Take The 60 Second Test To Find Out Which Way Your Kid Swings

Luckily, we live in a time where sexual equality is becoming more commonplace thanks largely to the prevalence of gay characters on TV and in movies, along with the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in all of the United States. Of course, there will always be a certain percentage of the population that will deem homosexuality as wrong, but by and large, the world has been moving in the right direction when it comes to stopping discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

However, even if you line up on the right side of issues, the idea of having a kid that might end up being gay can still be an intimidating thought for parents that grew up in a different generation. Talking about relationships, puberty, and sex with your kids can already be awkward enough, and throwing homosexuality into the mix is enough to make you avoid having “the talk” altogether.

If your child is still in their adolescences, there’s a good chance that they’ll keep their sexual orientation from you at first. After all, discovering that you’re gay while trying to navigate middle and high school can be enough of a challenge already without bringing your parents into the mix.

But if you’re still curious to know which way your kids are leaning, there are still some tell-tale signs that you can look for. So let’s see if your kid is gay or straight.

Question 1

What was their favorite toy growing up?

If your son couldn’t help but grab for those Barbie dolls, or if your daughter was more interested in wrestling than playing dress up, this is often the point where parents begin to wonder if their child might be gay. While most children won’t be sure of their sexual orientation until after puberty has run its course, there are certainly those who show signs of being gay long before they’re ever interested in the same sex.

Question 2

What is their favorite sport?

While most teenagers enjoy partaking in a school sport, others could not care less about those kinds of athletic activities. So where does your child land? Did they used to or are they still presently partaking in sports from one season to the next? Or did they skip out entirely? And there’s always the possibility that they like to just kick back on the couch and catch the games on TV.

Question 3

Most of their friends are of the opposite sex.

While it’s a bit of a stereotype that gay men exclusively hang out with women, while gay women are able to better hang with the guys, it is true that straight men and women can have more trouble trying to maintain a purely platonic relationship… especially while growing up. What more often happens is one person will have feelings for the other that aren’t returned — which can only spell trouble.

Question 4

What is their favorite Netflix original show?

Much like HBO and AMC, Netflix is now turning out some of the best TV series available. Even though people may tune into the online streaming service to watch movies they skipped at the theaters, it’s only a matter of time before you or your child start binge-watching a Netflix original show. So what does your kid watch?

Question 5

What musician do they listen to the most?

Since it would be odd for any child — gay or straight — to openly discuss their sexual endeavors with their parents, one of the best things you can do is look at your child’s interests. While it may be easy for your kid to keep their romantic life hidden away from you, it’s impossible for them to hide what kind of shows they watch, books they read, and music they listen to.

Question 6

How long does it take them to get ready in the morning?

Whether you brush your teeth in the show, before you eat, or after you’ve had breakfast, we can safely say that everyone’s morning routine is wildly different. This especially includes the amount of time that people need to get ready for the day. While some kids only need to spring out of bed and throw on a clean (or dirty) shirt, otherwise will be clogging up the bathroom with the amount of time they spend primping and preening themselves.

Question 7

How many people in your close and extended family are gay?

Those people out their that still think being gay is a choice clearly don’t care about the science behind things. While both nature and nurture will certainly play a role in the identity of anyone, there have been numerous studies and loads of research that have pointed at genetics as a major deciding factor for an individual’s sexual orientation. So being gay could very well run in your family.

Question 8

Throughout school, your daughter wanted to play sports or your son was interested in the arts.

Just because it’s a cliche doesn’t mean it’s not true. After all, stereotypes had to come from someone. But just because you’re son was interested in drama doesn’t mean he’s definitely gay, it’s just one factor amongst thousands. Luckily, in today’s society parents aren’t as strict about their kids adhering to gender roles.

Question 9

After they graduated, they couldn’t wait…

While high school can be a nightmare to anyone who doesn’t adhere to what’s “normal” or “popular,” life after high school is far more forgiving to those that are different. In fact, kids that don’t exactly love high school will often go on to be far more successful and driven than the prom queen or the football MVP, specifically because they learned not to get too comfortable early on.

Question 10

They never talk about their relationships.

During a large chunk of you child’s life, you can expect them to want to keep their relationships secret. But once middle and high school have gone and past, it’s more natural for them to discuss their relationships and plans for the future, including marriage and kids. But if your child continues to keep their significant others hidden away, there’s a definite possibility that they want to keep something secret.

Question 11

What kind of footwear do they wear the most?

Can you really tell if your kid is gay simply from their footwear? Well unless they’re wearing a pair of rainbow-colored shoes, then the answer is no. But once again, how they dress is just one piece of a complex puzzle that helps define their personality. So what does your kid prefer to put on their feet?

Question 12

What was their favorite after school activity?

While every middle and high school student is pretty much stuck to doing the same thing as everyone else in periods one through eight (or however many your kid’s school has), it’s after school that your kid can largely let their true colors shine… provided that they haven’t been given detention that day. So what does your kid like to after the school day ends?

Question 13

What’s their favorite brand?

Nike decade sneakers

For the most part, teenagers aren’t very socially conscious — and instead of buying brands from companies that treat their workers and the environment with respect, kids usually just end up buying whatever’s currently popular or they feel most comfortable in. But there are definitely brands more popular amongst gay men and women.

Question 14

How many pets do they have?

While it used to be considered taboo to let a gay couple adopt a child, fortunately, restrictions are beginning to loosen up as far as this is concerned. But because the process towards having a child can take much longer for gay couples, they often resort to raising a pet or two with their partner in the meantime.

Question 15

What are they usually doing on a Friday night?

Whether your kid still attends school or is already a member of the workforce, Friday night is their time to cut loose and forget about the week they’ve just had to drag themselves through. So what does your child do to unwind? Relax at home? Hang with friends? Or keep their social life totally hidden away from you?

Question 16

What’s their favorite reality show?

With so many great fictional shows available today, including Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and The Walking Dead, we hope your child isn’t solely consuming reality TV. But then again, everyone needs to turn off their brain at some point during the week and relax with some guilty pleasure television. So which show does your child prefer?

Question 17

When David Bowie passed away, they…

It may just be a generational thing, but the music kids are listening to today seems exceptionally bad. Hopefully, you were able to instill a good taste for music with your children without them pushing back on your generations musical taste too hard. For older generations, losing David Bowie was definitely a heartbreaker, but how did you kid react?

Question 18

How would you describe your relationship with them?

One day your kid is your best friend, and the next day they hate your guts. This is the unfortunate period of your child becoming a teenager, and it’s something that all parents will have to go through. While a few rocky years are expected, hopefully, your relationships with your child was strong before and after these tumultuous few years that revolve around puberty and popularity contests.

Question 19

What’s their favorite sitcom?

Someone’s sense of humor is just as personal as their sexual preference. And while plenty of sitcoms are beloved by almost everyone, there are others that you’ll either love or hate. Therefore, we’ve picked some of the more divisive sitcoms that have ever debuted. So do you know which one makes your kid laugh the most?

Question 20

They’ve attended their fair share of plays and musicals.

While everyone should have a healthy appreciation for the arts, the fact remains that some (straight) people just can’t stand sitting through plays or musicals. Even though a stage play is ostensibly the same as watching a movie, there’s just something about a real person breaking into a show tune in front of you that makes some people extremely uncomfortable.

Question 21

How many same sex “friends” have they brought over during the holidays?

This is a tell-tale sign that your kid may very well be gay, and if they’ve brought over the same “friend” one Thanksgiving after the next and you’re still taking this quiz, we’re afraid that you’re experiencing some deep denial about your child’s life choices. While the average person may indeed bring over their best friend to make boring family events more bearable, you should start to pick up the hint if this is a recurring event.

Question 22

Throughout middle and high school, they never had a set friend group.

Middle and high school are already hard enough for the average kid. Now just imagine throwing homosexuality into the mix and things are bound to get a lot more complicated. Being confused about your own sexuality can be a nightmare for a teenager, which could, unfortunately, lead to your kid bouncing from one friend group to the next as they come to terms with their own identity amidst an often hostile social setting.

Question 23

They own at least one acoustic guitar?

While most kids will dream of becoming a guitar hero or a pop singer at one point in their life, they will usually be more drawn to the idea of fame than that of self-expression through music. Then there are others who will find comfort in playing the guitar while singing a song, even if it’s only for a few friends around a late-night bonfire.

Question 24

What did they want to be growing up?

Inevitably, kids cycle through about two dozen “future careers” when they’re kids. And while you shouldn’t take them 100% seriously every time they declare that they’re going to be the next President of the United States, what they dream about being can definitely shed a light on what they’re starting to become interested in.

Question 25

What do you argue about the most?

If you’re a lucky parent, then you’ll only have to suffer through arguing with your child during their teenage years. But for many parents, the arguing will start when they’re toddlers and continue through adulthood. Hopefully, these disagreements won’t but too much strain on your relationship, and you can use the difference of opinion to each expand your horizons.
