Making a career in the entertainment industry is tough no matter which way you look at it. There is always loads of competition to deal with from other hopefuls who are just as hungry for fame and fortune. It helps if you know people in the business but the right connections can sometimes take years to make.
A fair dose of pluck is required to make yourself stand out from the rest and a little sprinkling of luck is always welcome. Think of Emma Watson, a girl whose only former acting experience before Harry Potter, was school plays. Sure she had the skill, but landing the very first film role she auditioned for? That's lucky!
Sometimes all it takes is just being in the right place at the right time like Charlize Theron. She was spotted by a talent agent in a bank after she threw a tantrum about an uncashed cheque. He ended up introducing her to a few agents and getting her into an acting school. Just one year later she landed her first acting gig and now she's an Academy Award-winning actress.
