Ah, Hogwarts. The magical school that so many of us hoped we would be magically (pun intended) admitted into when we turned the golden age of 11. And the place we still dream and joke about and perhaps even visit (via Universal Studios or the UK) on occasion. But how much about Hogwarts do you REALLY know? Particularly about the names of rooms, places, specific ghosts and events that took place while Harry, Ron and Hermione were in attendance? Think you know it all? Well, take this quiz to find out!
The magic of Hogwarts continues to entrance audiences throughout the entire duration of the Harry Potter saga: from the first moment of Harry’s entrance to the final battle the surprises and quirks of the building has definitely made our own homes and buildings present as less than appealing. I mean, we do not have staircases that move, owl-mail or rooms that appear and disappear within a moments notice. BUT Hogwarts, while truly magical, is also a place of extreme danger - both deliberate and the unknown. However these potential dangers (such as death, trolls being let into the dungeons, or finding out that a giant snake is living in the basement), do not deter many Harry Potter fans - but in fact, fuel their desire to experience this place beyond the movies and books.
How do you find out that you’re going to Hogwarts?
Since Hogwarts is not a conventional school, it seems obvious that students would find out their admittance into Hogwarts, in a completely unconventional way. Audiences of the Harry Potter movies are unaware of this method until Harry himself gets his acceptance letter. In fact, in the movie this is a joyous moment that causes quite a few moments of giggles, as his uncle Vernon is quite adamant that Harry will not be attending Hogwarts. But how do all the letters get to Harry?
Where do you find all the things you’ll need for Hogwarts?
Like any school, Hogwarts has a list of things every student needs to begin their classes. The problem is that you cannot get these items at any of your conventional store, like Staples or WalMart. Instead you have to go to one specific place where all the shops you could ever need are contained. Part of this is because the Wizarding world is still trying to keep their existence under wraps. After Harry is retrieved by Hagrid and on his merry way to Hogwarts, he is introduced to this interesting place, via Hagrid’s friendly and helpful introductions. It is on this particular street that he gets a wand, and books.
How do first years (aka: the first HP movie), get to the castle?
In ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’ Harry and his classmates have a very specific way that they are taken to Hogwarts, aside from the train (where everyone is on). It is interesting to note that in each movie the students get to the castle in a different way. But for this question I am specifically asking how the students get to Hogwarts for THE VERY FIRST TIME. One of the things that I personally love about this scene is that the mode of transportation and thematic music, add a grandiose and awe-inspiring element to the night-illuminated school.
Who is the first ghost Harry meets?
Hogwarts has may awesome, and terrifying, characteristics. One of them being that ghosts inhabit the castle and interact with students regularly. Harry, who is still quite new to this entire arrangement, appears to just sit back and take it all in. In fact, for this particular ghost, it isn’t even Harry that talks to him first. It’s Hermione. But the fact of the matter still remains that this particular ghost is still the first one Harry meets. If you remember correctly - the way he meets this ghost is quite odd - as he (the ghost) literally interrupts their meal.
Why is the third floor forbidden ?
In The Order of the Phoenix, Professor Dumbledore during the opening ceremony, has several instructions for the students: the first years have to note that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students, also Mr. Filch, has asked to remind them that the third floor corridor on the right hand side is out of bounds to everyone who wishes to not die a most painful death (paraphrase). Audiences find out later on WHY this specific part of the third floor is forbidden.
How does the ceiling of Hogwarts change?
The dining hall at Hogwarts is absolutely stunning, and the magical ceiling certainly creates an effect. During their entry into the dining hall, Hermione tells one of her classmates how the ceiling changes its view/mood to match the theme of the meal. While it seems inconsequential at the time (and it still is, to an extent) for this particular question it certainly is not! If you are a fan of Hermione, or can quote this movie off by heart, this is definitely an answer you should be able to get!
Which ghost haunts the girls’ bathroom?
Each ghost within Hogwarts has one “specific” area they are known for. This particular ghost, like Sir Nicholas, becomes a permanent fixture throughout the Harry Potter saga and is known for haunting the first floor girls’ lavatory. From her unabashed flirtations with Harry, to her shrill and eerie screams, this ghost has provided an interesting look into the life of a girl whose untimely death becomes one of the keys to several past experiences at Hogwarts, this ghost proves to be quite helpful to Harry in several of his endeavors.
Why do Harry and Ron keep showing up late to class?
In their first year Ron and Harry don’t get off to the best start with their class schedules (seems to be a recurring theme with these two throughout the rest of the films). In The Order of the Phoenix, Ron and Harry continually show up late, particularly to Professor McGoagall’s class. Audiences’ are able to gather this after McGonagall fools them by transforming from her cat form back into a human and peppering them with questions on why they were late and how she could help them fix this recurring problem.
How do Harry, Ron and Hermione find themselves on the third floor?
As noted in a previous question, Professor Dumbledore had made the third floor, particularly the right-hand corridor of this floor, strictly forbidden to all students. Yet Ron, Harry and Hermione find themselves on this floor anyway. While they are breaking the rules, this accident becomes a catalyst for the rest of the films, as the presence of an interesting creature on this floor causes the trio to realize that all is not as it appears at their beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry.
How do you find the Room of Requirement?
In the later Harry Potter movies the Room of Requirement becomes a key feature for Harry and his friends. It is in this room where Dumbledore's army begins, where they practice magic and where quite a few of the students go to escape some of the less-than-desirable characters of Hogwarts during the final movies of the saga. They were unable to get caught for quite a while because of one key quality about this particular room: specifically how you find and enter it.
To which peice of paraphernalia do you need to say “I solemnly swear I’m up to no good”
The phrase “I solemnly swear that I’m up to no good”, has honestly become a catch-phrase for many Potter fans. It adorns t-shirts, mugs, shoes, bags, etc. While it is infamous (quite a lot of non-die-hard-Potter-fans know it), it is tied to a key magical item that Harry is given by the Weasley twins. While the twins used this item for mischief and to avoid punishment, Harry ends up using it for a bigger purpose: to unravel the question of Voldemort and his parent’s past.
What is the name of the part of the library that is hard to get into?
Like many places of Hogwarts (and a lot of schools, really), there are several places students are forbidden to go into, or have limited access too. In the Order of the Phoenix, on her way home for Christmas, Hermione mentions one of these areas that Ron and Harry might visit while she is away to research the stone. If you think about it, it’s obvious that the information they would need would be there. And even MORE obvious that Hermione (the wonderful, logical minded person she is), would realize the information they needed would be there.
Do the portraits talk?
Many things in Hogwarts act in ways they should not - a lot of these items shouldn’t act at all! One example would be the stair cases. Nowhere in the muggle world do stair cases move on their own, and yet that is the exact reason why Ron, Harry and Hermione end up in the forbidden third floor corridor. If you think about it the entire premise of Hogwarts should probably not exist, so it is not surprising that many features of the castle surprise us. Especially the portraits.
How do you get into the Gryffindor Common Room?
For those who are not 100% sure what this is: common rooms are House-specific rooms that only students from that specific House/dormitory can enter (i.e. Slytherins can only go into the Slytherin common room). Each of these common rooms are attached to the dormitory’s of the students in that particular House, and it is a room where students can mingle, do homework, and socialize. For instance, only Slytherin students can enter that particular common room, and only they know where it is and how to get into it.
How did Harry get onto the Quidditch team?
The Order of the Phoenix is an important movie to watch in the Harry Potter saga for several reasons. The first is that it is the first in the saga, so it obviously sets a lot of groundwork for what is to come, or be expanded/explained, in later movies. Second certain character traits are established within these films: such as Hermione being a bookworm and know-it-all in comparison to her class (think of the first class with Professor Snape), along with Harry becoming a Seeker.
What is the name of the bus that picks you up if you’re stranded?
In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry has finally had enough with the ridiculousness of his life with the Dursley’s, particularly after Uncle Vernon’s rather insulting sister comes for a visit. After a slightly worrisome incident that could get Harry expelled from Hogwarts, he leaves the house frustrated and already packed for going back to school. Stranded and with nowhere to go, Harry walks the streets of his suburb until he is picked up by this bus. This bus, in the Wizarding world, is known for picking up stranded witches and wizards and taking them where they need to go.
What is the name of the three-headed dog?
In the first film (The Philosopher’s Stone), Ron, Harry and Hermione find themselves in a forbidden corridor - and they quickly realize why it's forbidden. Unbeknownst to them, the third floor is the temporary home of a three-headed dog who turns out to be one of Hagrid’s pets. This dog has quite the name … particularly because it doesn’t really fit the dog itself, but would fall under the category of “typical” pet names many would use. Just perhaps not for a three-headed dog.
Where is Hagrid's hut?
Hagrid’s hut is a location near Hogwarts that fans become acquainted with quickly, as Hagrid becomes a friend, mentor and information-giver about Hogwarts to the trio as they get older and things get stranger. This hut is large, to fit Hagrid’s size, and is filled with the love, warmth and simplicity (not in a bad way, but Hagrid IS a simple man), that Hagrid encompasses and represents. It is to this hut that Harry, Ron and Hermione go for information and comfort, whether it be together or separately.
What is the name of the tree that is a huge part of “The Prisoner of Azkaban”?
This particular tree serves a very important purpose as it conceals a secret entrance to the village of Hogsmeade. However, like most things in the wizarding world, this species of tree isn't content to be anything like any muggle would ever encounter. It may be the only tree species to be considered violent and malevolent, meaning it isn't exactly the kind of tree one should ever approach ill-prepared. So, do you remember just what this tree was called? Hint: it is EXTREMELY violent!
How did Harry get into the Chamber of Secrets?
The third movie of Harry Potter is titled the Chamber of Secrets, but this is also a secret room that was built and hidden within Hogwarts. This room was created by Salazar Slytherin, the founder of Slytherin house, and co-founder of Hogwarts. Unlike his three peers, Slytherin felt that only “pure blood” wizards (did not have muggle parentage) should attend the school. He created a room (The Chamber of Secrets) that was rumoured to house a beast that would purge the school of muggle-born witches and wizards and could only be opened by his heir.
What room did Harry find the diadem in?
As a small note: a diadem is like a tiara (which is essentially a super sparkly, like diamond sparkly, crown that female monarchs and members of court were known for wearing). In the final movie, Harry Potter needs the diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, as he realizes that this is one of the Horocruxes (EXTREME WATERED DOWN VERSION: he put part of his soul in it so he could live past his physical body) Voldemort had made for himself and hidden within the castle. In order to find this crucial item Harry enlisted the help of Rowena’s daughter, Helena.
How did the Beauxbatons get to Hogwarts?
In the fourth movie of the Harry Potter saga, titled Goblet of Fire, Hogwarts becomes the host to two other wizarding schools for the TriWizard Tournament: a tournament where representatives from each school (who was over the age of 17) to compete for the cup. The trials these students go through are extremely dangerous and require a lot of thought, planning and problem-solving skills. The Beauxbatons are the all-female wizarding school that enters the cup, and their entrance to Hogwarts is eye-catching for everyone, but especially the men.
How did Durmstrang get to Hogwarts?
The other school to enter the TriWizard Tournament is an all-male school from Northern Europe (Russia area). Unlike the Beauxbatons, who woo the males of Hogwarts with their elegance, grace and overt femininity, the males of Durmstrang are intimidating and their entrance even more so. Amongst these students was one particularly famous Quidditch player, Viktor Krum (who ends up going to the ball with Hermione). The presence of this player within the student body of this school only adds to the intimidation factor.
What is the name of the teacher that taught Harry to fly?
This particular teacher has a rather peripheral role in Harry Potter, and is mainly seen in the first movie. Particularly in the infamous beginner’s flying class where Harry realizes he has the natural ability to fly. It is in this class that Neville breaks his arm after losing control of his broom and Harry and Malfoy have their first disagreement resulting in actions of anger (i.e. they both fly without permission and show a degree of natural skill for it).
What protects the school in the final battle?
While it can be said that the students, teachers and parents are the protectors of the school, Hogwarts does come with its own forms of protection that were built into its very architecture. This particular feature of Hogwarts isn’t seen until the final battle (the final movie of the saga), and does not “activate”, as it were, until Professor McGonagall says the spell. This moment in the movie is quite touching, as it symbolizes the beginning of a battle where lives will be won, the determination of Harry’s supporters - and for many fans - the realization that some of their beloved characters will still die.
