Like everything else, music evolves over time, but there is a genre that has been going strong for decades--and that is pop. At first, we had artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson, then we had Britney, and now we have a whole array of talented pop musicians. This is the kind of music that stands the test of time because it’s fun and it makes people dance--and who doesn’t want to dance?
Not all pop music was created equally, though. Some pop songs are better than others--while there are some really good pop artists out there, there are equally as many bad ones. It’s fine, though, everyone’s got different tastes so someone’s least favorite is bound to be someone else’s favorite artist.
Someone’s favorite musicians is very telling tale about who they are as a person, and what kind of things that they like. Music taste and popstar fandom may carry over to other aspects of life, like with someone’s taste in actors and who their celebrity crushes are. They may seem a bit unrelated at first, but it may be a bit surprising to see how connected they are.
Take this quiz to find out how pop music tastes and dream actor hubbies go hand in hand!
Ariana Grande
She started out as a Nickelodeon star but has quickly evolved into being one of the best pop stars out there at the moment. Don’t be fooled by her small stature--she has one of the most powerful voices out there. Literally every song she has turned out has been a certified bop and it doesn’t look like there’s any stopping her.
Britney Spears
There are a lot of great pop stars out there, but Britney may just be the queen of pop. Ever since her first single, she has been releasing hit after hit. She is basically one of the biggest cultural icons of our time. While she had a bit of a meltdown back in 2007, she has made a great comeback and her social media presence is a total joy.
Harry Styles
Of the members of One Direction (R.I.P.) Harry has done great as a solo artist. He was always a crowd favorite--I mean, who doesn’t love that mad flow of hair--but he’s really been able to break into himself on his own. Even better than his music, though, is his amazing sense of style.
Beyoncé
There is no question--Beyoncé is one of, if not the, greatest pop stars of all time. She is Sasha Fierce, after all, and there is nothing that Beyoncé does that is bad. She is a great performer and has an unimaginable amount of stamina. She even made one of her best performances while carrying a child, which is super impressive.
Rihanna
It feels like there is nothing that Rihanna can’t do, and that’s probably very true. Not only is she a great musician, but we’ve seen her break out in so many different business ventures, and succeed in all of them. She doesn’t care what other people think and lives her life authentically and happily. We should all be more like RiRi.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga started out as the pop star who wore crazy outfits (and even a meat suit at one point) but she has been able to stay in the game for so long because of her talent. She’s still as quirky and fashion-forward as ever, though. She is always herself, and through her image and music, she’s allowed so many people to feel okay to be themselves, too.
Justin Timberlake
Also known as the only member of *NSYNC that really matters at this point, JT has done a lot in his music career. He’s best known for his earlier work, singing those smooth love jams accompanied with really cool dance moves. He’s started to go more of a dad route these days, and singing songs for children’s movies, but we still love him.
Justin Bieber
The evolution of Justin Bieber as a pop star has been interesting to say the least. He started out as a child with his swoopy bangs singing industry-produced pop songs. As he got older he started to make music that the masses actually enjoyed, but he started to be a real rowdy teen. Now, who knows what is going on in J-Biebs’s mind. Just remember that we let him get away with making a lyric, “Say hello to falsetto in 3, 2, swag.”
Christina Aguilera
There are a lot of pop stars out there with mad singing skills, but Christina blows a lot of them out of the water with her strong pipes. She has a unique voice that hasn’t been matched on the scene yet. Not only does she have a super strong voice, but she’s been dishing out hits for almost two decades now.
Drake
While Drake is more of a rapper than a traditional pop star, he’s still on this quiz because he’s one of the most popular musicians out there at the moment, and he does have a few pop-ier songs. Once an actor on “Degrassi” this guy outdid the Beatles and has the most top 100 songs at one time, which is super impressive.
Ed Sheeran
He’s the guy that makes all of the gushy, lovey-dovey songs that people love to put in the background of sappy photo slideshows. He also is the one responsible for “The Shape of You” which is currently the most played song in the world. There’s something about this redhead with a guitar that makes people want to listen more and more.
Mariah Carey
It isn’t Christmas if “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah doesn’t play at least 50 times in a day. She has been a cultural icon ever since her beginning as an artist, both as a person but also as a singer who can hit high notes that nobody else can hit. You also can’t forget that time she brought out ice cream for the audience on TRL.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry may be kind of a hit-or-miss artist these days, but there’s no question that she has dished out some certified bops in her time. She is also one of the first pop singers to really get out with some weird, albeit aesthetically pleasing, outfits. She’s gone through a rebranding phases, but we all can agree that pastel Katy was the best Katy.
Miley Cyrus
She may have started as a Disney child star as Hannah Montana, but as soon as she grew up a little, she was quick to get rid of the old Disney image. Some people say that she went out of control a little bit, but other people love her new image. Regardless, it’s true that she’s become a more interesting musician over time.
Taylor Swift
Taylor is one of the most popular artists in the world right now, and it doesn’t look like she’s going anywhere anytime soon. She started out as a country-pop singer, but soon branched out into other styles, and consistently releases bop after bop. She consistently surprises us, and it’s usually for the better.
Cher
She’s an oldie but still a goodie--Cher is a cultural icon and is loved by most pop music lovers. She’s still out here, singing songs and showing her sick emoji game on Twitter. I don’t think that there’s a person who can dislike Cher; she’s just so good at what she does.
Selena Gomez
Selena is another Disney actor-turned-pop-star, having her humble beginnings as the star of the show “Wizards of Waverly Place.” She’s really grown as an artist, and has also tried her best to get out of the Disney bubble as an adult. She’s still popping out hits, but has definitely started to get a bit more artsy.
Adele
Adele is the perfect artist to listen to when you’re feeling sad and just need to let it out, or if you’re in a perfectly good mood but just want to be reminded of what it feels like to be sad. She’s got the whole breakup song thing down, and she’s so good at it because her powerful vocals are pretty much unmatched.
Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo has been an icon for decades now, and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of stopping. She’s a great performer and also a timeless beauty--she hasn’t aged at all. Even though she’s a world-class popstar, she’s still really just Jenny from the block--she used to have a little, now she has a lot.
Demi Lovato
Ever since Demi had her debut on one of the best movies of our generation, “Camp Rock,” she’s been going hard and making great songs. Not only is she a great musician, but she’s also been a great role model to many people since she’s been so transparent about the issues that she deals with.
Zayn Malik
He was the first member of One Direction to leave the group and honestly, it was probably a good move for him. As a solo artist, he’s done a pretty good job for himself and has dished out some pretty good songs. He’s also ditched the boy band thing for something a little more grown up, which is fine by me.
Bruno Mars
He’s got style, he’s got moves, but most importantly he’s got that funk. While he first started out singing really sappy love songs, he’s moved into the party music genre in the last few years. He’s got the voice and the talent to do pretty much any genre he wants, which is pretty cool for him.
P!nk
She’s always had a tough-girl attitude and we love her for that. She isn’t afraid to be loud and to be different, and it shows in her music. While other people are singing about sad things, she’s flipping the message and turning her songs into anthems of empowerment, while also looking really cool in the process.
Aaron Carter
You might be asking yourself, “Who is Aaron Carter again?” If you don’t remember, he was a pop star sensation in the early-2000’s with hits like “I Want Candy” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq.” He disappeared for a while, but he’s come back and is making new music. He might not be able to escape his early years, but he’s trying his best.
Shakira
As we all know, her hips don’t lie, but there’s more to Shakira than that. She’s an incredible dancer and she also has one of the most unique voices in pop. Her songs always deliver as something that you can dance to, and they’re pretty much timeless--songs from over a decade ago are still relevant because they’re just that good.
Lana Del Rey
Lana is basically the mascot for every aesthetics-loving sad girl out there. If you want to feel nostalgic and upset, then Lana Del Rey has the perfect music for that mood. She’s got a voice that sounds like dreaming, and her lyrics just accentuate that. Her SNL performance years ago was kinda bad, but we can try and forget about it.
Pitbull
You know him as Mr. Worldwide, or at least that bald guy who is known for having artists more popular than him featured in his songs. He has made some bops, though, and his songs especially go hard when they’re in Spanish. If anything, Pitbull can always manage to bring some energy to the table.
Halsey
If you want to feel bad about yourself as a young 20-something that hasn't gotten very far yet, then don't look at Halsey because she'll just make you feel worse. Like many pop stars, she got her start young, and it looks like she's not going to stop. She's pretty much like the queen of sad pop music, which is all the rage right now.
Gwen Stefani
She may have had her start with the punk band No Doubt, but she also did quite well as a solo artist, going more pop than punk for sure. She’s got a cool aesthetic, but her music also bops very hard. It’s been over a decade and we’re still all spelling out the word “bananas” at the function.
Ke$ha
Ke$ha may have gotten her start singing vapid party songs, but she has never made any bad music. While she was just playing the music industry with songs like “Tik Tok” she did it super well. Now, she finally has the opportunity to really show herself as a musical artist, and she did not disappoint us.
Nick Jonas
He’s the youngest and probably the most beloved Jonas brother. We loved him when he enthusiastically repeated, “Red dress!” in the hit song “Burning Up” and we love him even more now. He used to be a little cutie but now he’s a verified hunk, and he’s doing great as a solo pop artist.
Carly Rae Jepsen
We all thought that Carly Rae Jepsen was going to only be a one-hit wonder with her song “Call Me Maybe” but she surprised all of us for the better. She manages to make some of the catchiest songs out there.
Jason Derulo
You know when a song is a Jason Derulo song since he doesn’t let you forget it. Him saying his name at the beginning of a track in a flashy way is required for any Jason Derulo song, or even any song that has him in it. Even if he doesn’t want to introduce his songs with a “Jason Deruuulo” anymore, he can’t because that’s his thing now.
Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae doesn’t just have great outfits (which she does for sure) but she’s also got some super catchy songs. She likes to take vibes from older pop music and make it her own--and it works so well. She definitely knows how to make people want to get up and dance a little.
Avril Lavigne
She may be more punk than pop, but she’s definitely part of the pop music scene (or at least was). Many girls used to want to be like her because she wasn’t about to take anything from anyone. She was loud, outspoken, and also wore men’s ties--which is very cool.
