Is there anything more exciting than going to the cinema? Most of us tend to make an evening out of it. We meet up with our friends (or our partner) beforehand, we grab a bite to eat, we stock up on popcorn and Coke before finding the best seats and sometimes we even grab a drink or two afterward (to discuss the movie that we just saw!)
Of course, one doesn’t necessarily have to go to the cinema to enjoy a good movie. Sometimes staying in is just as fun. We can invite our friends over, order pizza and wrap ourselves in warm, fuzzy blankets.
The only problem with staying in is that it means that we must do our own research when it comes to finding the perfect movie. In the cinema, we have a limited choice. At home, the options are limitless. As such, we could very well spend hours trying to pick out that perfect film. Being ruthless is vital in this situation. We only want to watch films that get the best ratings and reviews and star the most handsome Hollywood actors. And what’s better than watching a film with our favorite Hollywood hunk? Daydreaming about our life with them, of course!
Eighth Grade?
Believe it or not but Eight Grade was Bo Burnham’s feature film directorial debut. It starred Elsie Fisher as Kayla Day, an eighth-grader who is one week away from graduating to high school. Kayla has social anxiety but nonetheless produces vlogs in which she gives life advice to others. Apart from Fisher this movie also starred Josh Hamilton and Emily Robinson. As was to be expected, this film was incredibly well received. It won numerous awards and award nominations. For example, according to IMDb, Fisher was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in this superb comedy drama film.
Blade Runner 2049?
Who’d pick and who’d pass Blade Runner 2049? Blade Runner 2049 came out only two years ago, in 2017. It starred Ryan Gosling as the lead character, Officer K, a blade runner who works for Los Angeles Police Department. One day Officer K discovers a long-buried secret that could very well plunge the whole world into complete chaos. This film is actually a sequel to the 1982 movie Blade Runner which starred Harrison Ford. Ford also made an appearance in this movie, as did Robin Wright, Jared Leto, and Dave Bautista (IMDb) among others.
Bride Wars?
Kate Hudson played the role of Liv in this movie whereas Anne Hathaway portrayed Emma. Liv and Emma are best friends who have spent most of their childhood planning their ideal wedding. However, when both of them get engaged they are in for an unpleasant surprise – due to a clerical error they are both due to get married on the same day. Will their friendship survive? As is probably quite obvious, this movie, which came out exactly 10 years ago, all the way back in 2009, falls under the genre of romantic comedy film (IMDb).
Ocean's 8?
Ocean’s 8 is both a spin-off and a continuation of the famous Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean trilogy. This heist comedy film featured an ensemble cast that consisted of such talented Hollywood ladies as Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina and Rihanna. The film focuses on a woman named Debbie Ocean (Danny Ocean’s sister), who has spent years planning the perfect heist. She recruits a number of specialists that are to help her steal a necklace that is worth millions of dollars from the annual Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (IMDb).
Pride and Prejudice?
Every romantic at heart will want to choose Pride and Prejudice. Price and Prejudice is a 2005 romantic period drama film that was directed by Joe Wright. As most people are probably well aware, the plot of this film was based on Jane Austen’s famous novel of the same name. Keira Knightley was cast as Elizabeth Bennett in this movie, an independent woman with a modern outlook on life who is pressured by her family to marry her cousin Mr. Collins. However, Elizabeth can’t help but fall in love with Mr. Darcy, an incredibly wealthy and an incredibly arrogant man, instead (portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen according to IMDb).
Twilight?
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were cast as the lead characters in Twilight, a 2008 romantic fantasy film that was based on a Stephenie Meyer novel of the same name. Stewart played the role of Bella Swan, a normal teenage girl whereas Pattinson played the role of Edward Cullen, a mysterious young man who turns out to be a vampire. It was this movie that brought Stewart and Pattinson international fame. Other actors such as Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli and Taylor Lautner (IMDb) were also cast, albeit in supporting roles.
Wonder Woman?
Fans of superhero movies will probably want to pick Wonder Woman, a superhero film that was released two years ago, in 2017. According to IMDb, Wonder Woman is actually the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe. As the name probably makes it quite clear the film focuses on Diana, the princess of the Amazonians, who decides to leave her sheltered island in the hopes of helping stop World War I. As was to be expected, this film was a huge box office hit.
Thelma & Louise?
Thelma & Louise is the oldest movie on this quiz. It was released more than 20 years ago, all the way back in 1991. Nonetheless, it is a classic road film and one that most people have seen at least once in their lives. As the name probably makes it quite clear, this film focuses on two best friends, Thelma (played by Geena Davis) and Louise (portrayed by Susan Sarandon), who decide to go on a road trip. Their trip doesn’t go quite as planned however and soon they are on the run from Detective Slocumb (played by Harvey Keitel according to IMDb).
Hairspray?
If you’re into musicals then you will without a doubt want to pick Hairspray. Hairspray falls under the genre of musical romantic comedy film. It was released more than 10 years ago, in 2007, and it starred a great number of talented actors including Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, James Marsden, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah and Brittany Snow. Set in the 60’s in Baltimore this film centers on a teenage girl named Tracy who becomes an overnight celebrity after she auditions and wins "The Corny Collins Show" (IMDb).
The Help?
Emma Stone played the role of Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan in The Help, an aspiring writer who decides to take advantage of the tumultuous time that she lives in (the civil rights movement) and pen a book detailing the lives of the maids that work for white families. This film hit the cinemas exactly eight years ago, back in 2011. Apart from Stone, this period drama film also featured Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Bryce Dallas Howard and Octavia Spencer (IMDb).

Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, Kristen Wiig, Jovan Adepo, Amanda Chiu, Stephanie Ng Wan and Patricia Summersett are some of the actors that made an appearance in Mother! Mother! is a psychological thriller film that was directed by Darren Aronofsky and that was released only two years ago, in 2017. The storyline of this film centers on a young couple whose peaceful life is disrupted after the arrival of mysterious guests (IMDb).
The Notebook?
The Notebook is probably one of the best romantic dramas ever made. This 2004 film was directed by Nick Cassavetes and it starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as the lead actors. Indeed, it was this movie that turned Gosling and McAdams into international stars pretty much overnight. The storyline of this film centers on a poor quarry worker named Noah and a woman from a wealthy family named Allie. Pitch Perfect is a hilarious comedy film that was released in 2012. It was directed by Jason Moore and it featured an ensemble cast that included such talented actors as Anna Kendrick, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Skylar Astin, Adam DeVine, Ben Platt, Alexis Knapp, Elizabeth Banks, Hana Mae Lee, Ester Dean and John Michael Higgins. The film centers on The Barden Bellas, Barden University's all-girl a cappella group that competes with another a-capella group from their college in the hopes of winning the Nationals (IMDb).
The Great Gatsby?
Based on a famous novella by the skilled writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a romantic drama film that came out in 2013. Like the novella, this film is also set in the 1920’s New York. The movie starred Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, an aspiring actor who moves in across a millionaire named Jay Gatsby (portrayed by the Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio). Originally Gatsby comes from a poor family but makes millions of dollars in the hopes of winning the heart of a woman named Daisy (played by Carey Mulligan according to IMDb).
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire?
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth film in the famous Harry Potter film franchise. This film, which was released in 2005, falls under the genre of fantasy film. The plot of this film focuses on Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts as Harry is chosen to compete in the ill-fated Triwizard Tournament. Daniel Radcliffe reprized his role of Harry Potter in this film whereas Emma Watson portrayed Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint played the role of Ron Weasley. Indeed, it was this film that turned DiCaprio and Winslet into Hollywood A-listers. Of course, DiCaprio and Winslet were not the only two actors to appear in this movie. Billy Zane, Bill Paxton, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, and Jonathan Hyde also got plenty of screen time. This film focuses on the ill-fated journey of the “unsinkable” Titanic as well as on the love story between a third-class passenger and a first-class passenger (IMDb).
The Hunger Games?
The 2012 science fiction adventure film The Hunger Games is the film that turned Jennifer Lawrence into the star that she is today. As most people are probably well aware, Lawrence portrayed the role of Katniss Everdeen in this film, a teenage girl who decides to take her sister’s place in The Hunger Games, a televised tournament in which 24 teenagers – two from each of the twelve Districts of Panem – are forced to compete against one another until only one remains (IMDb).
Inside Out?
Inside Out is a 2015 computer-animated movie. It falls under the genre of comedy drama film. The plot of this movie centers on the mind of a girl named Riley Andersen who has just moved from Minnesota to San Francisco. Her mind is inhabited by five different personified emotions that all attempt to lead her through life. This film featured the voices of such talented actors as Amy Poehler, Richard Kind, Lewis Black, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, and Diane Lane (IMDb) among others.
Mamma Mia!
Meryl Streep played the role of Donna in Mamma Mia!, a hotelier who lives in the Greek islands whereas Amanda Seyfried portrayed her daughter, Sophie. Paddington?
Paddington is a live-action animated comedy film that was released five years ago, in 2014. It is obviously based on the stories of Paddington Bear that were penned down by the talented writer Michael Bond. The plot of this film follows Paddington, a bear with human traits, who journeys from the jungles of Peru to the streets of London. Paddington is quickly adopted by the kind-hearted members of the Brown family but Paddington is nonetheless in danger – a taxidermist named Millicent Clyde is determined to add the lovable bear to her impressive collection (IMDb).

It was on set of The Last Song that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth first met and fell in love. Cyrus played the role of Ronnie in this film, an angry teenage girl who is sent to a small beach town in Georgia for the summer holidays. It is there that she reconnects with her estranged father and it is there that she meets Will Blakelee (played by Hemsworth), a skilled beach volleyball player who is quick to fall for her (IMDb).
Gone Girl?
Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are just some of the actors that were cast in Gone Girl, a psychological thriller film that hit the cinemas five years ago, in 2014. According to IMDb, this enthralling film was directed by David Fincher and it was based on a popular novel of the same name that was written by Gillian Flynn. Interestingly enough, it was none other than Flynn who wrote the screen play for this film. As most are probably well aware, the story line of this movie focuses on a woman who frames her husband for a crime that he did not commit.
