While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going strong for ten years now, the smash success of all of the Marvel movies hasn't always been the case. There were some interesting movies and TV shows during the seventies, but in 1986, Howard The Duck made his big screen debut under the producer eye of George Lucas. Too bad the movie is held in the same regard as some of Lucas’ Star Wars Prequels.
As it stands right now, between several independent movies, Disney, Fox, and New Line Cinema, there are over fifty live action comic book films based on Marvel movies alone, there are plenty to choose from for just about every type of movie taste out there.

Tony Stark is an industrialist and loves living life and selling arms to the highest bidder. But the lord of war has his world upended when he's held hostage by insurgents and forced to build them a super missile. He instead builds a crude suit of armor to help him escape. Once out he renounces building weapons which doesn't sit well with his business partner, who secretly was behind the kidnapping.

Bruce Banner has been living in hiding and doing all he can to learn how to control his anger and therefore, the giant green rage monster within. His ex, Betty and a mysterious Mr. Blue have been doing all they can to assist Banner, but Betty’s dad, General Thunderbolt Ross has also been hunting Banner down alongside Emil Blonsky who was also injected with the serum, but has become and abomination instead.

Several of the Marvel movies, still to even this day involve enemies who have been holding deep seated anger for past transgressions. Iron Man 2 had not one, but two of these villains. Justin Hammer was gunning to for Tony Stark in the business world. But as Iron Man, he had to also face down Ivan Vanko, who had created his own suit of armor.

The proud Asgardian prince, Thor is a little proud. After breaking a long-held truce, Odin banishes him to Earth along with his hammer, Mjolnir which he enchants so only someone who worthy can wield it. On Earth, he meets Jane Foster who is trying to prove the existence of other worlds while on Asgard, Thor’s mischievous brother Loki ascends to the throne and sends a destroyer after his own brother.

Instead he is given the chance to take part in an experiment that turns him into the ultimate soldier. The moment that Marvel maniacs had been waiting for for four years finally happened. The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembled do battle with themselves before coming together and taking on Thor’s adopted brother Loki, and an alien army in the MCU’s concluding chapter to Phase I of their film franchise, complete with big Thanos cameo.

Traumatized by the events of the Battle Of New York, Tony Stark builds an army of Iron Men. He is also investigating a group called the Ten Rings and their mysterious leader, the Mandarin. When an ancient foe of Odin’s, Malekith the Dark Elf returns to seek the Aether during the latest Convergence of the Nine Realms and use it to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Thor frees his brother, Loki, being imprisoned for his war crimes to help fight off the Dark Elves. With Jane infected by the Aether she is also brought to Asgard for her protection.

When Cap had to leave Bucky behind when fighting the Nazis, it haunted him. That ghost became a nightmare when Bucky had returned and was revealed to be the mythological Cold Warrior, the Winter Soldier. Under heavy brainwashing and constant thawing and unthawing, Bucky had committed some terrible crimes and his most recent one put him right in his old path’s crosshairs.

Earthling Peter Quill was abducted by aliens years ago and has been traversing the cosmos with a gang full of Ravagers ever since. The Avengers have cleaned up the remaining remnants of HYDRA. But Tony is still hellbent on keeping the entire world protected. Along with Bruce they create a sentient AI, Ultron. But the two Dr. Frankensteins created a mechanical monster instead. Ultron decided that the best way to protect the planet would be to wipe out all of its inhabitants, namely us.

The sins of the father…Odin had kept his destructive war mongering oldest kid Hela kept hidden from Thor and Loki. Now that he has passed on, she was able to return from exile and wreak havoc. The brothers inadvertently are hurled to Saakar, where Thor is forced into gladiatorial combat with a “friend from work,” and a former soldier of Asgard. The God of Thunder has to somehow convince all of these guys to escape and help stop Ragnarok.

Hank Pym and his daughter have been on the run since Scott violated the Sokovia accords. Despite Scott and Hope’s budding romance and the trio trying to get back into the Quantum Realm to hopefully find Janet Van Dyne, Hank and Hope have cut ties with Scott. But when they open a doorway to the Realm, Hope kidnaps Scott from house arrest to help them save her mother.

A year before Neo kicked ass in a trench coat and ten years before Iron Man came flying through the screen, Wesley Snipes’ Blade was the first real successful Marvel movie, even predating Spidey and the X-Men. The Daywalker has been gunning for Deacon Frost who has inserted himself as the leader of the Vampire race and wants to become their god, La Magra.

After a supposed less than stellar first Fantastic Four film, the trailer for this movie - the Human Torch chasing the Silver Surfer through the skies got plenty of fans’ hopes (and expectations) way up. Harry Osborne is still seeking revenge for what Spider-Man did to his father. An escaped con, Flint Marko falls into a partial accelerator and can now manipulate sand. An alien substance crash lands and its symbiote tries to bond with Spider-Man before being rejected and finding Eddie Brock. That's a lot for any hero to take in, so why not throw trying to propose to Mary Jane completely out of led field too.

Blind lawyer Matt Murdock fights the little guy in the courtroom by day. He also happens to beat criminals to pulp by night as the superhero vigilante, Daredevil. He's been working to try and take the Kingpin down and he's hired the hit man, Bullseye to assassinate Nikolas Nachios. His daughter is Murdock’s love interest and an assassin herself, Elektra.
Watch or Skip X-Men 2: X-Men United (2003)?
Their belief structures on how to deal with the human race are vastly different, but when the entire mutant race is threatened by a megalomaniacal clandestine organization and a leader who has an ax to grind, Magneto, Xavier, and their respective followers have no choice but to come together with an uneasy alliance to save mutant kind in one of the best comic book movies ever.

As an undercover FBI agent Frank Castle takes down mob boss Howard Saint. In retaliation, Saint orders a hit on the entire family. But Frank survives the assault and wages a one man war as the Punisher against Saint and his entire operation and all of his known associates, including a massive brute known as the Russian.

In World War II Japan, Logan saved a young Japanese soldier when the bombs went off. Years later, Logan’s having nightmares about having to take care of Jean and the Japanese soldier is now an old man who is dying and has summoned for his friend, but not to say goodbye but to steal Logan’s mutant healing factor.

The belle of the ball at the moment, the Merc with a Mouth Deadpool finally got his moment in the sun in his own solo feature. Allowing Ryan Reynolds and his comedic chops to shine as DP, the mouthy mutant was experimented on and horrifically scarred in an effort to wake up his dormant mutant powers. Needless to say, he was a little miffed about it and hunted down Ajax to get revenge.

Sony’s attempt at creating a shared universe for Spider-Man, ala the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with casting Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man. The idea was to take our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and turn his backstory into a who-knows-how-many movies storyline. Here, the guy took on the Lizard and fell in love with Gwen Stacy.
Watch or Skip X-Men: First Class (2011)?
Instead of When Harry Met Sally it was when Charles Met Erik, as the X-Men franchise went back in time to the freewheelin’ sixties and fans got to see how Xavier and Magneto would go on to form the X-Men and avert World War III during the Cuban Missile crisis, and watch Erik completely go to the dark side, when he murders Sebastian Shaw, the mutant who tortured him years ago in the concentration camp.

(For now) Hugh Jackman had stated that Logan was his least stint as the Canucklehead, Wolverine. What a way to though! Based on the comic series, Old Man Logan, director James Mangold told “the last gunfighter” type of story that featured Logan caring for an Xavier who is losing his mind when a young clone of his own falls into his protection.

One of the most popular X-Men storylines of all time is finally adapted for the big screen when Kitty Pryde uses her powers to hurl Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to the seventies to try and stop Mystique from getting caught during an assassination attempt and being the basis for the mutant hunting Sentinels. But first he has to convince a young Charles Xavier that his dream is alive and well.

In the midst of this Marvel Mayhem, another super team was adapted for film, but as a really cool kids’ movie. Much like other Disney flicks, Big Hero 6 is a heart-warming adventure of Hiro Hamada, a robotics prodigy grieving over the loss of his brother. Hiro finishes his brother’s invention, Baymax, and uses it to help find the one who took his brother's life, alongside all of their engineer friends, becoming real life superheroes in the process.
