Cosplay, which is short for “Costume play,” is a term used to describe a person who dresses up as a character from any kind of media whether it be anime manga video games or whatever. While most people think this is no different from dressing up for Halloween, cosplay isn’t restricted to one particular day. In fact, most people tend to cosplay during conventions such as Comic-Con which last several days. Though it is not restricted by age or gender, the most popular cosplays tend to be female. Now this rubs some older folks the wrong way, thinking that these young women who dress up in provocative clothing are just doing it for attention to excite male fanboys and nothing more.
The truth is, most females who cosplay don’t necessarily do it for the attention but to become the character they love by dressing up as them. Some even cosplay as male characters, and manage to fool even the most attentive viewers. It all comes down to passion, as we admire them not just because they look beautiful but also because of how much effort they put into their costume and mannerisms to embody the character they’re dressed up as. A psychiatrist named Harleen Quinzel was assigned to Arkham Asylum, where Gotham City’s worst criminals were incarcerated, and it was there that she met Joker. During the various sessions they had, she started to fall in love with him which came to fruition when she became his girlfriend Harley Quinn.
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Having inherited her father’s mansion and fortune, Lara Croft spends her free time uncovering rare artifacts from around the world. In some cases, though, she gets into scuffles with other rival treasure-hunters and even agents from mysterious organizations who want to use the artifacts for their own purposes.
Alice (Resident Evil)
Waking up in a shower naked, Alice walks around and realizes she’s in a mansion she doesn’t remember. Then after joining a group of special forces, she and the others learn the mansion houses a giant research facility where a virus was being studied which got out of hand.
Garona (Warcraft)
A half-human/Orc slave, she is initially imprisoned and then released by King Llane of Stormwind who has her swear loyalty to him in exchange for helping them spy on an Orc camp. After leading the humans there, they learn the Orc leader is planning to invade Stormwind.
Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)
Starting off as an FBI agent, Sonya Blade had a partner who got killed by a cybernetic criminal named Kano. Later, she gets called to a secret tournament called Mortal Kombat. It is in this tournament that she meets Kano and beats him in a one-on-one fight.
Scarlet Witch (Avengers: Age of Ultron)
Along with her brother Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch was gifted with unusual powers since birth. Hers in particular involved a mixture of telekinesis and mind manipulation. Though being a part of the Avengers helped her find a sense of purpose, her powers still proved to be dangerous if mishandled.
Babydoll (Sucker Punch)
The young woman who’s nickname is Babydoll is committed to an asylum against her will by her abusive father and lobotomized. While this happens, she has dream-like fantasies involving her fellow inmates battling zombies and dragons while wearing skimpy outfits.
Ancient One (Doctor Strange)
Also known as the Sorceress Supreme, the Ancient One has lived for many centuries keeping the balance between the various inter-dimensional forces that interact with our world. But when a student of hers goes rogue, she takes in Stephen Strange and teaches him magic after some reluctance.
Lady Sif (Thor)
One of Thor’s companions from Asgard, Lady Sif tracked him down to Earth to warn him of Loki’s plans. Then after stopping an invasion by the Dark Elves, she aided S. H. I. E. L. D. in catching criminals who had escaped from Asgard.
Hit-Girl (Kick-Ass)
When Mindy McCready’s cop father was framed for a crime he didn’t commit, her mother left them. So with nothing else left, Mindy undergoes training with her father and the two become vigilantes known as Hit-Girl and Big Daddy respectively.
Maria (Assassin's Creed)
A member of the Assassins Brotherhood during the fifteenth century in Spain, Maria and her comrade Aguilar de Nerha are assigned to rescue Prince Ahmed from the clutches of the Knights Templar who want to coerce Ahmed’s father into giving them a powerful artifact known as the Apple of Eden.
Tamina (Prince of Persia)
The princess of the religious city Alamut, Tamina and her people are quickly overthrown by the Persians led by the King’s sons. They were led there under the belief that Alamut was forging weapons against the Persian Empire, though Tamina denies this.
Vanellope (Wreck-It Ralph)
A humanized glitch, Vanellope Von Schweetz convinces former video game baddie Wreck-It Ralph to help her win the Sugar Rush race (which she’s never been allowed to participate in) and promises to give back the medal that she stole from him. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know how to drive.
Cinderella (2015 remake)
Kind and innocent, Cinderella suffered tragedy at a young age when her mother died of illness so her father married another woman who was cruel and vain along with her two daughters. Then when her father passed away, she was forced into servitude.
Maleficent
Once a powerful forest fairy, Maleficent fell in love with a man named Stefan but he betrayed her out of his desire to become King. So she decides to get revenge on him by cursing his newly born daughter Aurora to die upon turning sixteen.
Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
Despite being the daughter of the Sea King Triton, Ariel yearns to be among those who walk on land. For this reason, she likes to collect various items from shipwrecks and consult her seagull friend Scuttle about what each of them are.
Belle (Beauty and the Beast 2017)
In a small town in France called Villeneuve, a young girl named Belle lives with her father who makes music boxes for a living but is ostracized by the town’s people because of her intelligence which is demonstrated in Belle’s tendency to read books.
Elsa (Frozen)
Having had the ability to freeze things by merely touching them since she was a child, Elsa grew up to be afraid of her powers after accidentally freezing her sister Anna. Then when their parents died, she inherited the throne and became Queen.
Moana
On the island of Motunui, the chief’s daughter Moana was chosen by the sea as a child to return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti which was stolen by a shape-shifting demigod named Maui and then lost. However, her father keeps her away from the sea.
Rey (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
A scavenger on the desert planet Jakku, Rey was orphaned at a young age and constantly wonders why her parents abandoned her. Then she comes across a small droid named BB-8 which happens to carry a map that shows where the galaxy’s last Jedi is.
Taarna (Heavy Metal)
The last of the Taarakian race, the female warrior Taarna sets off to destroy the Loc-Nar, a sentient green sphere which causes destruction and mayhem wherever it goes. In this case, it turned several barbaric people into zombies and they destroyed a whole city.
Lady Amalthea (The Last Unicorn)
Curious about why she is the last of her kind, a unicorn ventures from her native forest. After being mistaken for a horse, she is captured by a traveling carnival but rescued by a magician. Then while being chased by the Red Bull, she is changed into a human.
Princess Lili (Legend)
Long ago, a princess named Lili visited a forest-dwelling boy named Jack who promised to show her the two unicorns that protect the realm of light with their magic horns. However, one of the unicorns gets killed because of Lili's carelessness and so she tries to set things right.
Éowyn (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers)
The King of Rohan’s niece, Éowyn watched as her uncle grew weaker under the manipulative words of his advisor Gríma Wormtongue. She even had to witness her brother Éomer get banished and her cousin (who was also the King’s son) slowly die of poison.

Originally known as Jadis, the White Witch created a perpetual winter in the land of Narnia in Aslan’s absence. She also outlawed the celebration of Christmas and has a secret police who capture those who’ve disobeyed her. Once they are brought to her house, she turns them into stone statues.
Tauriel (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug)
One of the Wood Elves who patrol Mirkwood, Tauriel and the Prince Legolas come across a group of Dwarves who’ve been causing general disturbances after rescuing them from some large Spiders. The Dwarves are then imprisoned by the Wood Elf King and Tauriel takes a liking to one of them.
Laurie Strode (Halloween)
When she was a baby, Laurie’s brother Michael Myers murdered their older sister and was committed to an asylum. Meanwhile, she was adopted by the Strode family and was never told about her relation to Michael until after she was nearly killed by him.

Kayako Saeki was an ordinary housewife living in suburban Tokyo who developed a crush on her college professor and wrote about him in her diary. But upon seeing the diary, Kayako’s husband thought she was cheating on him and murdered her.
Anna Valerious (Van Helsing)

Edith Cushing (Crimson Peak)
