Although The Vampire Diaries ended over a year ago, it's one of those series we really don't get tired of. The perfect combination of high school drama, relationships, thrill, horror and magic, this series had us all on the edge of our seats, desperately waiting for the next episode or season. An eight year run and one spin-off later, The Vampire Diaries came to a close, and yes, all of our hearts were forever broken. Thank goodness for the gift of Netflix and the internet's ability to make the fandom live on forever...because let's be honest, whether anyone was team Stefan or Damon, we've all nostalgically re-watched this show just to put ourselves through the same emotions.
And boy, was this show full of emotions. The writers gave us ALL the feels with the cutest couples, the most romantic boys, and about as many star-crossed lover story lines they could possibly think of. In fact, the romantic story lines are so elaborate and intertwined that it's kind of difficult to keep up with who dated who, when relationships started and ended, or what even happened in these relationships. Damon and Elena have a tumultuous relationship to say the very least. Full of ups and downs, a little bit of disloyalty (Damon did go after his brother's girl, after all), but epic nonetheless. They were challenged time after time by their friends, who thought the match was bad news, by external forces trying to tear them apart, or even by their turned off humanity switches and magical spells. Whether you're team Damon or Stefan, it does seem like they were meant to be.

Oof, talk about a steamy make out sesh. Imagine you're just minding your own business with your significant other in the woods, and they decide to bite a chunk out of your carotid artery. Although their couple name doesn't have that much of a ring to it, their vampire-werewolf dynamic was the perfect combination of steamy and adorable. Although no one really saw it coming at first, it made so much sense when it happened...and their origin story makes their relationship that much better!

Kind of like Jeremy, Bonnie's relationships were never easy. Whenever something had to give, it was usually Bonnie. She lost family, friends, and lovers, time after time, for the sake of the greater good. Her last relationship of the series was probably the most unlikely, but also the best. She deserved nothing less for her final love story.

Man, things really sucked for Elena and Jeremy. The Vampire Diaries was also the beginning of the Originals. The oldest, most powerful vampires alive pay a visit to Mystic Falls during the series, completely taking over the town. Basically impossible to kill and capable of compelling even vampires, the Originals were a dangerous enemy to have in town. One particular member of the family joined the high school and started seeing one of Mystic Falls' very own high school students. Creepy, given that they're all, like, 1000 years old.

Ugh, we know. It's a painful memory for us, too. To be completely honest, although many people wanted Damon and Elena to happen, no one needed to see Stefan's heart broken. Stelena had a rocky road, like most relationships do, but they seemed so right for each other, which is why the break up sucked so much. They had a few temporary break ups, but there was one that really ended their relationship for good and forever changed the show.
Who did Caroline not date?
Hey, we're not shaming our girl Caroline in the slightest, but dang, that girl had a lot of relationships. It's kind of hard to keep up with who she did and didn't date, because it seems like everyone was after her. What can we say, we love a smart, positive, and beautiful girl like Caroline, and clearly, so did the Mystic Falls boys! The Vampire Diaries writers really took liberties with her love life. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; she didn't date absolutely everyone!
Who was Alaric's first wife?
Jeremy Gilbert isn't the only one with a troubled love life...Alaric Saltzman was pretty unlucky, too! Our favorite vampire hunter disguised as an inoffensive history teacher once had a wife that he loved more than anything else...a wife who did him real dirty. She's also the reason why he got into vampire hunting in the first place, so I guess we have her to thank for seeing his beautiful face on our screens and for becoming Elena's new guardian figure.
Why did Isobel leave Alaric?
This is probably the entire fandom's least favorite relationship. No one wants to see a kind, loving, loyal and handsome man be played and disrespected by his selfish wife. Even though he did everything he could to keep Isobel happy, he apparently wasn't enough and she ended things. What more could we expect from the woman who gave birth to and abandoned Elena, only to come back into her life unapologetically? Seriously, the only thing that sucked more than Isobel was the fact that she had to hurt so many people along the way.
What ended Jo and Alaric's relationship?
Although being with Jo was probably Alaric's best and happiest relationship in the show, the writers decided that apparently, he didn't deserve to be happy! Anyone else a little angry? Cause we are. Why can't a stand up, respectful, handsome guy like Alaric just catch a break? Much like his relationships with Isobel, his first wife, and Jenna, Elena's aunt, Alaric's relationship with Jo was far from eternal. There's always something around the corner in Mystic Falls to ruin a perfectly good relationship!
What are the names of Alaric and Jo's twins?
This was possibly the saddest story line in the Vampire Diaries ever..and that's saying something. With all the deaths, break ups, and turmoil, it's safe to say this show was never completely happy...but Alaric and Jo's romance made this show really dark. Jo and Alaric barely had time to get married before Jo died (thanks a lot, Kai). As if that wasn't sad enough, she was literally pregnant with twins, who inexplicably survive after being magically transferred to Caroline's stomach. Yeah, no one said it made sense.
What gift did Klaus not give Caroline?
Okay, okay, these two technically didn't date, but it's safe to say that Klaus had a huge thing for Caroline. As tough and mean he was on the outside, our favorite Original vampire still had a soft spot and a heart. Like most of Caroline's suitors, he fell for her outspoken honesty, her loyalty and fiesty attitude. Klaus chased after Caroline even though she was with Tyler for the longest time, trying to woo her with kind words and gifts.
Where did Caroline and Klaus hook up?
As much as Caroline tried to deny Klaus, push him away, and ignore the very obvious sexual tension and chemistry between them, Klaroline did end up happening...kind of. No, Caroline did not cheat on Tyler, but you can bet that he didn't take it well when he found out she had hooked up with the man who had previously treated him like slave. But boy, was the fandom happy about this. It was so overdue, and the scene is forever burned in our minds.
Who does Caroline marry?
It's just so easy to use Caroline's relationships because of how many she has in the show. With that being said, there's only one man Caroline marries and wants to spend her life with...and it would have never happened without a little bit of character development - on both sides. Caroline's beautiful wedding was as short lived as her marriage, because, you know, no one in this show can be happy forever. Unless, maybe, you're Damon and Elena. Then you get a happy ending.
What was special about Mary Louise and Nora?
Ugh, another underrated couple that didn't really get a happy ending. The Vampire Diaries definitely didn't give us enough LGBTQ representation, but Mary Louise and Nora were a start. Although they were kind of evil and definitely made our protagonists' lives harder, they were so cute with each other, and so committed. They also didn't stay evil forever, and ended up dying a sad but romantic death together. Guess it's only fair, given that they had been together for so long.
Who was Stefan with before marrying Caroline?
It was about time that Stefan break away from being obsessed with Katherine and Elena, cause that was getting old. Plus, he deserved a happy love story after being screwed over by his brother and ex-girlfriend. We all know that Stefan's last relationship was Caroline (after A LOT of build up and time) - but this adorable Salvatore did have another relationship before settling down with Caroline. And let's be honest, we all knew this one wouldn't stand a chance.
What was the first doppelganger couple?
It didn't take us very long to find out that Elena was a doppelganger spawned from a whole line of doppelgangers...meaning that her own descendants would eventually yield another doppelganger identical to her. The story goes back a while, but basically, there is a male doppelganger and a female doppelganger line, and every once in a while, doppelgangers come back around and are destined to end up with each other. And all of this started with the first couple's eternal love for each other.
Who does Elena end up with?
This is like, the most important Vampire Diaries relationship question to be asking. The series began with a tense love triangle, and so it's only fair that it be resolved at the end of the series. It's the question we all wanted the answer to from the very beginning - who is end game? Is it Stelena, or Delena? Regardless of what you wanted to see happen, every real The Vampire Diaries fan knows which couple survived the test of time.
