There's No Way You Can Match The Fighter To The Video Game Crossover

There is no greater feeling of competition than the fire that rages between two skilled players in a fighting game. As soon as the announcer counts down the game clock, you can sense the tension that hangs in the air. A moment of silence and calm before the inevitable storm of button combos and lighting fast stick movements allows the player to remain calm and collect themselves before they begin a match for the ages.

Fighting games have been a staple in the video game community ever since the days of tall, obtuse arcade cabinets that lined the walls of a renovated garage and lit up the faces of bright eyed kids the world over. Nothing really compares to the feeling of being weighed down by a pocket full of quarters and a wall of machines to choose from. It's here where many of us found our calling (aka obsession) to videogames and most of us never looked back.

This quiz aims to test your knowledge of the world of fighting games across a wide array of platforms, console eras, and generations. I know some of these characters appear in different games, sometimes across the same series, so do you best to decipher which game in particular is the right answer. As a special hint, be sure to use the screenshot as your main influence combined with the character's move set in the description to make your best educated guess on which game the fighter comes from. Best of luck!

Question 1

What game was the Thing in?

This 3D fighting game was an interesting venture for Marvel's superhero roster because it pitted some of the classic heroes against a slew of new villains designed specifically for this game. The game came out on Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox as well as a number of handhelds that were current at the time, including the PSP and Nintendo DS. My personal favorite fighter in the game was Venom because it was so cool to see him use the destructible environments

Question 2

What fighting game lets you play as a Big Daddy?

Bioshock is one of my favorite game series of all time, with the original entry being in my top five games of all time. I was blown away to hear that this particular fighting game would let players take control of the Big Daddy to lay waste to other players in this 2D fighter. The game drew a lot of criticism for being too similar to Smash Bros, but I hope that one day, this series gets the sequel it deserves

Question 3

Where can you play as King Dedede?

This big blue penguin is usually playing the role of antagonist in the Kirby franchise for Nintendo, but when he steps into the fighting ring, the gloves come off. Well actually, the gloves stay on, but you get the point! This character was originally designed to be a playable character in the original entry of this acclaimed fighting series back in the 1990's, but the developer said that they didn't want to have too many Kirby characters in one game.

Question 4

What game lets Ryu fight Thanos?

The 90's were a great time for fighting games, as they were the last time we would see true pixel fighters with such finesse and beauty before the transition to 3D modeled fighters. The timeless animation style of this game allows it to hold up so many years later and even had a recent entry in the series come out within the last year. This 2D fighter pits players against each other in 3 on 3 battles to the death.

Question 5

Which Mortal Kombat did Baraka debut in?

Mortal Kombat was the first game series where I saw the noticable trend towards more mature and violent games. The series of course has had its share of controversy over the decades but has never failed to deliver an incredible fighting experience (well aside from Armageddon and MKvDC). The fighting series was such a source of controversy during the 90's that it became a topic of discussion in the houses of Congress, which is quite the accomplishment in my books.

Question 6

What game is Jago from?

Anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's probably spent a great deal of time in the arcade, and this game was one that would always have a huge crowd drawn to it. The new version of the game received decent critical praise and reception and eventually received even more content and characters in the form of DLC.

This famed Japanese Role Playing franchise has been around for over two decades and spawned a series of spinoffs from the mainline series, from music rhythm games to 2D fighters. One of the unique things about this game series are the monsters that join the protagonists as their companions, and in this case, their boxing ring buddies

Question 8

What game pits Lex Luthor against Jax?

This was one of the fighting games that I really enjoyed back when it first came out, but as time went on, it seems that the gaming community made the unanimous decision that this fighting game was actually pretty subpar. The saving grace for this game was that it allowed players to control a plethora of superhero characters, like Batman and Superman and pit them against the likes of Raiden, Jax, and Subzero. The game also had really cool stage transitions

Question 9

What fighting series lets you play as a bear?

Yes, you read that right, a bear. I remember the first time I saw this game was an advertisement in EB Games that showed this huge grizzly bear duke it out with another character named Heihachi. The latest entry in this acclaimed 3D fighter includes this character along with another bear, the Panda. That's right, you can go and play this one on one bear fighting game. And as an added benefit, you can play as all the other characters as well, but who needs that when you have a bear?

Question 10

What DBZ game lets you play as Goku Black?

This game is a recent release of 2018 and has received critical and commercial praise from gamers all over the world, and for good reason. I've never seen a game so closely resemble its source material, but somehow this game managed to capture the aesthetic and style of the show without sacrificing form or function. This 2D fighter is as fast paced as it is explosive and is worth playing for anyone who is a fan of the Marvel v. Capcom series or Street Fighter.

Question 11

Which was NOT a member of the BattleToads?

For some, Battletoads was nothing more than a joke that they would use to call Gamestop and ask how much the game traded in for. For others, the game was the true test of gaming skill, pitting players against some of the most difficult and frustrating levels of any videogame that ever graced our consoles. It was a tough, grueling slog through the game, but if you were one of the lucky few to make it past these levels, you were king of the crop.

Question 12

What fighting game had Solid Snake?

"Kept you waiting, huh?" Solid Snake was an incredible surprise addition to this fighitng game, which many considered to be aimed towards younger audiences, so the inclusion of a mature rated game character came as quite a surprise. In the game, he utilized Close Quarters Combat, grenades, and a drone that would lift him up to high places and made for good recovery move. Sadly, Snake would only be in this iteration of the franchise, but fingers crossed he comes back eventually!

Question 13

Link was a guest star in which fighting game?

This game series is known for bringing in fighters that players would not usually expect. For example, the more recent entries in the series have had guests like Ezio from the Assassin's Creed series and even Yoda and Darth Vader from Star Wars. This alone makes the series worth playing and it's an excellent strategy to make the fighter stand out. The entry that featured Link from the Legend of Zelda series was available on the Nintendo Gamecube and holds up well to this day.

Question 14

What game lets you play as Pikachu Libre?

Before this game came out, I had actually never heard of Pikachu Libre, but this fighting game made me fall in love with the character immediately. It was hilarious to see this character go up against the likes of Mewtwo in a luchador suit and absolutely decimate the competition in style. The super move for this character involves them using a boxing ring and landing a haymaker on their opponent so I would even argue that this is one of the best fighters in the game.

Although this character has appeared in many fighting games over the years, where is he originally from? Question 16

What fighting game recently added TMNT?

One of the most radical entries in the fighting game genre as of this year has been the inclusion of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this acclaimed superhero fighting game. The 2D fighter takes inspiration from the Mortal Kombat Series and it was amazing to see them include Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo. The really cool thing about their inclusion is that all of the turtles have a fairly different play style, so each one feels like their own distinct character.

What fighting game lets you play as Sephiroth?

This fighting series boasts a huge roster of characters from the Final Fantasy universe and first debuted on the Playstation Portable a while back. The fighting style of the game is an open 3D arena, giving combatants a wide range of tactics to use.

Question 18

What Dragon Ball series lets you make your own super saiyan?

The Dragon Ball series has always been renowned for incredible action and fight choreography, so it makes sense that the characters and events from the show should translate well to a fighting game. In the case of this series, it was sort of a swing and a miss, because no character that any of us created would ever be as cool as the actual cast members of the show. Regardless, it was cool to travel around a semi open world.

Question 19

What fighting series is adding Noctis as a DLC character?

If you have yet to play Final Fantasy XV, I would highly recommend it. The game follows a young prince named Noctis as he leaves his home after a subsequent attack and travels to find the woman to whom he is betrothed. He was also recently announced as a guest fighter for a popular fighting game series that came out in 2017 and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2018. To give you a hint, he might be fighting a bear very soon.

Question 20

What fighting game lets you play as old school megaman and pacman?

No, I'm not talking about Super Smash Bros. latest franchise entry, although both of the characters exist there as well. This particular question talks about the odd inclusion of Megaman as he appeared on the original box arts for the megaman series. In addition to this character, Pac Man was also made a competitor, but his move set is vastly different from his smash bros counterpart. In this game he uses a sort of mech to fight on his behalf.

Question 21

What fighting game is SpringMan from?

This relatively new fighting game IP from Nintendo has had fairly good success following its launch in 2017. It's a kid friendly brawler that pits characters with a diverse array of armaments and accessories against one another in 1v1 (occasionally 2v2) matches to the end. In traditional Nintendo practices, the game is the most fun when played with motion controls, harkening back to the days of the Wii when boxing your friends was all the rage, it's hard to deny the connection between the two games.

Question 22

What game features a luchador named Juan?

This 2D sidescrolling beat em up was one of my favorite games when it first came out a few years ago. The bright vivid design and color scheme were the stuff of wonders and the fighting mechanics slowly developed over the course of the game until eventually it started to feel like you were playing a combo heavy fighting game. I'm super stoked for the sequel and to see what wacky and insane characters are added to the roster of villains.

Question 23

What fighting game features this four armed frog?

The first time I saw this game was in a videogamedunkey youtube video. It seemed like the perfect game for fans of the Super Smash Brothers series, especially considering there is no sign of that game anywhere in the near future on the Nintendo Switch. This game focuses heavily on the combat aspect of those games. There are no items, so it is up to the players to have the best skills in the match and take out their opponent.

Question 24

What series is known for scantily clad beach babes?

I'll be the first to admit that I have never actually played any of these games, but I would always see them advertised and ask myself if they were actually any good. Back in the days of G4 (a gaming centric TV channel for those who might not remember), a show called X-play was always reviewing games and whenever this one came up, the running joke was about just how realistic the breast physics would be on the characters in the game.

Question 25

Chun Li is from what series?

If tests can have extra credit, than this quiz question should too, because if you don't know the answer to this one, then I just might question whether or not you really like fighting games! Chun Li was always my go to fighter in these games because she was not only able to close the gap between fighters quickly, her range of kicks allowed her to attack from a distance and then retreat, recalibrate, and resume fighting without missing a beat
