Watching a movie is always a good idea, regardless of whether we are bored, sick, or in the company of someone that we like. As such, it makes perfect sense that most of us have watched hundreds, if not thousands, of movies throughout the course of our lives.
However, even if we are "movieholics" (i.e., someone obsessed with movies), we don't need to worry about running out of films to watch. There are so many films out there that we probably couldn't watch all of them even if we tried our hardest.
We can choose from films that are old (think those classic black and white movies that always make us nostalgic) or films that are new. Furthermore, each year Hollywood treats us to at least a couple dozen new movies that star our favorite actors. When it comes to movies, the possibilities are endless!
Of course, things get slightly more complex when we try to choose a movie that neither we nor our friends have seen. Those who have found themselves in this situation know that it's an impossible task. The films that we've seen, our friends haven't. And the films that they've seen, we haven't. Perhaps we are just not compatible with our friends? Because believe it or not, movie preferences (or even the movies that people choose to watch) can tell us a lot about people, and even their sign. That's exactly what we'll be doing in this quiz!
Aquaman
Aquaman is a superhero film that came out last year, in 2018. As is probably obvious from the movie title alone, the plot is based on Aquaman, a DC Comics character. This film, which was directed by James Wan, is the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe. Jason Momoa (best known for his role of Khal Drogo in the famous fantasy TV series Game of Thrones) was cast as the lead character whereas Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, and Willem Defoe (among other actors) were cast in supporting roles according to Wikipedia.
The Holiday
Iris (played by Kate Winslet) is a depressed woman who lives in England. She has recently gone through a break-up. Amanda (portrayed by Cameron Diaz) is just as unlucky in love but resides in the U.S. The two women decide to escape the rut by swapping homes. Thus, Iris ends up in a Hollywood mansion whereas Amanda finds herself in a modest cottage in the countryside. Before long, both women meet handsome local men that distract them from their luckless love lives (Wikipedia). If you've seen The Holiday, you obviously know that the above description is its plot.
Fifty Shades of Grey
Fifty Shades of Grey was all everyone could talk about a few years ago (or, to be more specific, in 2015, which is when this movie came out). This film falls under the genre of romantic drama film. It was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and it starred Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as the lead characters. Actors such as Jennifer Ehle and Marcia Gay Harden appeared in supporting roles. The film chronicles the relationship between a college graduate named Anastasia Steele and a business magnate named Christian Grey (Wikipedia).
Juno
Ellen Page played the title character in Juno, a teenage girl who, after she finds herself pregnant, decides to find a good home for her unborn baby. She settles on an unsuccessful rock star and his wife but things get complicated when the rock star starts hitting on Juno, putting not only his marriage but also the whole adoption process at risk. This enthralling film, which was released in 2007, falls under the genre of independent coming-of-age teen comedy (Wikipedia).
Call Me by Your Name
Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Esther Garrel, Michael Stuhlbarg, Victoire Du Bois, and Amira Casar are just some of the actors that starred in Call Me by Your Name, a coming-of-age romantic drama that was released two years ago, back in 2017. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, this movie was based on a novel of the same name that was written by André Aciman. Set in northern Italy in the 1980s, the film explores the relationship between two young men: the 17-years-old Elio Perlman and the 24-year-old graduate Oliver (Wikipedia).
Little Miss Sunshine
Little Miss Sunshine falls under the genre of comedy-drama road film. It came out more than a decade ago, all the way back in 2006. According to Wikipedia, it was the directorial debut of the wife-husband team of Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton. The plot of this feel-good movie focuses on the members of the Hoover family who all pile into a VW bus and make their way down to California to support their daughter who is determined to win the Little Miss Sunshine Contest.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Alexis Bledel, Blake Lively, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn were all featured in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, a comedy-drama film that came out all the way back in 2005. The plot focuses on four best friends who in the past have spent all of their summers together. However, this time they must separate. Nonetheless, everywhere they go they are connected via a pair of jeans that they all take turns wearing. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is the first installment in the franchise, according to Wikipedia. A sequel to it came out in 2008 and a third film is currently in development.
Game Night
Game Night is a black comedy thriller film that hit the cinemas last year, in 2018. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, it starred a great number of talented Hollywood actors including Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Sharon Horgan, Billy Magnussen, Kylie Bunbury, Lamorne Morris, Jesse Plemons, Kyle Chandler, and Michael C. Hall. The movie follows a gang of friends whose game night goes wrong after one of them is whisked away by thieves. According to Wikipedia, this film was both a commercial and critical success.
50 First Dates
Adam Sandler plays the role of Henry in this movie, a man who spends most of his time going on numerous dates that go nowhere. He's pretty happy with his bachelor life until he meets Lucy (portrayed by Drew Barrymore), a woman who has short-term memory loss. Henry can't help but fall in love with her. But will he manage to convince her that he is the one? And will her memory loss stand in the way of their happiness? If you've seen this movie, you probably know the answer to both questions!
Anna Karenina
Pretty much every classic novel has been turned into a movie, and Anna Karenina is no exception. Based on the world-famous Leo Tolstoy novel of the same name, Anna Karenina was released more than five years ago, back in 2012. It falls under the genre of historical romantic drama film. Keira Knightley was cast as the female lead character, Anna Karenina, who is married but who nonetheless falls in love with another man (officer Count Vronsky who was portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson according to Wikipedia).
Hairspray
If you're into musical romantic comedies then you have without a doubt seen Hairspray. Based on a Broadway musical of the same name that came out in 2002 which in turn was inspired by a 1980's comedy film of the same name, this movie was released in 2007. Its cast consisted of such skilled actors as Nikki Blonsky, Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Amanda Bynes, Zac Efron, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, James Marsden, Brittany Snow, Elijah Kelley, and Allison Janney according to Wikipedia.
Black Swan
Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder, and Barbara Hershey are some of the actors that you might have recognized in this movie if you've seen it. Black Swan is a psychological thriller movie that was directed by Darren Aronofsky. It came out almost 10 years ago (time flies!), in 2010. The film focuses on the prestigious New York City Ballet company, and in particular, on two ballerinas who compete for the role of the Black Swan in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake (Wikipedia).
Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane is one of those classic old movies that everyone should see at least once in their lives. It was released more than half a century ago, all the way back in 1941. It falls under the genre of mystery drama film. Orson Welles not only co-wrote, produced, and directed this movie but also starred in it too. Of course, he was not the only actor to make an appearance in it. Other actors such as Joseph Cotten, Everett Sloane, Dorothy Comingore, George Coulouris, and Ray Collins also got plenty of screen time (Wikipedia).
Jurassic World
Jurassic World is the fourth installment in the very popular Jurassic Park film franchise. According to Wikipedia, it is also the first movie in the planned Jurassic World trilogy. This science fiction adventure film came out in 2015 and it starred Chris Pratt as the leading man. Other actors such as Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Ty Simpkins were cast in supporting roles. Set slightly more than 20 years after the events of Jurassic Park, Jurassic World also focuses on a rampant dinosaur who escapes a cloned dinosaur theme park.
Yes Man
Carl Allen, played by the funny actor Jim Carrey, is a pretty negative man who somehow ends up attending a self-help seminar that is supposed to teach him, and other attendants, the power of yes. Carl soon finds out that living life with a positive mindset is pretty amazing for it leads him to many great experiences and even a promotion at work. However, before long it becomes apparent that too much of anything is not good. When practiced in excess, positive thinking can actually cause more harm than good (Wikipedia)!
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Pretty much everyone has seen Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (or Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as it is known elsewhere in the world). Based on a magical novel of the same name that was written by the talented author J. K. Rowling, this movie tells the story of a young boy who is taken aback when he is told that he is a wizard. He soon leaves the home of his mean aunt and uncle and embarks on the biggest adventure of his life. This movie made stars out of such actors as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint (Wikipedia).
Ghost Ship
Steve Beck directed this thriller film that was released more than 15 years ago, back in 2002. The film's ensemble cast consisted of Gabriel Byrne, Ron Eldard, Julianna Margulies, Isaiah Washington, Desmond Harrington, and Karl Urban. The plot of this movie centers on a marine salvage crew who come across a mysterious ocean liner in the Bering Sea that supposedly disappeared in the early 1960s. The film did well at the box office but failed to impress film critics (Wikipedia).
Bring It On: All or Nothing
Bring It On: All or Nothing is a cheerleading film that was released in 2006. According to Wikipedia, it is the third installment in the Bring It On movie franchise. Bring It On: All Or Nothing features a similar plot (i.e., competing cheerleading teams) as the two other movies. However, there are no canonical references or recurring cast members. Those who have seen this movie are probably well aware that Hayden Panettiere, Marcy Rylan, Solange Knowles, Gus Carr, Giovonnie Samuels, Cindy Chiu, and Francia Raisa all starred in it.
Atonement
Cecilia Tallis, played by Keira Knightley, and Robbie Turner, portrayed by James McAvoy, are in love. However, their happiness is short-lived: Cecilia's jealous younger sister Briony, played by Saoirse Ronan, constructs a lie that tears the two lovers apart. However, not all is lost: Cecilia and Robbie meet once more during World War II. Joe Wright directed this romantic war drama film that came out in 2007. According to Wikipedia, Atonement was a commercial success. Critics liked it too and thus gave it favorable reviews.
No Country for Old Men
No Country for Old Men is a neo-Western crime thriller film that was directed by the talented Coen brothers. It came out in 2007 and it starred Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin among others. According to Wikipedia, this outstanding movie won as many as four Academy Awards. That is not surprising seeing how many film critics deem No Country for Old Men to be not only Coen brothers' masterpiece but also one of the best films ever made.
The Devil Wears Prada
Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci, and Adrian Grenier are some of the actors that were featured in The Devil Wears Prada, a comedy-drama film that hit the cinemas in 2006. Directed by David Frankel, the plot of this movie was based on a novel of the same name that was written by Lauren Weisberger. The film centers on Andy, a college graduate who can't believe her luck when she lands a job at the prestigious Runway magazine. But being an assistant to a demanding editor proves tougher than she thought (Wikipedia).
Freaky Friday
Freaky Friday falls under the genre of fantasy comedy film. Directed by Mark Waters, it starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as the lead characters, a mother and a daughter who can't understand one another due to their age difference. But then their bodies are mysteriously switched as a result of a magical fortune cookie, and their attitude towards one another changes for the better. Eastern Promises is a 2007 gangster film. It was directed by David Cronenberg and it starred Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Sinéad Cusack. According to WIkipedia, the plot of this film focuses on a woman named Anna who works as a midwife. After she delivers the baby of a teenager who passes away in childbirth, she learns about a secret trafficking ring. In an attempt to keep the baby safe, she ends up enmeshed deeper and deeper into the criminal world.
Never Let Me Go
Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy are three best friends who grow up together at a boarding school in England's idyllic countryside. However, when they leave school the true purpose of their existence is revealed to them. Their friendship is threatened as feelings of jealousy, love, and betrayal bubble to the surface. This dystopian romantic drama film was released exactly nine years ago, back in 2010. Like so many other movies, it was also based on a novel of the same name (that was written by Kazuo Ishiguro according to Wikipedia).
The Bling Ring
This 2013 satirical crime film featured an ensemble cast led by Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, and Claire Julien. Unlike most movies, this film was not based on a novel. Nonetheless, it was still inspired by the written word, and to be more specific, by an article in a 2010 issue of Vanity Fair. The plot of this movie centers on a gang of teenagers who are obsessed with fame and spend their spare time breaking into the homes of celebrities who are out of town (Wikipedia).
Being John Malkovich
Cameron Diaz, John Cusack, Orson Bean, Catherine Keener, Mary Kay Place, and John Malkovich were all cast in Being John Malkovich, a fantasy comedy-drama movie that was directed by Spike Jonze. This film, which hit the cinemas in 1999, was actually Jonze's feature film debut. The plot of this strange cult comedy centers on Craig Schwartz, an unemployed puppeteer who takes a job as a filing clerk and comes across a mysterious portal that leads him to the mind of John Malkovich (Wikipedia).

In Drive, Ryan Gosling played the role of an unnamed stunt driver in Hollywood who also works as a getaway driver. He spent his life partying and seeing numerous different women. Now that he celebrates his 65th birthday however he is finally able to see the city's beauty in all its glory. Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, and Carlo Buccirosso were some of the actors that starred in this visually stunning film (Wikipedia).
Rear Window
Rear Window is one of the oldest movies on this quiz. It came out more than 60 years ago, back in 1954. It falls under the genre of technicolor mystery thriller film. Jordan, Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker. This movie focuses on a man named T'Challa who has to return to his native land of Wakanda after his father passes away so as to ascend the throne (Wikipedia)

Leonardo DiCaprio played the role of Jay Gatsby, the lead character in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby is a poor man who becomes rich for the sole purpose of winning the heart of Daisy Buchanan, the girl that he is in love with. Carey Mulligan played the role of Daisy whereas Tobey Maguire was cast as Nick Carraway, the narrator and Gatsby's neighbor (as well as Daisy's cousin). Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jason Clarke served as the supporting characters (Wikipedia).

Remy is a rat whose greatest dream is to become a world-famous chef. In an effort to realize his goal he moves to Paris where a boy named Linguini tries to help him show off his culinary skills. At the same time, however, he has to stay in hiding (he is, after all, a rat!) According to Wikipedia, this computer-animated comedy film won an Academy Award in the category Best Animated Feature. In addition, it was later voted as one of the best motion pictures of the 21st century.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a fantasy swashbuckler film that came out more than 10 years ago, all the way back in 2003 (it ended up being the fourth highest-grossing film of the year). Directed by Gore Verbinski, it starred a large number of skilled Hollywood actors, including Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and Jonathan Pryce. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is the first installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, and Ciarán Hinds are just some of the actors that were cast in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a Cold War spy thriller movie. This movie was directed by Tomas Alfredson and it hit the cinemas back in 2011. Eighth Grade
If you're into recent movies then you have without a doubt seen Eighth Grade, a comedy-drama film that was released last year, in 2018. According to Wikipedia, this film was written and directed by Bo Burnham. In fact, this film was his directorial debut! In Eighth Grade, Elsie Fisher played the role of Kayla Day, an eighth-grader who has to get through her last week of classes before she graduates to high school. Kayla might have social anxiety, but that doesn't stop her from creating vlogs in which she gives others life advice.
Wedding Crashers
Wedding Crashers is a comedy film that hit the cinemas back in 2005. Its storyline focuses on two divorce mediators, Jeremy and John, who spend their free time crashing weddings. However, their bachelor days might be over: as they crash the wedding of Treasury William Cleary's daughter, John can't help but fall for one of the bridesmaids. According to Wikipedia, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn were cast as the lead characters in this movie whereas Rachel McAdams, Christopher Walken, Isla Fisher, Jane Seymour, and Bradley Cooper were cast in supporting roles.
Isle of Dogs
Wes Anderson is one talented (and quirky) man. His movies are always a feast for the eyes. As such, it comes as no surprise that he has such a large following. Isle of Dogs is Anderson's latest movie. It falls under the genre of stop-motion-animated science fiction adventure movie. It came out last year and it featured the voices of Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, and Ken Watanabe among others. The film is set in a dystopian future in which all dogs are banished to a far-away island after an outbreak of canine flu (Wikipedia).
Thelma & Louise
Ridley Scott directed the iconic Thelma & Louise. This road film was released almost 30 years ago, all the way back in 1991. It starred Geena Davis as Thelma and Susan Sarandon as Louise. Thelma and Louise are two best friends who decide to go on a road trip so as to get away from their stressful everyday lives. The trip doesn't go quite as planned however. Apart from Davis and Sarandon this movie also featured Brad Pitt and Harvey Keitel (Wikipedia).
The Reader
If you've seen The Reader then you probably know that it starred such talented actors as Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, David Kross, Lena Olin, and Bruno Ganz. You're also probably well aware that it falls under the genre of romantic drama film. Directed by Stephen Daldry, this movie focuses on the relationship between Michael Berg, a teenager, and Hanna Schmitz, a guard at a concentration camp. When she is called to court, Michael realizes that she is keeping a personal secret that could help her with her acquittal (Wikipedia).
Twilight
Twilight is the first installment in the once very famous Twilight Saga movie series. Like most films and film franchises, this one was also based on a novel series that was penned down by the skilled Stephenie Meyer. The plot of this movie focuses on a teenage girl named Bella who can't help but fall for a centuries-old vampire named Edward Cullen. The latter is also intrigued by her, initially because he can't read her mind. This film turned Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson into international stars (Wikipedia).
Revolutionary Road
Revolutionary Road is a 2008 romantic tragedy movie. It was based on a 1960's novel of the same name that was written by Richard Yates. Interestingly enough, this movie starred Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kathy Bates. If you know anything about movies then you are probably well aware that they once worked together on the iconic movie Titanic. Apart from Winslet, DiCaprio, and Bates, the film also featured actors such as Michael Shannon, Kathryn Hahn, and David Harbour (Wikipedia).
Walk the Line
James Mangold directed Walk the Line, a biographical drama romance film that was released in 2005. According to Wikipedia, Mangold and Gill Dennis wrote the screenplay, which they based on two autobiographies that were authored by none other than Johnny Cash himself, the man whom this movie is all about. Joaquin Phoenix played the lead role but other actors such as Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Patrick, and Dallas Roberts also got plenty of screen time. This movie was nominated for as many as five Oscars!
Sin City
Sin City is a crime anthology film that starred Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, Benicio del Toro, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, and Elijah Wood. It came out more than 10 years ago, back in 2005. This unique movie was written, directed, and produced by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. Indeed, much of the movie was based on Miller's graphic novel, also titled Sin City. The movie focuses on a large number of different characters and their stories, which means that the audience is never bored.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a fantasy romantic drama film that hit the cinemas in 2008. Directed by David Fincher, this movie starred Brad Pitt as the lead character and Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond, Taraji P. Henson, Jason Flemyng, Tilda Swinton, and Elias Koteas as supporting characters. According to Wikipedia, the storyline of this peculiar movie is somewhat based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story of the same name which he penned down sometime in the early 1920s.
Slumdog Millionaire
The drama film Slumdog Millionaire was released slightly more than 10 years ago, back in 2008. It was loosely based on a 2005 novel Q & A that was written by the author Vikas Swarup. The actor Dev Patel was cast as Jamal Malik in this movie, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who takes part in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He doesn't just compete in the game, he actually wins it, thanks to his outstanding memory and his childhood experiences (Wikipedia).
