It's hard to believe that season one of Grey's Anatomy aired more than 10 years ago, all the way back in 2005! Currently this famous medical drama, which stars a large cast of talented actors such as Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers and Kate Walsh, is on its 15th season.
As most people are without doubt well aware, Grey's Anatomy takes place in a hospital setting and focuses not only on the show's protagonist Meredith Grey but also on a number of other characters. Some of these other characters are interns, some of them are residents and still others are attending physicians. Of course, patients and love interests also get plenty of screen time too.
When most of us think of hospitals we think of incredibly serious and solemn places that are full of sad patients and busy doctors. However, this series has showed us a more human side to those who have decided to go down the medical route.
Let's be honest - through showing us the behind the scenes of a hospital (even a fictional one) the show has inspired many of us to consider pursuing medicine. But would medicine really suit us? That might depend on our sign!
Who is this?
Every true fan of Grey’s Anatomy should be able to name this particular character! This character first made an appearance in season six of the series. Before she married her husband Matthew and retired to look after the homeless she worked as an Attending Trauma Surgeon. She was a great doctor even if she did find it incredibly hard to pass her board exams (she wasn't successful in her first try) and even if she did once endanger the life of one of her patients. As most are probably well aware, this character is very religious and used to often pray for her patients. She was once married to the Head of Plastic Surgery, Jackson Avery.

We were first introduced to Jo Wilson – now Jo Karev – in season nine of Grey’s Anatomy which is when she started her internship at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. We were quick to learn that Jo had a rather difficult childhood. She was abandoned by her mother when she was just a baby and spent her childhood between foster families. Eventually she began living out of her car but despite her dire situation she managed to complete medical school. At Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital she quickly fell for her mentor, Alex Karev, and eventually the two got married. Of course, there was plenty of drama in between. For example, it turned out that Jo Wilson wasn’t actually Jo’s real name.

George O’Malley was one of the original interns of the series. Indeed, we first met him all the way back in season one of the show. George was at one point married to Callie Torres but their marriage did not work out. As some might be well able to recall, George had a huge crush on one of his colleagues and fellow doctors. Who can remember the name of that colleague? Was it Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, Meredith Grey or Arizona Robbins?

This is a tough one. Most of us love – or loved – both Maggie Pierce and Lexie Grey. Both Maggie and Lexie were biological half-sisters of Meredith Grey. Lexie was the daughter of Susan and Thatcher Grey whereas Maggie was the daughter of Ellis Grey and Richard Webber (but her adoptive parents were Diane Pierce and Bill Pierce). As such, we were all incredibly upset when she left Seattle, and in consequence the series, at the end of season six. Izzie was probably one of the most optimistic characters on the show. She firmly believed that there is good in most people, even Alex Karev who made fun of her for working a particular job to pay off her college debts.

Derek was a talented doctor and a charismatic man. As such, it is not at all surprising that countless of interns and residents were head over heels in love with him. This character might have been an incredibly ambitious and hardworking doctor (she won the Harper Avery Award not once but twice throughout the course of her professional life) but she was not exactly a nice person. Indeed, none of us really liked her for she was somewhat mean and selfish not to mention self-absorbed. Her personal life wasn’t exactly happy – she was in love with a man who was jealous of her professional success. She ended up falling pregnant with his child but then later gave the baby away for adoption. Towards the end of her life this character was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Andrew DeLuca is one of those characters whom we met later on in the series. Indeed, we were not introduced to him until season 11 of the show. As most fans are probably well aware, Andrew is actually Italian but he moved to the U.S. with his mother when he was only a child. After Andrew graduated high school he worked in EMT which is where he was inspired to attend medical school. He currently works as a Surgical Resident at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Andrew is an easygoing person and is well liked by most people. However, his good nature sometimes lands him in trouble. For example, who can forget that time he helped his colleague and friend get back home after a night out only to be beaten up by her jealous boyfriend?

At a very basic level, your scrub color represents the department that you work in as well as your rank within that department. Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has a standardized set of scrubs. For example, surgical interns as well as residents wear light blue scrubs whereas surgical fellows wear navy scrubs. Nursing staff can usually be seen wearing green scrubs whereas ER residents wear brown scrubs. The standard scrub caps are either light blue or navy blue although some residents choose to personalize them. For example, Owen Hunt wears a military themed scrub cap. What is the name of Meredith Grey’s and Derek Shepherd’s first child?
When Meredith and Derek finally got together, most fans were ecstatic. They were a gorgeous couple but of course their happiness was not meant to last. As most fans are well aware, Derek passed away in season 13 of the show, leaving Meredith with three little children. As most fans are probably well aware, one of their kids is not actually theirs, at least not biologically speaking. She came to Seattle from Malawi along with a number of other kids to get surgery. Most doctors know not to fall in love with their patients, no matter how charming, good-looking and just plain adorable they might be. After the plane crash in season eight of the series, Cristina decided to relocate to Minnesota. There she started working at Mayo Clinic where she was mentored by a much older doctor. Initially Cristina disliked her mentor, thinking him much too slow and old-fashioned and his stories boring. Nonetheless, with time her mentor impressed her with his surgical skills and the two became good friends. Cristina’s mentor told her to not let anything stand in the way of her professional life for it was clear to him that she was destined for great things in life and that she was obviously one of the best doctors of her generation. Callie Torres or Arizona Robbins as a work bestie?
Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins frequently make it to “best Grey’s Anatomy characters” lists, and for good reason. They are both talented doctors but perhaps more importantly they are both friendly and easy-going. Callie and Arizona not only dated but were actually once married. Indeed, they have one child together. Callie has since moved to New York – without her child for Arizona got sole custody – but Arizona has recently resigned from her position as Head of Fetal Surgery so as to be closer to the woman she once considered as her soulmate.
Why did Owen Hunt fire Teddy Altman?
When we first met Teddy Altman in season 6 of the show it was quickly revealed to us that she and Owen Hunt had a history. Indeed, it turned out that they both once worked in the army and that they both once had feelings for one another. As it turned out, these feelings were still there although Owen was now head over heels in love with Cristina. As such, the relationship between Teddy and Owen was complicated to say the least. In the end, Owen ended up firing Teddy from her job. Who can remember why he did so?
Richard Webber or Miranda Bailey as Chief of Surgery?
What do Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey have in common? They were both Chief of Surgery at one point or another during the show. Richard Webber was the Chief of Surgery at the start of the series. He later lost his position due to drinking problems and later still he resigned as Chief of Surgery so as to take the fall for Meredith who tampered with his wife’s Alzheimer’s trial. Miranda Bailey was appointed as the Chief of Surgery in season 12 of the series. She made a great Chief but has since gone on a sabbatical in order to restore her health.
What was the name of the patient that Izzie fell in love with?
Falling in love with one’s patients is obviously not a good idea but then again, the heart wants what it wants, right? Izzie certainly learned that the above statement was true when she fell for one of her patients. Who can remember his name? He first came to the hospital due to heart problems which is when he met Izzie. But even though his condition was pretty bad he simply could not get a heart transplant. This prompted Izzie to cut his LVAD wire. Unfortunately, even the new heart could not save his life – he ended up having a stroke and passed away, leaving Izzie all alone.

Remember when Seattle Grace Hospital merged with Mercy West Medical Centre as a result of the difficult economic climate? The merger caused quite a commotion and resulted in a number of people being let go from their positions. The merger also meant that Seattle Grace Hospital doctors had to learn how to work alongside doctors from Mercy West Medical Centre. Mergers are never pleasant and more often than not people’s first reaction is to resign. What about you, would you accept a merger or would you resign?
Before Norman Shales became a surgical intern he was a…?
We’ve already mentioned just how difficult it is to find your true passion in life. Most of us search for purpose for most of our lives and if we’re lucky, we find it sooner than later. But sometimes we only figure out what we really want to do when we are rather old. Take Norman Shales as an example. He joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 4 of the show which is when he became a surgical intern. Due to his age most people assumed that he was a doctor and he was eventually nicknamed “the world’s oldest intern”. Eventually Norman had a stroke which prompted him to admit to himself that he actually wanted to become a psychiatrist, not a surgeon. But who can remember what it was that Norman did before he decided to become a doctor?
Successful professional life or love?
As most people are probably well aware, back in the day most women were discouraged from working and from pursuing professional happiness. We have come a long way since then but even still, most women cut back on their hours or quit working altogether when they give birth. With this in mind it becomes easier to relate to strong female characters on Grey’s Anatomy such as Cristina Yang who always put her professional life above love, knowing full well what marriage would entail.

Meredith Grey is the protagonist of the series and as is only natural, most of us can’t imagine the show without her. At the start of Grey’s Anatomy she worked as a surgical intern but quickly advanced in her professional life. She is currently the Head of General Surgery but she was also once an Attending General Surgeon. She wasn’t exactly the nicest person one could encounter in the hospital – she was rather tough and had a no-nonsense attitude – but one can’t say that she wasn’t fair. The hospital is a serious place. It is a place where sick people are treated and a place where patients are given hope. But of course that doesn’t mean that doctors can’t have fun once in a little while even if they do appear to be incredibly serious and somber from the outside. Sometimes patients are the ones who enable doctors to get in touch with their fun side. Remember the time when a little boy named Pablo encouraged Alex to prank Jason? Alex sent Jason on a wild goose chase trying to figure out who paged him and then later sent him a memo saying that the Chief of Surgery, Miranda Bailey, needed his urine sample.

Most fans will without doubt agree that Cristina is – or rather, was – hands down the best character in the entire series. Cristina was a talented doctor who put her professional life above else. For a long time, Cristina was involved with Preston and the two had a rather tumultuous relationship. Of course, it did not help that the two had very little in common, that Cristina found it hard to accept Preston’s spirituality and that Preston had issues with her inability to give up her freedom. Doctors have to follow numerous procedures which make the process of saving lives much more complicated than it might appear at a glance. For example, if a person needs a new heart he or she will have to go on a waiting list unless his or her life is in serious danger. Every doctor on Grey’s Anatomy dreams of winning The Harper Avery Award. It is one of the most prestigious awards out there and of course, it is also nice how it is accompanied by half a million dollars! The Harper Avery Award was created by Jackson Avery’s grandfather, Harper Avery. The intent behind the award is to make top surgeons work even harder in their chosen field. Every year, five doctors are nominated for the prestigious award but of course, only one of them wins it.
