Harry Potter is a fantasy book and movie franchise which was released in the 1990s and the 2000s. Harry Potter is the protagonist, and finds himself pulled into the magical world on the day he turns eleven. Hagrid shows up with a birthday cake and a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. From there, he learns the truth about of his past, including what really happened to his parents, and how he’s a hero in the wizarding world. During his first year he makes friends for the first time, named Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

Both of his best friends are in the same house at him -- Gryffindor. The school is divided into four houses depending on a witch/wizard’s personality. The sorting hat decides where the student will excel the most, or where they are most suited depending on their unique traits. For example, those placed in Gryffindor are believed to be brave and courageous, while those placed in Ravenclaw are believed to be knowledgeable and wise.

Once the sorting ceremony takes place, the witch and wizard will remain in that house for the next seven years, and compete against the other houses for the House Cup.

Harry Potter is a seven party fantasy series which is geared towards a young audience. The first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997, and the last The Deathly Hallows was published in 2007. There are many reasons a student at Hogwarts could get detention. Especially with Umbridge in charge, but one of the most common rules Harry, Hermione and Ron break is being out of bed past curfew. The Harry Potter novel series was turned into a film franchise in the early 2000s, and has a total of eight movies. The last movie was divided into two movies. Each movie follows the story line of each respective book, depicting the journey of Harry Potter and the return of the Dark Lord.

Quidditch is a beloved sport in Harry Potter. Not only is it played between the four different houses, but its a nation wide sport. There are many places in Hogwarts which are off limits to the students. They are usually closed for a good reason, such as in the first film part of the castle was restricted because of Fluffy the three headed dog. Platform 9 3/4 is the only way to access the Hogwarts Express. At the Kings Cross train station in London the platform is open only for a short amount of time. Witches and wizards run directly at a brick wall in between platform 9 and 10 to get on.

A Horcrux is an extremely powerful object which are only created by the darkest witches and wizards. Butterbeer is another iconic treat in the Harry Potter universe. It’s mostly seen being consumed while the group are visiting Hogsmeade. The beverage is believed to taste somewhat like butterscotch, although not nearly as sweet.

One of the first things Harry experiences in the wizarding world with Ron is the ample amount of treats on the Hogwarts Express. Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans are a staple treat among witches and wizards because they quite literally have every flavor, including many gross ones. Another fun treat is of course the Chocolate Frogs which come that come with trading cards.

Wands are quite unique not only in their makeup, but because of the fact that the wand chooses its witch or wizard. Some of the key ingredients that could be found in a wand include unicorn hair, a dragon heartstring, a phoenix feather, and Veela hair. The fact that a wand chooses its owner makes it so if a wizard takes another’s wand, it wont work fully.

Filch is the Caretaker of Hogwarts and is always the one roaming the school after dark making sure that no students are out of bed, and that the school is well protected. His cat, Mrs Norris also wanders Hogwarts at night and has followed Harry around when he’s been under his invisibility cloak.

There are certain laws in the wizarding world which must be followed. One of the major rules for the students of Hogwarts, and any other wizard schools is that underage witches and wizards are not able to perform magic outside of school until they reach the age of 17. There is however a special circumstance for wandless magic that occurs accidentally.

In addition to the Head of a Hogwarts House, each have two Prefects a male and a female) who are given additional responsibility, and it usually consists of ensuring other students from their house stay out of trouble. Students who are in their fifth year are chosen to be Prefects, and demonstrate a certain level of redeemable qualities.

The Chamber of Secrets was believed to be a myth for a long time, mostly because no one knew how to open it to verify if it was real or not. However, during the second film after students started to get petrified, a note was left on the wall stating the chamber had been opened.

Harry meets his first house elf right before he attends Hogwarts during his second year. Dobby, who was working for the Malfoy’s at the time had snuck into the Dursley house to warn Harry not to return to school. Hogsmeade is a little wizarding village not far from Hogwarts that the upper year students are allowed to visit with their parents or guardians permission. The Triwizard Tournament is a prestige event which was held every few years, and was reintroduced during Harry Potter’s fourth year. One of the best perks about being a Hogwarts student is receiving mail via owls. Harry is the only one out of the main group who has his own owl, Hedwig who collects and delivers all of his mail. The Hospital Wing in Hogwarts is run by Madam Pomfrey who takes care of students and staff who get injured on campus. Here is another example of a place on the Hogwarts ground which is off limits to the Hogwarts students. This one of course is a little more accessible for the brave students who don’t mind breaking the rules, being that there is no gate or guard to stop anyone from entering.

Snape was one of the resident professors at Hogwarts. He was the Head of the Slytherin house, and taught Potions. However, it was a known fact that Snape wanted to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He was always getting Harry into trouble, taking Gryffindor points whenever he wanted.

Dementors are probably one of the most fearsome creatures to exist in the Harry Potter world. They are mostly used as guards in Azkaban, for they have the capability to suck all of the happiness out of a witch or wizard. After Sirius had escaped, Dementors were brought onto Hogwarts grounds to guard the young children.

Here is another example of a magical creature who has unique powers. Harry is first introduced to Dumbledore's pet in the second movie Chamber of Secrets. Fawkes the Phoenix has two major abilities, the first being that his tears can be used to heal wounds. The second is that after he grows old he bursts into flames and is reborn in the ashes.

Only a select few witches and wizards are able to become an Animagus. When they are able to, they are meant to register with the Ministry much like McGonagall did. However, that’s not the case for everyone. For example, Sirius, James and Peter were all an Animagus but they kept it to themselves.

The Marauders Map is a magical creation that was created by Peter, Lupin, Sirius and James. The Dark Lord is the main antagonist of the Harry Potter franchise, where he was commonly referred to as "He Who Must Not Be Named." During his time at Hogwarts, he was known as Tom Riddle and even then there were many signs indicating he would become a dark witch. After the tragedy at the Potter residence, Voldemort had gone into hiding for over a decade.

This is a magical device which for the most part is not permitted to be used by witches or wizards. To go back and time and alter the course of actions is against the law. Hermione manages to get her hands on a Time-Turner, but it was given to her so she could attend more classes during the school year.

The Deathly Hallows consist of three magical objects given to a group of brothers. Its a story that Hermione shares with the group about the Peverell brothers. It is revealed that the first brother received the Elder Wand; the second brother received the Resurrection Stone; and the third brother received the Invisibility Cloak.

Here is another example of a magical creature that exists in the wizarding world. They are a winged horse which are only visible to a witch or wizard who have unfortunately witnessed someone lose their life. The Ministry of Magic is basically the government of witches and wizards in England. There are a number of different departments which handle specific parts of wizarding laws. For example, Ron’s father worked in the "Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office." After Harry had illegally used underage magic he was called to the Ministry for a hearing.

Harry Potter is filled with so many different spells that a witch and wizard can learn. The Unforgivable Curses are known to be the most powerful spells, and are quite illegal to use. The Polyjuice Potion is used on numerous occasions during the Harry Potter franchise. The first time it is used is with Harry, Ron, and Hermione during their second year. Hermione brews the potion so they could sneak into the Slytherin common room. Another instance is when Professor Moody uses it to transport Harry to the Burrow undetected.
