Disney movies speak to the child in everyone. Whether people are fans of the really early stuff or the new films that Disney has released, there is just a quality to them that makes them stand the test of time. disney films have always been family-friendly, even as they expanded the types of stories told in them. They have gone from the classic fairy tales to films about video game characters. They have featured both female and male protagonists, and sometimes they are people, sometimes they are animals. Disney films can be sweet, funny, touching, and adventurous, sometimes all at once!

What kind of Disney movies a person likes says a lot about them, and it reflects on their personality more than they might think. Do they go with the classic films that helped Disney become a household name? Do they prefer some of the lesser-known films that were released during Disney's "dark ages?" Or do they prefer the newer films, ones that stretch the limits of imagination and attempt to comment on the stories of the past? Pocahontas

Pocahontas is the classic tale of an indigenous woman who falls in love with an explorer named John Smith. As the couple grow closer and fall more in love, the woman’s tribe begins to turn against the explorers, who may have ulterior motives to befriending the natives. The film is filled with beautiful animation, and features the classic Disney song, “Colors of the Wind.” In the end, Pocahontas saves John Smith’s life, and the two groups learn to cooperate with each other.

The Lion King

In The Lion King, a new heir to the throne of pride rock is born. The new prince, Simba, is told by his father, Mufasa, that whatever the sun touches is their domain. However, Simba’s uncle Scar wants the throne for himself, so he betrays Mufasa and sends Simba away. Simba meets two new friends, a warthog named Pumbaa and a meerkat named Timon. Years later, Simba reunites with Nala. He returns to pride rock and battles Scar for the throne.

Moana

In Moana, the daughter of an island chief is tired of her life on the island. She wishes to go out to sea and find new places, but her father forbids it, as the sea is far too dangerous. Moana’s grandmother tells her that she must have the demigod Maui return the heart of Te Fiti in order to save the island, which has experienced food shortages. Moana and Maui set off a voyage rife with danger, including run-ins with Kakamora and a giant crab named Tamatoa.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid tells the tale of Ariel, daughter of King Triton, who wishes to experience life on land. When the sea witch Ursula promises Ariel a way to live like humans, Ariel signs away her voice and eventually meets Prince Eric. The pair eventually begin to fall in love. However, Ariel must receive a “kiss of true love” within three days if she wants to stay human. The Little Mermaid is one of Disney’s most famous and endearing films, and kicked off their second golden age of animated films.

Pinocchio

Pinocchio is the classic tale of a puppet who is brought to life after his maker, Geppetto, makes a wish that he was a real boy. Joined by his “conscience,” Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio embarks on an adventure that takes him everywhere from a puppet show to pleasure island to the belly of a whale. Along the way, Pinocchio has to learn some hard lessons, including being honest (after all, if he lies, his nose starts to grow). In the end, Pinocchio is changed into a real boy.

Dumbo

No one would have ever thought they would see an elephant fly until they saw Dumbo. This classic Disney film tells the tale of a young elephant who is able to fly because of his giant ears. Sadly, Dumbo is separated from his mother, and forced to perform in the circus. There are many classic sequences in Dumbo, including a nightmarish vision of pink elephants and when Dumbo’s mother sings the famous Disney song, “Baby of mine,” while cradling Dumbo in her trunk.

Cinderella

Cinderella is the classic fairy tale of a woman who is mistreated by her mean stepmother and stepsisters. She is forced to clean the house and do all of the chores. However, one night she is visited by her fairy godmother, who grants her wish of attending the Prince’s Ball. However, she must return to her home before the stroke of midnight, when the spell ends. Later, she is found by the prince when he returns her glass slipper, which fits her perfectly.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Based on the classic story, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of Quasimodo, a man born with deformations that hides away in the bell tower of the famous cathedral in France. He is accompanied by three gargoyle friends. His caretaker, a strictly religious man named Frollo, is not a good person. He sings about the temptation of Esmerelda, a traveling dancing girl who befriends Quasimodo after he ventures out into the streets for a day. The film stars Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, and Jason Alexander in voiceover roles.

Mulan

Mulan is the story of a young woman living in feudal Japan, who does not quite fit in with the other women. When the country goes to war, all of the men from each household are called to serve in the army. Not wanting to let her father go and fight, Mulan poses as a man and goes in his place. She is joined by her dragon guardian, Mushu, and proves that she is as brave and strong as any man in the army.

Meet the Robinsons

Meet The Robinsons might be one of the most forgotten Disney films ever. The movie, which came out in 2007, was one of Disney’s first forays into computer animated features without Pixar. The film tells the story of an orphan named Lewis who meets a boy from the future named Wilbur Robinson. As Lewis joins Wilbur on a quest to find a stolen time machine, he meets the rest of Wilbur’s family in the future. The film then spins an ambitious twist involving time travel.

The Black Cauldron

As far as black sheep films go, The Black Cauldron may be one of Disney’s biggest. The film, which was released in 1985, was Disney’s first foray into PG rated animation. The film is based on a series of books by author Lloyd Alexander. In the film, Taran, an assistant pig-keeper, goes on a journey to stop the Horned King from finding the Black Cauldron, which would allow him to create a massive army of zombie soldiers and take over the world.

Lilo & Stitch

Released in 2002, Lilo & Stitch tells the story about an alien creation named Stitch, who is powerful and smart enough to be used for unsavory purposes. However, Stitch is also fairly difficult to keep under control. After he escapes to planet Earth, he meets a girl named Lilo who lives in Hawaii with her older sister. Intergalactic forces attempt to hunt down Stitch, but Lilo forms a bond with him and tries to keep him from being taken away again.

Aladdin

Aladdin is the classic tale of a street urchin who is chosen by a sorcerer to enter the cave of wonders in order to find a magic lamp. Once Aladdin finds the lamp, he befriends the genie who lives inside. After he is granted three wishes, he uses his first to make himself a prince in order to iwn the heart of Princess Jasmine. Aladdin is rightfully considered one of Disney’s best films, and stars Robin Williams as the voice of the genie.

Wreck-It Ralph

Wreck-It Ralph is an imaginative and immensely fun Disney film that examines the life of various video game characters. The main character of the film, Ralph, is a villain, but is tired of always being the bad guy. He leaves his game and hops into another one in an attempt to be a hero. Along the way, he meats Vanellope, a glitching character from the racing game “Sugar Rush.” The film stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty is the classic fairy tale about a princess who is cursed to fall into a deep sleep after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel. She will only be awakened by a kiss from her true love. Due to the film’s unpopularity, the studio stopped making films based on fairy tales. However, it did introduce one of the most famous Disney villains of all time, the witch Maleficent, who received her own starring role in a live action film where she was played by Angelina Jolie.

Chicken Little is another forgotten Disney movie from their earliest days of computer animated features without the help of Pixar. While the movie features the same warning made famous in the original story that the sky is falling, it takes some wild twists and turns. It got particularly strange when the plot veered into science fiction. Zach Braff provided the voice of the main character, the paranoid Chicken Little who eventually saves the entire town. The film was not beloved by audiences or critics.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is an adventurous Disney film that is nonetheless not fondly remembered by critics or audiences. The film tells the story of an avid scholar who thinks he has proven the existence of the lost city. He assembles a crew and they go on an underwater voyage to Atlantis, where they find an entire civilization of people who have mastered underwater magic. However, a member of the crew betrays the main character and tries to take the power of Atlantis for himself.

The Jungle Book is the classic tale of a boy named Mowgli who grows up being raised by wolves. However, as he grows older, it is revealed to him that he is human, and is therefore a danger to every animal in the jungle. Mowgli leaves his home and meets a carefree bear named Baloo, who tries to convince Mowgli to just relax and live an easy life. However, Mowgli returns home to save his family after a tiger named Shere Khan.

Tangled

Tangled re-tells the classic fairy tale of Rapunzel and her famous long hair. In this Disney film, which kick-started a wave of acclaimed new “Disney Princess” movies, Rapunzel’s hair has a mind of its own. She has been kept in a tower by her aunt gothel, but is eventually set free when a man named Flynn Rider discovers her tower. Together, Rapunzel and Flynn set out to return to the kingdom. Tangled was met with wide critical acclaim, and was a return to form for Disney.

It also has not aged well, considering that it stars the incredibly divisive Roseanne Barr in a lead role.

Alice in Wonderland is a Disney animated film based on the classic book by Lewis Carroll. Alice is a girl who follows a white rabbit into a tree and lands in the strange world of wonderland. There, she meets a cast of strange characters, including the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Queen of Hearts. Alice shrinks, grows, gets lost, and finally makes her way home. However, she is unsure as to whether the entire adventures was just a dream or if it actually happened.

Peter Pan is the classic tale of three children who fly to the magical world of Neverland with the mischievous Peter Pan and his sidekick, Tinkerbell. There, they are told that they never have to grow up. They meet the lost boys and have run-ins with the infamous pirate, Captain Hook, whose hand was taken by an alligator with a ticking clock in its stomach. Peter Pan is constantly antagonizing him. The film was based on the children’s novel written by J.M. Barrie.
