Only True Fans Can Name All These Vampire Diaries Characters

The Vampire Diaries has to be one of the most popular TV series out there. It is a supernatural TV series that was developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. It starred such talented actors as Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, Candice King, Matt Davis and Joseph Morgan. Season one of this engaging show was released in 2009. The series ended eight years and eight seasons later, in 2017 (IMDb).

The plot of The Vampire Diaries focuses on a human girl who can't help but fall in love with a centuries old vampire. However, their relationship is made complicated by a number of different factors, such as the arrival of the vampire's older brother who enjoys nothing more than causing mischief and chaos wherever he goes (but who ends up falling for the human girl too).

While The Vampire Diaries focuses on vampires, other supernatural beings also make an appearance. For example, werewolves, witches, psychics, vampire hunters and sirens also get plenty of screen time. All in all, the plot of The Vampire Diaries is quite complex. As such, one would want to watch it from the very beginning to understand the complicated story lines of its numerous characters.

Question 1

Name this female protagonist of the show.

Let’s start off easy – this character was the female protagonist of the show. When we first met her she appeared to be an average teenage girl. We quickly learned that this character had recently lost her parents (or, as it was eventually revealed, her adoptive parents) in a car accident. She too was in the car when the accident took place but managed to survive. This character had a younger adoptive brother and as it turned out, was not so average after all – she was actually a Petrova doppelganger, a fact that put her life in danger on numerous occasions. This character fell for a centuries old vampire and then later for his brother.

Question 2

Name this vampire.

This character was the female protagonist’s best friend. She was a major character and appeared in all eight seasons of the show. As such, fans of the series should have no difficulty in recalling her name. When we first met this character she appeared to be high-strung and quite annoying. However, as the series progressed we saw her grow as a person. She was one of the first few major characters to be turned into a vampire. Unlike most humans-turned-vampires, this character actually enjoyed her immortality. One of the original vampires was madly in love with this character. However, even though this character was attracted to the original vampire too, she ended up marrying someone else.

Question 3

Who is this vampire hunter?

Recognize this character? He was the female protagonist’s younger brother (or rather, adoptive brother). Like most teenagers, he was initially very moody and at times even appeared to have a depression. However, he had a good reason for being so gloomy – his parents had recently passed away in a car accident, an event that naturally turned this character’s whole world upside down. This character was quick to learn that Mystic Falls was inhabited by supernatural beings, such as vampires, werewolves and witches. As the series progressed he became a vampire hunter and a member of the Brotherhood of the Five.

Question 4

Name this male protagonist of the show.

One of the two male protagonists of the show, this character was a centuries old vampire who saved the female protagonist from drowning after a car crash (unfortunately, he did not have enough time to save her adoptive parents). This character had an older brother who was also a vampire. However, their relationship was complicated at best. As most fans will probably remember, they were both once in love with the same woman (who turned them both into vampires) and eventually they both also fell for the female protagonist of the show, which further intensified and complicated their relationship. Unlike his brother, this character had a strong moral compass and adhered to a “bunny diet”.

Question 5

Who is this?

This character was the other male protagonist of the show. He had a younger brother, but as we have already mentioned, their relationship was kind of strained. Initially this character came to Mystic Falls so as to make his brother’s life more difficult. However, with time they grew closer together although the fact that they were both in love with the same human girl did not help them bond. Nonetheless, they worked together if only to save the female protagonist from the clutches of ill-meaning vampires. Unlike his brother this character could be quite manipulative. He saw nothing wrong with feeding on humans and he often used compulsion to get what he wanted. In the end, the female protagonist chose him as her life partner and the two took the cure to vampirism (and lived happily ever after).

Question 6

The name of this vampire is...?

This character might resemble the female protagonist of the show, but don’t be fooled for it isn’t her. This character was a centuries old vampire. She led a normal life as a human back in the 15th century but was disowned by her parents after she fell pregnant out of wedlock. She was then exiled to England where she met two original vampires. Initially she was attracted to both of them but then learned that the original vampire and hybrid intended to sacrifice her in a ritual for she was a Petrova doppelganger. This character then fled and tricked one of the vampires she met on the way to turn her into an immortal. As most fans are without doubt well aware, this character was the one who turned the two male protagonists of the show into vampires.

One of the original vampires, this character first made an appearance in season two of the show with the intention of capturing the female protagonist. For example, he was quick to accidentally activate his family’s werewolf gene which turned him into a werewolf. Later the original vampire and hybrid turned this character into a hybrid and while initially this character was pleased with the changes (for example, being a hybrid meant that he didn’t have to turn into a werewolf when he didn’t want to do so) he eventually set off to break the link between him and the original vampire and hybrid.
