Everyone has their preferred movie genre. Some love science fiction. Others greatly enjoy thrillers. Still others will always go for romantic comedies. As the name makes it quite clear, the latter genre is a combination of two other movie genres - romance films and comedies. Dictionaries define romantic comedies as funny love stories that have a happy ending or as movies that feature a plot in which two very similar - or very different - individuals have to overcome obstacles so as to unite or alternatively, to reconcile.
While romantic comedies are for some reason most loved by women, that does not necessarily mean that men do not enjoy them either. Indeed, while back in the day romantic comedies may have been mostly targeted at women, today more and more romantic comedies are also targeted at men, with some even focusing on male protagonists. In addition, over the years romantic comedies have moved away from conventional structures. Nowadays quite a few romantic comedies explore topics that are more complex and sometimes even controversial.
Still, one of the main reasons why so many of us love romantic comedies is because they inspire hope. They almost always feature a happy ending which is so rare in life. Furthermore, they assure us that there is someone out there for everyone, and that we will meet that person sooner or later.
