When it comes to movie nights, most girls opt for romantic dramas or romantic comedies. While romantic dramas are serious, romantic comedies are funny. Perhaps that is why the latter genre always wins when it is a toss up between the two. After all, while it is true that both romantic dramas and romantic comedies are entertaining, romantic comedies have the advantage of having the ability to make us laugh and to make us see the absurdity of life, and even the absurdity of romance.
Nowadays we are lucky to have access to countless of romantic comedies. Some of these romantic comedies are iconic and have since their release garnered a cult following. Others are not so great - their plot and their characters might lack depth - but they still manage to entertain us nonetheless. The best part of any romantic comedy is probably the actors that star in it, and more specifically, the male actors. Sometimes they are portrayed as players, sometimes they are portrayed as lovable and clueless gentlemen, and other times they are portrayed as ugly ducklings who eventually grow into handsome, successful men and finally get the girl of their dreams.
Whatever the stereotype, most of us are always down for watching a romantic comedy. Unfortunately, we can all agree that not all romantic comedies are equally entertaining. 10 Things I Hate About You
10 Things I Hate About You is without doubt one of the most popular romantic comedies out there. It came out in 1999 and starred actors such as Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Few people know that the plot of this movie was based on William Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew.
50 First Dates
When a vet named Henry falls in love with a girl named Lucy, he quickly realizes that she suffers from short-term memory loss. Wooing Lucy every single day is no easy task but it is even harder to get in the good books of her protective parents. Reese Witherspoon played the role of Melanie Smooter, a girl from Alabama who made it big in New York City, in this 2002 romantic comedy. About to get married to a successful New York bachelor, Melanie must first obtain divorce from her Alabama-based husband.

Bridget Jones's Diary
Bridget Jones’s Diary was released in 2001 and has since become one of the most popular romantic comedies ever made. Renee Zellweger plays the titular role in this movie which also stars Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. This film was so successful that two sequels were released – one in 2004 and another one in 2016.
The Holiday
Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet play the role of two women who decide to swap their homes in an effort to turn their lives around. This movie came out in 2006 and also starred the actors Jude Law and Jack Black.
You've Got Mail
Back in the 1990’s Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks often starred as the lead actors – or rather, as the lead couple – in various movies, including the 1998 film You’ve Got Mail, which focuses on two rival booksellers who hate one another in real life but who can’t help but fall in love with each other online.
Hitch
Hitch was released in 2005 and starred Will Smith as the lead character – a man nicknamed Hitch who works as a “date doctor”. This movie also starred actors such as Eva Mendes, Kevin James and Amber Valletta. While its plot was interesting enough, this movie received only average reviews both by film critics and the audience.
The Big Sick
The Big Sick was released last year – in 2017. It focuses on the romantic relationship between a Pakistani comic named Kumail and a graduate student named Emily who is from the U.S. This movie, which starred Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan as the lead actors, received outstanding reviews.
Four Weddings and a Funeral
An Englishman named Charles is very unlucky in love but when he meets a woman named Carrie who is from the U.S at a friend’s wedding, his luck changes. Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell starred as the lead actors in this 1994 movie which has since been ranked as one of the best British films ever made.
Home Again
Reese Witherspoon played the role of Alice Kinney, a single mother who permits three young filmmakers to move into her house, in this 2017 romantic comedy film. Despite its talented cast, this film did not perform that well and its reviews were below average but that doesn’t mean that it is not worth a watch.
Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman has, over the years, become a classic romantic comedy and one that every romantic has to see at least once in their life. A modern day Cinderella story, this movie stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere as the lead actors.
The Proposal
When a book editor named Margaret is faced with deportation back to Canada, she convinces her assistant Andrew to pretend that they are engaged. Andrew agrees to help Margaret out, be he does have a few conditions that he wants her to meet. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds starred as the lead actors in this 2009 romantic comedy.
Amelie
Audrey Tautou played the role of Amelie in this 2001 French romantic comedy. The plot of this movie focuses on a young waitress who, upon finding a box of childhood memorabilia and returning it to the rightful owner, decides to continue performing good deeds that bring smiles to other people’s faces. This movie did exceptionally well in the box office and won a number of awards.
Love, Actually
This movie is unique in that instead of focusing on one or two main characters, it looks at a number of different characters (and nine stories in total), such as Harry – a man who is married but who can’t help but fall for his secretary. A great number of famous Hollywood actors starred in this movie, including Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth to name just a few.
Roman Holiday
Probably one of the oldest romantic comedies on this quiz, Roman Holiday starred the iconic actress Audrey Hepburn as well as the actor Gregory Peck. This movie, which came out all the way back in 1953, focuses on a European princess who decides to spend some time on her own in Rome which is where she meets – and later falls for - a reporter from the U.S.
About a Boy
Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Grant, Toni Collette and Rachel Weisz are just a few of the actors that starred in this 2002 romantic comedy. The plot of this movie focuses on a man named Will who, in the hopes of meeting women, comes up with an imaginary child and starts attending single parent meetings. He eventually meets a young boy named Marcus and the two become friends.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
When Sarah Marshall breaks up with Peter Bretter, he decides to go to Hawaii. Unfortunately for him, Sarah is there too, and she’s not alone. This 2008 romantic comedy which starred actors such as Jason Segel, Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Kristen Bell and Paul Rudd was well received both by film critics and the audience alike.
Clueless
Clueless is another incredibly popular romantic comedy and over the years has garnered a serious cult following. This movie came out in 1995 and starred actors such as Alicia Silverstone (who played the protagonist Cher), Paul Rudd and Stacey Dash.
Letters to Juliet
Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Egan, and Vanessa Redgrave are just a few of the actors that starred in this romantic comedy that came out in 2010. The plot of this movie focuses on a young woman named Sophie who, upon visiting Verona, finds a letter from a heartbroken old woman at a wall dedicated to Juliet Capulet (the heroine from Romeo and Juliet), reaches out to her and in consequence, changes her life.
Grease
Danny and Sandy meet during their summer holidays and can’t help falling in love. However, their summer fling soon ends and the two return to their normal lives. But things get complicated when Sandy’s parents move from Australia to the U.S where she accidentally enrolls at Danny’s school. This movie was released all the way back in 1978 and starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the lead actors.
Silver Linings Playbook
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence played the lead roles in this movie which came out in 2010 with supporting roles played by actors such as Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker. This film was highly successful and received countless of awards and award nominations.
Crazy, Stupid, Love
Crazy, Stupid, Love was released in 2011 and starred such talented actors as Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore and Steve Carell. The plot of this movie focuses on a middle aged man who suddenly finds himself divorced. He has no idea how to date but luckily, a playboy named Jacob Palmer is here to help him.
Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids is a romantic comedy that was released in 2011. It performed exceptionally well at the box office and received countless of awards and award nominations. The film focuses on a young woman named Annie who is forced to be the maid of honor at her best friend's wedding even though her own life is a mess.
Wedding Crashers
Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Isla Fisher and Rachel McAdams are just a few of the actors that starred in Wedding Crashers, a romantic comedy that came out in 2005. This movie focuses on two divorce mediators named Jeremy and John whose hobby is crashing weddings.
Blended
Back in the 1990’s we had Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Now we have Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. Just like Ryan and Hanks before them, Barrymore and Sandler have starred as the leading actors in a number of romantic comedies, not least this one which came out in 2014.
The Ugly Truth
While The Ugly Truth, a movie that starred Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, did not receive great reviews that does not mean that it is not entertaining. This romantic comedy was released in 2009 and focuses on two rather cliché characters – a seemingly perfect and very organized woman and a devious and spontaneous man.
The Other Woman
The Other Woman is a romantic comedy that came out a few years ago, or in 2014 to be exact. It starred Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Nicki Minaj, Leslie Mann and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and its plot focuses on a woman who ends up in a relationship with a cheating man.
He's Just Not That Into You
He’s Just Not That Into You came out nine years ago, in 2009 and starred such famous actors as Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Connelly. This film received average reviews although it was suggested that there were far too many protagonists and as such, too little time devoted to each of them.
The Princess Diaries
Anne Hathaway played the role of Mia Thermopolis in this 2001 romantic comedy. Mia is a normal teenager (albeit a very unpopular one) whose life is turned around when she discovers that she is an heiress to a small municipality in Europe. This movie was Hathaway’s film debut.
Kate & Leopold
Kate McKay is a career woman living in 21st century New York. Leopold is the third Duke of Albany. Both are cynical about love. But when Leopold suddenly wakes up in the future – in 21st century New York – and the two meet and fall in love, their opinions begin to change. This movie was released in 2001 and starred Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan as the lead actors.
Just Friends
Ryan Reynolds played the role of Chris in this 2005 romantic comedy. Chris is hopelessly in love with his friend Jamie – played by Amy Smart - but she only wants to be friends. Ten years later, Chris is a successful – and good looking – executive record producer but he still hasn’t forgotten Jamie.
The Five Year Engagement
Emily Blunt, Jason Segel and Chris Pratt are just a few of the talented actors that starred in this 2012 romantic comedy. This movie performed well at the box office and received above average reviews. Film critics especially liked the chemistry between Blunt and Segel.
Just Go With It
After his heart is broken, Danny decides to pretend that he is married so as to avoid serious relationships. However, when he meets the girl of his dreams his lies become an unnecessary obstacle. Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker, Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman all starred in this 2011 romantic comedy.
Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is not only a romantic comedy but also a musical. It was released in 2008 and starred actors such as Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth among many others. It was one of the highest grossing movies of the year and a sequel to it was released earlier this year.
Leap Year
What should you do when you want to marry your boyfriend but he hasn’t proposed to you yet? Go to Ireland during leap year and propose to him yourself, of course! That’s exactly what Anna – played by Amy Adams – decides to do in this 2010 romantic comedy but of course, complications soon arise, especially when she meets a handsome stranger.
She's the Man
She’s the Man is a romantic comedy movie that was released in 2006. It starred the actress Amanda Bynes who played the role of Viola Hastings, a young woman who takes not only her brother’s place at school but also his place on the soccer team.
Legally Blonde
It’s hard to believe that Legally Blonde came out 17 years ago – in 2001. It is one of those romantic comedies that have since become iconic and it is so funny that it has earned a place on a number of “funniest movies” lists. This movie starred Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Davis and Luke Wilson. A sequel has since been released.
