The Ultimate Marvel Netflix Quiz

On March 8th 2018, Jessica Jones season two debuted on Netflix all over the world. It was the eighth season of television in the Marvel Netflix universe, which is also comprised of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders and The Punisher. The shows have been a roaring success for the streaming platform, and similarly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their TV version has seen consistent growth in scale and ambition since Daredevil season one started things off in April 2015. While not every show has been a critical darling (with Iron Fist and Defenders being received lukewarmly at best) and people often complain of the 'Netflix bloat' (spreading seasons out with too many filler or slow-paced episodes), the overall quality of the shows is extremely high.

This quiz will test any fan of the gritty Netflix universe, and will include questions that span the entire pantheon of characters and events from all six shows. We've decided not to include any questions relating to Jessica Jones' second season, as it has still only been available for less than a month at the time of this writing. But beware, contained within some of the questions are spoilers for every other show!

So, if you think you know your Wilson Fisk's from your Cornell Stokes', or your Trish Walker's from your Claire Temple's, now is your chance to prove it!

Question 1

Which crime-ridden area of New York City is Daredevil based in?

On April 10th 2015, Daredevil debuted on Netflix as the first of four promised Marvel-related TV shows. Audiences had previously met ol' Hornhead in the much-maligned 2003 Ben Affleck movie, but this new small screen version was a different beast altogether. Playing out like a 13 episode crime drama with some bone-crunching violence, it didn't feel like a superhero show at all. Charlie Cox played blind attorney/costumed crimefighter Matt Murdock, who prowled the rooftops of his crime-ridden New York City neighbourhood in the dead of night...

Question 2

What is the name of Matt and Foggy's legal practice?

Foggy, played by Elden Henson (The Mighty Ducks, The Butterfly Effect), is often the beating heart of the show. Matt Murdock's best friend and partner in their law firm, Foggy is a loveable guy with a good sense of humour, but is by no means a pushover. He's a damn good lawyer, and when he finds out that Matt has been leading a double life as a vigilante, he lets Matt know just how angry he is with him. It changes their friendship entirely.

Question 3

What is the name of Daredevil and Elektra's original martial arts master?

Veteran actor Scott Glenn (The Silence Of The Lambs) plays Matt and Elektra's elderly martial arts master in Daredevil and Defenders. He is depicted as a grumpy, cold and calculating man, and in flashbacks we see that his training methods were hard and brutal. He is blind, like Matt, but has trained his other senses so much that he is deadlier than most sighted men. He thinks that Matt is soft and incapable of doing all that is necessary, as he refuses to kill criminals.

Question 4

What is the name of the villainous ninja cult that first appears in Daredevil?

Even though the mission statement of the Marvel Netflix shows was to show a more street-level, grounded approach to superheroics, fans still expect a lot of bang for their buck. And they certainly get that with these guys, who have been the overarcing villains of Daredevil, Iron Fist and Defenders. A worldwide criminal organization with an army of immortal ninjas, they have been engaged in a battle with The Chaste for centuries, and modern day New York City is their current battleground.

Question 5

Rosario Dawson's character appears in all the shows. What is her name?

One of the things fans love about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the interconnectivity of the movies. While the big characters crossing over is obvious to anyone watching, true fans will get super excited when even minor characters pop up in different settings. In the Netflix TV world, Rosario Dawson's night-shift nurse is the connective tissue, appearing in all the shows except The Punisher. She is there to patch up the heroes when they get injured, and to be an audience-identification character, as she is as surprised by the crazy situations she gets into as we are.

Question 6

Name the woman who had a romantic relationship with Wilson Fisk in Daredevil season 1.

Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as Wilson Fisk was one of the most well-received aspects of Daredevil season one. The veteran actor, well known for roles in Men In Black and Jurassic World, made Fisk both physically and mentally imposing, and affected a clipped speech pattern that was delightfully odd. Throughout the season, Fisk romanced a beautiful art dealer, all while trying to hide the fact that he ran a large criminal empire. When he was exposed and sent to Ryker's Island, she actually vowed to stay with him, although she eventually had to go on the run.

Question 7

Which newspaper did Karen Page begin writing for after leaving Matt & Foggy's practice?

The female lead of Daredevil is Karen Page, played by True Blood actress Deborah Ann Woll. She first met Matt and Foggy when she was falsely accused of murder, and after they managed to get her cleared of all charges (with the help of Matt's costumed nighttime alter-ego), she offered to work as the secretary for their fledgling law firm for free. Unsurprisingly, they accepted! She went on to have something of a romance with Matt, and then a some sort of strange connection with Frank Castle, and also changed her line of work to journalism...

Question 8

Name the investigative reporter who was murdered by Wilson Fisk in Daredevil season 1.

In Daredevil season one, actor Vondie Curtis-Hall (Chicago Hope) played a crusading reporter who was obsessed with exposing organized crime in New York City. His character was very, very familiar with longtime fans of Marvel comics, as he has been a fixture in the books for almost 40 years. So, it was a huge surprise when, after a mere 9 episodes, he was brutally murdered by Wilson Fisk in his own home; strangled to death in a harrowing scene that showed exactly what Fisk was capable of.

Question 9

Who did Elektra want Matt Murdock to kill as a deadly test of his morals?

Audiences who had seen the 2003 Daredevil movie and the 2005 spin-off Elektra, both starring Jennifer Garner, were familiar with the broad strokes of Elektra Natchios' character. An assassin and love interest for Daredevil, they had a dangerous love-hate relationship that often erupted into passion. But in season two of the TV show, we were shown a much more ruthless Elektra; someone who was sexy and fun on the surface, but was also sociopathic, wild and reckless. If Matt was always suppressing his destructive side, Elektra let hers run free.

Question 10

What did Frank Castle give a tied-up Daredevil in order to kill him or mobster Grotto?

Jon Bernthal's searingly intense performance as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil season two was so memorable that he was given his own spin-off series, which wasn't part of Netflix' original plan (although they did harbour hopes of it). In a nod to a tremendous issue of the Punisher comic book by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, the show did an episode in which Frank had Daredevil chained up on a rooftop while they debated their different approaches to crimefighting. Frank felt Daredevil was a half-measure, and criminals needed to be killed, not sent to prison.

Question 11

What is Jessica Jones' Private Investigation business called?

The second Marvel show to hit Netflix was Jessica Jones, which came only six months after Daredevil. It had little to no mainstream name recognition, as she was a completely unknown character to the general public. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos in 2001, Jessica was a former superhero with post-traumatic stress disorder who opened a Private Investigation business. The series was a massive critical and commercial success, with many admiring the way the creators and actress Krysten Ritter dealt with issues such as addiction.

Question 12

William Rawlins, Frank Castle's old commander, was responsible for the deaths of his family. What codename was he known by for much of season 1?

In stark contrast to a character like Jessica Jones, The Punisher was already a household name to the general public. There had already been three previous big screen incarnations of the gun-toting vigilante (with varying degrees of success) before Jon Bernthal suited up in Daredevil season 2, and the character had always maintained a high level of popularity. When his spin-off show debuted in November 2017, it seemed to gain critical acclaim while also making some observers uncomfortable with its brutal violence and abundance of guns. The central plot involved a conspiracy in Frank Castle's old army unit...

Question 13

David Lieberman used which hacker alias in The Punisher?

Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Girls) played David Lieberman in The Punisher season one, a skilled hacker who became Frank Castle's de facto sidekick in their attempt to expose the conspiracy within Frank's army unit. David had faked his death to hide from the National Security Agency, his former employers, and was using his hacker alias to expose the government's secret wrongdoings. He recruited Frank as they had common enemies, and became his tech guy and (sort of) friend, as he searched for a way to safely return home to his family.

Question 14

Name Frank's best friend-turned-bitter enemy whose handsome face is gruesomely mangled in the season one finale.

One of the biggest changes The Punisher TV show made from established comic book canon was with the character of Billy Russo, played brilliantly by Ben Barnes (Westworld). In the show, Billy is Frank's best friend from his days in the marine corps, and in the present day is a successful businessman, running the private military company Anvil. As the season develops, it becomes clear that Billy is actually an amoral villain who was involved in the conspiracy that killed Frank's family, and his face meets a nasty fate between Frank's hands and a glass mirror...

Question 15

What bedtime story rhyme does Frank repeat to himself in Daredevil season 2?

When we first meet Frank Castle in Daredevil season two, he is gruffly repeating some sort of mantra to himself as he prepares to take bloody vengeance on criminals. It transpires that he is repeating a nursery rhyme from his daughter's favourite book, which he read to her every night over the phone while he fought overseas as a marine. When he returned home, she begged him to read it to her but as he was too tired, he said he'd do it the next night. Tragically, his family was killed the very next day.

Question 16

What were Karen Page and Senator Stan Ori debating when Lewis Wilson launched his attack?

"All I know is that we risked our lives and we did terrible things and it meant nothing when we got home." The sad story of Lewis Wilson operated in the background for much of The Punisher season one. Lewis was a young veteran who had an extremely difficult time re-assimilating into civilian life, eventually becoming an unhinged terrorist. He committed several bombings across New York before coming up against Frank Castle. The show's creators described Lewis' story as a tragedy, as he mightn't have lashed out if he had gotten the right kind of help at the right time.

Question 17

In which mystical lost city was Danny Rand trained to become the Iron Fist?

Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage were all fairly grounded and 'realistic' shows (or, at least, as realistic as something can be with a lead character with unbreakable skin). For the fourth show, though, Marvel and Netflix took a bit of a gamble with Iron Fist, a character with a backstory that includes a mystical lost city in which the hero is trained to become a warrior with a fist that glows orange. That he uses to defeat a dragon named Shou-Lao the Undying. Most of this was told to the audience and not shown, though.

Question 18

Name the elderly woman who has been involved in nefarious activities in Daredevil, Iron Fist and Defenders.

Of all the Netflix shows, there are the strongest connections between Daredevil, Iron Fist and Defenders. They are the shows that deal the most with the Hand and their nefarious plans for New York City, and feature lots of ninja action. One of the best (and most mysterious characters) to feature in all three shows is an elderly Asian woman who was first introduced as a criminal running her own heroin trade. Later we would find out she had been alive for many centuries and possessed fighting skills and strength far beyond many would believe!

Question 19

Who delivered the fatal gunshots to Howard Meachum in the Iron Fist season 1 finale?

Iron Fist was easily the least well-received Netflix show upon its release, with many reviews being highly critical of Finn Jones as an actor and Danny Rand as a character. However, for our money, the show has one of the best Marvel Netflix villains in David Wenham's Howard Meachum. The actor, best known for Lord Of The Rings and 300, has great fun playing the ruthless businessman who has been brought back from the dead but been forced to live his (undead) life in hiding. And it's made him go a little nuts!

Question 20

What was the name of Colleen Wing's former sensei, who was revealed to be a villain?

Ramon Rodriguez (Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen) made quite an impression in both Iron Fist and Defenders as Colleen Wing's former sensei. When introduced he seemed benevolent, although there was an air of mystery around him and Danny Rand immediately didn't trust him. Of course, he was right not to, as it was revealed that he was a founding member of The Hand and that Colleen was a member too! Naturally, Colleen sided with Danny when she realised her sensei had lied to her for years and hid his true motivations.

Question 21

What did Colleen Wing turn to in order to make money to keep her dojo open?

If many viewers and critics were highly critical of Finn Jones as Danny Rand, especially in his unconvincing martial arts-based fight scenes, they were largely more fond of Jessica Henwick (Game Of Thrones) as Colleen Wing. Her performance was excellent and she was entirely convincing in her fight scenes. Colleen runs the Chikara Dojo which Danny uses as his base of operations, but her Dojo is struggling for money, so she uses her talents to try and make some cash to keep the place open...

Question 22

What did Luke Cage say after he and Jessica Jones had sex for the first time?

Luke Cage was introduced to Netflix viewers during Jessica Jones season one, thereby priming them for his own solo show which was to follow 10 months later. We met him when he running his own bar, aptly named 'Luke's', and when Jessica saw that he had unbreakable skin and was therefore superpowered like her, they began a passionate relationship. Fans were treated to a superpowered sex scene, which nearly decimated the apartment around Luke and Jessica, and led to him spouting his trademark catchphrase afterwards...

Question 23

What is Luke Cage's real name?

Luke Cage made its bow on Netflix in September 2016 and was met with rapturous praise. The show was the first project set within the MCU that featured a black lead character and directly addressed modern race issues, and was therefore extremely important for representation, and fans loved the neo-blaxsploitation tone and Harlem setting. Audiences were shown Luke's origin story, where we see he was a convict who was experimented on in prison and gained superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. We also found out that Luke Cage wasn't his real name...

Question 24

What is Cornell Stokes' nickname (that he hates)?

Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in 2017 for his performance in Moonlight, which capped off an incredible year for the actor, who had appeared as villain Cornell Stokes a few months earlier in Luke Cage. Stokes was the owner of Harlem's Paradise nightclub and a secret arms dealer who came into conflict with Cage. His nickname, which he despised, was shown to stem from a childhood incident in which several of his teeth were knocked out in a fight...

Question 25

Name the low-level criminal who appears in nearly all the Marvel Netflix shows.

Given that all the Marvel Netflix shows take place on the gritty streets of New York City, it stands to reason that sometimes the same criminals would show up in different situations. Luckily, Marvel Comics has one such low-level lackey who is regularly hung off buildings and interrogated for information by vigilantes, and his TV incarnation has appeared in all the shows except for iron Fist. We've seen him working for Wilson Fisk, selling arms for Diamondback and being kidnapped by The Hand, among other things.

Question 26

Which company made Diamondback's battle suit in Luke Cage season 1?

"I am a snake. I shed my skin for something better. Stronger." The villain of the second half of Luke Cage season one was Diamondback aka Willis Stryker, played by actor Erik LaRay Harvey (Boardwalk Empire). It was revealed that he was Luke's half-brother, who was kept secret by Luke's Preacher father, which he grew up resenting. He gained control of Cornell Stokes' Harlem criminal empire with the help of Stokes' cousin Mariah Dillard, and then engaged in a public showdown with Luke while wearing a battle suit made a tech company we've seen before in the MCU...

Question 27

Why did Wilson Fisk manipulate Frank Castle when they were in prison together?

In Daredevil season two, Marvel did something that simply delighted longtime fans: they put Punisher and Kingpin in prison together and watched the sparks fly! And by sparks we mean blood and broken bodies! It all led to a brutally brilliant scene in which Fisk betrayed Frank Castle, leaving him to fend for himself against a horde of angry criminals...and Frank killed every last one of them. In fact, Frank's display of violence was so impressive that Fisk realised he had a gift for it that he could exploit on the outside...

Question 28

What was the TV show called that Trish Walker starred in as a child?

The adoptive sister and best friend of Jessica Jones, Patricia 'Trish' Walker is a successful radio talk show host and model, as well as a former child star. We find out that she is extremely uncomfortable with this last thing, as her mother Dorothy was responsible for pushing her into fame as a child and was controlling and abusive. It led to her becoming a drug addict at one point, and anytime her (very famous) childhood TV show is mentioned, she avoids talking about it.

Question 29

Kilgrave mind-controlled Jessica and forced her to murder Reva Connors, who she later found out was Luke Cage's...?

One of the central themes of Jessica Jones is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is certainly heavy material for a 'superhero' show. But the Marvel Netflix shows commendably deal in uncomfortable subjects, and in fact PTSD would come around again in The Punisher. Jessica suffered because of a vicious man named Kilgrave (played with genuine malice by former-Doctor Who David Tennant), who used his mind control powers to turn her into his slave for a period, and even forced her to murder a woman...

Question 30

Who did Jeri Hogarth decide to hire to deal with any legal cases involving vigilantes?

Carrie-Anne Moss, best known to genre fans as Trinity in The Matrix trilogy, plays Jeri Hogarth in Jessica Jones (and has also made appearances in Iron Fist, Daredevil and Defenders). She is a take-no-prisoners lawyer and partner in her own firm. She uses Jessica's Private Eye skills on some cases, and eventually becomes embroiled in the hunt for Kilgrave. It leaves her personal and professional life in shambles, however, and at the end of season one she hires someone new; an outside the box thinker who can deal with cases involving vigilantes...

Question 31

Which body part did Misty Knight lose in the final battle at Midland Circle in Defenders?

Misty Knight is a detective in the NYPD, stationed in Harlem. Played by Simone Missick (Wayward Pines), she first comes into contact with Luke Cage while she is investigating Cornell Stokes' Harlem empire. She eventually comes to trust Cage, and was then on the side of the Defenders in their battle against the Hand, which culminated at Midland Circle, a building with a hole beneath it that they had dug to harvest dragon fossils necessary for their Resurrection Elixir. In the midst of the fight, Knight had a body part chopped off...

Question 32

Name the big bad of The Defenders, played by Sigourney Weaver.

When Marvel announced that they had secured legendary actress Sigourney Weaver (the Alien and Ghostbusters franchises) for the role of the main villain in the Defenders, fans were ecstatic. Who would she be playing? In the end, she didn't play anyone recognisable from the comics, which was a bit disappointing. Her character was one of the original five founders of the Hand and was several centuries old, using her long life to amass wealth and forge a power base in New York City.

Question 33

What was Elektra known as when she was resurrected by The Hand?

Elektra, played by Elodie Yung (GI Joe: Retaliation), was one of the most exciting aspects of Daredevil season two. Similarly to her comic book counterpart, however, she died much sooner than anyone expected (in battle with the Hand, instead of impaled by Bullseye like in the comics). She was then placed in a stone chamber by the Hand and exposed to the Resurrection Elixir. A much different Elektra was then used as an instrument of destruction in Defenders, under a codename the Hand used as far back as Daredevil season one..

Question 34

Which member of the Defenders was presumed dead after the Midland Circle building collapsed?

The final battle in the Defenders took place in the caverns beneath the Midland Circle building. As the heroes battled the Hand, their allies Misty Knight, Claire Temple and Colleen Wing were able to set explosives that caused a cave-in beneath the building. The building began to collapse and the heroes made their escape, all except one, who stayed behind to keep Elektra at bay and made one last effort to get through to the brainwashed and tortured woman they once knew...

Question 35

Name Danny Rand's best friend from K'un Lun, who believed Danny had betrayed him by leaving.

Much of Iron Fist season one hints at Danny Rand's past, with the occasional flashback thrown in. But then a mysterious man shows up in New York and we find out he is Danny's best friend from K'un Lun, and a former contender for the mantle of the Iron Fist. He felt betrayed by Danny leaving K'un Lun unprotected, and was jealous of him too. Comics fans in the know would have already known this character would turn to the dark side, though, as he is known as Steel Serpent in the source material!
