Is your apartment big enough to house a swath of people, or do you have a house? If not, it may be tough to find a location suitable for a party without dumping a bunch of cash on the ordeal.
When does the party start?
When are people coming in? "Whenever" is an acceptable response, especially if you're only expecting your good friends to come over in the afternoon and the rest of the crowd to start arriving in the evening. When should you start expecting people?
What's on tap?
What is everyone drinking? Is there plenty of variety or is the list a little short? Is there a little something for everyone or is there a lot of one thing for most? What is the one thing guests can count on never running out?
What is everyone bringing?
Is every guest in charge of bringing a little something to the party? Is it a tasty morsel to share with the group, something to mix into a drink, or maybe just enthusiasm for the party is all that's required?
What is the age range?
Is this a party people can bring their kids to? Does everyone feel welcome, young and old? Is it more of a party for the young? Having high schoolers around always complicates things, but they want to party as much as anyone.
Pick an ongoing activity.
What can everyone partake in while enjoying the last night of the year? Some like a calm gathering with board games and light conversation. Some would rather crank the volume up and turn the dance floor up to 11, forget any other activities.
Pick a theme.
What is the theme to capture the imagination of the crowd, and get everyone excited for your party in particular. Say there is a party at every house on your block. Why should people choose your party over the others?
Pick a color scheme.
What will you be decking the halls with 6 days after Christmas? Hopefully not the leftover red and green. Do you have an eye for design and the need to get the house set up to bring out the best of the festivities?
Who is on the invite list?
Does only a certain group of people make the cut? Is it a myriad gathering of friends and family? Is it a group of everyone who may be interested in a certain theme or activity? How will you go about picking who to invite?
How will you invite people?
Will you be sending out nice, old-fashioned invitations or will Facebook be taking the wheel? How will people know where and when it is, and most importantly get excited enough to go? Getting people to show up is half the battle.
Who's not invited?
Is there someone that is just going to cause havoc? Are there people who won't get along with the rest, or who might sap the energy of the party? Is there someone who just cannot be allowed on the premises of the party?
Who is the guest of honor?
Chances are there is no official guest of honor, but who would the party just not be the same without? Is there someone who came a long way to attend, or someone that you would like to introduce to all of the guests?
What's on the menu?
Is there a large selection of the sweet and the savory, the nutritious and the scrumptious? If every guest is coming in with something different, there will be a nice array of food options, but that might be asking too much.
Who's performing?
Do you have your friend's band up on stage? Is the stage just a free for all run rampant with the good and the bad? Do you have a DJ mixing the night together? Is there a big ticket band arriving to play?
Pick a New Year's tradition.
What is one thing that has lasted over the years which you would like to bring into this New Year's party? Is there a single tradition that stands out among the rest which you would like to highlight at this event?
How will you watch the fireworks?
Are the fireworks a big part of the event, or will they just be going on in the background? Some people love fireworks, especially if they can set them off themselves. Others want nothing to do with the near-constant explosions.
What gets released at midnight?
Is confetti falling from the ceiling when the big hour hits? Are fireworks being sent up into the sky? Can you afford enough champagne, or something that looks like it? What is being released as we wave goodbye to December and a brand new year gets ushered in?
How late does the party go?
When do you start politely nudging people to head home? Is there a point when you toss some blankets on the couch and announce that it's quiet time? Some parties roll on for days, but others end right around midnight.
Choose a motto.
Where are you coming from when you get the party going? Sometimes it's all about tossing your insecurities out the window and having a good time. Other times, it's more about being a responsible host and looking after everyone. What's your number one?
Pick an hors d'oeuvre.
What is a tasty dish that just needs to be there in order for New Year's to be the best it can be? Is there a family recipe, a tradition among friends, or maybe a set of tastes you discovered on your own?
What's for New Year's brunch?
What is everyone having for their first meal of the year? There is the odd but tasty mix of waffles and fried chicken, or the delicious offering of fresh muffins. There's also cereal, but who is going to eat cereal for their first meal of the year?
Pick a dress code.
As they say, no shirt no shoes and you still get service. Is that the case at your New Year's party? Most parties don't hand out instructions on what to wear, unless they are formal events or clothing is optional. Either or.

What is a good game to introduce to the crowd? Some are tamer than others. Some are just plain scandalous. There's a little bit of everything. What is the right game for the crowd at your own New Year's party?
What music is playing?
It's impossible to satisfy the musical taste of a whole crowd of people, but what are you going to put on in order to capture the perfect mood? Is there a certain flavor you want to bring to life? What is a good vibe to play?
What will you do if someone spills wine on the carpet?
When a stain sets on the carpet and the mood changes to shock and shame, the whole party halts. Obviously you don't want anything happening to the carpet, but how do you mediate this situation and make sure everyone still feels welcome?

Is there someone ushering people in as they arrive? Who makes everyone feel welcome as they come in from the cold one by one? Is it a person, a statue, a sign, or whoever happens to hear the doorbell ring?
What's the big event?
Is there something going on during the night of the 31st that has everyone excited? What do you have planned for the big moment, that being the other moment besides midnight? What will be the last event of the year?
What is the budget?
Are you going to sell a kidney to make this party happen? Sometimes it's tempting to buy neat party accessories like chocolate fountains and disco balls, but what is actually in your budget for the evening, at least so far as the quiz is concerned?
What's going on in here?
What is happening behind closed doors? Is it a scandal of scandals, something that could scar the eyes of anyone who accidentally barged in? Is it just something so embarrassing that it simply cannot be done under the public eye?
What will you do if someone breaks a glass?
Certain dishes contain memories. Fine glasses are often only brought out on special occasions, and come in perfectly matching sets. There is no replacing a single glass. How do you handle this happening knowing there is no replacing the glass you lost?
How will you avoid noise complaints?
Sometimes even the tamest parties get visits from the police or calls from the apartment management. No one wants a rude awakening like that, but is it worth sacrificing the chance to have a good time in order to keep the complaints to a minimum?
How will you make sure there's enough for everyone?
Running out of food or drinks is not great for parties. Even if everyone has had a share of snacks, an empty snack table is hardly inviting. How do you make sure that this nightmare never actually come to pass?
Pick a gift for your guests.
Does every guest have something to take home from the party, or perhaps something to heighten their enjoyment as the event goes on? Which of these items sounds like a nice thing for everyone to receive as they enjoy the party?
Pick an activity for the kids.
When the younger crowd is goofing off and causing mischief, what will the much younger crowd be up to? How will you keep the little ones entertained at a long party that goes late into the night, a little bit past their bed time?
How will you sum up the year?
Is there something you would like to put on in order to give everyone a pleasant sense of nostalgia for the year past? What is some common ground that everyone can stand on? Is it a shared musical experience, shared memories, or something else?
