Although she first began working as a television journalist and briefly worked as a correspondent on The Daily Show, Olivia Munn eventually made the transition to film and has appeared in such movies as Magic Mike and X-Men: Apocalypse. Everyone knows her best for her breakout role as Hermione Granger in the wildly popular film series, Harry Potter. Although it has been years since the franchise pumped out its last movie of the series, Watson still enjoys considerable acting success and just recently starred as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, the live-action version of the classic Disney film. She also had a popular role in the teen film The Perks of Being a Wallflower and gave us a character misfits everywhere could relate to!
Drew Barrymore is best known for her romantic comedy films, particularly those she appeared in with her faithful co-star, Adam Sandler. These movies include The Wedding Singer, in which she played a waitress, 50 First Dates, in which she played a girl with a brain affliction that prevents her from creating new memories, and most recently the film Blended, in which she plays a single mother sent on the vacation of a lifetime with a man she cannot stand. This blond haired beauty has given us plenty of excellent movies over the years and has recently made the transition into film with the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet.
Zooey Deschanel may possibly fall under the category of typecast actresses in Hollywood, but these roles all just suit her so well! She is perfect for any character who may be a little off-beat, possibly eccentric, and just endearing enough that she always gets the attention of wanton men. We’ve seen this in such films as 500 Days of Summer, Yes Man, but definitely not in the Christmas film, Elf. In that particular movie, Deschanel managed to break from her typecast, if only briefly, to play a monotone and sardonic retail employee during the holidays. Thankfully she was back to her regular self when she switched to television with her hit sitcom, New Girl!
Is there truly anything Anne Hathaway can’t do? This actress is all over the place with her film genres, but we can say pretty confidently that she is best at playing the sultry lead in a romantic film, like in the movie Love and Other Drugs. That’s not to say she can’t branch into other genres, as she was perfect in the teen comedy Princess Diaries as a hopelessly awkward 16-year old who discovers she is the heir to a throne in a far away kingdom. She also wowed audiences everywhere with her powerful role in the Broadway musical-turned movie Les Misérables.
Scarlett Johansson (or Scar Jo, as her fans so adoringly refer to her) is one of those actresses who likes to prove she is much more than her looks. She is known for her witty remarks to any reporters who happen to ask her the wrong questions about a role, particularly if her male co-stars receive questions with much more substance. We see this especially in interviews about her role as Black Widow in the Avengers franchise. She will tell reporters all about her experience learning to convincingly combat foes, but nobody better ask her what it’s like wearing a skin-tight leather suit all day!
Actress Halle Berry is an Academy Award winning actress who also holds the distinction of being the only black woman to have ever won an Oscar for Best Actress. She has appeared in such movies as Monster’s Ball, Catwoman, and enjoyed a recurring role as the character Storm in the X-Men film franchise. She just recently appeared in the film Kingsman: The Golden Circle and is due to return to theaters in the John Wick third film installment titled John Wick 3: Parabellum. Berry was also ranked No. 1 on People’s “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” list in 2003!
Kate Winslet first rose to fame after her commanding performance in the romantic movie Titanic where she starred as the character Rose alongside co-star Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack. These two made for a movie overflowing with romance, drama, and plenty of gut-wrenching emotion as they discover their forbidden love for each other aboard the doomed Titanic. Since appearing in this film, Winslet has gone on to star in such other films as The Holiday, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Revolutionary Road. She is also quite the humanitarian and enjoys supporting a number of charities, such as the Afghanistan Relief Organization.
Actress Amy Poehler’s acting first took off after she appeared on the late night sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Since then, she has gone on to appear in a number of popular movies, like Blades of Glory, Sisters, and Baby Mama. She also recently lent her voice to the wildly successful animated children’s film Inside Out in which she played a character named Joy who controls a girl, Riley’s, emotions inside her head! Actress Charlize Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the hit biographical crime drama Monster. She is due to return to theaters with her own superhero movie Captain Marvel in which she plays the title character, and will reprise this role for the upcoming Avengers final installment, Avengers: Endgame.
Vanessa Hudgens first broke onto the scene with the wildly popular teen musical movie and Disney Channel original, High School Musical. In the film she plays opposite Zac Efron as two teenagers who fall for each other and discover their love for musical theatre, but then feel they have to hide these from their judgemental fellow classmates. Hudgens went on to reprise her role as Gabriella in the films two sequels before branching away from Disney for more serious roles. She has also showcased her musical abilities with a few hit singles and played Rizzo in a live performance of Grease on television.
Jennifer Lawrence began acting on television but earned her breakout role with the hit dystopian teen novel-turned-movie, The Hunger Games. In the film she plays Katniss Everdeen, a girl who takes her sister’s place in a battle against other teenagers for the title of Hunger Games champion. Actress Lily Collins is not only the daughter of music legend Phil Collins but is also an accomplished actress in her own right!
