There are a lot of video games out there in the modern world, as it has changed as an entertainment source for a small group of people into something that everybody seems to enjoy to a certain extent. Video games are mainstream now, and that has meant that those thinking about gaming or writing about it, having to come up with ways of talking about everyone involved in the medium. For many people, their enjoyment of video games either makes them a hardcore gamer or a casual gamer, two terms that have come to mean a lot in the world of gaming.

A casual gamer is somebody that plays games casually, who isn't tied down by video gaming as a medium and is willing to pick up and play whenever they feel like it. They don't feel a deep affinity to gaming like some people do. Hardcore gamers are different, as they see games as being a part of their life. In fact, a lot of their personality and the way they see art is probably through the lens of video gaming. We've created a quiz where we will ask everyone to pick and pass on various video games. After you've done that, we think we'll be able to tell you which sort of gamer you are!

Batman Arkham Knight

We had been waiting a long time for a good Batman game, so when Rocksteady released their trilogy of Batman games, everyone was happy. Sure, they got worse as they went on, but that doesn't mean every single one of them wasn't great.

Yoshi's Island

This SNES classic was the first in the Mario series that didn't put you in control of the titular plumber. Instead, you played one of his many dinosaur pals as they attempted to get the baby Mario back to where they belonged!

World Of Warcraft

This is quite possibly one of the most famous games of all time. Starting the rise of the MMORPG, this game brought together a huge number of players as they all took part in a collective fantasy land where they got to play out their own adventures.

Banjo Kazooie

This is a game that many people had during their childhood. Released for the N64, this Rare titled put you in control of a bear who goes on an adventure with their bird friend, attempting to save their sister from an evil witch.

As the ability to make games has gone down in price and the independent circles have expanded, indie games have started to get pretty technical in their own right. However, in the case of World Of Goo, this was a time when indie games looked simple and usually tasked you with puzzles.

There was once a time when first person shooters ran the video gaming world, but various accepted norms and tropes in the formula started to turn them stale. It's games like this that are making modern first person shooters fun!

Undertale

We're scared to say anything about this game in case you haven't played it. All we will say is that it is one of the most unique games we have played in a long time, and if you haven't put some time into it, then you should be doing.

Bioshock Infinite

Video games usually fall into one of two camps, either offering you a chance at an over-the-top adventure or a deep narrative to enjoy. This is one of the only modern games that offers you the chance at both if you go looking for them.

Breath Of The Wild

Even people who are dead into The Legend Of Zelda as a franchise had to admit that the series was getting stale. Nintendo clearly took note of this and decided to come up with something completely different with Breath Of The Wild.

Burnout Paradise

Racing games are dime a dozen in the video game world, but this was the first racing game to throw you into a truly open world that was packed with things to do. With no humans to get in the way, it was all about the driving and the cars.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

The thing about Nintendo is, they have a huge roster of recognizable characters at this point, meaning they can make a very good game and slap any face on the front of it. They should probably start moving away from hardware development though...

As we move forward in this world, technology is advancing at an astonishing rate. It's no surprise then that various video games have started to look into the subject of robots, androids and the proliferation of AI.

Devil May Cry 4

The Devil May Cry series has definitely had its ups and down, but generally speaking they've been able to keep a hold of what made the first game amazing. There will always be people making amazing action games, so Devil May Cry did its job.

Doom (2016)

Who knew that by going back in time you could find a better group of gameplay mechanics for first person shooters? These games are bringing back what used to make these games fun, something first person shooters have forgotten in recent years.

Uncharted 2

Sure, it may be based on many films and have a serious amount of cinematic choices, but the gameplay in these games is enough to keep you coming back. The set pieces are massive and have a serious amount of adrenaline running through them.

The Witness

This is quite possibly one of the hardest puzzle games we've ever played. Seriously, if you like games that hold your hands, then we don't think this game is for you. The game is so beautiful that it keeps you coming back no matter what.

The Oregon Trail

This is one of those games that was on school computers, so you can be pretty sure that everyone has played this. Why would you want to do work when you know you could be playing a game instead?!

The Last Of Us

We cannot wait for the second game in this series as it is already proving to be a powerful entry. This game was good enough and we're not saying that it needed a sequel, but we're looking forward to seeing what the team end up doing.

The Division

In the modern world, there is quite the obsession with multiplayer games, as developers know that this will get them more of an audience. Sadly, this means you can end up with games that are quite boring once the online audience has moved on!

Shadow Of Colossus

This is one of those games that you can't truly explain without playing it. We don't want to ruin anything and if we explained the game to you, we don't think you would enjoy it as much as actually taking part in the game yourself.

Resident Evil 7

We're not sure how Capcom managed it, but they were able to bring back Resident Evil. They absolutely ran it into the ground, but by getting somebody else in to write the narrative, they brought the franchise back to its roots.

Red Dead Redemption

Westerns are a seriously classic genre, so it was only a matter of time before video games threw up a truly classic cowboy game. Seriously, if you've never played this, you should go and buy it right now. You should be able to get it on the cheap.

Portal

This is a game that has since been spoilt by the internet and people thinking they're being funny by parroting what were once good jokes. Honestly, you should probably go and play it but only if you've never seen anyone talk about it.

Persona 5

Japan has created a serious amount of games that so many of us have never played. We're glad that they've started to throw them all overseas so that we get a chance to try out the brilliant games that the Japanese enjoy.

Nier Automata

This was quite possibly one of my favorite from the past five years. It had fantastic combat and didn't care about how weird it got. Not only that, but it asked genuine questions about what makes a human being a human being.

Metal Gear Solid 3

Metal Gear has had a lot of ups and downs but we think it's genuinely accepted that this is the greatest game in the series. It's where the game was able to truly become what it had wanted to become in the past, but technology couldn't allow it.

Mass Effect

We don't know about you and we would never say that people shouldn't play whatever games they want to play, but Bioware seem to make terrible games. They're so slow and offer nothing that other people aren't doing much better!

Grim Fandango

People don't really make games like this anymore. Honestly, the want to create point and click games just doesn't exist anymore. We know people continue to make narrative games, but they're just now what they used to be!

God Of War (2018)

People know that we're not a fan of remakes and reboots, but even we have to admit that this one did it right. They took what made the last game good and make everything better. Not many people can do that!

Far Cry 5

It's almost as if people just want the same game over and over, right? Seriously, the only reason this game exists is because people continue to buy the same games all the time. Such a shame that others can't see what video games could be.

Fallout 3

Honestly, we don't know why, but we love these games. All of these games end up being the same anyway, and they don't really hold onto the same vibe and aesthetic of the original games. They should be going back to the past.

This is quite possibly one of the weirdest video games out there. If you haven't played it, just know that you're missing out on a truly weird adventure that we doubt you'll be able to get anywhere else. We think you should go play it!

While a lot of people felt that the first Halo game was a great look at what first person shooters could be in the modern world, every game afterwards seem to get worse. The only point was to play the multiplayer to be honest.

Just like in other forms of artistic media, it's the independent areas that are creating the most interesting stuff. We're not saying that people in AAA gaming can't do anything of worth, but they usually have to stay within barriers.

The Wind Waker

Believe it or not, but when this game was first announced, people were upset at how different the graphics looked. Now it's looked upon as one of the most beautiful games out there. Proof that sometimes the audience is wrong.

After the second game in the Monkey Island franchise, the series was handed to new people. While they aren't as good, the third game in the series is well worth a look. We always really liked the graphics as well if we're honest!

Quite possibly the most famous game of all time, we're not sure there's anyone in this world who hasn't played some form of this game at some point in their life. A great stepping stone in the past of video games to take us where we are now.

Games like this are the sort that end up making such a ripple in the video gaming world that we can still see games made that are based on it. There will never be a time that won't feel the influence of this instant classic video game.

Journey

There are some games that genuinely make you look inward. This game had me thinking for hours, so we have told everyone in our lives that it's something they should play. We don't think we've had an experience like it since.

Mega Man

They may seem ridiculously difficult, but these games were a very big deal back in the day. While Mega Man hasn't had a decent game for a very long time, there was a time when anything with his name could guarantee to make a lot of money.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

While some may argue that it isn't the greatest competitive game out there, but let's be honest here and say that more people play this game than they do many of the other fighting games that are out there!

Metroid Prime

Choosing to let people see through the eyes of Samus was a great choice. Seriously, this is the sort of thing that developers should be very proud of. Whoever first thought of it should win some sort of award if you ask us!

It's not surprising that the newest video game in the Mario series ended up making some serious money and bringing in a huge number of glowing reviews. It almost seems like Nintendo can do no wrong when it comes to the little plumber.

Pokémon Go

People have been talking about this game for years, so to think that it only came about because of a joke made by Google. Just goes to show that there's nothing you should joke about because there's always someone out there who thinks it's a good idea.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Once you take your main character into space, you have to accept that there's not much else you can go with them without it starting to get ridiculous. They have managed it since then, but none of us thought they would be able to!

For some people, these games have become insanely important, becoming a huge mesh of statistics. However, for most of us they're just a fun romp through an interesting world that could never exist in the real world.

If you've never played this absolute classic, then we can only imagine you won't like it these days. Seriously, the modern world has made games like this incredibly frustrating. Every single leap has to be made with serious forethought.

However, this game can still be fun no matter how many new games you've played. The platforming is still pitch perfect to this day and most games these days that attempt to better it still can't manage what Nintendo did back in the day.

This is one of those games that both casual fans of fighting games, as well as real hardcore fans, end up loving once they give it a go. You don't often find those two sets of people come together in the modern world of serious fighting games!

They managed to do a lot with this game, creating a whole new set of stereotypes for third person shooters that people still continue to use. You can still go back and spend a huge amount of time loving this game as much as you used to.
