The Walking Dead was something of a gamble when it first started out a few years ago. It was very popular in comic book form among the fanboy community, but who knew that it would win over a mainstream television audience? To be fair, zombie fiction was a tried and tested tradition from the movies of George A. Romero and everyone who ripped him off, but it had never been successfully pulled off as a serialized TV drama before. And yet, The Walking Dead is currently in its eighth season, and it’s one of the highest rated shows on television. For a stint between its third and sixth seasons, TWD was literally the highest rated show on TV – and this isn’t just for cable TV or just for scripted drama or anything like that, it was literally the most viewed series across all of television. Clearly the story of a zombie apocalypse struck a chord with millions of viewers and the gamble paid off. The Walking Dead has legions of fans, many of whom think they might be the biggest. Whose comic book is the show based on?
The Walking Dead is adapted from a beloved series of comic books, although the show occasionally deviates from the comics. For example, that big twist at the end of the season 8 midseason finale was a huge departure from the comic book story, so we’ll have to see what the consequences of that are when the show returns next year.
