Although it's been years since a new film was last released, the Harry Potter film franchise is and will likely always remain one of the greatest phenomena to have ever graced our movie screens. Based on the best-selling fantasy books by author J.K. Rowling, these films helped shape us and provided us with an incredible story about wizards and witches battling each other in a fight of good versus bad.
The Harry Potter universe is full of plenty of amazing creatures, spells, objects, and of course, people. After all, what would these movies be without the fantastic characters giving us some of the most incredible performances possible? From Slytherins to Hufflepuffs, Ministry workers to members of the Order of the Phoenix, these are the characters who brought to life the amazing wizarding world of Harry Potter. But with so many characters appearing over the span of eight movies, who can possibly remember all of them?
We believe it'll take a true Potterhead could correctly identify all 35 of these Harry Potter characters. Some of them are a bit more dastardly in nature than others, and some aren't even witches or wizards! It's going to take a true Harry Potter expert to name all of them, so now's the chance for anyone who thinks themselves one to truly test their knowledge once and for all!
Who is this Harry Potter character?
As far as Harry Potter characters go, this one is definitely one of the sweetest. She was first introduced to us in the fifth film, Order of the Phoenix, during a fairly awkward carriage ride to the castle with Ron, Hermione, Harry, and Neville. We learn in this same movie that she and Harry have both witnessed the loss of someone’s life, thus giving them the ability to see the horses pulling the carriages. We also learn that this character has a particular interest in some of the stranger creatures found in the Harry Potter universe, like Nargles. She’s sweet, she’s odd, and she’s a passionate member of Dumbledore’s Army.
Who is this Harry Potter character?
This character was introduced to us in the very first Harry Potter movie, The Sorcerer’s Stone. In this film, we learn this character is Harry’s muggle cousin who lives with Harry, as well as with his aunt and uncle. His cousin is perhaps one of the brattiest children in the entire Harry Potter universe and regularly makes it his personal mission to ensure Harry is miserable. Though this spoiled boy continues to torment his cousin well into his teens and taunt him for his misfortunes, he does eventually grow up to have some sort of respect for Harry and his abilities.

This character is the youngest and only female member of the Weasley household. In the very first Harry Potter movie, we see her as a little girl with her mother at King’s Cross station to bid farewell to her brothers as they headed off for school. In the next movie, this girl is finally ready to attend Hogwarts herself, but ultimately became wrapped up in a cursed diary and in Lord Voldemort’s plot to take over Hogwarts. This character is particularly close with Harry and shares in his love for quidditch. For awhile it’s unclear whether these two characters will end up together but in the end, true love finds a way and they live happily ever after together.

This character was first introduced in the fourth Harry Potter movie, in which she competed in the Twiwizard Tournament as the chosen champion from the visiting French school, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Although not especially athletic nor well-versed in spells, this character still made it through the tournament’s various challenges, though sometimes needed some help from her fellow competitors to finish. Although Ron Weasley had a rather big crush on her, this character actually went on to marry one of Ron’s brothers and live happily with him in their cottage far away from the issues surrounding the rest of the wizarding world.

One of the greatest moments in any young witch or wizard’s life is the day they get their acceptance letter from Hogwarts. After this, they must hurry down to Diagon Alley where they can stock up on everything they will be needing for their time at the magical school. In addition to their texts and animal companion, they must also choose a wand. But, this character who owns the wand shop in Diagon Alley, would sooner say that the wands must choose them! This person knows everything there is to know about wands and can accurately describe what a wand is made of, simply by holding it! He definitely picked the right job!

Next to Lord Voldemort, this might one of the most unnerving characters to have ever come out of the Harry Potter series. Our first introduction to her was in the third movie when she escaped from Azkaban and able to rejoin the forces of Voldemort’s followers. She is known as his right-hand woman who happily obliges with his every command and who relishes in torturing whomever she pleases. She is quite the unpleasant woman and is actually a part of Sirius Black’s family tree, though she and Sirius are two very different people. In the final Harry Potter film, she is defeated once and for all by Molly Weasley during the climactic battle at Hogwarts.

This character was present in the very first scene in the very first Harry Potter movie, where she accompanied Albus Dumbledore in delivering a baby Harry Potter to the doorstep of the Dursley’s. Since then, she has proven herself to be an excellent transfiguration professor at Hogwarts and, when needed, an absolutely formidable force. She can be stern at times, and sometimes it seems her face is perhaps permanently set into an unamused scowl. However, she does have her moments of fun, like in the final film when she casts a spell to bring the giant armored statues surrounding Hogwarts to life and excitedly reveals she’s always wanted to use that spell!

In the fourth Harry Potter movie, this character caught the eye of Harry Potter who began pursuing her in the hopes of escorting her to the Yule Ball. However, one of his fellow Triwizard Tournament competitors beat him to it and took her as his date instead. In the next movie, this character joined Dumbledore’s Army and trained alongside Harry to learn the Defense Against the Dark Arts skills they weren’t being taught that year. She and Harry shared a kiss in this film, but their romance ultimately wouldn’t last. We wouldn’t see her again until the final film during the Battle of Hogwarts.

As many already know, there exists a species of creatures in the Harry Potter universe known as elves who are largely enslaved and forced to work as house elves. These creatures serve their masters and dutifully keep the homes they work in clean. They also sometimes work as cooks, much like the ones who cook all the food for the students. This elf in particularly works at the Black house and becomes the house-elf for Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the seventh Harry Potter movie when they briefly stay there. He is not initially very accommodating but he does come to eventually accept and even respect these three teens.

This character was responsible for many of Harry Potter’s biggest moments in his early life. He personally carried Harry as a baby and drove him to his new home at the Dursley’s residence in the very first movie. He also was the one to reveal to an eleven-year-old Harry that he was a wizard and personally delivered his letter from Hogwarts. This character took Harry to Diagon Alley and helped him purchase everything he needed for school while also teaching him about the wizarding world which he knew absolutely nothing about. This character has most certainly been a constant means of guidance for Harry as he has grown up.

This handsome character only appeared in the fourth Harry Potter movie but left a lasting impression on both the characters and on us, the viewers. He and his father joined the Weasley’s and Harry and Hermione to watch a professional quidditch match before school started. He also was the champion chosen from Hogwarts to compete in the Triwizard Tournament – that is, before Harry was also inexplicably chosen and Hogwarts somehow ended up entering two competitors into the tournament. Although he did incredibly well in the first challenges, this character would ultimately find himself in the line of fire between Harry and Voldemort in the final challenge, and unfortunately did not make it out of the competition alive.

This character had absolutely no business being any sort of professor but still somehow ended up as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in the second Harry Potter film. Despite having no teaching background, he found himself recruited the teach the course based solely on his history of magical escapades as depicted in his extensive biographical book series. While he definitely had the approval of the female students, there was no denying he was the wrong guy for the job when the students all realized they were virtually learning nothing. Later, it was revealed that his “adventures” were actually all falsified and this hero was no more than a fraud.

Don’t be fooled by her seemingly grandmotherly appearance – this was one of the most frustrating and anger-inducing characters to have ever come out of the Harry Potter universe. She first appeared in the fifth Harry Potter film as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, but she was different from all the other professors at Hogwarts in that she worked for the Ministry of Magic. As such, she took it upon herself to try and instill all the ideals of the Ministry onto the school and its students. She also taught her class virtually nothing about Defense Against the Dark Arts.

We were first introduced to this dark and uncaring character in the second movie while he and his son, Draco Malfoy, are shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley. He is a ill-tempered and rather domineering man who is revealed to be one of Lord Voldemort’s most trusted followers. As the series progresses and Voldemort’s demands for power begin to take their toll on this character, we see him as more of who he really is – a cowardly man who got his family caught up in the wrong side of this battle. We last see this character abandoning Voldemort at the battle of Hogwarts and hurrying to get his wife and son to safety.

This character is first introduced to us in the fourth Harry Potter movie as a professional quidditch player. The Weasley’s, along with Hermione and Harry, attend the match and cheer for this character who Ron later excitedly calls “an artist.” We then see him reappear at Hogwarts as part of the visiting school, Durmstrang Institute. He was chosen as the competitor from this school to participate in the Triwizard Tournament after his name was pulled from the Goblet of Fire. He also took a liking to Hermione and asked her to the Yule Ball, much to the chagrin of Ron who was no longer his biggest fan.

We first met this character in the very first Harry Potter movie as another one of the brand new students starting their education at Hogwarts. This character has actually appeared to us in several different forms throughout the Harry Potter series. We’ve seen him as a teenager in the second film, where he is a soul trapped inside a diary and manipulates Ginny Weasley into opening the forbidden Chamber of Secrets, but is ultimately defeated by Harry. We also see him as an adult. But in this particular instance we see him as a troubled child who is alone in an orphanage and struggling to understand his strange abilities. That is, until a visit from Albus Dumbledore helps him understand that he is a wizard and he leaves with Dumbledore to attend Hogwarts, ultimately leading him to a life of dark magic.

He showed his students a number of useful spells while keeping the class light and fun. He also proved a good friend to Harry, particularly after a Dementor attack on the train to Hogwarts left Harry shaken. Later, we learn that this character was good friends with Harry’s father when they went to school and he would become one of Harry’s most trusted protectors.

This character was a fellow student at Hogwarts while Harry, Hermione, and Ron all attended school there. He made a lasting impression on his classmates, his professors, and the viewers in the very first Harry Potter movie when he happened to make something inexplicably combust. Since then, that’s sort of been regarded as this character’s speciality, so to speak. In the final movie, as everyone at Hogwarts is preparing for battle against Voldemort’s impending army, Professor McGonagall specifically instructed him to rig the bridge with explosives to stop the intruders from entering. As she explained, this character has “a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics.”

This character first appeared in the sixth Harry Potter film. Dumbledore and Harry paid him a visit at his home and Dumbledore convinced him to come out of retirement and return to Hogwarts to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. Eventually, he agreed, and returned to the school. He was a bit of an odd character but well-meaning, all the same. He had his favourite students who he regularly invited to dinners and parties, including Harry. As it is revealed in the film, he is also the one who inadvertently gave a young Tom Riddle all the information he needed to begin making his horcruxes which allowed him to become invincible as an adult, something which this professor deeply regrets.

This character technically first made his appearance in the fourth Harry Potter film as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, but as we learned at the end of that film, he was actually trapped in a chest while Barty Crouch Jr. posed as him. Later, we see this character in the seventh movie as he is leading a team of Order members to appear as Harry while moving him from his home on Privet Drive. They were all transformed to look like Harry so as to throw off any of Voldemort’s followers who might pursue them, which is exactly what happened. Unfortunately, this character wouldn’t make the trip and ultimately perished in the crossfire.
Who is this Harry Potter character?
This character first appeared in the third Harry Potter movie as a wanted criminal who somehow managed to escape from Azkaban. Harry, who didn’t know anything about this character before learning of his escape, becomes wary of him and believes the criminal is the one who informed Voldemort of his parents’ location so many years before. However, once he finally meets this criminal, he learns that he was actually a dear friend of James Potter’s and would never have done anything to hurt them. He is also Harry’s godfather and takes on this role, becoming his most passionate protector until he perished in the fifth movie.

This character was the professor of Divination at Hogwarts and made her first appearance in the third Harry Potter movie. She is quite an airy and eccentric woman who teaches her students how to read tea leaves and often describes prophecies. She isn’t very respected by the students at Hogwarts, particularly Hermione who believes her subject is useless to them. Later, in the fifth movie, we see this teacher again when the interim headmaster taking over for an absent Dumbledore told her she was both fired and was being kicked off the premises despite Hogwarts being her home. Thankfully, professor McGonagall was there to comfort this poor teacher in her time of need.

As far as the movies are concerned, not very much is known about this fascinating witch. This character was a Metamorphmagus which allowed her to change her physical appearance at her own free will. She demonstrated this ability during dinner one evening in which she turned her mouth into a duck’s bill, much to Ginny Weasley’s delight. As the movie series progressed, she became more prominent as a member of the Order and one of Harry’s protectors. She was also Lupin’s wife and the mother of his child and could be easily spotted in any scene thanks to her unique, albeit constantly changing, hair colour.

We first meet this character at Fleur’s wedding to one of the Weasley brothers in the seventh Harry Potter film. He and his daughter, Luna, are happily dancing quite oddly together and enjoying in the festivities when he catches sight of Harry Potter and seeks a conversation with him. Later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all pay this character a visit to learn more about a mysterious symbol they found in a book after remembering he’d worn a pendant with that same symbol. Clearly distraught, this character stalled the friends with a long story while he awaited the arrival of Voldemort’s followers to take them away. He didn’t mean it maliciously, of course – his daughter, Luna, had been taken and this was the only way he knew to get her back!

This character’s very first appearance wasn’t until the very last Harry Potter film. In this film, Harry seeks help from an eye he sees in a glass shard, taken from the broken remains of the Mirror of Erised. Although operating under the belief he was somehow communicating with Albus Dumbledore, Harry was surprised to find he had actually been seeking the help of Albus’ brother, whom Harry hadn’t even known existed! As it turns out, this brother had been secretly taking care of Harry from afar and even sent Dobby the elf to help Harry in his time of need. Although a gruff, rather emotionless man, it is clear he shares the same desire for universal peace as his late brother.

This character was Harry’s guardian up until Harry decided to leave his home at Privet Drive once and for all. Although he was every bit the doting father to his son, Dudley, as an uncle this character seriously lacked compassion. He treated Harry like a servant and consistently put him down, always reminding him of how “lucky” he was that he wasn’t out on the streets. Throughout the film series, we see this character remain relatively the same without much growth whatsoever. He becomes more wary of Harry’s magical abilities in the later films and starts to hold his tongue a bit more to avoid having Harry’s wand turned on him.

This character first appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as an eager and bright-eyed first year student with a penchant for photography and an unyielding admiration for Harry. Throughout the film, this character consistently pops up to snap a photo of the famous boy who lived, even if it means putting himself into situations where he most certainly does not belong. He also happened to be one of the students who were petrified by the basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets after having viewed the creature from the viewfinder of his camera. Though it landed him in the hospital, he could have sooner perished from witnessing the snake head-on. We’re sure he’s thankful he had his camera with him.

This character’s most prominent appearance was in the sixth Harry Potter film in which she became completely infatuated with a newly popular Ron Weasley. Or, as she preferred to call him, “Won-Won.” Following his success as a Keeper on the Gryffindor quidditch team, Ron found with a brand new love interest who quickly became his girlfriend, much to Hermione’s displeasure. Later, after winding up in the school’s hospital, Ron inadvertently ended his relationship with this character after saying Hermione’s name in his sleep. After that, it was understandably pretty hard for this character to continue dating him.

Although we only got about two movies worth of this character, he definitely made a lasting impression on us. His first appearance came in the very first Harry Potter film where he was shown to be the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. As captain, it was his job to train the newly recruited Harry on everything there is to know about this game, and also provided him with some potentially life saving advice for making it out of the pitch unscathed. In addition to being captain, this character is also a Keeper on the field and assigned Harry to be a Seeker. We do get to see him in the second film, but only briefly.

This character worked for Ministry of Magic but was secretly an undercover agent for the Order and helped them learn everything there was to know about the inner-workings of the ministry, particularly when it was taken over by Voldemort’s followers. He was responsible for delivering the life-saving message to the Weasley wedding in the seventh Harry Potter movie which warned all the guests of an impending attack from Voldemort’s followers, allowing everyone a chance to escape before it was too late. He has also been a trustworthy confidant to all those trying to protect Harry and has proven time and time again that he is definitely one of the good guys!

This character didn’t actually appear until the seventh Harry Potter movie where he was introduced to Harry as one of the Weasley brothers he had yet to meet. He joined other members of the Order to drink Polyjuice potion and disguise themselves as Harry so that if any of Voldemort’s followers decided to pursue them, they wouldn’t be able to tell which Harry was the real one. This Weasley brother also went on to marry the beautiful Fleur Delacour and the two had a wonderful wedding in the seventh movie, as well. They also quite selflessly housed Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Olivander, and the goblin, Griphook.
Who is this Harry Potter character?
This unpleasant looking character was a werewolf who was quite different from the likes of Remus Lupin. Whereas Lupin did his best to nurture his good side while not in wolf form, this character embraced every bit the dark side of his transformation even while he was still human. He is a well-known follower of Voldemort’s and is seen in the seventh Harry Potter movie working with so-called “snatchers” to track down “impure” witches and wizards. He is part of the group who stumble upon Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and who capture them to take to the Malfoy’s manor to await Voldemort’s arrival.

Our first introduction to this character was in the fourth Harry Potter movie, The Goblet of Fire, but we really didn’t meet him until the very end of the film. HE is one of Lord Voldemort’s passionate and loyal followers who disguised himself as a teacher so he could sneak into Hogwarts and ensure Harry was placed into the Triwizard Tournament. It was all a fairly elaborate ruse to result in little success for Voldemort, but this character was still able to successfully feign as a rather grouchy professor for almost an entire year at Hogwarts! Quite the impressive, albeit dastardly, accomplishment.

In the sixth Harry Potter film we met this character, the son of a wealthy and respected family who had bad manners and a cocky air about him. He was a student at Hogwarts the same time as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and took a particular liking to Hermione who he actively began to pursue. In this film, he also goes out to try for the position of Keeper on the Gryffindor quidditch team but due to Ron’s incredible skills (and perhaps a bit of magical intervention from Hermione), the position ultimately went to Ron. We later see this character at one of Slughorn’s parties where he was looking for Hermione who was actively avoiding him at all cost!
