The movies of the 1990s really took the concept of "blockbusters" to the next level. While the 1980s were a hard act to follow - and while they probably edge out the 90s in terms of how memorable, recognizable and quintessentially unique to their era the movies were - the 90s took special effects, action and cost to new and astronomical levels.
