Those who find themselves suddenly and inexplicably craving foods that they have never particularly liked might want to go out and purchase a pregnancy test. Indeed, strange and uncontrollable cravings are one of the many telltale signs that a woman is pregnant. However, some believe that it is because pregnant women are lacking some kind of nutrient and that the cravings are the body's way of asking for whatever nutrient it is that it needs. For example, women that crave pickles or processed cheese might be lacking sodium whereas women that are desperate for a plate of fries might be lacking potassium.

In addition, because pregnant women experience increased hormonal activity, some might find that their sense of taste and their sense of smell have been heightened. As such, certain foods might seem more vile than usual whereas other foods might seem more enticing.
