Love is in the air, and we are dreaming about all of these male characters from romantic comedy films - males who are sweet, attractive, caring, adventurous and downright dreamy! When it comes to rom-com movies, there are usually five different types of guys that are featured: bad boys, sweethearts, goofballs, professionals and all-American men. Not every male character fits into one of these stereotypes perfectly, but these five types are quite normal in boy-meets-girl flicks.
Which one are you most attracted to, though? What sort of guy do you really like? How would you describe your type?
Do you like bad boys who ditch class, ride motorcycles and scare your parents? Are you drawn to a sweet man who is generous, who is your friend and who would do anything for you? Is the goofy guy your type - someone who makes you laugh constantly? What about working men, with go-getter attitudes and killer suits? Or perhaps the all-American male is your thing?

Andrew Paxton - The Proposal
In 2009, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds starred in this film centered around a fake proposal that went down to avoid a deportation. Of course, though, the crazy lie soon become reality, as the main characters realized they actually liked each other. How would you rate Ryan Reynolds’ character, Andrew Paxton?
Ben - How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
This 2003 romantic comedy told the story of a magazine writer named Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) and an advertising executive named Benjamin "Ben" Barry (Matthew McConaughey) who went on love-related journeys for work, lasting about 10 days or so, yet who ended up becoming an item. How would you rate Ben Barry?
Edward - Pretty Woman
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts starred in this rom-com film from the year 1990 - one that has gone down as a classic, with its prostitute-turned-more-than-that love story. It has iconic scenes and lines, as well as that iconic, wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis. How would you rate Richard Gere’s character, Edward Lewis?
Henry Roth - 50 First Dates
This movie, from 2004, starred Adam Sandler as a veterinarian and Drew Barrymore as an amnesiac. In it, Adam Sandler’s character, Henry Roth, worked to help Drew Barrymore’s character, Lucy Whitmore, remember her life in Hawaii (through 50 first dates or so!). How would you rate Adam Sandler’s character, Henry Roth?
Ben Stone - Knocked Up
Judd Apatow’s 2007 romantic comedy movie led to Ben Stone (Seth Rogen), a slacker, knocking up Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), a media personality. Other comedians, like Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, were also in the film, but we want to focus on Seth Rogen; how would you rate his Ben Stone?
Alex Hitchens - Hitch
In 2005, Will Smith played Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, a professional dating consultant. He taught men like Kevin James (well, his goofy character, named Albert Brennaman) how to attract women, and he - of course - ended up falling in love himself (with Eva Mendes’ hot character)! How would you rate his character, Hitch?
Pat - Silver Linings Playbook
Based on a novel, this rom-com film featured Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence as Patrizio "Pat" Solitano, Jr., a man with bipolar disorder, and Tiffany Maxwell, a widow who talks him into entering a dance competition with her. It won numerous awards, but what about Pat Solitano; how would you rate him?
Peter - Forgetting Sarah Marshall
In 2008, Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Russell Brand were in this film, which was also set in Hawaii. Jason Segel played Peter Bretter, the lead character, who is trying to, well, forget his ex-girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). How would you rate the trying-to-move-on character of Peter Bretter?
Patrick - 10 Things I Hate About You
This cult classic put a modern twist on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, with Patrick (Heath Ledger) eventually falling for Kat (Julia Stiles), despite the two being polar opposites. A TV series adaptation even happened, but the main focus here is Heath Ledger’s character; how would you rate Patrick?
Josh - Clueless
This is another cult classic from back in the day, which was also based on a story from long ago (Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma), yet was set in a modern-day high school. In it, the lead character, Cher (Alicia Silverstone), fell for Josh (Paul Rudd), so tell us: How would you rate Josh?
Augustus Waters - The Fault In Our Stars
Based on a novel by John Green, this film starred Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters. These characters were teen cancer patients who ended up falling in love, and both the book and the movie received tons of praises. How would you rate Augustus Waters?
Henry - The Time Traveler's Wife
In 2009, Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana) had a genetic disorder that led him to randomly time travel. This served as a bit of a complication in his love life, since he just wanted to always be with Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams). How would you rate Eric Bana’s time-travelling character named Henry? -bad -biz -biz -sweet
Kevin - 27 Dresses
This rom-com movie was, of course, about 27 dresses, since Katherine Heigl’s character, Jane, always served as a bridesmaid. Like all good romantic films, though, she ended up falling in love and finally getting to be the bride herself, thanks to James Marsden’s character, Kevin - and how would you rate him?
Jacob - Crazy, Stupid, Love.
This was one of those movies that starred so many actors and actresses, all with tangled-up plots, like Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. Ryan Gosling was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his performance as Jacob - and how would you rate him?
Tom - 500 Days of Summer
Released in 2009, this quirky film showed Joseph Gordon-Levitt falling in love with Zooey Deschanel, all through a nonlinear narrative and memories - a unique structure that made people either totally love or totally hate it. Zooey Deschanel’s character was named, of course, Summer, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s was Tom; how would you rate Tom?
Jake Perry - Sweet Home Alabama
In this movie, Reese Witherspoon played Melanie Smooter, a woman who grew up in Alabama yet who moved off to New York to chase after the shining lights and her big dreams. After returning home, though, she remembered why she loved home - and why she loved Josh Lucas’ character, Jake Perry; how would you rate him?
Melvin Udall - As Good As It Gets
Jack Nicholson starred here, as an obsessive-compulsive novelist. He and his co-star, Helen Hunt, won the Academy Award for Best Actor and Best Actress, and this romantic comedy is 140th on Empire magazine's "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time". How would you rate Jack Nicholson’s character, Melvin Udall?
Matty - 13 Going On 30
We all remember when Jennifer Garner was a 13-year-old girl and then a 30-year-old woman. She grew up, which is what she thought she wanted, but the only thing that really remained constant was her love for her best friend, Matty Flamhaff, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. How would you rate him?
Gary - The Break-Up
In 2006, Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston went through THE break-up, with Vince Vaughn playing his normal, goofy character (who was named Gary Grobowski in this film), and with Jennifer Aniston playing her usual, strong character (who was named Brooke Meyers in this film). How would you rate Gary Grobowski?
Duke - She's the Man
Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, started attending a boarding school in the midst of an elaborate scheme. Oh, and she started falling for one of her soccer teammates (Duke, played by Channing Tatum), AND she was disguised as a boy the whole time, which further complicated things. How would you rate Duke?
Scott - John Tucker Must Die
In 2006, a group of high-school-aged girls planned on totally breaking John Tucker’s heart. He ruled the school and thought he could play them all...but he is actually not the focus here! He had a little brother named Scott, who was played by Penn Badgley. How would you rate Scott?
Mike Chadway - The Ugly Truth
Katherine Heigl also starred in this movie, playing a morning show producer, named Abby, with no love life. However, when Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler) came onto the scene, with his chauvinistic ways, she - of course - somehow ended up falling for him, and him, for her! How would you rate Mike?
Dylan - Friends With Benefits
This movie was about friends - Mila Kunis as Jamie and Justin Timberlake as Dylan - with benefits. They thought they could take their relationship to the next level and that everything would be fine, but that would be a boring movie, so things got complicated! The point, though, is how would you rate Dylan?
Kirk - She's Out of My League
In 2010, Kirk (Jay Baruchel) met the perfect woman, Molly (Alice Eve), but he was shy and in a different group than she was, so the relationship was shaky, difficult, weird...all the things that perfectly add up for a great rom-com film! How would you rate Jay Baruchel’s character, Kirk?
Tom - Just Married
This movie, which came out in the year 2003, told the story of a young newlywed couple, on their honeymoon, trying to figure out life and, mainly, marriage. It starred Ashton Kutcher as Tom, the husband, and Brittany Murphy as Sarah, the wife. And speaking of...How would you rate Tom?
William - Notting Hill
This 1999 British romantic comedy featured Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts as William Thacker, a bookshop owner, and Anna Scott, a famous star. The film won a BAFTA, a British Comedy Award and a Brit Award, but tell us the one thing we really want to know: How would you rate William?
Lloyd - Say Anything...
This hit from the ‘80s told the love story between Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) and Diane Court (Ione Skye) - a story that has been called the greatest modern movie romance, as well as one of the best high-school movies of all time. How would you rate John Cusack’s character, Lloyd Dobler?
Sebastian - Cruel Intentions
In 1999, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe played step-siblings who were trying to deflower Reese Witherspoon’s character, Annette Hargrove, in a steamy, dramatic, teen and romantic film. But all we care about right now is Sebastian Valmont, the character who was played by Ryan Phillippe; how would you rate him?
Logan - The Lucky One
In 2008, Nicholas Sparks released this novel of the same name, and in 2012, Zac Efron brought Logan Thibault, a US Marine, to life. The story is centered around a photograph, luck and the woman in the photo - but mostly it is all about Logan Thibault. How would you rate him?
Danny - Grease
This is an oldie but a goodie about two unlikely people falling in love during one magical summer (then ending up at the same school), in a story told through catchy songs! Olivia Newton-John portrayed Sandy, the good girl, while John Travolta was Danny, the greaser. How would you rate Danny?
Holden McNeil - Chasing Amy
Ben Affleck played a comic artist who fell in love with a lesbian woman in this film, which was written and directed by Kevin Smith, from 1997. Kevin Smith has directed many movies, and Ben Affleck has starred in many movies, but how would you rate this character, Holden McNeil, specifically?
Landon Carter - A Walk To Remember
This film starred Mandy Moore as Jamie Sullivan, a good girl who fell for Landon Carter, a not-so-good guy, who was played by Shane West. It was based on a Nicholas Sparks’ book, it was a real tear-jerking movie, and it, most importantly, had Landon Carter; how would you rate him?
Tom - Made of Honor
This romantic comedy had a twist, as a man, Tom (Patrick Dempsey), tried to win over a woman who had asked him to be her "maid" of honor. We won’t spoil anything and say if it worked or not. We just want to know one thing: How would you rate Tom?
