“Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?” That is how many of us got to know Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson as a professional wrestler whose unusual catchphrase and dynamic personality first brought him to the attention of movie lovers and Hollywood.
However, the Rock wasn’t going to just leave it there, but he was preparing to rock the world with his theatrical performances. He made his big screen debut in the 2001 film, The Mummy Returns, in which he played an ancient warrior king who was transformed into a giant scorpion monster. Yes, the movie only had him in two scenes, and in one of them, it was just his head stuck on top of some less than perfect CGI.
But it was a start. Ever since then, he has been acting, and his career as an actor has been pretty impressive as he has managed to carry a lot of movies just with his presence of character. A lover of popular entertainment, Dwayne tends to star in action comedies, but he has also been in some more serious roles, as well as a number of kids’ movies. Did you enjoy The Mummy Returns?
The Mummy Returns was the movie where Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson first made his big onscreen debut. This 2006 film is set in the near future of 2008 (and as such, does not quite age as well as it might). A bizarre tale about the military industrial complex, this surrealist technothriller functions as a self-aware black comedy that is far smarter than one might expect. While many people dislike the film, some critics have praised its brilliance as being akin to the works of David Lynch. Do you like Southland Tales, or did its plot go south on you?
