Pick Your Preggo Food Cravings And We'll Reveal The Perfect Baby Name

We’ve all heard that old trope before: a person the size of a rainbow beach ball chowing down on a bowl full of pickles and ice cream. Believe it or not, these wild food cravings do exist. Pregnant people have been battling for ages against the incredibly strong, strange food cravings that bubble up when tiny creatures begin to grow inside them. The babies of this world might be brought into it with love, but emotions are definitely running high during those 9 months of cooking time. Some other strange cooking is likely going on while that kid is created too, no doubt!

From whipping up a tin of salty olives to throwing together rare steak and granny smith apples, there’s no end to combinations of food that can be thought up when the preggo brain fog hits. Sure, sometimes there are normal options. People are happy with their peanut butter on toast or their chocolate-covered strawberries. Lemon squares, blueberry jam and cheese, salmon with roasted almonds; they’re all foods we’ve eaten before, and are a little more widely accepted in terms of snacking in public. But those pregnancy cravings take even normal foods to a whole new level. Pick or pass on these potential treats and we’ll reveal what the perfect baby name is going to be.

Question 1

Pickles

Obviously we had to start with pickles. The quintessential food craving joke, there’s actually a real reason behind why people start to crave them. Sodium is tricky for some of us to get enough of, especially if we stay away from processed foods. Many who crave pickles are actually lacking in sodium.

Question 2

Baked Beans Topped with Mayo

Okay, let’s unpack this: baked beans on their own are not a gross food. Sure, some of the maple-soaked cans are a little too sweet, and sometimes the sauce looks more like slime than food. But baked beans on their own are not bad, and a solid source of protein. But mayo? It might taste like beauty and love on a sandwich, but we’re not sure how we feel about using it as a sauce.

Question 3

Chocolate Ice Cream

To be honest, we love chocolate ice cream in any state. Not only is it cool and creamy, but sweet and satisfying on those difficult sweet tooth days. Commonly joked about as being paired with pickles, ice cream is a preggo parent-to-be’s dream. At least there’s some calcium in there. That makes it healthy, right?

Question 4

Lemon Slices

No, not even the candy lemon slices. Straight up lemon is actually a pretty well documented pregnancy food craving. Something about the citrus is apparently a huge life-saver for people who are experiencing morning sickness and changing tastes. Other citrus foods like oranges and grapefruits are also popular, the the super sour lemon does take the cake.

Question 5

Iceberg Lettuce With Sugar

We’re getting into the truly strange cravings now. Baby Centre had posed the question to the world of “what was the weirdest pregnancy craving people had”. The response was incredible, and included results like this one. Iceberg lettuce apparently was the crunch factor, while the sugar satisfied the sweet aspect of the craving. Two birds, one stone, we guess?

Question 6

Sausages and Strawberry Jam

Yet another strange combination at first glance, but it is one combination of craveable foods that again has some grounding in reasonable understanding. Salty and rich, the sausages that we know and love are typically full of preservatives and delicious grease. Combine that salty goodness with the sweetness of strawberry jam? Delectable.

Question 7

Mushed Potatoes and Caramel Sauce

Sensing a theme yet? Combinations are key to keep those preggo preferences under control. Caramel sauce is typically too sweet for many of us to use as a regular topping, but that doesn’t stop the want from coming through when carrying a kid. The mushed potatoes we’re not sure about. Maybe it’s the fact that they can make little caramel sauce volcanoes?

Question 8

Apple Juice

A little more normal, but definitely not something we’ve ever craved. Apple juice is apparently an incredibly powerful craving for pregnant folks. So much so that there’s been stories of some sobbing when they realize they’ve run out! For many of us, it just makes us think of school cafeterias and lukewarm juice boxes, though.

Question 9

Bacon and Mars Bar Burgers

We’re not expecting. We’re not even accidentally expecting, and yet the craving is strong within us for this perfect food combination. We’re definitely seeing a trend with the flavor combinations, but we’re also seeing a great amount of culinary inspiration and artistry coming through. We hope we see this amazing combination at all the burger restaurants soon.

Question 10

Plain Snow Cones

Technically this isn’t a food. This is water. Frozen, cold water that’s been put into a cup. Traditionally snow cones are supposed to have some sort of flavored syrup poured on top, but many folks mention that the flavor isn’t necessary for a satisfying snow cone experience. These are usually the same folks that start craving ice and cold foods in general during the first trimester.

Question 11

Litres of Tomato Juice

Another one that’s not inherently strange, but we definitely prefer our tomato juice to be made into a caesar before we drink a litre or more of it. A little bit spicy and a touch sweet, tomato juice can actually be full of lots of good vitamins and minerals. Helpful for building a baby? Probably. We probably won’t be trying it during our potential future trimesters, though.

Question 12

Pickled Onions

Yup. This is still a food that we can buy at the grocery store. Normally reserved for Grandma’s appetizer table, pickled onions are apparently making a comeback in the world of preggo food cravings. The vinegar is really what sells it for many folks who are with child, making this an understandable (but old fashioned) craving.

Question 13

Ketchup

First tomato juice, now ketchup? Maybe we should just give them a tomato plant. Clearly there’s something about this food that makes it undeniably desirable. Is it the roundness of it? Do expecting folks feel more comfortable eating round foods, because it makes them feel less round? If that’s so, why is ketchup on this list? We’re sure there’s some psychology behind it, but we’re not entirely sure.

Question 14

Cottage Cheese and Sunflower Seeds

This is another real world food craving that came to us from Baby Centre. They’re full of stories about strange food cravings, and we have to admit: many of the weirdest ones seem to have no rhyme or reason behind them. It’s not that we’re judging, but seriously! Where’s the compelling flavor combination in cottage cheese and sunflower seeds?

Question 15

Toast with Cream Cheese and Coleslaw

This sounds like a more advanced flavor combination, placing it firmly in the realm of “at the mercy of these cravings.” There’s no way anyone would put cream cheese and coleslaw together, right? Turns out the combination is actually quite compelling to those with kid. The toast is likely just a delivery device, but we’re sure the crunch helped as well.

Question 16

Marinated Anchovies

Salty, oily, and chock full of protein, this is actually not a bad one in the world of preggo cravings. While some people absolutely, adamantly dislike marinated anchovies, we certainly like them. On pizza, in pasta sauces, and even in salads, anchovies add a salty, slightly crunchy kick to any meal.

Question 17

Fried Anything

If anchovies are a hit because of the oil, fried food must be a hit for the same reason. The heaviest, greasiest meal is absolutely a top of the line choice for everything from hangovers to pregnancy. We’re not saying they’re the same, not at all. But both seem to enjoy the comfort food qualities of a crunchy, crispy plate of onion rings.

Question 18

Olives

Kalamata olives, jalapeno stuffed olives, cheese stuffed olives, green olives, tinned olives, fresh olives; there’s no end to the delight that’s inherent in a good olive. Salty and toothsome, olives are the perfect match for any of those pesky cravings that hit. Healthier than chips, but just as salty. Seems like a good compromise to us.

Question 19

Apples and Steaks

A popular pairing for many, regardless of pregnancy status. Parents-to-be and meat lovers alike all love this pairing. A juicy, salt and peppered steak makes for the absolute best companion to some crisp apple slices. The sweeter the better when it comes to fruits, as that makes for a good counter balance to a heavily salted piece of meat.

Question 20

Chillies

She Knows made a comment in an article about pregnancy cravings once, regarding the fact that many folks who are expecting seem to crave spicy foods, including things like raw chili peppers! This is partially because of the fact that they tend to like the super strong flavors that come with chili spicing.

Question 21

Dry Cheerios

Preparing the kid early is important, which is why many people play classical music around their baby bumps. They’re just trying to do the best for their incoming baby, which we respect. Perhaps that’s the same thinking behind this food craving. Dry Cheerios are a popular toddler snack. Could that be because of the parent?

Question 22

Sauerkraut Pizza

Believe it or not, Cosmopolitan did report that this was a real craving. One of their readers offered it when they were trying to find the strangest pregnancy food cravings. Sauerkraut on pizza sounds like a dream come true for some, but for others the idea of briny cabbage touching their cheesy bread is a nightmare.

Question 23

Pickle Flavored Chips

Why not, right? We’ve already discussed pickles and chips separately, but putting the two foods together? It just might be a pregnancy craving double whammy of success and satisfaction. Salty, crip, pickle flavored; what could be better? To be totally honest, we’d probably go a step further and put these babies on a cheese sandwich. Just to get that crunch.

Question 24

Concentrated Frozen Lime Juice

Another Cosmopolitan reveal, this is a pregnancy craving that we’re 100% unsure about. Concentrated juice tends to have quite a bit of sugar in it. The person says that they were craving it in all its forms, but mostly eaten straight out of the tubes. Could this be a cheap version of a snow cone? Maybe!

Question 25

Cheetos with Strawberry Yogurt Dip

This is the deepest, darkest secret of the pregnancy craving world. Not only is this a pair that seems incredibly strange on its own, but with the addition of strawberry jam or strawberry flavoring it gets a whole new gross factor. We personally don’t think we’d go for it, but hey; we don’t have to eat it (yet).

Question 26

Pretzels Dipped in Honey

This one is a little more reasonable. Pretzels have long been paired with sweet, sticky honey, making this a more understandable craving. We’d even be willing to try it, despite the fact that pretzels are not our favorite. Honey is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without consuming too much sugar. Could this make this food one of the better craving options?

Question 27

5-Chili Chicken

Some cravings are more expensive than others, which makes this story from Cosmopolitan hard to think about. Apparently one person ended up getting struck with a craving for the 5-Chili Chicken dish that came from a fusion restaurant next door to them. Lemons and pickles are cheap; chili chicken? Now that can make a dent in the wallet.

Question 28

Spicy Sauce and Peanut Butter

Who doesn’t love peanut butter? Sure, it can cause some pretty bad allergic reactions in some, but for those of us not afflicted peanut butter is one of the greatest things in the world. Question 29

English Muffins

Who wouldn’t crave english muffins? Just thinking about them gets us all excited. English muffins with cheese, english muffins with butter, english muffins with honey, peanut butter, jam, Cool Whip. The options are endless for this versatile grain product. The way the toppings melt into all the little bubbles is absolute perfection.

Question 30

Popcorn with Garlic Butter

Real talk, this is definitely our favorite way to prepare popcorn. Not only is it deliciously buttery and filling, but it also tastes like garlic bread (with half the calories, of course). Garlic improves any and all dishes, including popcorn. Throw on a little parmesan cheese to feel even fancier! Trust us, though: this isn’t a weird craving at all.

Question 31

Mango Flavor

Sometimes it’s not even the food that causes the craving. It’s the smell, or even just the taste. That’s what happened to this person who found that they were craving the flavor of mango. Not necessarily mangos themselves. Mango desserts, mango drinks, dried mango, mango flavored candies; all of it was fair game.

Question 32

Grapefruit Candies

We’ve all tried these before, right? Those little pink and yellow triangles that come in bags at the grocery store. These are some of the best sour candies out there, but can we eat more than five or six of these super sour treats? Nope. According to some, though, there is a certain craving that the exaggerated grapefruit flavor satisfies.

Question 33

Raw Carrots

The people stuck with cravings for bacon cheeseburgers and cake are weeping right now, realizing that there are folks who actually crave fresh veggies like raw carrots. Bright orange and super crunchy, we’re not exactly sure what the appeal is. One person told Baby Centre that they thought it was the beta-carotene.

Question 34

Tuna Sandwich

A staple of many of our childhoods, tuna salad is a meal that we definitely don’t miss. The tuna is definitely a source or protein, which might be why so many pregnant folks start to crave it. As long as they’re refraining from topping their tuna sandwich with anchovies as well, we have nothing against it.

Question 35

Whipped Cream

Topping off our list in the same way it tops of sundaes, ice cream cake, and pumpkin pie, is none other than our favorite: whipped cream. While we’re not advocating eating this as a meal unto itself, we totally get why some people would want to (ourselves included). Pregnancy craving or not, this is a food want that we need to satisfy.
