The Frieza Saga Quiz Only DBZ Fanatics Could Pass

Of the many challenges Goku and friends faced throughout the Dragon Ball series, none had quite the impact of Frieza. In many respects, Frieza's influence over Goku's life starts way before fans even had any idea who he was, and the damage he caused naturally grew infinitely more intense once the intergalactic warlord finally made his presence known. Immediately upon arrival, Frieza revealed just how vicious he was, running roughshod over a new planet in search of, what else, the wish granting Dragon Balls it contained. Luckily, Goku and company learned about this plan early enough to do something, yet this was only the beginning (or arguably the middle) of their long rivalry.

In fact, Goku's battle with Frieza is the longest conflict of the whole Dragon Ball universe, and that's just in regards to the first time they square off. For this reason, Dragon Ball Z's Frieza Saga is generally considered a true peak of the series, including many of the defining moments in the lives of both the legendary Saiyan and his many friends. The action that takes place between Frieza and the heroes is actually so integral to Dragon Ball as a whole, it could easily be said one needs to fully understand everything Frieza does to consider themselves a true expert. If that distinction sounds desirable, keeping reading for a quiz on the Frieza Saga that only a Dragon Ball Z fanatic could hope to pass.

Question 1

True or False: Frieza is partially responsible for Goku's arrival on Earth.

All right, so the intro covered the fact that Goku and Frieza have a long history that not even the Saiyan is fully aware of, but how far back can it really go? From the very beginning, fans were aware Goku didn't know much about his own past, not even knowing that he was from a different planet until he reached his mid-20s and his brother Raditz arrived on Earth with the news. Of course, this doesn't explain why he was sent away, or what exactly happened to his home planet after Goku left it. Was Frieza involved all along?

Question 2

Where does the bulk of the Frieza saga take place?

After years of fighting on planet Earth, Goku and his friends get wind of another set of Dragon Balls on a faraway planet, and naturally set forth to find them even if it means traversing the galaxy. For better or worse, Frieza hears about these alternate Dragon Balls at the same time, deciding to take his destructive streak to the source so he can make a big wish of his own. Obviously, Goku can't let that happen, yet this is easier said then done as he starts to understand Frieza and his army's true power.

Question 3

What elite team do the Z Fighters battle before Frieza?

Powerful as Frieza is, few warlords travel alone, and the people on top of an evil empire rarely do the initial dirty work. True to form, Frieza has all sorts of minions and cohorts handling the recon, and they naturally choose to do so in an outrageously destructive manner. After a few low-ranking soldiers repeatedly fail to conquer Namek, Frieza sends in the big guns in his most elite squad...or at least that's his plan. While these fighters are indeed quite strong, they're also total goofballs, and Vegeta makes short work of most of them.

Question 4

Which powerful Namekian first engages Frieza in battle?

In terms of the overall timeline, it's hard to say who Frieza faced as his first true opponent. When it comes to the Frieza Saga specifically, he similarly destroys entire Namekian villages before finding a foe who can genuinely stand against him. Even when a lone Namekian warrior finally stands up for the challenge, it takes Frieza a matter of mere seconds to knock him down. On the plus side, the whole fight was merely a distraction that allowed the heroes to beat Frieza to the punch and summon the planet's Dragon.

Question 5

What is the Namekian Dragon named?

For simplicity's sake, and perhaps out of respect for who and what they are, most characters in the Dragon Ball universe refer to the godlike beings that grant their wishes simply as a given planet's Dragon. That said, both the Earth Dragon and the one on Planet Namek have names, and more importantly, the latter all-powerful being actually needs to hear his name spoken out loud to get summoned. In the Namekian language, the Dragon's name translates to "maker of dreams," but what is it in their native tongue?

Question 6

Who does Guru entrust with the Namekian Dragon's password?

While in some respects requiring a special code word to summon the Namekian Dragon makes the process a tad more complicated than on Earth, it could also be said it's a very necessary security measure. Were it not for this requirement, Frieza would have gotten away with making whatever wish he wanted, unquestionably dooming the entire universe to fall under his power in one way or another. Ensuring this won't happen, only the Namekian Elder Guru knows the code word, and he passes it on to one of his most trusted subjects.

Question 7

Which character does Namek's Dragon revive first?

Having different creators and existing on far away planets, it was likely inevitable that the Namekian Dragon would have some pros and cons in comparison to the one on Earth. On the plus side, unlike Shenron, Porunga is able to revive fallen soldiers as many times as he wants. Unfortunately, he can only do so one person at a time, while Shenron was able to revive thousands of people all at once. For this reason, Gohan and friends need to make a difficult decision in choosing who gets to come back first.

Question 8

What Namekian warrior fuses with Piccolo when he arrives on the planet?

Ultimately, the main reason Piccolo is chosen to get revived first is that his existence will bring back Earth's Dragon Balls, but it definitely doesn't hurt that he's also a solid hand in battle. However, considering he had previously fallen to one of Frieza's weaker foot soldiers in Nappa, his odds of standing against the warlord himself aren't very high. To even things out a bit, the one Namekian born on Earth is quickly convinced to fuse with another member of his species, which greatly increases his power.

Question 9

Who repeatedly heals Krillin and Gohan as they battle Frieza?

Next to Goku, his friend Krillin and son Gohan are easily two of the most powerful people from Earth, but they barely even stand a chance against a menace like Frieza. Even after fusing with Nail, Piccolo is at best equal to his power, and that's before Frieza reveals he's seriously holding back. Luckily, there's another person involved in the fight who happens to have the ability to heal his comrades when Frieza leaves them close to mortally wounded. Of course, once Frieza finds out about this, he also decides the healer is his next target.

Question 10

How many forms does Frieza possess while on Namek?

Right off the bat, it's abundantly clear that Frieza is the most powerful enemy Goku and friends have ever faced, and that's well before they're aware of his full power. It turns out that Frieza actually possesses several forms, each significantly stronger than the last, and the only reason he's holding back is that his true power is so immense it's hard for him to contain. Once push comes to shove, though, it's inevitable that Frieza continually changes his body to slowly reveal his true potential.

Question 11

Who does Vegeta ask to blast him with ki to make himself stronger?

In addition to the natural increase in strength that comes with nonstop fighting and training, Saiyans have an ace up their sleeves in that each time a member of their race suffers defeat in battle, they inevitably grow stronger after being healed. This is how Frieza initially recognizes that Gohan must be a Saiyan, and it's also part of a tactic Vegeta uses to raise his power level to stand a chance against his enemy. Rather than wait for Frieza to beat him so badly he doesn't come back stronger, Vegeta asks a new ally to do the trick.

Question 12

Which character caused Goku to require a Medical Machine during the saga's beginning episodes?

By the time our heroes have no choice but to face Frieza head on, they're severely disadvantaged in the fact Goku just went through a different strenuous battle that left him momentarily out of action. It's not that bad, because one of Frieza's spaceships happens to have a Medical Machine, which rapidly heals and revives anyone in need of a quick fix. Of course, every second counts, so the longer Goku is stuck in that machine, the more likely Gohan, Piccolo, and the others are to fall in battle without his help.

Question 13

Who informs Goku about Frieza's past with Planet Vegeta?

At this point, it should be obvious Frieza was indeed responsible for almost all of the major events in Goku's life. Once the Saiyan's father started to realize Frieza would destroy their home planet, he sent his son away, with the whole "taking over the Earth" thing somewhat secondary to simply protecting him from the warlord. It was a good move for young Goku, as Frieza went through with his plan and eradicated 95% of the Saiyan race mere moments after he left. Of course, Goku has no idea about any of this until someone informs him decades later.

Question 14

True or False: The Frieza Saga is the first time Goku becomes a Super Saiyan.

Long term fans of Dragon Ball are likely so used to Goku and just about his entire family being able to turn Super Saiyan that it could be hard to remember there was actually a significant amount of time when the idea of an intensely powerful being with spiky blonde hair was considered a mere legend. Given how integral Goku is to the series, it's probably a given that he was the first Saiyan of the modern era to reach the form. Did it happen during the battle with Frieza?

Question 15

Where does Goku hide when he realizes Frieza can't read his energy?

For all of Frieza's powers, the warlord nonetheless has a handful of weaknesses that prevent him from being a truly unstoppable force. Perhaps his greatest downfall is the fact that unlike most warriors in Dragon Ball, for whatever reason, Frieza is unable to read and recognize people's energy. This means Frieza needs his opponent to be in his line of sight to actually pose a threat against them, a fact Goku starts using to his advantage once he realizes how helpful it could be. Coincidentally, he picked the same hiding spot Frieza had used earlier in the battle.

Question 16

What happens to Frieza after a Kamehameha that nearly wipes Goku's energy?

From the very beginning of the original Dragon Ball, it could be argued Goku's strongest and most used attack is the Kamehameha he inherits by watching Master Roshi. Goku had used this powerful energy blast countless times before meeting Frieza, so it was no surprise when he reverted to his favorite trick when battling the warlord. However, there was a huge shock in the fact Frieza not only survived, but basically laughed it off, forcing Goku to resort to more desperate measures, like a certain attack King Kai had taught him.

Question 17

Who jumps in front of Frieza's post Spirit Bomb energy attack to save Goku?

After his Kamehameha failed to make an impact, Goku attempted one last huge attack in the form of a Spirit Bomb. Technically speaking, it could be said this was the first time Goku successfully managed to use the attack, his previous attempt against Vegeta having been botched and handed over to Krillin. On top of that, Goku spent a lot more time building this Spirit Bomb, making it significantly larger than his last effort, but it still doesn't work. When Frieza immediately retaliates, someone has to jump in front of the weakened Saiyan to protect him.

Question 18

What character does Frieza eliminate, causing Goku to become a Super Saiyan?

Before Goku and his friends can even get over the shock of his Spirit Bomb failing, not to mention Frieza's attack against Piccolo, the destruction continues when the evil warlord telepathically causes one of his few remaining challengers to float into the air and combust. Typically, this would leave any bystanders absolutely terrified, yet for Goku, it's the final piece of rage required to make Frieza's greatest fear come true. Once Goku experiences that final burst of energy and becomes Super Saiyan, the battle between them can truly begin.

Question 19

Who carries Piccolo to Bulma's spaceship so they can return to Earth?

Terrible as Frieza's post-Spirit Bomb attack against Piccolo was, it takes a whole lot to bring the Namekian warrior down for the second time. While he's seriously injured, Goku's latest savior is still alive, and it's best they keep it that way or else Earth will once again lose its Dragon Balls through his link with Kami. To ensure Piccolo doesn't end up another casualty of Frieza, Goku instructs one of the few other remaining warriors to drag his body back to Bulma's spaceship and return to Earth while he stays on Namek and finishes what they've started.

Question 20

True or False: Goku's Spirit Bomb accidentally destroyed Planet Namek.

Once the battle is down to just Goku and Frieza, it almost feels like the terror is almost over, especially given Goku's newfound strength as a Super Saiyan. Unfortunately, there's a huge time crunch in the situation given the fact Planet Namek itself is starting to fall apart, and there won't be much time left before it disappears from the universe entirely. This is just fine with Frieza, as he doesn't need air to breathe, but Goku would obviously be in dire straights if left floating in space. Was it his own fault this almost happened?

Question 21

What originally caused Guru's early demise?

For all the power the Dragon Balls possess, the person responsible for creating them needs to remain alive in order for them to stay active. On Earth, this originally means Kami needed to live, and on Namek, it meant Grand Elder Guru. Unfortunately, just as Dende and Gohan were making their wishes, all of the Dragon Balls turned to stone, signifying the planet's leader had met his end. There was a slight upside, though, in that the unique circumstances of Guru's demise meant he and the Dragon Balls could be wished back using the Earth versions.

Question 22

How many wishes can Namek's Dragon Balls grant at once?

This quiz already mentioned the main con of the Namekian Dragon Balls in comparison to Earth's, in that they can only revive one person at a time. However, there's also a massive pro to the situation, in that Porunga can grant far more wishes per summoning than Shenron. If the person or people who collected them so choose, each individual wish could revive a fallen ally, or they could wish for several other things that cross their minds. Obviously, this also has potential to be very dangerous if the Dragon Balls fall into the wrong hands.

Question 23

Where does Goku go after escaping the destructing Namek?

Truly proving the two were almost completely evenly matched, it could be said there was no real winner in the fight between Frieza and Goku. While Frieza did end the battle literally in pieces, this downfall was entirely his own fault, having sent out the energy blasts that tore him apart. Likewise, Goku is terribly beaten and battered as Namek finally imploded, only managing to escape by pure chance of finding Captain Ginyu's spaceship and setting it on autopilot. On the plus side, he ends up on a very friendly planet that teaches him an extremely powerful skill.

Question 24

Who does Guru select as his replacement?

In a stroke of sheer luck that only King Kai seemed to understand, Shenron was able to revive Guru on the grounds that Frieza ultimately caused the grief that took his life. However, that didn't change the fact that the Grand Elder was by far the oldest Namekian around, and he's not long for this world after his revival. Recognizing that the surviving Namekian people still need a leader, and more importantly, that he needs to transfer control of the Dragon Balls so they continue to exist past his lifespan, Guru wastes absolutely no time in picking a successor.

Question 25

How many days does it take the Namekian Dragon Balls to reform?

Technically speaking, the Earth and Namekian Dragon Balls have something in common with the fact they both turn to stone and scatter for one year after being used. However, there's a catch in the fact "one year" means something different on the two planets. We all know that Earth's years last 365 days, which is kind of a long time to wait in between wishes. This makes the fact the Namekian year is significantly shorter than ours yet another positive that arguably makes their Dragon Balls the more powerful entities.

Question 26

Which character leaves Earth to search for Goku after learning he's still alive?

Assuming that Goku must have perished either in the fight against Frieza or when Namek imploded, one of the first wishes his friends try making back on Earth is naturally to have him revived. Much to everyone's shock, not only is the Super Saiyan still alive and well, but he's apparently doing something so important that he'd rather stay where he is and return home on his own accord somewhere down the line. Everyone is basically okay with this, simply knowing their friend is safe, but one character decides to seek him out and see what he's doing.

Question 27

With what type of animal does Captain Ginyu accidentally switch bodies?

While Frieza technically survived the destruction of Namek, he's more or less the only member of his army to do so. Nearly the entire Ginyu Force had been wiped out, mostly at the hands of Vegeta, and all other foot soldiers met a similar fate long before the fight truly began. The only real survivor was Captain Ginyu of all people, albeit in a significantly altered state than the one he had during his initial appearances. Using his body swap technique, Ginyu accidentally switched places with an animal, remaining in it's body for a long time to come.

Question 28

Who informed Vegeta the truth about Frieza destroying the Saiyan planet?

In all fairness, this next question could be a bit tricky, as it was eventually retconned to suggest Vegeta knew the truth about Frieza and his planet from the day it happened. At one point, though, just as the Saiyan royal needed to inform Goku what had happened to their people, one of Frieza's own high ranking soldiers spilled the beans and revealed Frieza had lied to him about the callous destruction of his planet and people. To repay him for relaying the depressing information, Vegeta immediately took the soldier's life.

Question 29

For what did Frieza intend to wish from the Dragon Balls?

Good or bad, when presented with the idea of a mystical being that can grant all sorts of powerful wishes, it's basically human nature to try and benefit from the situation. Of course, while good people might want to make some innocuous wishes to make their lives greater, or even to make the world a better place, more evil minds will doubtless use this ability for horrible and destructive things. Unsurprisingly, Frieza is in it for the latter idea, coincidentally hoping to make the exact same wish that Vegeta desperately wanted.

Question 30

What is the third wish asked of Porunga?

While it was great news to learn Porunga could grant three wishes at a time, when he was first summoned, Dende and Gohan only got out two of them before he disappeared with Guru's demise. Wish number one was for Piccolo to be revived, followed by having the Namekian warrior teleported to his home planet where he could face Frieza. Several days later, Guru was revived, and they could finally make their third of what would eventually become many subsequent wishes. In some respects, it was the most important wish of all given the long term consequences.

Question 31

Where does Goku bite Frieza?

The simple fact Goku has a pure heart and fights for the good of mankind doesn't necessarily mean he's above playing dirty. Especially against a foe like Frieza, sometimes the best method around is fighting fire with fire, and Goku definitely bends the rules of morality a handful of times while doing so. Specifically, when it looks like there's no other way out of a certain situation, Goku resorts to biting his opponent in comedic fashion. In fact, he's done this quite a few times to other enemies, as well.

Question 32

Who finds Frieza's body floating in space?

Exactly as he boasted to Goku that he would, Frieza manages to survive both their battle and the inevitable destruction of Namek, even after causing himself to fall into pieces. It's not like he's exactly thriving in the situation, though, forced to aimlessly float around space in deeply weakened form until someone comes along and finds him. Unfortunately, it's a powerful ally that does so, and taking a page out of the Six Million Dollar Man's book, they rebuild Frieza to make him better, stronger, and faster after the discovery.

Question 33

What is Frieza's brother named?

From a technical standpoint, neither Frieza's brother nor anyone else in his equally destructive family make an appearance during the Frieza Saga proper, but it should go without saying they all played a huge role in his life. His brother in particular undergoes the typical sibling rivalry one might expect from violent warlords, both trying to conquer as many planets as possible. Once Frieza's brother learns his sibling was defeated, he also decides to try his hand at facing the man who beat him.

Question 34

Which character finally puts an end to Frieza and his father?

Despite a popular misconception in the Dragon Ball galaxy, Goku wasn't ultimately responsible for Frieza's demise, as other questions on this quiz should have made clear. Instead, it's a mysterious fellow Super Saiyan claiming to hail from the future that does the deed, appearing out of thin air with a sword he uses to quickly tear apart the now mechanical Frieza. Not even the fact King Cold is at his son's side does anything to stop this young man, as he easily takes care of the older warlord, as well.

Question 35

Who helps Goku re-detain Frieza when he causes problems in Hell?

Even after his demise, Frieza and company continue making all sorts of problems for Goku and his friends, albeit now, they're resigned to doing so from the afterlife. That's not to say he can't still cause a significant ruckus, refusing to buck to authority in his newfound Hellish environment and running roughshod over the souls he meets there, good and bad. Initially, Goku assumes he's going to have to go down below and take care of things, only to discover another Heavenly protector was more than capable of doing the trick.

Question 36

Who revives Frieza in Dragon Ball Super?

Okay, so the Frieza Saga was long over by the time the warlord was revived in Dragon Ball Super, but his reemergence on Earth was the start of an entirely new battle, labeled the Golden Frieza Saga. As it would turn out, the far away remnants of Frieza's army haven't been doing so hot since his demise, so they decide to seek out the Dragon Balls themselves and revive their evil master. Technically, it's a bit of a group effort, with every high ranking soldier left doing their part in bringing him back, yet someone is clearly in charge.

Question 37

What other villain helps Frieza's men revive him?

Typically, the bad guys in the Dragon Ball universe are willing to begrudgingly work together, if only to phase out their biggest threats before going rogue and enacting their individual plans. That's not quite what happens when Frieza's men find another team of villains carrying the Dragon Balls, more or less intimidating them into giving up their prized possessions so Sorbet and his team can make a wish of their own. Not that they had much of a choice in the matter, having recently turned into children due to another wish gone wrong.

Question 38

Who are the only two characters Frieza's father tells him never to fight?

Even a vicious warlord like Frieza has his limits, and the surprising thing is he's willing to acknowledge and accept them. Fearless as he is against Goku and all of his friends, there are actually at least two beings in the known universe King Cold warned Frieza against, and it would appear he actually took the advice by avoiding them. One of these creatures never actually crossed paths with Frieza, making that one pretty easy, while the other was simply so powerful Frieza immediately knew he'd never stand a chance against him.

Question 39

Who uses a Temporal Do-Over to reverse time after Frieza destroys Earth?

Now that Frieza has achieved a super powered shiny new form, he's stronger than ever before, and may actually succeed in his goal of conquering Goku and his friends. Barring that, he at least has the power to destroy the Earth, which would in turn leave Goku and the others with nothing left to fight for, or so he thought. Luckily, in between the two battles with Frieza, the original Super Saiyan made a few new allies, including a God of Destruction and his attendant, who had the power to create a "Temporal Do-Over" after Frieza's desperation attack.

Question 40

Who warns the Earthlings that Frieza has been revived?

While Goku and his allies never stop training for the next big threat, the last thing any of them ever expect is for a villain they already defeated to come back and start the battle all over again. With how much time had transpired between the first and second battle with Frieza, they may well have even forgotten about the warlord, at least in terms of being a current threat. That all immediately changes when an old ally of Bulma's in the Galactic Patrol happens to stumble upon Frieza's army after they wish him back to life.
