Pick Or Pass On These Games And We'll Reveal What Type Of Gamer You Are

There was once a time when video games were seen as niche, as the sorts of things that only nerds played in dark buildings, spending their parents hard earned money on something more childish than a film or a book. While video gaming does sadly still carry this baggage around with it, it has got to a point in society where loss of people play them, making it one of the biggest entertainment industries out there. The amount of money that video games pull in per year is astonishing!

This change has lead to new words and phrases being added to the lexicon of gaming, two of those phrases being "hardcore gamer" and "casual gamer." We thought it would be fun to make a quiz that put you to the test, getting you to pick which games you'd play and which games you'd pass on. We think that, depending on your answers, we'll be able to tell if you're a hardcore fan of games or somebody who just plays them casually.

So, are you ready to find out if you're a hardcore or casual gamer? Do you doubt our ability to figure you out based on these fifty games? Well, we think it's about time we found out so let's get started!

Question 1

Super Mario 64

We're starting you off with an absolute classic. While every other 2D property was attempting go 3D and floundering, Mario was showing them how easy it really was, producing the first 3D game in the franchise that exceeded expectations.

The Last Of Us

A more modern classic, a game that captured the minds of everyone out there that wanted a gripping experience. What happens when you take control of a man who has been living in a zombie apocalypse for 15 years? You'll have to play to find out!

Watch Dogs 2

While the first game was a bit of a flop, the Watch Dogs sequel figured out to have fun. The hacking was better and the move to San Francisco added some color to a franchise that was otherwise dark and dreary.

Tetris

Quite possibly the most famous game of all time, this is something that everyone immediately recognises. Just seeing this image fills our head with the music and gets our hands twitching to play it! But what do you think of this retro game? Would you play or pass on it?

Sonic Mania

Allowing a new Sonic game to be made by the fans was a stroke of genius on the part of Sega. Sonic Team have been continuously failing at it for decades at this point, so it's only fair that the fans get a go. Spoilers: they nailed it! Super Mario World

For many, this is the greatest 2D Mario out there. You can still go back to this game and enjoy every minute of it, which we have done on several occasions. In fact, it might be time to get out the old SNES and play through it again...

Super Smash Bros.

We know that there's loads of them and they're all pretty similar, but we're going to go with the most recent just for the sake of argument. This series has let people see what it would look like if if Donkey Kong beat up Peach, which is enough of a reason for it to exist if you ask us.

Titanfall 2

For us, this was the best modern multiplayer game that nobody played. For some reason, nobody wanted to shell out for a truly interesting multiplayer experience. Who doesn't want to run about killing people in a giant mech?! But what do you think about this multiplayer game? If you had the chance would you play or pass on it?

Yakuza 0

Yeah, that's right, we're throwing you an obscure one already! This game shows you what it would be like if you were a Yakuza in Japan, except everything is absolutely ridiculous. The combat and odd atmosphere make this franchise a must play.

Splatoon 2

Nintendo have made many bad business decisions in the past, but they're always able to claw it back, and we're happy to. Taking their chance in the online multiplayer market, their paint based shooter is worth playing if you like brightly colored fun!

Resident Evil 7

The most recent entry in the Resident Evil franchise showed that when the series is handled right, it can be scary and a hell of a lot of fun. Here's hoping that they keep the new writing team on board for the next game!

Super Mario Odyssey

Just when you think Nintendo won't be able to pull it out of the bad, they prove us all wrong. Where do you go from space? Well, apparently the answer is to go even further into space while giving you a talking hat. Who knew?!

Skyrim

While its porting to every single console known to man has become somewhat of a joke, this game has taken a lot of hours away from a lot of gamers out there. Play it your way in a fantasy sandbox.

Skate 3

Tony Hawk has a handle on every successful skating game for a very long time, so it was nice to see somebody else get a chance. If you haven't played the Skate series, then we suggest you do, because they're a lot of fun once you get the hang of them.

Shadow Of The Colossus

There are a handful of games out there that you can point to when somebody laughs at you for saying games are art. This is one of them. Take down huge and beautiful monsters as you try to save the life of your girlfriend.

For Honor

We all know that there are a lot of online games dedicated to shooting, so this game was a refreshing change. They didn't make the change either, expecting you to get to grips with a seriously complicated but satisfying combat system. You choose from three different types of warriors. Vikings, Ninjas, and knights. What would you do? Play, or definitely pass on this one?

Assassin's Creed Origins

It's amazing to think that this series is still going. They seem to pump them out at an alarming rate, never changing much. If you enjoyed the last ones, you'll enjoy the new ones, and there is definitely some fun to be had.

Bioshock

Video games are different to any other form of entertainment as they are an interactive medium. This allows them to create narratives like the one in Bioshock which plays with the nature of video games. What do you think of this game? It's insane to look back at the first game in the Legend Of Zelda series and then look at the most recent instalment. Breath Of The Wild takes the series back to its roots, offering you freedom rather than linearity.

It's hard to forget in the face of the constant additions to the Call Of Duty franchise that the first game to bring it into the modern warfare franchise was actually pretty good. One unpleasant scene immediately springs to mind...

If you're a true fan of video games, there are some games out there that you may have missed in your youth that you just have to go back and play. Chrono Trigger is a time travelling epic that nobody should miss out on.

Contra

The original Contra was a test in patience that not many modern games are able to match up to. Blast your way through levels attempting to hold onto your precious lives, dying when hit by a single bullet or enemy.

Dark Souls III

If you're looking for a challenge in modern gaming, then you can do much worse than the Dark Souls franchise. The most recent game brought it back to its roots, the new graphics making the dark and dreary aesthetics even more astonishing.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Different types of video games go in and out of fashion all the time, but it's only the truly brilliant platformer games that get noticed in the modern world. To continue making this played out genre fun, you've got to be a real genius.

DOOM 2016

DOOM reminded us all why we found the original game so fun. Adding beautiful graphics and the ability to pull off brutal close combat moves to grain health and ammo turned this old franchise into one of the freshest modern shooters.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Yes, we have spelt that name right. However, that is our only niggle with this game. Not only does it play incredibly well, but it's a completely mesmerising thing to watch. The visuals on display are beautiful and we love every second of it.

New Vegas

For many, this is the peak of the 3D Fallout games, and we think we agree. It was zanier than 3 and a lot more fun to play than 4. If you've never given it a go, jump into the post-apocalyptic wasteland of America to see what you think.

Five Nights At Freddy's

Look, we're not saying that there isn't any fun in being scared, but a jump scare is not hard to achieve. If you want a very short and very cheap thrill, then you can definitely turn to this for your horror. Otherwise, go play Silent Hill 2.

The cartoonish visuals and ability to create objects/set traps is what makes this Battle Royale game stand out from all the rest out there. They're mostly the same anyway if you ask us, but there's enough to keep you coming back to this one!

God Of War 2018

Stripping away the tired combat and stale need for masculinity has breathed new life into God Of War. We will be interested whether they decide to go any further with it. We don't think they should. Leave it in a great place.

Red Dead Redemption

With the sequel soon approaching, many are looking back at the sandbox Western nostalgically, thinking about what they hope to see in the new game. We hope they really mix it up and don't rest on the fact that the first game was so well received by video gamers everywhere.

Rainbow Six Siege

The thinking man's online experience, this FPS actually tasks you with working as a team to succeed. It's slower paced and a lot more methodical than other games similar to it, and we love every second of it. Everybody should be playing it if you ask us.

The other big hitter in the Battle Royale scene, this was the game that really started it all. Thanks to this game, it will be a long time before we see a decline in the amount of Battle Royale games. Whether this is a blessing or not depends on whether you like playing them!

Another game that can be pointed to as a work of art, this game not only offers you some fantastic puzzles to get stuck into, it also has a brilliant narrative. With some genuine twists and a lot of laughs, the writing in this short game is absolutely airtight.

Pokemon Red

While most people will never get into the competitive side of these games, almost everyone has played one of the handheld games in the series. Pokemon was a worldwide phenomenon and still continues to sell an insane amount of copies every time a new one is released.

Persona 5

Offering a unique visual style, this game has brought a lot of people to the Persona series late in the game. s the franchise doesn't have an overarching narrative as such, you can pick up and play this game about high school kids without missing much from the last games.

Payday 2

Another online experience that offers you the chance to do something a little more cerebral than the likes of Call Of Duty. Yet again, you're tasked with working as team to bring in the biggest haul possible from a variety of different robberies. It's fun and frantic.

Overwatch

While we haven't plunged many hours into this game, we have to say that one of the ways it excels is character design. You know who or what you're looking at as soon as you glance at one of the other players, thereby knowing what danger could be heading your way!

Need For Speed Most Wanted

It sort of feels like Need For Speed have been pumping out the same game for a very long time at this point, but if you're looking for some blood pumping arcade racing then you could do a lot worse than this series. Always worth a look if you're a racing game fan.

Mortal Kombat X

There was once a time when games like Mortal Kombat seemed slightly impressive for being able to make gore work when pixels were all developers had. Now, the gratuitous violence is only interesting to people like us who have a seriously problem that we need to get checked out for...

GTA V

Rockstar will never stop making games in this franchise as it's essentially a license to print money, but we like the fact that they tried something new with GTA V. We hope that they go even further and really experiment with the formula so that it doesn't get stale.

Undertale

If you get tired of seeing the same games being made in the modern world, you can always turn to Undertale. A truly unique experience that we don't want to tell you anything about because you have to experience it for yourself with no spoilers whatsoever. Trust us. Go buy it!

Minecraft

If you were the sort of kid that couldn't put down your Lego as a kid then Minecraft is the game for you. Head into a randomly generated world and try to survive, crafting as you go and learning about the world around you. Surprisingly absorbing once you get into it.

Metal Gear Solid V

This game took a turn in a different direction for the Metal Gear series, and while some didn't like the open feel of the sandbox and narrative, we loved it. Shame that Konami sacked Kojima before he could properly finish it, but we have really high hopes for Death Stranding at the moment!

Metroid: Samus Returns

We would be the first to admit that we don't like the way the entertainment industry tries to get us to pay for something they're just rehashing, but if a remake of a game genuinely improves on the original in some way, then we stand by it. Metroid: Samus Returns does just that.

Just Cause 3

The entire point of Just Cause 3 is to give you a place to play and hand you controls that let you look cool while never feeling like you're not in complete control. Sure, there's a story, but who cares when you can ride around on top of a car before using a grappling hook to hijack a jet?!

Injustice 2

Nobody plays fighting games for the story, which is why so many people were surprised to find out that the second game in the Injustice series actually had a pretty good single player campaign. Pick your favorite superhero and the beat the hell out of your least favorite ones.

Half-Life 2

Considered by some to be the greatest example of narrative in an FPS game, Half-Life 2 is still thought of as a modern great. Gordon Freeman is back and he's got quite the adventure ahead of him. Time to get going if he wants to stop aliens from taking over that planet.

Horizon Zero Dawn

It's a shame that this game was never really able to get past the brilliant gameplay and create a narrative worth coming back for. Sure, it's amazing to scale a robot dinosaur and then grapple your way back off it before killing another robotic dinosaur with your bow and arrow, but this can get boring without some substance!

Infamous

The series definitely lost its way towards the end, but we loved the first two games. Stepping into the shoes of Cole McGrath and shooting lightning around a destroyed city never felt stale. We think we could go back and enjoy it now if we're being honest.
