With 20 feature films to date as well as a number of TV and streaming series, the MCU has given us an impressive number of women to (forgive the pun) marvel over throughout the last decade.
While Black Widow may have been the first and most prominent female hero throughout the series, plenty of other strong characters have popped up on the big and small screen ever since. And with Wonder Woman grossing over $800 million for the DCEU last year, we’re sure that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be following suit in the upcoming years by turning out more female-heavy superhero movies.
For instance, Captain Marvel is already well in the works — as it will actually be the next MCU movie to hit theaters when it debuts in March of next year. And it looks like Black Widow will finally be getting the long overdue solo-movie that she deserves as well.
Of course, not ever supporting female character warrants a standalone project. But that doesn’t mean that many of them still don’t hold a fond place in our hearts.
So let’s take a look back at some of the most beautiful and impressive female MCU characters up until now and uncover the perfect superhero wife!
Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful characters to ever appear in the MCU. She was even capable of destroying one of the Infinity Stones, which may be the reason that Thanos destroyed her along with half of the universe. But do you think she'd make wife material as much as Vision did?
Gamora
In the comics, Gamora is described as the greatest assassin in the universe. However, her powers seem to have been massively nerfed in the movies. But that still doesn’t mean she’s not a formidable fighter or strategist. So are you just as smitten with Gamora as Peter Quill came to be?
The Wasp
Though she previously appeared in 2016’s Ant-Man, the Wasp finally had her time in the latest installment of the series — which happened to be the most recent Marvel movie to be released. So would you be as willing to settle down with Hope as Scott Lang is? Or is she simply not your type?
Valkyrie
Valkyrie is one of those characters who does not do anything she doesn’t want to. Therefore, she may not be the most flexible person in a relationship. She was also totally MIA when Thor needed her most in Infinity War. But we’re guessing that was because she was helping protect the Asgardian race.
Nakia
Much like Valkyrie, Nakia is another strong female character who goes by the beat of her own drum. Despite T’Challa wanting her to return to Wakanda and be by her side, she is unwilling to give up her position as one of the War Dogs — a group that travels the world and protects others.
Peggy Carter
After first showing up in Captain America: The First Avengers, Peggy Carter would go on to get her own TV series. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after just two seasons due to low ratings. But we did get to say a proper goodbye to the character later in the MCU proper.
Mantis
With her ability to manipulate emotions, Mantis would make for an unusual partner for sure. The character first appeared in the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie, where she helped Peter Quill and the others defeat the evil Ego. But do you think this empathic alien would be ideal wife material?
Jane Foster
Along with Betty Ross, Jane Foster is another one of the MCU love interests who seems to have fallen by the wayside. After being the God of Thunder’s primary romantic interest throughout the first two Thor movies, the last we heard of her was in Thor: Ragnarok, where she was supposedly the one who broke things off.
Hela
Hela does not seem like the type of MCU character who would be interested in a husband. Throughout her short time in the series, she is pretty much set on one thing: taking control of Asgard and all of its citizens. Therefore, you’d have to be just as power-hungry to think Hela would make a good wife.
Maria Hill
Though Agent Maria Hill hasn’t played a huge role in the movies, she’s consistently been in the backdrop — not to mention that she’s also popped up in the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She’s also expected to play a role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, despite being one of the characters who was destroyed by Thanos.
Sif
Lady Sif played a big role in the first two Thor movies, where she served as an ally to the God of Thunder — helping him defeat both Loki and the Dark Elves. However, actress Jaime Alexander sadly did not get a chance to star in Ragnarok due to a scheduling conflict.
Jessica Jones
Portrayed by Krysten Ritter, Jessica Jones is the main character on one of the Marvel/ Netflix TV shows who has also gone on to pop up in The Defenders. She is a private eye located in New York City, who tries to keep using her powers to a minimum at the start of the series as to go unnoticed.
Sharon Carter
Sharon Carter was first introduced as Steve Rogers’ “neighbor” — though she was actually an undercover agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. assigned to watch over Captain America by Nick Fury. Cap eventually comes to discover her as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as the great niece of his old love interest, Peggy.
Black Widow
Beginning with Iron Man 2, Black Widow has popped up in six MCU movies to date — making her one of the most prominent female characters in the series. She is already set to appear in Avengers 4 next year, as well as a standalone Black Widow movie. But when that will be released is still anyone's guess.
May Parker
With each reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, May Parker continues to get younger and younger. In both Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, she was portrayed by Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei, who is already set to reprise her role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. So would you be happy to be her husband?
Pepper Potts
While many of the early relationships in the MCU have been abandoned — including Thor and Jane Foster, and Bruce Banner and Betty Ross — the relationship between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts is still going strong. At least, it was until Thanos’ Black Order strolled onto the scene and mucked everything up.
Christine Everhart
Christine Everhart appeared in the first two Iron Man movies, where she was a reporter trying to get a story out of Tony Stark when she couldn’t help falling for the billionaire's charm and good looks. She’s portrayed by actress Leslie Bibb, who more recently appeared in this year’s Tag.
Betty Ross
Betty Ross appeared in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, where she served as the complicated love interest of Bruce Banner. Because Bruce/ the Hulk were eventually recast, this character seems all but forgotten. Though her father, General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, has gone on to appear in subsequent films. So what happened to Betty?
Lorraine
The character of Lorraine only appeared very briefly in Captain America: The First Avenger. But for those who are fans of Game of Thrones, that might have taken better note of the character upon rewatching the film, as she is portrayed by Natalie Dormer, who went on to play Margaery Tyrell in the HBO fantasy series.
Liz Toomes
Liz Toomes is the primary love interest of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Though Peter is a few years younger than her, Liz agrees to go with him to the Homecoming Dance. But things become infinitely more complicated when the Vulture — Spider-Man’s enemy — is revealed to be Liz’s father. But would you tried to make it work anyway?
Maya Hansen
Maya Hansen first appeared in Iron Man 3, where she is shown in a flashback befriending Tony Stark. However, in the present, she has taken up work alongside Aldrich Killian, an adversary of Stark’s who is working on his Extremis project. Unfortunately, when she seeks out Tony for help, she ends up losing her life.
Quake
An Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. regular, Quake — also known as Daisy ‘Skye’ Johnson — is a secret agent and an expert computer hacker. She is also an Inhuman with the power to manipulate vibrations, giving her the ability to even conjure up earthquakes — just as her name implies. She is portrayed by Chloe Bennet, who has appeared in 110 episodes so far.
Christine Palmer
Much like Dr. Stephen Strange, Christine Palmer was a surgeon working at Metro-General Hospital who had a relationship with Strange before breaking things off. She later comes to learn of his supernatural abilities and ends up saving his life on the operating table at the end of the first film. Wouldn’t that be reason enough to reignite the romance?
The Ancient One
The Ancient One would make a very unusual partner indeed. The character was undoubtedly one of the most powerful Earth-bound warriors in the MCU, who had lived an impressively long life before passing away at around 700 years old. But do you think being married to this Sorcerer Supreme would have been worth it for the experience alone?
Darcy Lewis
An assistant of Jane Foster, Darcy Lewis appeared in the first two Thor films, where she largely serves as the stories comic relief. She is portrayed by actress Kat Dennings, who is best known for playing one of the lead characters on 2 Broke Girls. But would you like her to pop up again in the MCU?
Michelle Jones
Michelle Jones — also known as M.J. — is a friend of Peter Parker’s throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming, even if she’s not exactly the most social student at the Midtown School of Science and Technology. After Peter and Liz break things off, it’s looking like M.J. is being set up to be Peter’s next big love interest.
Frigga
The former Queen of Asgard, Frigga was the wife of Odin and the mother of Thor and Loki. She was known for being extremely kind-hearted and protective of her people. She even ended up sacrificing herself to save Jane. So even if she’s not the flashiest MCU character, don’t you think she’d make a great wife?
Laura Barton
If you were wondering where Hawkeye was throughout the events of Avengers: Infinity War, look no further than Laura Barton — Hawkeye’s wife. The character first appeared in Age of Ultron, where she helps shelter the Avengers when they want to remain hidden, and it looks like Hawkeye has since returned to his life living off the grid.
Helen Cho
Though she only appeared briefly in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Helen Cho is actually responsible for helping create Vision — one of the most powerful of all the Avengers. Helen is one of the best geneticists in all of the world, who is brought to Stark Tower to help save Hawkeye’s life.
Nebula
Similar to Loki, Nebula is one of the more villainous MCU characters who has enjoyed a dynamic arc throughout the movies. Now that her adopted sister Gamora has met her demise, we’re thinking that Nebula will play a vital role in defeating Thanos and restoring life in the universe. Though we’re still not sure that she'd make the best wife.
Ayesha
Though she only appeared sporadically in the second Guardians of the Galaxy film, it’s looking like Ayesha will play a much bigger role in the third outing. After all, she is the creator of Adam Warlock — a major character from Marvel comics. But whether Ayesha will be pure evil or have some redemptive qualities has yet to be seen.
Meredith Quill
The mother of Peter Quill, Meredith was a human who ended up falling in love with Ego. While she knew Ego wasn’t exactly human, clearly she didn’t know the kind of megalomaniacal monster he was deep down — as Ego who was eventually the one to give her cancer, resulting in her departure.
Shuri
One of the smartest Earth-bound characters in the MCU, Shuri is a tech genius and the head of the Wakanda Design Group. She also happens to be T’Challa’s sister, making her the Princess of Wakanda. She is portrayed by Letitia Wright, who is slated to appear in next year’s Avengers 4.
Captain Marvel
Though we haven’t yet gotten a chance to see Captain Marvel up on the big screen, anyone who’s a fan of the franchise knows that she’ll be the star of the next Marvel movies — as well as one of the strongest characters introduced into the series to date. She will be portrayed by Brie Larson.
Melinda May
One of the main characters of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Melinda May is an accomplished pilot who went under the codename “The Cavalry.” She is a close friend of Agent Coulson and the one responsible for discovering the secret behind his resurrection. She’s played by Ming-Na Wen, who has appeared in over 100 episodes of the series.
Okoye
Portrayed by Danai Gurira — who is best known for playing Michonne on the massively popular AMC zombie epic — Okoye is one of the most formidable fighters in Black Panther. She is the general of the Wakanda army, who helps T’Challa defeat Erik Killmonger. She also stands with the Avengers in their fight against Thanos.
Medusa
One of the more disappointing entries into the MCU, Marvel’s Inhumans only ran for eight episodes on ABC before the series was swiftly canceled. Here, actress Serinda Swan portrayed Medusa, one of the main characters of the show, who is able to manipulate her hair. She is also the wife of fellow Inhuman Black Bolt.
Jemma Simmons
Portrayed by Elizabeth Henstridge, Jemma Simmons is one of the main characters on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., who has appeared in nearly every episode of the series. Her area of expertise is biochemistry, and she has worked closely with Agent Coulson to defeat a number of world-ending threats. She even helped rebuild the organization following the HYDRA Uprising.
Crystal
The younger sister of Queen Medusa, Crystalia ‘Crystal’ Amaquelin is a fellow Inhuman whose powers include manipulation of the elements, along with other forms of matter manipulation. On Attilan, she holds the rank of Princess, though she is eventually brought to Earth where she must learn to co-exist with the humans.
Karen Page
At the start of Daredevil, Karen Page is the secretary at Matt Murdock's law firm in New York City. However, she eventually takes up work at the New York Bulletin, where she serves as an ally to Frank Castle before she is taken by one of Castle’s enemies. She has since learned that both Castle and Murdock work as vigilantes.
Trish Walker
The best friend of Jessica Jones, Trish Walker also fought to overcome a traumatic past and as a result, she helps Jessica take down Kilgrave. Trish is portrayed by actress Rachel Taylor, who has appeared in both seasons of Jessica Jones, along with popping up in Luke Cage and The Defenders.
Misty Knight
One of the main characters of Luke Cage, Misty Knight is a New York City detective who finds herself befriending the eponymous hero despite her superiors wishes. She has helped take down both Cottonmouth and the Hand, resulting in the loss of her arm. However, just like in the comics, the character has since been fitted with a bionic arm.
Carina
Carina may have done a foolish thing when she tried to wield the Infinity Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy. But considering that she was beholden to the Collector, can you really blame her for wanting to obtain freedom by any means necessary? The character was portrayed by English actress Ophelia Lovibond.
Mariah Dillard
One of the primary antagonists of Luke Cage, Mariah Dillard — later known as Black Mariah — was a Madam Councilwoman in New York City. However, she is slowly dragged down into a life of crime, leading to her becoming the crime lord of all of Harlem. She eventually meets her demise at the hands of her own daughter.
Dinah Madani
One of the main characters of Netflix’s The Punisher, Dinah Madani is a Homeland Security agent who is doggedly researching the mysterious demise of her former partner. This leads her on a crash course with Frank Castle, who is on his own tormented trail of revenge. She is portrayed by English actress Amber Rose Revah.
Irani Rael
Irani Rael is the leader of the elite Nova Corps — a police force that watches over the Nova Empire. Being the highest ranking officer, Irani also holds the title of Nova Prime. We’ve seen her aid the Guardians in defeating Ronan the Accuser, but despite her “alive” status, she still allowed Thanos to make away with the Power Stone.
Colleen Wing
A former ally of The Hand, Colleen Wing eventually broke ties with the enemy organization in favor of aiding Iron Fist. She has since played a vital role in taking down the ninja clan. Colleen also helped Misty Knight after the loss of her arm, bringing her a bionic replacement and helping her train with it.
Ramonda
The Queen Mother of Wakanda, Ramonda is the mother of T’Challa, who stood by her son even when Erik Killmonger won rightful control over their country. She is portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actress Angela Basset, who is set to reprise the character in the upcoming Avengers 4. So would this devout and caring woman make an ideal wife?
Ellen Brandt
After Aldrich Killian launched his Extremis project, he sought out Ellen Brandt, a former member of the Army who had lost part of her arm in combat. She is able to regrow the limb, but it comes at a great cost. Ellen becomes an enemy of Iron Man, resulting in her demise at the end of Iron Man 3.
Jeri Hogarth
An ally to the vigilantes in the Marvel/ Netflix shows, Jeri Hogarth is an attorney who originally helped Jessica Jones bring Kilgrave to justice. She has also appeared in Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, where she is portrayed by actress Carrie-Ann Moss, who is probably best known for playing Trinity in The Matrix series.
