We at TheQuiz aren’t doctors, but we’ve seen a bunch of them on TV. Believe it or not, the first televised medical drama, City Hospital, wasn’t particularly successful, but the emergence of future series including Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey were so outrageously popular that doctors remain amongst the most prolifically studied professions on the small screen.
While all doctors real and fictional dedicate their existence to saving lives and healing the sick, they nonetheless all have wildly different personalities and inner characters, as the many doctors on television have proven. There’s definitely something altruistic and noble about the medical profession, meaning most people who enter it are generally pretty decent, upstanding folk, but this isn’t always the case. Some are mean jerks who just like experimenting on the human body, and others are in it entirely for the money.
Chances are most people browsing our web site aren’t actually doctors, and if you are, hopefully you’re at least on your lunch break, because you’ve got real lives to save. The rest of us can just fantasize about the idea through the lens of our favorite fictional doctors, imagining what it might be like to spend a few hours helping them out at their hospitals. If that sounds like fun to you, why not save a fictional life or two by taking our quiz and finding out which classic TV doctor you have the most in common with.
What’s your specialty?
Considering how hard it is to be a doctor, most professionals in the industry specialize in a highly specialize aspect of it. Obviously, every doctor shares the same base knowledge of the human body. If you could only practice one kind of medicine, though, what would it be?
Who would you prefer operate on you?
Unfortunately, being a doctor hardly makes one immune to disease and injury themselves. In fact, being a doctor on TV means that dramatic irony will inevitably bring you under the operating table yourself when the show needs a boost in ratings. Who would you want performing your life saving surgery?
Why did you become a doctor?
Whatever the reason a person enters the field of medicine, they deserve to be commended for it. Appropriately, doctors are amongst the most respected people in the work force, yet prestige alone usually isn’t the reason people decide to save lives. What do you think the best reason is?
What type of music do you like?
Regardless of how little free time doctors may or may not have, there’s nothing stopping them from busting a groove for three to five minutes when their favorite song hits over the hospital PA system. What type of music might make you drop the scalpel to get down and get funky?
Are you good with patients?
Next to basic knowledge of medicine, one of the most important skills a doctor can have is something they call “bedside manner.” Being able to make patients at ease during their darkest hours can at times do more than medicine ever could. Can you provide this calming relief?
Do you drink alcohol?
Okay, so not every doctor is going to speak positively about the joy of alcohol. However, drinking after work is perfectly legal, and as long as it’s done responsibly, it isn’t all too dangerous to one’s health. That in mind, have you ever taken the edge off with a stiff drink?
Have you ever done hard drugs?
Okay, so drinking alcohol is legal, and if done in moderation, it’s not all that harmful to the human body. On the other hand, hard drugs like heroin or cocaine can be extremely damaging after even one single use. Hopefully, doctors would be able to avoid this risk. Have you?
How is your love life?
In the real world, doctors may find themselves without the time to search for love. However, when a character appears on television, they’ll inevitably find romance whether they’re looking for it or not. Have you been so lucky in real life, or does work get in the way of romance?
Do your coworkers like you?
No matter what a person does for work, it’s important they get along with the people around them. Doctors especially should try their hardest to work in unison with their fellow medical professionals, as lives could get lost if an argument strikes at the wrong time. Is that a danger for you?
What’s your favorite movie genre?
By the time they start working at a hospital, few doctors have the time to sit down a watch a long movie with the family. Of course, this doesn’t mean they couldn’t watch a few flicks in med school or earlier in life. What did you watch in your free time?
How did you do in school?
Getting into med school isn’t easy, so we hope that any real life doctors taking this quiz answer this question positively. That said, it’s entirely possible a person failed out of high school only to turn their life around and suddenly start saving lives. Is that what you did?
How strong is your work ethic?
For the most part, doctors never have a second to spare when they’re actively on duty. There are always sick, hurt, and otherwise ailed patients needing their help. What this means is there’s really no room for slacking off once they put on their scrubs. Could you handle this?
How do you dress after work?
When doctors are at their hospital, they typically wear either scrubs or lab coats. This is both because the job can be messy and it’s important to know who in a medical facility actually knows how to save lives. After work, though, they can dress however they want.
Do you ever give to charity?
In many respects, simply being a doctor is a charity in and of itself. Most people are ill-equipped to save lives for a living, so dedicating yourself to that craft is of great public service. Of course, there’s more than one way to give back. Do you support any other charitable endeavors?
What do you do when you lose a patient?
Without a doubt, the hardest thing for a doctor to experience is the loss of a patient. Sometimes, mere medicine simply isn’t enough, and people slip away from this mortal coil even under the best care money can buy. How would you handle such an unfortunate event?
Who in life inspires you the most?
Given their propensity for saving lives, doctors are incredibly inspirational people simply by making a living the way they do. In order to become good at medicine, though, they generally need an inspiration of their own pushing them along and getting them to study hard. What’s yours?
Do you ever exercise?
As a doctor, it would probably send a good message to patients for you to be in pretty good shape yourself. Of course, not all doctors necessarily follow this logic. Some doctors are in far worse condition than any of their patients have ever been, never once hitting a gym.
What type of diet do you keep?
In line with staying healthy by exercising, it could also be a good example to a doctor’s patients for them to eat green, leafy vegetables in lieu of junk foot and red meat. Once again, though, this isn’t necessarily the case. Some doctors would rather have their cake and eat it, too.
Would you ever date a coworker?
Because they spend the vast majority of their time at work, it makes sense that doctors would generally prefer to date other doctors. In any other profession, however, the idea of inter-office dating can be highly frowned upon. Of course, the heart wants what it wants…
Are you okay with wearing a lab coat?
For as long as any living people can remember, doctors have been wearing lab coats or scrubs for both practical and professional reasons. This is highly limiting to a TV wardrobe department, though, and a respected enough doctor need not buck to tradition just because it exists. Do you?
Is there any downside to being a doctor?
It should go without saying that being a doctor isn’t exactly easy. If it was, far more people would enter the field, knowing how much money and respect it can bring. However, the medical profession is simply too hard for the average person. In your opinion, what’s the toughest part?
What’s your worst quality?
No one is perfect, no even doctors. This is especially true on television, where the flawed personalities of our greatest lifesavers take center stage, often pushing their actual careers to the sidelines. A few negative character traits never stopped audiences from watching, so don’t worry too much about your answer.
Can you get along with authority figures?
People don’t think about it much, but believe it or not, everything doctors do for our health is mandated by some higher power within their hospital. If a procedure is too expensive, they might not be able to do it, even if lives are at stake. Does this bother you?
What’s your favorite movie about doctors?
While this quiz is largely about the great doctors we’ve all seen and loved on television, the movie industry is equally responsible for creating incredible medical practitioners who spread joy to audiences worldwide. Like the TV versions, movie doctors span across virtually every genre. Which of these diverse films is your favorite?
Has science ever gone too far?
As people with an incredible grasp of the human body, doctors are in a sense some of the greatest living scientists on earth. For this reason, they have a special connection with the nature of science, and should know if it’s being used for negative means. Do you think that’s happened yet?
Do you have any pets?
With their very lives lived on the beck and call of dying patients who may need help at a moment’s notice, doctors might not have the resources to own pets. Animals need constant care they don’t have time to give. Not that this would stop a dog lover from having a dog.
What’s your best quality?
As already mentioned, being a doctor is a public service in and of itself, so it goes without saying that most doctors are generous, kind-hearted people. However, there’s more than one way to make a positive difference in the world. How do you spread joy wherever you go?
Are you interested in politics?
In some respects, the greatest promotion a doctor can achieve is being named the Surgeon General of the United States. Equal parts a political position and one related to medicine, the Surgeon General needs more than mere mastery over the human body. Do you have the interest to get the job?
Have you ever smoked a cigarette?
Forget about drinking alcohol or even doing hard drugs. Perhaps the worst message a doctor could send to his or her patients is smoking a cigarette, and yet the idea was shockingly prevalent until quite recently in history. Are your lungs in good shape, or have they turned black already?
What’s your greatest wish?
When a truly altruistic person is given the cliché three wishes, they usually settle on things like world peace, solving famine, and curing all known diseases. Any one of these would be a noble goal, and doctors have the ability to make one come true. Is that what you focus on?
Do you like to read?
If nothing else, we hope that every doctor in the world read a textbook or two, and Henry’s Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body wouldn’t hurt. When it comes to reading novels or anything unrelated to medicine, though, the ball is in their court in terms of how much time they give books.
What type of vehicle do you drive?
With the amount of money doctors make, they pretty much have their pick of whatever vehicle in the world they want. For whatever reason, many medical professionals on TV have decided they want non-traditional forms of transportation with two wheels instead of four. Are you the same way, or do you prefer cars?
Do you consider yourself funny?
Regardless of whether they appear on sitcoms or more dramatic programs, the doctors on TV have mostly developed a strong sense of humor. In some respects they have to, finding a way to laugh through the pain and sorrow being a doctor can at times entail. Can you laugh at life, as well?
Which TV doctor do you find most inspirational?
Unsurprisingly, most of the doctors we see on TV were in turn inspired to become doctors by, well, other doctors on TV. The main character on any given program usually has another character they look up to and learn from. Which of these mentor figures do you think is smartest?
What’s your favorite show about doctors?
It’s entirely possible that the type of person you are has nothing at all to do with the type of television you watch. At this point, we’ve asked enough question to give you an answer. To ensure you get one you like, though, what’s your favorite medical based show?
