This popular teen romance is in a league of its own. It tells the story of a pretty and popular teen who is not allowed to date until her older, ‘ill-tempered’ sister finds a boyfriend! Clever, cute and romantic, this movie can be called the favourite chickflick of all time!
The Notebook
Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, this Ryan Gosling-Amy Adams starrer is a story about a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s, their story is narrated from the present day by an elderly man in an old-age home. This movie wasn’t an instant hit, but gradually gained popularity over the years.
Pretty Woman
In this modern-day Cinderella film, an escort (played by Julia Roberts) and a wealthy and polished businessman (Richard Gere) fall hard for each other. What ensues is an endearing series of poignant reality checks. The movie is sweet, empathetic and funny – although some find it to be too naïve and impractical!
My Best Friend’s Wedding
With Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett as the cast, this big starrer has utmost rewatch value! Roberts want to marry her best friend Mulroney, while he loves Diaz and is scheduled to marry her soon. Roberts will do anything to break off the wedding. Perhaps the most cute love triangle movie of all time!
A Walk to Remember
Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel, this is a movie about two teens who fall in love, and try to make each other a better person. For some, this movie may come off as preachy and corny, while others may find it sweet and beautiful. One thing is for sure, it certainly doesn’t portray teens as dumb and superfluous as most other chickflicks do.
Titanic
One of the most expensive movies of all time, this Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet movie is a larger-than-life tale of a poor boy-rich girl romance. You may love the grand romance, or roll your eyes at the unrealistic and clichéd romance between Jack and Rose. One thing is for sure, you will surely have an opinion about this movie!
Amelie
This French tale is about a young girl who creates her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. It was shot in over 80 Parisian locations, and was highly acclaimed. However, this movie is not everyone’s cup of tea. You might have found the vibrancy brilliant, or frankly, simply annoying and dizzying!
The Fault In Our Stars
Three words describe this movie the best: A beautiful tear-jerker. If you like emotional rollercoaster and love to bawl your eyes out, this movie is perfect for you. Its poignancy and sweetness will tug your heartstrings for sure, but if you prefer happy entertainers, then stay away from this one!
Casablanca
Yes, it’s often termed the best romantic movie of all time, but frankly, not everyone likes to watch old classic, black and white movies! You may have watched this movie multiple times and never miss on a chance to quote its lines, or maybe you just found it too boring and slow to even finish the movie.
Dirty Dancing
This movie has it all – sultry dances, drama, passion, a strong storyline and a climactic ending. A cult hit, Patrick Swayze perhaps became every teen’s heartthrob when the movie was first released. But of course, if you don’t like musicals or much of drama, then this movie may not be your favourite!
Ghost
This romantic fantasy thriller film stars Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopie Goldberg, and the plot centers on a young woman and a reluctant psychic who assists the ghost of her lover in saving her. It’s a beautiful movie, but if you like no-nonsense, realistic stuff then it’s a hard digest!
La La Land
Ryan Gosling plays a jazz pianist and Emma Stone, an aspiring actress – they fall in love with life and with each other – and of course create beautiful music. The sappiness may put some off or whisk them off to a wonder, ‘la la land’ – depends on what your style is!
Atonement
A thirteen-year-old irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. This movie is not a light watch, it talks about repercussions, intense jealousy and fabrications, and in the midst of it all, love. One needs to have a mature outlook to appreciate this movie.
The Incredible Jessica James
Tinder, blind dates, rebound relationship and excessive social media stalking – if you can relate to any of this, then this romantic comedy, starring Jessica Williams, Chris O’Dowd and Noel Wells, and released exclusively on Netflix, is a must-watch for you. It’s very Gen Z, ever-so-slightly superfluous, and just plain mindless fun.
Rust And Bone
This French–Belgian romantic drama starring Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts, is based on Craig Davidson's short story of the same name. It tells the story of an unemployed 25-year-old man who falls in love with a woman who trains killer whales. It’s a critical hit for sure, but honestly watching a foreign language film with subtitles is not everyone’s cup of tea!
Her
The emotions in this sci-fi drama film are an eclectic mix of loneliness, technology, future relationship dynamics and raw human needs. The movie follows the story of a programmer who falls in love with Sam, an intelligent operating system personified through a female voice. It is imaginative and… to put it bluntly, geeky!
Blue Jay
Meeting by chance when they return to their tiny California hometown, two former high-school sweethearts reflect on their shared past. Centering on nostalgia and mostly a narrative flashbacks, this movie is sort of slow, but if you stick to it till the end, it is a nice and intelligent watch.
Blue Valentine
This film depicts a married couple, shifting back and forth in time between their courtship and the dissolution of their marriage several years later. It’s non-linear narrative is a bit to hard to follow – and frankly often seems like a chore. But hey, if you are Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams fan, you will like this movie!
Carol
Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce. This movie is a mature romance, demands attentive watching, and is sure to overwhelm you with its beautiful range of emotions.
Maid in Manhattan
This time, it’s a rich boy, poor girl romance. A hotel maid and a high profile politician fall in love with each other. If you are a romantic, it’s all good and hopeful, but if you like more realism, then well, this film is full of dramatic and unrealistic clichés!
Romeo and Juliet
A modern update on the classic Shakespearean romance tragedy, it features Leonardo Di Caprio (Romeo) and Claire Danes (Juliet), who instantly fall in love when Romeo crashes a party and meets Juliet, despite their being members of feuding Montague and Capulet families. If you like modern updates, you’ll love this movie, but if you are a purist, it’s strongly suggested to pass this one!
Before Sunrise
The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other. Not much happens aside from talking and walking – and you need to be in a certain mind frame to enjoy the intricate intelligence of this movie!
Notting Hill
A regular, very average bookstore owner encounters a huge movie star, who even willingly meets his family, and ‘accidentally’ sleep with each other. This movie was a super hit, but let’s admit it, if it didn’t star Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant as the leads, it probably wouldn’t have been such a success!
LOL
The lead character Lola (Miley Cyrus) discovers that her boyfriend cheated on her during summer, her mom, Anne (Demi Moore), is a divorcee who regularly sleeps with her ex-husband, until Anne discovers he is also with another woman. Anne and Lola are also drifting apart. Oh well, you might just want to watch LOL for the LOLs!
After the Ball
Loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale, the film features a young woman forced to dress up as a man due to a series of misadventures. Horrible stepsisters, a super helpful and readily available young handsome man, and a company loss, there is quite a lot happening in this movie!
No Strings Attached
Starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, the film is about two friends who decide to make a pact to have "no strings attached" casual relationship without falling in love with each other. The spontaneity and rawness of the movie made it quite popular and the sizzling on-screen chemistry between Portman and Kutcher was certainly a treat to watch!
Friends With Benefits
This movie’s plot revolves around Dylan Harper (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie Rellis (Mila Kunis), who meet in New York City, and believe adding sex to their friendship will not lead to complications. Well, complications happen, the friendship bears a brunt, and romance gets too messy. A typical chick flick which makes for a hot date night movie as well!
It's Complicated
A successful bakery owner (played by Meryl Streep) and single mother of three starts a secret affair with her former husband (Alec Baldwin). This movie isn’t everyone’s cup of tea because of its very complicated and intricate storyline and loads of characters to follow. Streep, though, is brilliant as always.
As Good As It Gets
Jack Nicholson stars as a misanthropic and obsessive-compulsive novelist, while Helen Hunt is a single mother with a chronically ill son. As Good As It Gets is a smart, emotional drama film, however if you are looking for a super mushy, sappy romance then this movie certainly isn’t for you!
The Age of Adaline
This 2015 romantic fantasy film stars Blake Lively in the title role who plays Adaline Bowman, a young woman who stops aging after an accident at the age of 29. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with many praising the performances of Lively, while also receiving flake for the loopholes in the storyline.
Our Souls At Night
The film stars Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Judy Greer. It narrates the story of a widow (Fonda) and widower (Redford), who are neighbours, and to combat their loneliness began a platonic relationship. The movie is a mature ‘romance’ about how older age brings with it its own complications and intricacies.
One Day
This is a forlorn story about friendship and love, and the powerful moments when the two intersect. You’ll spend the whole movie rooting for Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess to end up together, but the storytellers have something different in mind – certainly not a happy ending!
The Danish Girl
The Danish Girl teaches us that love transcends gender and social norms, and Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander will make you laugh one second and cry the next. You want this couple to make it to the end, but life can be cruel sometimes. A super brilliant but super sad movie.
PS I Love You
Gerard Butler dies of a brain tumor but leaves a series of love letters to his wife, Hillary Swank, encouraging her to live life to the fullest and urging her to remember how much he loves her. This movie may be one of the greatest love stories, but it is also thoroughly depressing!
Clueless
This teen classic stars Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd and Britney Murphy. Few people know that this movie is loosely based on Jane Austin’s novel Emma, updating the setting to modern-day Beverly Hills! What most people certainly remember are Cher’s (Alicia’s) walk-in closet, her attitude and her famous ‘As if!!!’
