Rate These Movies And We'll Guess Your Favorite Actor

It's holiday time and we all know what that means! It's time to relax, unwind, and have a little fun before we throw ourselves into a new year. We're going to spend time with our family and friends, exchange gifts and probably put on a few pounds eating all sorts of yummy holiday treats and big celebratory meals. And that's okay because we do have something to celebrate: we've made it through another year!

With all this few time on our hands, it's also a great time to catch up on all the movies we might have missed out on this year. The movies we've been meaning to watch for ages but just never seem to have time for. We might even decide to watch a few of our old favorites while we are at it. Perhaps even a few holiday classics like Home Alone, Elf, or The Grinch.

Today's quiz is perfect for the holidays; all our readers need to do is rate our list of movies and at the end, we will try and guess who their favorite actor is. It doesn't get any more chilled than that! So sit back, relax and tell us which of these movies was the best!

Question 1

Super 8:

This 2011 film is set in 1979 and follows the story of a group of young friends who witness a catastrophic train derailment while filming their own Super 8 movie. They barely manage to escape with their lives but the soon afterward strange and scary things start to happen in their small town. This movie starred Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler and was written and directed by J. J. Abrams, the same director responsible for films like Armageddon, Cloverfield, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Inception:

In this edgy science-fiction thriller Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of a high-tech thief who specializes in stealing information and trade secrets by entering into the subconscious of his targets using futuristic dream technology. He gets offered the chance to have his criminal history erased in exchange for one last job but this time he needs to implant an idea rather than steal one. This film also starred Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, and Tom Berenger.

Question 3

X-Men: First Class:

This 2011 film is a prequel to the X-Men movie franchise and tells the origin story of some of the main characters. Set in 1962 the storyline focuses on the relationship between Professor Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy), and Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and how their different ideas about mutants finally drove them apart. The movie featured Kevin Bacon as the villain Sebastian Shaw, as well as Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence.

Gravity:

In this 2013 science fiction thriller George Clooney and Sandra Bullock play two astronauts who become stranded in space after their shuttle is hit by space debris, and their subsequent struggle to try and get back to Earth. The visual effects in the film took more than three years to create but it was worth the effort as the movie went on to become the eighth highest-grossing film of 2013 (Wikipedia). Gravity won seven Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Beauty and the Beast:

This 2017 remake of the classic story of Beauty and the Beast was one of the most expensive films ever made, with an estimated budget of around $255 million. It was a box office hit and became the second highest grossing film of the year grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, according to Wikipedia. The role of Belle was played by Harry Potter star Emma Watson and the Beast was portrayed by Dan Stevens. Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson also had supporting roles.

Black Swan:

In this psychological horror film, Natalie Portman stars as a ballerina who is pushed to the edge when she lands the role of the Swan Queen in her dance companies production of Swan Lake. As she struggles to take on the part of both the black swan and the white swan her mind unravels, leaving her confused but still determined. The film, which also featured Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder, was directed by Darren Aronofsky who is also responsible for movies like Requiem for a Dream and Mother!

Question 7

Dredd:

This film is set in an apocalyptic future where crime has reached an all-time high. In order to try and maintain law and order the city deploys Judges, who have the authority not only to arrest criminals but also to sentence them on the spot. One such judge, Judge Dredd (played by Karl Urban) takes his rookie partner out on her first day and while responding to a call for help from a tower block they find themselves coming up against notorious criminal mastermind Ma-Ma (played by Lena Headey) who rules the 200-story high rise with an iron fist.

World War Z:

The zombies have arrived and there is only one man who can save us all - Brad Pitt! In this film, Pitt plays the role of a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world and outrun the zombies in order to find a way to stop a spreading pandemic. The film was based on the 2006 novel (of the same name) written by Max Brooks. According to Wikipedia, World War Z is the highest-grossing zombie film of all time raking in over $540 million off the back of $190 million budget.

Wild:

In this 2014 biographical adventure film, Reese Witherspoon plays the role of a woman who decides to hike 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to face her past and find herself once again. The film is based on Cheryl Strayed's 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, and featured Laura Dem in a supporting role along with Thomas Sadoski, Michiel Huisman, and Gaby Hoffmann. Witherspoon was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying Strayed.

Question 10

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows:

In this sequel to the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jnr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) must travel across Europe to try and stop an elaborate plot by Professor Moriarty (played by Jared Harris), to start a war. The film, which also featured Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace, was directed by Guy Ritchie, the same man responsible for movies like RocknRolla, Snatch, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The Lego Movie:

In this 2014 computer-animated film a LEGO figurine (and construction worker) named Emmet J. Brickowski stumbles across a strange artifact and becomes embroiled in a battle to stop the world as he knows it from being glued in place forever. Chris Pratt provides the voice of Emmet while Will Ferrell is the villain. The movie also features the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman. The film did well at the box office; grossing $469 million worldwide against its $60 million budget (Wikipedia).

Question 12

The Dark Knight Rises:

This superhero film takes place eight years after the events of The Dark Knight and sees Bruce Wayne (once again played by Christian Bale) forced to take on the role of Batman once again, this time to save Gotham City from an impending nuclear event orchestrated by Bane (played by Tom Hardy). The film also features Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman who all reprise their roles and introduces Selina Kyle (played by Anne Hathaway). Give this film a rating:

Jurassic World:

In Jurassic World, the dinosaur park is finally open for business and it's packed with guests all hungry to see the beasts and all the parks other attractions. But the park scientists have also been creating new types of dinosaurs using gene splicing and this proves to the parks undoing. The film, which takes place 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, BD Wong, and Irrfan Khan.

Pitch Perfect 2:

The second installment in the Pitch Perfect film series sees the Barden University Bellas, an all-female a cappella singing group, trying to win against the German national team in a world singing championship. The film features a large ensemble cast including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Ester Dean, Chrissie Fit, Kelley Jakle, Shelley Regner, Skylar Astin, Ben Platt, Adam DeVine, and John Michael Higgins. In this 2014 musical fantasy film, a childless couple sets out to try and break a curse set upon them by a witch. The film was inspired by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel" and all the characters stories come together in the woods. The ensemble cast for this movie included Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, and Johnny Depp. Give this movie a rating:

Ant-Man:

He may be the smallest superhero around but that doesn't mean that he should be underestimated! In this 2015 Marvel movie, Paul Rudd takes on the role of Ant-Man, who is forced to go up against his former employer (Micheal Douglas) who plans to use shrinking technology for nefarious purposes. The movie also stars Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip "T.I." Harris, Anthony Mackie, Wood Harris, Judy Greer, and David Dastmalchian. The sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, was released in July 2018.

Spectre:

Spectre is the 24th movie in the James Bond movie franchise, which is the longest continually-running film series in history. In this film, Daniel Craig once again takes on the role of 007 and this time he goes up against the global criminal organization Spectre and their leader Ernst Stavro Blofeld (played by Christoph Waltz). The film also featured Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Dave Bautista, and Ralph Fiennes. Spectre grossed over $880 million at the box office becoming the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2015 (Wikipedia).

In this 2016 romantic musical Ryan Gosling plays a jazz pianist who meets and falls in love with an aspiring actress played by Emma Stone. The film, which was written and directed by Damien Chazelle, was a massive commercial success raking in $446 million in box office returns off the back of a budget of $30 million (Wikipedia). La La Land was nominated for 14 Academy Awards winning for Best Director (Chazelle), Best Actress (Stone), Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Production Design.

Arrival:

In this 2016 science fiction flick, Amy Adams plays the role of Louise Banks; a linguist enlisted by the U.S. Army to try and communicate with aliens who have arrived on Earth in twelve locations spread out across the globe. Banks is tasked with finding out why the aliens have come to Earth. Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker both played supporting roles in this movie. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and won for Best Sound Editing.

Despicable Me:

In this 2010 animated family comedy film, a supervillain named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) decides to adopt three little girls from an orphanage, not because he wants to raise them, but because he wants them to help him steal a shrink-ray from his nemesis Vector (Jason Segel). He plans to use the shrink-ray to pull off his biggest heist ever: stealing the moon. But, of course, things don't go exactly as he planned. This was the first movie in the franchise which now includes three more films.

The Disaster Artist:

This film tells the true story of two budding actors (Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero) who arrived in Hollywood in the late 90s hungry to become stars. But while Greg managed to find some work, Tommy did not and was repeatedly told that he didn't have the talent to make it happen. That's when he decided to make his write, direct, and star in his own film - The Room. This film starred James Franco as Tommy with his brother Dave Franco playing the part of Greg.

Edge of Tomorrow:

This science fiction film stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Cruise plays the role of Major William Cage (a public relations officer with no combat experience) who is forced to become an operational soldier after he angers his superiors. In the movie, most of Europe has been invaded by aliens, and the humans are losing the battle in a big way. Cage loses his life almost immediately when thrust into combat but finds himself in a time loop that keeps him coming back to the same day.

Geostorm:

After a series of natural problems threaten the globe the world leaders come together to build a system of satellites that control the global climate and keep mega storms at bay. In this movie, the system starts to go haywire and it appears as though someone is trying to manipulate it in order to cause a catastrophic geostorm. It's up to one of the creators of the system (Gerald Butler) to save the day. Who thought that this was a good movie?

Alice in Wonderland:

In this 2010 remake of the classic story of Alice in Wonderland, the role of Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska while Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter. Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, and Matt Lucas also star in this Tim Burton film, along with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall. Tim Burton is also the director responsible for other fantasy films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.:

This action spy film is set during the Cold War era and stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris, and Hugh Grant. It was directed by Guy Ritchies and based on a 1964 television series of the same name. The film received mixed reviews from critics and didn't fare so well at the box office, only making $109 million worldwide off the back of a $75–84 million budget. Who thought that this movie was worthwhile and who thought it wasn't?

The Great Gatsby was directed by Baz Luhrmann, the same director responsible for films like Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, and Australia. This film follows the high-class life of billionaire Jay Gatsby during the Roaring Twenties, a man who loved to throw parties for his friends. The film starred Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Debicki, with Leonardo DiCaprio taking on the role of Gatsby. The movie won two Academy Awards, one for Best Production Design and another for Best Costume Design.

The Martian:

The Martian is based on a book of the same name written by Andy Weir and was directed by Ridley Scott. The film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars, months away from rescue and needs to find a way to survive until help arrives. It also starred Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, and Aksel Hennie. It became the 10th highest-grossing film of 2015 and received seven Academy Award nominations according to Wikipedia.

Agent J and Agent K return in Men in Black 3 and this time Agent J needs to travel back in time to the 1960s in order to rescue his partner and save the world from a devasting alien invasion. This film, which was released 15 years after the original Men in Black, featured Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith returning to their roles and Josh Brolin as a younger Agent K. Jemaine Clement plays the role of the villain known as Boris the Animal.

In this 2011 Marvel film, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is banished from his home of Asgard and sent to Earth after restarting a war which had been dormant for some time. His brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) plots to take the Asgardian throne for himself and Thor, although disabused of his powers (and his mighty hammer), must prove himself worthy to defeat him. This film also starred Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgård, Colm Feore, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins.

The Lego Batman Movie:

In The Lego Batman Movie, Batman manages to capture all of Gotham's criminals in one go (with a little help from the new Police Commissioner) but this leaves a huge gap in his life and he finds himself lonely and without purpose. But when the Joker accidentally releases a host of other villains from the Phantom Zone Batman needs to conquer his problem with working with others in order to save Gotham City. In this movie, Batman is voiced by Will Arnett with Zach Galifianakis providing the voice of the Joker.

In the 2016 Disney film Moana, a young teenager named Moana (voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho) goes on a daring mission across the open ocean in a bid to save her people from a blight on their island home. The film also featured the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards nominations, one for Best Animated Feature and the other for Best Original Song.

Ralph (a character in an arcade game) is tired of being a bad guy in this movie. He decides to leave his game behind and try to find somewhere that he can be the hero of the story for a change. We all know what it's like to have a boss who gets on our nerves, don't we? Well in this 2011 dark comedy three friends decide that they are tired of being mistreated and plot to get rid of their respective bosses once and for all. But of course, nothing works out quite the way they planned! The film stars Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx. In this 2017 superhero film, a pilot crash lands on the island of Themyscira and meets the Amazon warrior princess Diana. He informs her of the world war that is taking place and she sets out to stop it. In this DC film, the role of Wonder Woman was played by Gal Gadot and the movie also featured Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, and Elena Anaya. According to Wikipedia, it was the tenth highest-grossing film of 2017.

Atomic Blonde:

In this 2017 spy film, Charlize Theron plays the role of Lorraine Broughton, a spy who is charged with tracking down double agents in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The movie, which also starred the likes of James McAvoy, John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella, and Toby Jones. It earned $100 million at the box office off the back of a $30 million budget. Fans will also be happy to know that a sequel is in the works!
