Back in the 1960s, Gene Roddenberry responded to the social climate by creating a TV show about a bunch of people in the far off future who boldly go into the furthest reaches of outer space to explore new worlds and discover new life and expand human knowledge. His idea was to create a show that was fantastical and speculative and set in the distant future, but that would be relevant and tackle the issues of the present day.
