Witches have been a part of our culture for many centuries, even to this day. Typically depicted as old crones with broomsticks and black cats, they’ve been regarded as servants of the Devil and were killed en masse during the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Trials later on. Then in wake of Neopaganism and the birth of Wicca (the modern equivalent to Witchcraft), the general outlook on witches became more positive. Instead of being seen as evil, witches were now considered a symbol of female empowerment with good looks and great powers. This shift in thinking became more apparent in movies as we saw green-skinned biddies like the Wicked Witch of the West be replaced by gorgeous hotties like the women in The Witches of Eastwick. With a revived interest in Witchcraft, fantasy series like Harry Potter became very popular as well as TV shows aimed at young girls like Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer which had witches in it. For adult women, there were series like Charmed and Witches of East End to satisfy their Wiccan fantasies. There are even revisionist takes on classic evil witch characters that put them in a more sympathetic light such as the Evil Queen in Once Upon a Time and Maleficient’s titular character. Another essential tool for witches in terms of spell-casting and rituals, the chalice is necessary to carry certain liquids that’ll make the spell or ritual work. Such examples include water, wine, or even an elixir that needs to either be consumed or simply present.
