It's hard to believe that Grey’s Anatomy came out more than ten years ago, all the way back in 2005. Currently, 15 seasons of the show have been produced, with the latest season having been aired on TV in September 2018.
Interestingly enough, the title of the show is a play on Gray’s Anatomy, a very influential medical textbook on human anatomy that was published for the very first time all the way back in 1858. It was written by the 19th century anatomist and surgeon Henry Gray.
The extremely popular show takes place mostly in a hospital setting and the story line focuses on the professional and personal lives of numerous interns, residents and attending physicians such as Meredith Grey (who is the central character on the show and who is played by the actress Ellen Pompeo), Derek Shepherd (who is also known as “McDreamy” and who is played - or rather, was played - by the actor Patrick Dempsey), Cristina Yang (played by Sandra oh), Izzie Stevens (played by Katherine Heigl) and Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers). Initially, the cast consisted of nine actors (and as such, nine central characters). However, as is only natural, as the series progressed some of these actors were replaced by others and more actors were introduced.
Addison Montgomery - Pick or Pass?
Addison Montgomery is Derek Shepherd’s ex-wife. In season one of the series she arrives at Seattle Grace in an attempt to win Derek back. Her plan proves successful in that Derek agrees to give their marriage another shot but eventually Addison realizes that Derek is in love with Meredith Grey.
Ben Warren - Pick or Pass?
When we are first introduced to Benjamin Warren, better known simply as Ben Warren, he works as an Attending Anesthesiologist. Later he becomes a Surgical Resident and still later he decides to ditch his job at the hospital and become a firefighter. He is married to Miranda Bailey, who, while initially skeptical of Benjamin's chancing occupations, eventually accepts his decision.
Callie Torres - Pick or Pass?
The former Head of Orthopedic Surgery, Callie Torres is involved with a number of people before she meets and marries Arizona Robbins. Their relationship is not an easy one however and eventually the two divorce and Callie ends up moving to New York. However, in the end Arizona decides to move to New York with their daughter too.
Jackson Avery - Pick or Pass?
The grandson of an incredibly famous surgeon, Jackson Avery is the Head of Plastic Surgery. Nicknamed “Pretty Boy” by Cristina Yang he eventually develops a crush on her but nothing comes of it. He is the ex-husband of April Kepner who, before they started dating, was also his best friend.
Andrew DeLuca - Pick or Pass?
After working as an EMT after high school Andrew DeLuca decides to become a surgeon. In season 12 of the show he helps an intoxicated Jo go to bed when Alex Karev walks in on them and, misunderstanding the situation, beats Andrew up.
Izzie Stevens - Pick or Pass?
Isobel Stevens, better known simply as Izzie Stevens, is a Surgical Resident who works incredibly hard to become a doctor. She is at one point married to Alex Karev but their relationship does not work out. After giving a patient incorrect dosage of medicine she is fired and ultimately leaves Seattle for good.
Arizona Robbins - Pick or Pass?
Arizona Robbins is first hired at Seattle Grace as a Pediatric Surgical Fellow. She immediately begins a relationship with Callie Torres and the two end up marrying each other and having a daughter named Sofia Robbin Sloan Torres. Their relationship does not last although at the end of season 14 Arizona and Sofia leave for New York where Callie is located.
Stephanie Edwards - Pick or Pass?
The former Surgical Resident at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Stephanie Edwards eventually quits her job after a traumatic experience so as to focus on life outside the hospital. At one point she dates Jackson Avery but their relationship ends when Jackson professes his love to Alex Kepner at her wedding.
Lexie Grey - Pick or Pass?
Lexie Grey is Meredith Grey’s half-sister and as such is often referred to as “Little Grey”. Initially their relationship is strained since Meredith has no interest in getting to know the over-enthusiastic Lexie. However, over the course of the series they become close and Meredith is grief-stricken when Lexie passes away after an airplane crash.
Teddy Altman - Pick or Pass?
Before taking up a position of Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital Theodora Altman, better known simply as Teddy Altman, serves in the army alongside Owen Hunt. Throughout the course of the series it becomes apparent that both Teddy and Owen have feelings for one another but their relationship proves to be complicated. Eventually, Owen fires Teddy in the hopes that she will take the job offered to her by the U.S. Army Medical Command.
Richard Webber - Pick or Pass?
The former Chief of Surgery, Richard Webber is an important figure with a seriously complicated past. His relationship with Meredith Grey is strained as a result of his tumultuous relationship with her mother Ellis Grey. He eventually steps down from his position so as to focus on his marital life.
Derek Shepherd - Pick or Pass?
One of the most popular doctors not only among viewers but also among female doctors and interns of the show, Derek Shepherd has earned himself the nickname "McDreamy". He initially moves to Seattle in an effort to get over his ex-wife Addison Montgomery and quickly falls in love with Meredith Grey. Unfortunately, he passes away in season 11 of the show.
Jo Wilson - Pick or Pass?
Jo Wilson, later known as Jo Karev, is a Surgical Innovation Fellow. Initially she and Alex Karev – her future husband – don’t get along since he thinks that she has had an easy upbringing. However, it is later revealed that Jo’s childhood was anything but easy and later still we learn that she ran away from her manipulative husband and even changed her name so as to avoid being found by him.
Cristina Yang - Pick or Pass?
Cristina Yang is Meredith Grey’s best friend although throughout the course of the series they too do not avoid falling out (mostly as a result of their different outlooks on their professional lives). Cristina is a very talented and ambitious doctor who puts her job above everything else. Many fans will probably agree that she is hands down the best character on the show.
April Kepner - Pick or Pass?
April Kepner is fired from her job several times, once for being responsible for the passing away of her patient and once for not passing her Medical Boards. She is the ex-wife of Jackson Avery and the wife of Matthew Taylor. In season 14, April quits her job at the hospital and becomes involved in charity work.
Amelia Shepherd - Pick or Pass?
An amazing Neurosurgeon and later the Head of Neurosurgery, Amelia Shepherd is Derek Shepherd’s sister. The two don’t have the best relationship initially but over the course of the series they work things out. At one point during the series she marries Owen Hunt but her refusal to start a family results in them drifting apart and then divorcing.
Nathan Riggs - Pick or Pass?
Nathan Riggs is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, a friend of Owen Hunt and the husband of Hunt’s sister Megan. After Megan’s disappearance his and Owen’s relationship sours but eventually the two reconcile. Nathan falls in love with Meredith and they bond over losing a loved one. However, when Megan suddenly re-appears, Nathan resumes his life with her.
Maggie Pierce - Pick or Pass?
Maggie Pierce is the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery. She is Meredith Grey’s half-sister and while initially Meredith is less than friendly towards her, in the end the two form a relationship. Maggie is a talented and ambitious doctor and it is at one point revealed that she finished medical school early.
George O’Malley - Pick or Pass?
The Surgical Resident George O’Malley is probably one of the nicest characters on the series although many fans have found him quite annoying. For a long time he is obsessed with Meredith Grey even though he knows that she is in love with Derek Shepherd. He passes away like a true hero – he jumps in front of a bus so as to save someone else’s life.
Owen Hunt - Pick or Pass?
The former Chief of Surgery and the current Head of Trauma Surgery, Owen Hunt is a talented doctor who was at one point of his life an army member. He is rather unlucky in love and over the course of the series has dated quite a few women, two (Cristina Yang and Amelia Shepherd) of which he married.
Preston Burke - Pick or Pass?
The Cardiothoracic Surgeon Preston Burke resigns from his position at Seattle Grace Hospital after leaving his fiancée Cristina Yang on their wedding day. He goes on to win the Harper Avery award and sets up the Klausman Institute for Medical Research of which he is in charge of until he passes it on to Cristina.
Miranda Bailey - Pick or Pass?
Initially Miranda Bailey appears cold and tough but over the course of the series she softens somewhat. Before she marries Ben Warren she is romantically involved with a number of people, including the nurse Eli. In one of the later seasons she learns that she has OCD but takes medication for it. She is eventually given the position of Chief of Surgery.
Alana Cahill - Pick or Pass?
A Physician Adviser, Alana Cahill’s role on the show is to save Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital from insolvency. As a character she is rather annoying and as a result most doctors – and viewers - disliked her very much. On the other hand, she was simply trying to do her job.
Ellis Grey - Pick or Pass?
As is probably obvious from the surname alone, Ellis Grey is Meredith Grey’s mother (as well as the mother of Maggie Pierce). She is an amazing surgeon and is given the Harper Avery Award twice during her life. Later on in the series she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Mark Sloan - Pick or Pass?
Mark Sloan is the reason why Derek Shepherd’s and Addison Montgomery’s marriage does not work out. For a while he dates Lexie Grey but their relationship is complicated and he only admits that he loves her right before she passes away after a plane crash. Later he too passes away as a result of the wounds that he received from the crash.
Sydney Heron - Pick or Pass?
One of the most cheerful characters on the show, Sydney Heron is a bit too sweet hence why Cristina Yang is not too fond of her. However, it turns out that the reason Sydney is so happy all the time is because it is her way of coping with the fact that she once contributed to the passing away of a patient.
Reed Adamson - Pick or Pass?
Reed Adamson is the Surgical Resident at Seattle Grace West Hospital who meets her end when she refuses to show the widow Gary Clark where Derek Shepherd’s office is located because she has to attend to a patient. As a character, Reed was a bit weird but still, she did not deserve what she got.
Penelope Blake - Pick or Pass?
Penelope Blake, better known simply as Penny Blake, will always be remembered as the woman who contributed to Derek Shepherd’s passing away. After Derek’s car accident Penny insists twice that Derek needs a head CT but eventually gives in to Paul, the surgeon treating Derek, who says that they do not have time for one. This proves to be a mistake.
Meredith Grey - Pick or Pass?
Meredith Grey is the central character in the series. While she starts off as an intern she quickly becomes the Head of General Surgery. For a long time she is involved with Derek Shepherd and eventually marries him and has three children with him. She is best friends with Cristina Yang who prompts her to not give up her work at the hospital when she starts a family with Derek.
Shane Ross - Pick or Pass?
Shane Ross is also known as “Happy” and “Dopey” by Cristina Yang, who is his mentor. When Cristina decides to take the job at Klausman Institute for Medical Research Shane begs her to take him with her as he doesn't want to lose her as his mentor.
Rebecca Swender - Pick or Pass?
The Attending Surgical Oncologist Rebecca Swender is the doctor that treats Izzie Stevens’ cancer. She comes into conflict with Derek Shepherd over his proposed treatment but of course loses out to him. Eventually Izzie’s cancer stops growing and Rebecca passes her case onto another doctor.
Lucy Fields - Pick or Pass?
Lucy Fields is the Attending OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellow who helps Callie Torres deliver her baby. She has a brief relationship with Alex Karev and likes him so much that she is hesitant to take a job offered to her elsewhere. However, when she realizes that Alex doesn't care as much about her, she takes a job at a clinic in Malawi.
Erica Hahn - Pick or Pass?
When the Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon Erica Hahn starts working at Seattle Grace Hospital she ends up having a relationship with Callie Torres. This relationship does not work out however (because Callie can't commit) and Erica ends up leaving the hospital.
Leah Murphy - Pick or Pass?
It is Mark Sloan who initially helps Leah Murphy to get into the surgical program at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. However, she is then fired by Richard Webber because he thinks that she doesn't have the necessary surgical skills. She then goes on to work at Foster Hospital and later returns to Seattle Grace where she proves that she is a competent Surgical Doctor after all.
Alex Karev - Pick or Pass?
Initially Alex Karev is a bit of a player but maybe that’s the result of his difficult childhood. He is also rather unfriendly and cocky. However, as the series progresses his attitude changes for the better. He is the ex-husband of Izzie Stevens and the current husband of Jo Wilson.
Sloan Riley - Pick or Pass?
The daughter of Mark Sloan, Sloan Riley only meets her father when she is 18 years old. Sloan comes to Mark when her mother kicks her out of the house for getting pregnant. She is rude and tends to only care about herself. In the end, she decides to give the baby away.
Bokhee - Pick or Pass?
The scrub nurse Bokhee may not speak much but she is present during most surgeries. She does however voice her opinion when she believes it is necessary and she has helped many surgeons at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. It is obvious that she has been an employee at the hospital for some time and she has appeared in every single season of the series.
Denny Duquette - Pick or Pass?
One of the most memorable patients on the show, Denny Duquette comes to Seattle Grace after he develops problems with his heart. He becomes very close to Izzie Stevens and eventually the two get engaged. Unfortunately, after a heart transplant surgery Denny has a stroke and passes away. He leaves the grief-stricken Izzie his fortune and she often hallucinates about him.
Nicole Herman - Pick or Pass?
The Head of Fetal Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Nicole Herman is Arizona’s mentor. Eventually it becomes apparent that Nicole has a tumor and although her surgery goes well and the tumor is removed, the surgery leaves her blind. Nonetheless, she manages to come to terms with her new life.
Sadie Harris - Pick or Pass?
A friend of Meredith Grey, Sadie Harris is at one point a Surgical Intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. She is a bit crazy – she cuts her own shoulder so that other interns can practice stitching it up and allows interns to perform an unsupervised appendectomy on her. She eventually leaves the hospital but not before she tries to convince Meredith to go travelling with her.
Kyle Diaz - Pick or Pass?
Kyle Diaz is a guitarist who has sclerosis that results in hand tremor. Because this is impacting his musical performance he comes to the hospital to have it treated. It is then that he becomes involved with Stephanie Edwards. Later he is also diagnosed with meningitis and eventually passes away.
Adele Webber - Pick or Pass?
As the surname probably makes it quite clear, Adele Webber is Richard Webber’s wife. Their marriage proves to be rather complicated. Just as Richard realizes that his marriage to Adele is incredibly important to him Adele gets Alzheimer’s and then passes away after a heart attack.
Susan Grey - Pick or Pass?
Susan Grey is the wife of Thatcher Grey (Meredith’s father) and the mother of Molly Grey-Thompson and Lexie Grey. She is very sweet and genuinely cares about Meredith. Unfortunately, it eventually comes to light that she is septic which results in her passing away.
Finn Dandridge - Pick or Pass?
If it weren’t for extremely poor timing Finn Dandridge might have had a chance with Meredith Grey. He is a vet who treats all sorts of animals including horses. He dates Meredith when Derek Shepherd is trying to patch up his marriage with Addison but in the end Meredith breaks up with him saying that she is in love with Derek.
Tyler Christian - Pick or Pass?
Tyler Christian is a nurse at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and has worked there for quite some time. Over the course of the series he helps a number of doctors and patients and in the process makes quite a few good friends, including Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang.
Oliver Lebackes - Pick or Pass?
Oliver Lebackes is an Attending Pediatric Surgeon who works at the Lebackes Pediatric Surgery Clinic but is sometimes asked to give a hand on cases at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. His area of expertise (the human sphincter) has resulted in him gaining many humorous nicknames. He is caring and confident and likes to give back to society.
Norman Shales - Pick or Pass?
Initially the former pharmacist Norman Shales is a Surgical Intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. However, he ends up having a stroke and later confesses that he has always wanted to become a Psychiatric Intern but that a small voice in his head told him to go into surgery instead. During his stroke he is surrounded by surgeons and as such his life is saved. After surgery he decides to go ahead and become a Psychiatric Intern.
Craig Thomas - Pick or Pass?
Dr. Craig Thomas works as the Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. He is Cristina Yang’s mentor and advises her to not let anything stand in the way of her job. Craig passes away while operating a patient - he has a heart attack.
Virginia Dixon - Pick or Pass?
Virginia Dixon is an amazing doctor (an Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon to be exact) despite the fact that she has Asperger's Syndrome which makes her stand out in social situations. Richard Webber wants Virginia to become the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery but she does not think that the offer they are making is good enough for her to stick around.
Emma Marling - Pick or Pass?
The Head of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Seattle Presbyterian Hospital, Emma Marling is initially Owen Hunt’s girlfriend. They are planning to move in together when Owen ends up hooking up with Cristina Yang. He then breaks up with Emma. She is offered a job at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital but decides not to take it because of Owen.
