about Sonic and his attempts to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik/Dr. Eggman in his conquest to make everything boring and robotic. At least Robotnik has that sweet mustache that made the cartoon worth watching. Which Sonic The Hedgehog game is this screenshot featuring Sonic and Tails from?

Question 2

Headed down to South Park...

If you've never played the first South Park game in history, what are you waiting for? Not long into the still-running Comedy Central hit's run, the Nintendo 64 released a game that saw you take control of all four boys and do everything from throwing snowballs to interacting with your favorite Colorado people. Way before Eric Cartman had a girlfriend or Mr. Garrison had his sex changes, things were simple in the first South Park game, which was officially known as....

Question 3

The first true Star Wars multimedia project

If you're young enough to remember the original Cartoon Network "Star Wars: Clone Wars" series, you might actually vaguely remember that it was part of what was called a multimedia project. Looking to capitalize on the Star Wars brand, George Lucas told the story of the Clone Wars through books, video games, and animated shows because it had worked once before. The time it happened? In the 1990s, shortly before the prequels and to tell stories in the Galactic Civil War. This video game was a huge part of the project.

Question 4

Playing as the world's greatest spy

As a kid, you probably wanted to imitate James Bond, the world's greatest spy at some point. That's the fun of video games as you actually got to play as Bond in a game that sees him take down bad guys with the same allure of bravery and badassery that makes him a legend even today. The graphics really weren't much, but if it meant playing as James Bond, you could look past some poor sprites. What was this game called?

Question 5

If you haven't played this game, you have no soul

I can't take credit for that title as it originally comes from YouTuber Slowflake, who made this joke when talking about a specific level in this game. You know that this is a Legend of Zelda game so I don't think we need to go over that part, but which game does this screenshot come from? Was it when Link awakened,, when he had to deal with Majora's Mask, when he dealt with the Ocarina of Time, or when he played with ancient stone tablets?

Question 6

Back when Super Saiyan actually meant something

Once upon a time, not every Dragon Ball game featured character customization or diverse character rosters. Back in the 90s, you were lucky to even get a true fighting game like this one where you could face someone one-on-one, utilize transformations like Super Saiyan, and pull off a Kamehameha or Big Bang Attack. Nearly 20 years before the Xenoverses of the world hit, you were left with simple - but - fun games like this. Which DBZ game are we talking about?

Question 7

Run from this annoying orange critter

Fine, maybe calling him annoying is a bit too harsh, but he's just a bit too much for some people. His game, though? We're all for Naughty Dog-created games that feature platforming, attacking enemies, and creating weapons to take out the people trying to stop us. This game may not hold up the way other 90s games do, but there are plenty of people who still love it. Which game is this annoying orange guy from? No, it's not The Last of Us.

Question 8

THIS is the first-person shooter people dreamt of

All of the first-person shooting games you love today wouldn't be a thing without this 90s classic. You'd be stuck with Mario Party, Sonic, and more had this game not taken over the world and upset a ton of people in the process. But hey, you can't hate on the classics, especially not when they give you all of the opportunities this FPS game provided. If you've yet to answer this question, we're really wondering how you're still taking this quiz.

Question 9

Get your (Poké) Balls out

Even in 2017, Pokémon is still going strong with the recent releases of Sun and Moon, but the chances of the franchise ever reaching its late 90s popularity peak might be tough. After the success of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow on the Game Boy Color, Nintendo took advantage of its other products to move and experiment with the series there. Anyone remembering the trading card games? You may not have been the biggest Pokémon fan, but even you remember this game, right?

Question 10

Mortal Kombat is how you learned to fight

We're sure there's probably some type of cardinal sin if we put Tekken or Street Fighter as an option here when the game is clearly from the Mortal Kombat series. Grand Theft Auto taught you how to shoot, Pokémon taught you how to enslave animals, and Mortal Kombat taught you how to come up with the most devastating fatalities you'd ever see in a video game. Can you tell us which game this screenshot of Sub-Zero winning (not over insert coin) comes from?

Question 11

And THIS is a fighter people dreamt of

Like with Mortal Kombat, it should be pretty obvious that is a Tekken game, but can you figure out which one? Was it from the original Tekken, Tekken 2, a crossover game, or Tekken 3? This should be another fairly easy one if you're still in the midst of this quiz - and when you finish, we won't blame if you go boot Tekken up. I think we're all in the mood to beat the ever living hell out of somebody.

Question 12

The true cause of the NFL's concussion problems

There's a common complaint with the Madden NFL series today that the NFL has intervened to alter or even take out many of the game's features out, including team customization and fans leaving games. Had this infamous scene been in a Madden game today, there might be problems when an ambulance enters the field to help an injured player and instead runs over other players in the process! Maybe that's why Tony Romo never stayed healthy. Which Madden is the ambulance from?

Question 13

The game that started it all

Based on the answers, this one is pretty much a freebie. From controlling tanks to shooting through crowds of people with whatever weapons you could find, this was a legitimate game changer - and we really wonder what would've happened had it released for the Nintendo 64 or NES. Imagine the look on parents' faces when they saw their children plowing through civilians instead of rolling through grass with Sonic or jumping on people with Mario? Which (obvious) game are we talking about here?

Question 14

Arcade basketball at its finest

This, right here, is basketball. Not what you see on TV with LeBron James vs. Stephen Curry. Not what you see in the college ranks. Not what LaVar Ball tells you. This game right here is basketball, was basketball, and will always be basketball. So many of today's players were influenced by this game, even the younger ones who were still in high school when NBA 2K hit the next-gen consoles in 2013. Which legendary basketball game are we talking about here?

Question 15

Lara Croft stars in...

It's a Tomb Raider game, that much is obvious, but which game is this picture from? Lara Croft goes traveling somewhere to search for something, meeting someone across the way who wants to kill her because of something. In that spoiler-free promo for this question, we just explained the plot of every Tomb Raider game - not that we're going to stop playing, of course. Have you figured out yet what game this picture of the amazing Lara Croft comes from?

Question 16

Turtle power....is needed to make turtle soup

Before both Michael Bay and Nickelodeon ruined them, everybody loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They were the world's most fearsome fighting team because they were heroes in a half shell and they're green. Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines, Rafeal is cool but crude, and Michelangelo is a party dude. Then, there's Splinter who was probably inviting all sorts of other sewer creatures over to have pizza and try to make more fighters. Which TMNT game does this screenshot come from?

Question 17

The early stage of first-person shooters

First-person shooters are everywhere now, especially with more and more companies (looking at you, EA) deciding that story-based narratives aren't profitable enough to continue making them. As one controversial man would say, sad! There once was a time when not only did first-person shooters exist, but they involved fascinating stories that were more than just kill a grunt and make an explosion happen. If you haven't yet clicked on what you think the answer is, then pick already or they'll come after you!

Question 18

I'm all out of bubble gum

If you can't get this one right, then wow. We even gave you what is believed to be one of the greatest quotes in video game history (we gave you the start, at least) that comes directly from this game. You'd have to be crazy or trying to deliberately fail to get this one right - and if you do, keep in mind that I'm all out of bubble gum so I'm coming for you. What video game was this?

Question 19

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a video game character can

By the time Spider-Man releases in 2018, we'd have gone close to a decade without an entertaining Spider-Man game, something that couldn't be said in the 1990s. Before Marvel had to declare for bankruptcy, the company was shelling out arcade and home games like they are now with Netflix series, including this Spider-Man beat 'em up where Peter Parker takes on some of his more infamous villains. Are you able to tell us which early 90s game this picture comes from?

Question 20

Fallout before things got too modern

What seemed to be a common complaint with Fallout 4 a few years ago was that things felt too modern science fiction and a bit too out there. What made Fallout great in the 90s, people argued, was things were out there to where there was so much mystery and the games weren't relying on what current post-apocalyptic works have used. Even if it's only a screenshot, can you tell us which Fallout game is the answer to this question?

Question 21

Hit the road and don't look back!

Shooting people with guns could be fun, but what about driving games? Maybe instead of jumping on animals or platforming, we wanted to get behind the wheel of a car and traverse a city or a race track. That's exactly what this mid-90s game was capable of doing, giving players plenty of cars to choose from as they took on missions and tested their driving ability. Which of the following games - not any that have to do with NASCAR - are we discussing?

Question 22

Star Wars before Disney got involved

If the latest Battlefront II fiasco is anything to go off of, Disney and EA are in a bad situation with Star Wars video games. Fans are really starting to lose faith years after LucasArts shut down and the Star Wars games released since then have been...mediocre at best. We're a long ways removed from games like this that put you in the cockpit of an X-Wing, let you battle the Imperials, and had true fun to it. Which game is this?

Question 23

Mario takes a different level

We tend to think of Mario as nothing more than a plump, Italian plumber that jumps on other Italians, eats mushrooms and fireflies, and fights turtles. But what if we told you that Mario had an RPG game? Yep, Nintendo wanted to try every potential game for the Mario franchise and in the 90s, gamers had the chance to experience a true RPG with everyone's favorite plumber. Do you remember the exact title of an RPG game that some people still love?

Question 24

Anyone else in the mood to hit home runs?

Unlike the Madden question, we won't ask you to name the year of this game, but the series instead. Before MLB: The Show was the only real baseball game on the market, fans had their option from plenty of games in the 90s, including ones sponsored by players like Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run. Some games were more arcadey and others offered an actual season or franchise mode. Can you look at the picture and tell us which series this comes from?

Question 25

If you're not scared yet, you will be

Because of how cartoony most games looked in the early to mid 1990s, people didn't think games would ever be truly violent or scary. Well, that all changed in part because of this fan favorite game, one which featured blood (!), gore (!), and terrifying scenes that seemed impossible for a video game. But, they were possible, turning this game into a financially successful series. We won't try to scare you here, but if you get this wrong, don't look behind you.
