There is no greater feeling of competition than the fire that rages between two skilled players in a fighting game. As soon as the announcer counts down the game clock, you can sense the tension that hangs in the air. A moment of silence and calm before the inevitable storm of button combos and lighting fast stick movements allows the player to remain calm and collect themselves before they begin a match for the ages.
Fighting games have been a staple in the video game community ever since the days of tall, obtuse arcade cabinets that lined the walls of a renovated garage and lit up the faces of bright eyed kids the world over. Nothing really compares to the feeling of being weighed down by a pocket full of quarters and a wall of machines to choose from. It's here where many of us found our calling (aka obsession) to videogames and most of us never looked back.
This quiz aims to test your knowledge of the world of fighting games across a wide array of platforms, console eras, and generations. I know some of these characters appear in different games, sometimes across the same series, so do you best to decipher which game in particular is the right answer. This 3D fighting game was an interesting venture for Marvel's superhero roster because it pitted some of the classic heroes against a slew of new villains designed specifically for this game. The game came out on Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox as well as a number of handhelds that were current at the time, including the PSP and Nintendo DS. My personal favorite fighter in the game was Venom because it was so cool to see him use the destructible environments
What fighting game lets you play as a Big Daddy?
Bioshock is one of my favorite game series of all time, with the original entry being in my top five games of all time. I was blown away to hear that this particular fighting game would let players take control of the Big Daddy to lay waste to other players in this 2D fighter. Well actually, the gloves stay on, but you get the point! This character was originally designed to be a playable character in the original entry of this acclaimed fighting series back in the 1990's, but the developer said that they didn't want to have too many Kirby characters in one game.

The 90's were a great time for fighting games, as they were the last time we would see true pixel fighters with such finesse and beauty before the transition to 3D modeled fighters. The timeless animation style of this game allows it to hold up so many years later and even had a recent entry in the series come out within the last year. This 2D fighter pits players against each other in 3 on 3 battles to the death.
Which Mortal Kombat did Baraka debut in?
Mortal Kombat was the first game series where I saw the noticable trend towards more mature and violent games. The series of course has had its share of controversy over the decades but has never failed to deliver an incredible fighting experience (well aside from Armageddon and MKvDC). The fighting series was such a source of controversy during the 90's that it became a topic of discussion in the houses of Congress, which is quite the accomplishment in my books.

Anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's probably spent a great deal of time in the arcade, and this game was one that would always have a huge crowd drawn to it. The game would eventually be ported to the Super Nintendo and has recently been revived by Microsoft as an Xbox exclusive title. The new version of the game received decent critical praise and reception and eventually received even more content and characters in the form of DLC.

This famed Japanese Role Playing franchise has been around for over two decades and spawned a series of spinoffs from the mainline series, from music rhythm games to 2D fighters. This particular question focuses on the latter of the spinoff series which allowed fans to duke it out as their favorite characters in the series. One of the unique things about this game series are the monsters that join the protagonists as their companions, and in this case, their boxing ring buddies

This was one of the fighting games that I really enjoyed back when it first came out, but as time went on, it seems that the gaming community made the unanimous decision that this fighting game was actually pretty subpar. The saving grace for this game was that it allowed players to control a plethora of superhero characters, like Batman and Superman and pit them against the likes of Raiden, Jax, and Subzero. The game also had really cool stage transitions

Yes, you read that right, a bear. I remember the first time I saw this game was an advertisement in EB Games that showed this huge grizzly bear duke it out with another character named Heihachi. The latest entry in this acclaimed 3D fighter includes this character along with another bear, the Panda. That's right, you can go and play this one on one bear fighting game. And as an added benefit, you can play as all the other characters as well, but who needs that when you have a bear?

This game is a recent release of 2018 and has received critical and commercial praise from gamers all over the world, and for good reason. I've never seen a game so closely resemble its source material, but somehow this game managed to capture the aesthetic and style of the show without sacrificing form or function. This 2D fighter is as fast paced as it is explosive and is worth playing for anyone who is a fan of the Marvel v. Capcom series or Street Fighter.

For some, Battletoads was nothing more than a joke that they would use to call Gamestop and ask how much the game traded in for. For others, the game was the true test of gaming skill, pitting players against some of the most difficult and frustrating levels of any videogame that ever graced our consoles. It was a tough, grueling slog through the game, but if you were one of the lucky few to make it past these levels, you were king of the crop.

Before this game came out, I had actually never heard of Pikachu Libre, but this fighting game made me fall in love with the character immediately. It was hilarious to see this character go up against the likes of Mewtwo in a luchador suit and absolutely decimate the competition in style. The super move for this character involves them using a boxing ring and landing a haymaker on their opponent so I would even argue that this is one of the best fighters in the game.

One of the most radical entries in the fighting game genre as of this year has been the inclusion of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this acclaimed superhero fighting game. The 2D fighter takes inspiration from the Mortal Kombat Series and it was amazing to see them include Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo. The really cool thing about their inclusion is that all of the turtles have a fairly different play style, so each one feels like their own distinct character.

If you have yet to play Final Fantasy XV, I would highly recommend it.
