Everyone has a certain city that they would really thrive in, if only they could move there. It might be because of the weather, it might be an industry that is biggest in that particular place, but for most people, it's a whole combination of things. It's the vibe of a city, the way it makes people feel, something intangible that just makes that place amazing... or that makes it a little too much! The same city that might make one person happy and energized can make someone else feel utterly overwhelmed, and vice versa... but which city would you thrive in?
We bet that we can tell you exactly which city you should live in - based only on your favorite makeup choices! Are you the kind of girl who is all about cosmetics, who would never dream of leaving the house without a full face of makeup on, or is the barefaced look more your style? Are you into the classic looks, or constantly experimenting with new trends, no matter how brightly colored or 'out there' they might be? Pick your favorites of these makeup trends, from the wildest Instagram looks (that you probably won't see on the street), to catwalk favorites and absolute classics, and find out which of these amazing cities would suit you best!
Bold Lip or a Bold Eye?
Traditional makeup wisdom dictates that a choice should be made between a bold lip color, or bold and dark eyes. Some people love to ignore that these days, and go big and bold on both! However, if you were going to just go for one, would you be more likely to draw attention to lips or to eyes?
Neon or Pastel shades?
Makeup doesn't have to be all about neutral colors, shades of brown, and trying to look 'natural'. Makeup is all about having fun for many people - and that means using every color in the rainbow! For a colorful makeup look, would you be more likely to reach for uber-bright neons, or softer pastel shades?
Yellow or Red Eyeshadow?
Many people still love the look of a dark smoky eye, or a soft shadow in a neutral shade, but some of the biggest looks on recent catwalks were bright bold colors - with just one shade swept over the entire lid. Would you rather rock a bright yellow eye, or one that is a deep bright red?
Crystals or Glitter?
For people who want to go bigger and bolder than just shadows and colors, and really make their makeup pop, nothing does it quite as well as a little sparkle... from glitter shades and liners to loose glitter, a dusting of sparkles looks amazing. Or, to get even bolder, would you prefer to glue on tiny crystals instead of fine glitter?
Silver or Gold?
For a metallic shimmer, the two most common choices are always going to be silver and gold. Sure, coppers and bronzes and rose golds have their time in the sun, but for most, silver and gold are where it's at. Which would you pick for a make up look with some real shine to it?
Unicorn or Mermaid?
Two of the biggest trends and inspirations for makeup looks recently have been mythical creatures - because who wouldn't want to be a magical fantasy, instead of just a plain old human headed to work? Are you more the unicorn type, or do the soft blues and greens of the mermaid looks call to you?
Gloss or Matte lip color?
If you wear lip color, you know that there are an eyepopping number of different options when it comes to finish. These days, it's possible to choose from semi-matte, silky finishes, stains and barely-there colors, but the two most classic looks for lips are either the super shiny and attention-grabbing gloss, or the much subtler matte - which is your favorite?
Highlight or Contour?
If you really want to make your bone structure stand out (or even make it look completely different) contouring and highlighting are a girl's best friend. Are you more the heavy-contour type, with only a little highlighter to balance out those darkened hollows, or are you happy to skip the shadow and cover your face in super bright highlights?
Metallic brows or Glitter brows?
More brow options, with two trends for people who want to make their brows a different color, rather than a different shape. Do you prefer the look of glittery brows, either in one color or in multiple colors of sparkles... or is that a little too bright for you, and you'd rather paint your brows with a metallic shade?
Nail art or eyelid art?
All makeup is art, really, but some is a little more like the kind of art that we are used to see hanging on the walls. If you were going to create tiny scenes, images and even words with your makeup, would you rather display those talents for tiny paintings on your finger nails, or on your eyelids?
Glitter lashes or feather lashes?
Eyebrows aren't the only facial hairs that get the makeup treatment! Everyone wants eyelashes as long and thick as possible, and that's where false lashes and heavy lashings of mascara come in to do the job. To go the extra mile, would you rather get glitter lashes, or lashes that look like feathers?
Dot liner or cat eye liner?
Eyeliner is a major part of most makeup looks - whether it is some barely there color just to make the eye pop, or the biggest part of the look, heavy and dramatic. Do you prefer the classic cat eye black liner, flicking up at the outer corner of the eye, or would you rather try something new with dot liner - eyeliner in dots along the lower lashline?
Glossy lips or glossy eyes?
Lips aren't the only place on your face where it's possible to rock a gloss - recent makeup trends have seen people flipping the look with matte lips and glossy eyes in all kinds of shades. How do you feel about the trend to a glossy eye? Do you love it, or do you think gloss should stick on lips?
Fishtail brows or bold brows?
Brows really are the trendiest thing in makeup right now, and it's pushing artists to do more and more interesting things with them. Do you prefer the more standard look of the moment, with brows grown out and filled in to look big and bold, or could you rock the fishtail brow, where the brow is split at the far end?
Glitter lips or nude lips?
When it comes to lips, it's possible to do pretty much anything that you can think of - and that means going as crazy, or keeping it as low key, as you could possibly want. Do you think you could pull off a lipful of brightly colored glitter? Or is that all a bit much, and you'll happily stick to a nude lip, thanks?
Squiggle Brows or Feather Brows?
A lot of the wildest trends (especially on Instagram) of the past few years have been all about the eyebrows - and making them into all kinds of shapes! Like the squiggle brows - brows shaped and drawn to be wavy (sometimes even with matching eyeliner or lips!). Or do you prefer the feather brows - brows combed outward for a feathered look?
Cut crease or smokey eye?
When it comes to eyeshadow, there are two major ways of defining the crease of the eyelid to make eyes appear bigger and more dramatic. Are you a fan of the more traditional smoky eye, with lots of dark shadow in the crease, blended out well? Or do you prefer the cut crease, with little blending and a contrasting shadow on the lid and above the crease?
Blunt liner or thumprint liner?
While the classic cat eye liner (or more natural, barely-there liner) will always be popular, that doesn't mean that artists aren't innovating with this makeup as well. Two popular catwalk looks this year have been a blunt liner - when the line extends past the lid, but ends sharply, not with a tapering flick - and thumbprint liner, where it ends in more of a blob. Which do you prefer?
Halo brow or monobrow?
Ok, now we know that we are getting a little bit silly with these eyebrow trends - although both of these looks are theoretically wearable off the internet... for some people! If you were going for an over the top brow, would you try a monobrow (and a little Frida Kahlo inspiration) or the 'halo brow' pictured?
Barely there makeup or full face?
Most people probably go for somewhere in the middle, at least on a day to day basis, with a little light makeup to highlight (or cover up) the things that they want to. However, if you had to go out every day in little to no makeup (the kind that looks like nothing at all) or a full face of slap - which would it be?
Furry nails or nail sculpture?
Nail art is one thing, but these versions of the nail art trend take it to the next level! Would you rather have long nails covered in soft fur (pictured), or have nails layered with acrylic that is shaped into miniature sculptures - from bows to animals? Neither are the most practical looks, but they are definitely eye catching!
Blacklight makeup or glitter tongue?
Not all makeup looks are appropriate for all occasions - and these two are definitely some of the more niche looks! Instagram went nuts when people started posting pictures of their glittery tongues - with warnings to use edible glitter, of course! Would you rock the glitter tongue, or would you prefer to hit the raves in makeup the glows under black light?
Ombre hair or ombre lashes?
Ombre isn't the newest trend on the block anymore, but this shading of one color into another is still sticking around - because it looks absolutely fantastic! It's still common to see an ombre hair color, but would you rather go a little bit smaller with your color change, and create ombre eyelashes instead?
Crown brows or nose hair extensions?
Taking the facial hair trends to the most extreme level are the Instagram and YouTube makeup artists that just can't be serious... including the ones who came up with these trends! If you had to wear one, would you be willing to go out in public with your eyebrows shaped into crowns... or with false eyelashes peeping out of your nostrils?
Holographic hair or soft lowlights?
Makeup and beauty isn't just about the face - it's also about your nails, and of course, your hair. People have been loving brightly colored hair in recent years, and this 'holographic' look is one of the big hits - so many rainbow shades combined into one style! Do you love this, or would you rather stick with some natural looking lowlights?
Bath bombs or bar shampoo?
Let's not forget the beauty products that we can use at home, but that don't come out into the world with us. If you were on a trip to Lush (a bathing beauty's favorite store!), would you be reaching for the bath bombs for some scented relaxation, or the eco-friendly bar shampoo that they are known for?
Turquoise liner or orange shadow?
More bright colors here... and these are definitely not for the faint of heart! Both of these looks were popular on the catwalks this year, but if you wear them out in public, you are sure to get some attention. Would you prefer a bright orange eyeshadow, or a bright blue turquoise eyeliner?
Overlined lips or blurred lip color?
At one time, most people liked to keep their lip color the same shape as their natural lips - but now, makeup artists are having a lot of fun with playing with those rules. Are you a fan of the overlined lips, made to look extra pouty? Or would you rather go the other way, with the blurred 'cherry bomb' lip color that looks like you've been sucking on a colored lollipop?
Inner liner or outer swoop?
More eyeliner choices for you! While teen goths the world over like to line their entire eye in thick black kohl, most artists prefer something a little less extreme - do you prefer to show off your liner skills with a swoop at the outer edge of the eyelid, or would you keep that small and focus on dramatic inner corner makeup?
Negative space liner or no liner at all?
While many people love dramatic eyeliner (and that cat-eye flick will always have its devotees), some people prefer not to wear eyeliner at all. Are you one of the liner-free crowd, or would you go all out with one of the most dramatic liner looks of the season: negative space liner where heavy liner is missing large areas?
Charcoal mask or glitter mask?
Face masks are part of every makeup fan's beauty regime - whether that is a traditional mud mask in the tub, or a fun sheet mask that makes you look like an animal. Would you be more likely to reach for the deep-cleansing charcoal mask, or the hugely Instagram-friendly glitter mask (for all those makeup unicorns)?
Dipped brows or dipped hair?
As well as softer ombre fades, there's another, more dramatic way to do two-toned color: the dip dye. This method of dying is all about getting a blunt line between the two shades, to pack a more powerful punch. Would you love to dip the tips of your hair in a contrasting hue, or are you more into a little subtle dip-dyed brow?
Yellow blush or orange blush?
For most people, blush colors are all about making you look like you have a natural flush to your cheeks - which means pinks, peaches and occasionally a little deeper red. However, makeup artists are branching out now with colors as bright as they want - including yellow and orange blush! Which would you rather wear?
Lip art or nail art?
Nail art is definitely one of the most wearable ways to get really creative with makeup - especially as all that hard work creating the art will stay in place for several days, not just be wiped off before bed! Would you stick with nail art, or would you be willing to go all out with some crazy lip art for the day?
Underliner or tightliner?
Finally, which of these eyeliner trends appeals to you most? Tightliner is a makeup artist's trick for making eyes appear bigger, but not heavily lined, by placing the liner right at the lash line, between the eyelashes themselves... whereas underliner is more dramatic, with colored liner applied to the lower lid, not the upper one.
