The Impossible Disney Quiz!

Walt Disney is not remembered for his first celebrated character Mickey Mouse but for the jump from short series animation to feature length films which paved the way for the animated film industry. When Disney first pitched this idea the question was would audiences pay to see ninety minutes of animation? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the initial motion picture chosen to debut Disney's idea of an animated motion picture. Financially the Disney brothers bet their animation studio on this breakthrough.

And what a success it was! Snow White took the work of hundreds of artists and was the first animated film released in theatres, receiving unprecedented critical success despite many initial doubters. Disney became a well recognized name in Hollywood and Snow White established an animated genre that was followed up with Pinocchio, Bambi, and Dumbo. This gamble was pretty incredible; can you imagine proposing that a film over an hour long would be played by non human characters? Later animation franchises like Pixar and DreamWorks would come to dominate with hits like Shrek, A Bug's Life, and The Prince of Egypt. However, they will never eclipse Disney's characters and they will inevitably be following in his footsteps.

How much Disney do you know?

Question 8

Which of the following did NOT win the Oscar for best original score?

An original soundtrack and score make the Disney experience all-encompassing. However Disney did not originally produce movies with sing-a-long themes. Arguably the early-released Fantasia (1940) was musical but in more of a highbrow (including Bach, Beethoven, Dukas) type of way. After this, the first Disney animated film to incorporate music was The Jungle Book. Presumably due to The Jungle Book's success (and because children love music) many of the following Disney animated films included at least one memorable singing number.

Question 21

Who is Pinocchio's friendly conscience?

Pinocchio is a super old Disney film and if you watched it when you were young you were scared out of your mind.
